Instead of a short term goal journal I'm starting a more general journal. I just turned 49 on April 24th. I am 5' 11.5". In the past 4 years I've been as low as 175 pounds and now I'm at 204. The lowest I've had my bodyfat in this timeframe is around 13%. It's up and down quickly. I am now over 20%. I had recent surgery. I probably can't expect full recovery until sometimes in June.

In three weeks I have gained 15 pounds from sitting around and not working out. All fat! My training will be limited to very light weightlifting and walking for quite a few weeks. Nothing that strains the core area for a while. My continuous long term goal is shedding bodyfat and keeping it off. Also trying to maintain as much strength and muscle doing it.

My biggest motivator on forums is just having everyone stop by my journal.

Thanks Kevin. I'm back to work today. I have a carpet and upholstery cleaning business. It's a lot of physical work. The first job wiped me out. 15 extra pounds on me sure didn't help matters. I probably should have waited one more week. I'm going out to buy some light db's today. I'll be working on high reps for a while.

Cool. You are a very big motivation! Just bought some 15 and 20 pound db's. My past few trips have been heavier and heavier one's. It felt a little strange. I did have good luck building muscle and endurance in the past with very high reps. It should be better for fat loss too.

Hi Marcos. Thanks for stopping in. High reps are killer but do work for me. I wish high calories worked for me too.

Hi Ray. I walked another mile through the woods today. Did some hills. Got really out of breath quick. I tried a short workout. Did some curls, tri extensions, and flyes. Pretty shaky just from that. I guess it's what I should expect. I was peeing blood for a few days just less than 2 weeks ago. I'm going to take this super light and slow.

Sure wish I knew what Elise looks like. Anyone else wondering? We need a face pic!

Hey Intenceman. We haven't talked in a while. I have been following your awesome progress though. You've been pushing heavy for years now and deserve it. I haven't heard from Val in a couple years.

I got BPH at a young age. It was hard to pee, I went every half hour, the stream was very weak, I didn't empty, I had pressure all the time, I woke up at least 4 times a night for a long time. I lived like this and stayed very active for years. It was always hard doing anything. There always had to be a way to get to the bathroom. I've been waiting for years for them to come up with a surgery with no sexual sides. They have PVP laser surgery now. I
had a lot of complications and uncomfortable days. Everything seems to be still working properly sex wise, lol. It is supposed to take up to 6 weeks or more to help my other symptoms. The frequency is still there so far. Everything else seems better so far. My bladder probably needs to be trained now. It's not used to holding much. This procedure works better for some than others. Different sides too. I'm lucky so far.

Did a short full body routine today. Walked another mile. Doing pretty good cutting back on my eating. I'm down 3 pounds. Not sure I want to continue this wimpy workout journal. Maybe I'll come back when I can post some good workouts.

Hang in there Bob. Better surgical procedures or not, that was still a major impact on your body. It'll take time to heal properly, & IMO your main job is to keep your head on straight and your spirits up as best you can. Discouragement is a natural part of the healing process. Keep eating clean, take whatever supps you need, walk longer & longer everyday, stay in touch with your doc, & soon enough you'll be looking back at all of this as a memory. Don't go away & get holed up somewhere, ok?

Hey Bob

The break from heavy lifting will probably mean you will come back stronger.
Use this time with the lighter weights to really concentrate on form and range of movement. We all pick up bad habits with our lifting, see this as a chance to focus on the movement.
Any joint/ligament issues will have time to heal as well.

Keep it up bob :)

Thanks Joe and Paul. I'm not discouraged in any way. I was just thinking this will be a boring thread to follow. I'm always up to the challenge getting back in shape. I'm back and forth with it all the time. This is definitely a different challenge.

Bob, when you can't lift for exercise, it's quite alright (really!) to do other things. Swimming, walking, tennis, squash ... you name it. Lots of stuff take energy and build muscle tone (and endurance) ... and are lots of fun, too. I'm not sure underwater basket weaving would count, though. ;)

I have been doing a lot of walking. It feels too early to be doing much more. Maybe another couple weeks. Swimming would be good. The water is freezing everywhere so far. I just opened the pool over the weekend. the water is 55 degrees.

I got 6 email notifications that you posted in my journal.

Glad to see you are staying at things and being patient. 10 years ago, I had to have 20 centimeters of my colon removed. I was in such a bad way for a couple of months after the operation that I never thought I would feel well again, let alone workout again. But once I got the green light to lift again, I just stayed patient and consistent. Before I knew it, I was feeling stronger than ever.

I'm betting the same is going to come down for you as well.

Hi Barb and Chris. I had a long work day today. It sure is a lot easier when I'm in good shape. It was hard making it through the day. I'm back down to 195 so far from 204. My pants were pretty snug. I'm getting some relief there. I'm still doing very light workouts.

Off topic but here is a video of a friend of mine's boat. His is the one with 3 engines. I love boating and can't wait to get mine going. Memorial weekend is usually my first time out.

Hang in there Bob, life is a journey. You are doing the right thing. To get anywhere you have to first head in the right direction and start walking, you are doing that. On a side note, since this is the over 35 section I wonder if we should have a seperate journal section for those of us with BPH. I know when I was playing in a band for years in my 30's I would by dying for our break and I always joked that I had a bladder the size of a walnut, years later I found out it wasn't a joke.

Well I don't have it anymore Blake! I wish everything I did didn't involve physical work. Then I could actually heal up.

Another newcomer. Good to have you here. I'm hoping to turn this into a workout journal very soon. I am actually doing pretty good keeping muscle size with super light weight and a lot of reps. Since I'm not overtaxing the muscles I hit them several times a week. Only the the upper body with weight. The legs involve too much core.

Happy Mother's Day girls!

I just found out my scale is off by 7.5 pounds! I worked in a doctor's office last night and I weighed 207.5 on a few scales. My ideal weigh is like 175 - 180 to be at 10 - 12% BF so I am way off. No wonder I am tired all the time. Try walking around with 15 pounds dumbells for a while. You get tired a lot quicker. A lot of people say don't worry about the scale. It is true in some ways but I think a lot of people over estimate their lean mass and do need to watch the scale. The fat goes on a lot easier than the muscle. I still don't look too fat because I am tall but it's there.

On the scale, the most important thing is the overall trend, not the number... and the only way to really follow that closely is to use the same scale and weigh about the same time I think. Bodyweight can fluctuate by a couple of pounds throughout the day with hydration, food, etc...

Maybe buy a new accurate scale and just use it as you get back on track. :)

I need a new psyche. It's easy to get in the boring winter months. In the summer I have a lot of things to keep me occupied. I seem to be good at maintaining a weight. I wonder how I would do if I got lean. Maybe I would stay that way without much effort. It's funny how I maintained a BW of 190 eating the way I am now and I am at 205. (200) My scale.

I've been swimming more and more every evening. I went heavier on the bench press to see how I would do.

115 x 12

179 x 7

Hello everyone!

Went to all my post op appointments this week. Everything is fine now. BPH is gone, blood pressure 120/70, I'm off all meds. Now it's back to work! I am up to 212 pounds. That's a record for me in my older years. Back in 2002 I got down to 170. In the 170's I had the strength I have now so it is all fat! I'll be buying some gym clothes today and joining a gym after work.

I joined Planet Fitness tonight! $99. for a whole year and a T-Shirt. I felt like I was starting from the beginning again. I lost a lot of strength. It did feel good getting back to it anyway. Since I haven't used any machines I will probably use quite a few in the gym along with the free weights.

Last night at home;

Bench presses only. Nice slow reps
135 x 10 x 4

I am super sore from those today.

Tonight

seated smith military
25's x 10 x 4

seated db presses
30's x 10
40's x 10

cybex lateral raise machine
25 x 10
45 x 10

smith upright rows
10's x 10 x 3

wide grip pulldowns
80 x 10
90 x 10
100 x 10

big difference from my machine.

low rows
80 x 10 x 2

close grip pulldowns
85 x 10
105 x 10

one set of leg presses with 150. I have to super slowly start legs again to avoid my usual cramping. It felt great to workout again!

Thanks for stopping in Marcos.

Tonight's second gym experience. Everyone shows up on Mondays!

Flat bench Press
135 x 10
155 x 10
185 x 6
205 x 4

Incline db presses
40's x 10
55's x 10 x 2

fly machine
90 x 10 x 3
Too much. Felt my shoulders more than chest. Next time I'll go lighter.

Seated db curls
35's x 10 x 2

machine preacher
40 x 10 x 2

machine curl
50 x 10 x 2

The workout felt good tonight. I'm liking the variety with some machines thrown in. Now I need to work on diet! It's only a little better.

That's a record for me in my older years. Back in 2002 I got down to 170. In the 170's I had the strength I have now so it is all fat! I'll be buying some gym clothes today and joining a gym after work.

excellent stuff. glad you're able to get back at it with the new membership.

Thanks for stopping in Marcos.

Tonight's second gym experience. Everyone shows up on Mondays!

Flat bench Press
135 x 10
155 x 10
185 x 6
205 x 4

Incline db presses
40's x 10
55's x 10 x 2

fly machine
90 x 10 x 3
Too much. Felt my shoulders more than chest. Next time I'll go lighter.

Seated db curls
35's x 10 x 2

machine preacher
40 x 10 x 2

machine curl
50 x 10 x 2

The workout felt good tonight. I'm liking the variety with some machines thrown in. Now I need to work on diet! It's only a little better.

You think Mondays are bad..wait till Jaunary!

Nice looking workout Bob! Keep up the good work!

It's good to see you all posting in my journal. I need all the motivation I can get these days. I was relaxed with my eating for a few months now. I see how restricted I actually have to be now. It's going to take a long time to get this fat off. I'll do it though. My wife likes me eating what everyone else in the family eats. That has to stop. She just made a nice baked ziti too. I say what are you doing to me? Your making it hard for me to get started. She says she put in half the ziti it calls for. Now a serving is only like 600 calories!

Hi Bob,
I hear you, it is always difficult to do the "special" meals thing. I am lucky in that my wife has also changed her life style and we are eating better as a family, although she does not eat 300g of protein like me??

Stick to it and everybody will be soon asking that this "special" eating is making a difference.

Good luck

Hey Bob,

Know what you mean on the diet. I am going to have to go balls to the wall again like I did in Feb and Mar. I am trying to vary my diet some, and it's not working to well, so I have to go back to the same thing, day in and out, just to lose the weight. I am stuck at 200 or so, and I really want to get to 170-175.

Good luck to you, and I am glad you are back with us.

Tonight I did a lot more machine work. I haven't used machines like this in years.

Shoulder press machine
80 x 10
100 x 10
110 x 10
with this machine you hand go together at the top.

seated db raises
40's x 10
45's x 8
lost it quick on these

lateral raise machine
40 x 10 x 3
this one is good for my elbow because it is supported.

wide grip pulldowns
80 x 10
100 x 10
110 x 10
less pulleys on this machine

close grip pulldowns
120 x 10
140 x 10
160 x 10
different machine more pulleys

low rows
80 x 10
90 x 10
100 x 10

pushdowns
100 x 10
120 x 10
140 x 10
different machine again. It's hard to figure out amounts
quick they are all so different.

tri extension machine
70 x 10 x 3
this one isolated the tri's good. I bet they will be good and sore soon.

1 hour fast walk again. About 3 miles. I ate a little better today. The worst thing I had was some cereal. I'm slowly getting back to my good habits that took me years to get.
lying tri db extensions
35's x 10, 8

Not sure if you are aware of this and maybe you are but what I typically tell people who are just starting out and are not too sure how to setup a plan is to set one long term goal and several short term goals to reach the long term goal.

i.e if You want to lose 20lbs in 8 months (Long term goal) to attain that set short term goals of 2.5lbs a month, which mentally and physically seems more realistic and doable. What I find is that the mind steers away from something that seems to be unrealistic or unattainable thus you lose before you even begin, "what the mind believes the body perceives" In essence setting up short term goals mentally seems realistic and your body reacts to it by sticking to the plan. Every time you hit that mark you are closer to reaching your long term goal.

Hey Motivation Where Are The Workouts!

I just started back but I'm not new to this. I had a long recovery period from surgery in April. I'm still not 100% recovered but as far as working out I am good to go 100% now. In my 20's I was very dedicated for 5 years and competed twice. Since 2004 I've come back and stopped several times. I know what I need to do but haven't really set my mind to go at it all out. I enjoy too many things in life and you know how much dedication this takes. I am having fun changing myself even in short periods. One day I will finally give it my all and see how good I can look. I will be 50 next April so maybe this will be my year. It won't be getting any easier if I keep waiting. Thanks for your input and I hope you keep coming back in here. All you guys and girls are great motivators!

ChocolateGirl Hey Bob!

Hi Elise!

Tonight I rode a bicycle outside for 35 minutes and walked another 20. My old bike was a good workout. It doesn't glide very well. I'll come up with a split soon. Like I said before it takes a while for me to do regular leg workouts without cramping. The biking, walking, some deep knee bends will be first. I'll do some light squats in my basement too.

Yes. You support your chest on a pad and reach for hammer grip handles. As you pull them toward you the handles widen. Felt pretty good. I've never been a fan of machines. I'm trying them all out. They do feel pretty good and I've been getting really sore.

Man, I tell you.....I've been waking up at 185 for a week now and it feels good. But....damn it, it takes a long time to do this every time! I've been real sore all the time. There is a boating poker run I am getting into this weekend. All high performance boats racing to each stop. Should be a blast.

To be honest I don't remember my all my amounts tonight. So I won't post amounts

seated shoulder press

upright rows
3 sets
lateral raises
3 sets

alternating standing db curls
3 sets
preacher curls

tricep extensions

almost cramped when I got in my truck. If I did squats I definitely would have.

Lots of interesting people in the gym tonight. One guy was smoking near the front door before going in on the treadmill. He lasted a few minutes. The hack squat machine may work good for me. "Just" swam last night. Ever try running in the water? Your legs get tired fast. Got another you looked pumped. You must be working out hard comment last night. Getting all these comments and I am fatter than I have ever been. Fat over muscle does make them appear big in clothes. I could easily pack more on too. I'd rather be lean and muscular with my shirt off anyday.

Lots of journals in here. I was on the 4th page. The gym sure is interesting. Between sets I like to see what everyone is doing. It gets you wondering how technical do we need to be? The two biggest guys in there had terrible form. Someone had 345 on the bar for bench presses. He lies down butt is in the air. He brings the bar down a few inches and back up. It wasn't lock out day either. A half hour later they were done with bench presses. I was done with chest and back before they finished inclines.

Yeah, I'm sure it's cool having access to all the different stuff you normally wouldn't have in a home set-up. That's a great price, too. But for me, I broke the barrier early last year, of needing anything else to motivate me to workout. In other words, I've learned to like working out by myself...in my own little world :)

I am joining the biggest loser contest posted here. I've eaten everything I wanted long enough. I have stabilized at 212 pounds. I'm carrying more fat than I have in my whole life. My arms now measure 17". Even though they feel tight it is interesting to see how much fat you can hold and have it look fairly solid. My strength is where it was when I was in the 180# range so I know it's added fat. My waist is approaching 42! The low was 36.5 a couple years ago. I measure the biggest part of my gut.

I go up and down with my weight a lot. I will be 50 next April. I want to finally get in great shape because it is getting harder every year. Down to 10% would be nice by next April. By Christmas a good goal will be to get back to 190 pounds. Then I will continue from there.

Instead of going to the gym I went to look at Harley's. Was it a good decision? I tried an 06 XL 1200R Sportster. It does have the rubber mounted engine and Screamin Eagle pipes. Sounded and felt awesome! The XT225 Yamaha I have is not good for the road. I have to hang on tight in a little wind. It doesn't have enough power for me, and I can only sit on that seat for 15 minutes before my butt is sore. Today will be gym day.

I had to drive it home tonight. It was a 45 minute ride on busy highways. I hadn't ridden a heavy bike in years.

That means you probably got a decent leg workout, right? :D I'll bet you forgot how heavy those are, and I'm sure bumper to bumper traffic reminded you :).

Funny you said that. I was wondering why my legs were sore. I've been neglecting leg workouts because I haven't been going enough so I won't get cramps all the time.

I'm still at 210. No change this week. I ate better but not enough to lose I guess. I'm cutting back very gradually. I don't want to get back to hardly eating and still not lose. Plus a week hasn't gone by where someone tells me how good I look.

I worked out with someone in their 20's today. He was a couple reps stronger than me. I sure push a lot harder with a partner. It was short though. I got that very shaky weak feeling when I was done with chest.

Flat bench
135 x 10
155 x 8
185 x 6
205 x 8

incline db presses
60's x 10
70's x 10
80's x 6 and one assisted rep

cable incline press machine
3 sets x 10

Harley's. Was it a good decision? I tried an 06 XL 1200R Sportster. It does have the rubber mounted engine and Screamin Eagle pipes. Sounded and felt awesome! .

Hi Bob,

Sounds great where are the pics :)

We watched Wild Hogs the other night and I was wanting a bike but have to wate for the kids to get older.

Hi Bob

Great wo's.

Congrates on the bike, another biker around is great news. I must admit I am not a shiny bike type of biker, I prefer the go fast plastic ones. Show us some pics....

Enjoy the wo's and the rider, keep it safe.

I took some of the shine off of it last night. I lost it on a corner. I got away with only a few scrapes. I wasn't going fast. I really don't know what happened. Before I hit the trees I just slammed the back brake and slid down the road and into the dirt.

Hibiscus09 Morning, Bob! Congrats on the bike purchase. Be careful.

Hi Hib. I'll have to be even more careful!

Nice job on the workout!
