I just perked up after looking at that avatar! I just bought the vitamin C two days ago. A little late. Do you take it everyday or just when you feel something coming on? I take a multi everyday. I also read about hormone imbalances lowering resistance to sickness. Maybe the endo will find something.
I take 500mg a day when I'm well and ~ 1g/day when I feel something coming on. Your body can't store vitamin C so you need to take it am and pm. Further, because you can't store it, you can't really take "too much." Linus Pauling recommended doses of 4g/day, I think. In any case, you'll know if you've taken too much because it will give you the runs. I've never taken enough for that to happen but that's the worst that can happen (and it will stop as soon as you back off).
Feel better soon!
How did your daughter hurt her shoulder? It makes mine hurt just to read about it!

Thanks for the Vitamin C info. The Ortho told us it is fairly common for young teens to have loose shoulder joints. The therapist said the same thing. All she was doing when it popped out was watching TV on her stomach. When she went to get up it popped out and stayed out for 20 minutes. She only weighs 96 so it wasn't a lot of weight against it. She is now going to be doing several shoulder exercises to strengthen it. We got one of those stretch bands. I think I will try it too.
Good info on the vitamin C. Sorry to hear about your daughters shoulder. That sounds very painful. Hope she recovers quickly.

Oh my goodness Bob sorry your daughter had to go through that, poor little one.
glad to hear you are taking a multi I have them, just forget to take mine.
make sure yours don't have Iron.
CC is right about the C if you take a lot it gives you the runs in fact once in a while I will do a Vitamin C flush that is taking a C every hour until you get the runs , weird I know but it cleans you out.
PS I probably already said this but Garlic isn't just for scarring away vampires or husbands. I load up on it when I don't feel good.
Hope you get better soon

Thanks Rose. Why no iron? Don't they all have it? I'll pass on the garlic. I don't care for any type of spices. I am feeling a little better. I'll be fine to workout next week or over the weekend I think.

Hi Bob, I have been having a fair bit of trouble with illness this year. Normally I would rarely get sick, but I think a combination of weight training draining the immune system and my daughter starting school this year and is bringing home more bugs is contributing to me being sick more often.
I started taking L-Glutamine about a month ago and managed to miss the last bug that went through my family, I don't know if this is just coincidence or not.
Cheers Al

Just a regular cold doesn't bother me Dom. I get them like the Flu. I am super weak for a couple days then the cold actually breaks out. I think I'll take off until Monday unless I do a small basement workout. I get all feverish feeling just doing a little here and there.

Hi Bob, sorry to hear you are sick. Sometimes overtraining can lead to sickness because it compromises your recovery system. Maybe you'll be better with a few days rest. Hope you feel better soon!

I'm starting to get bad habits eating again. I'll try to get my foods on fitday for a while to get back on track. I did it yesteday for the heck of it to see where I am at. The calories weren't real high but the macros were bad.
I copied Elise's guidelines she posted in another thread. I like those and will try to get closer to those. The only question I have on those is figured from a bodyweight point instead of LBM point. I weigh 220 instead of 190 now. My LBM hasn't changed much. I guess it is still around 150 - 155#'s. At 220 I would need 330 grams of protein which seems high.

I am not a nutritional expert, but I would lean (no pun intented) towards using the LBM for determining your protein targets. Now that I say that I am sure Elise will be in here to correct me :)

It really is hanging on. I don't eat great but not real bad for the amount I am hanging on to. I'll really focus on diet to get back to where I need to be. The problem is I like variety. I hate eating the exact same thing everyday. That makes it even harder to get the macros where they need to be.
Even my breakfast which seems healthy and good needs working on. I had a 1/2 cup oatmeal (before cooking), 1/3 cup cottage cheese, 1/4 cup milk, and 10 walnuts. This is too high in fat, not enough protein. It was too much milk anyway. I'll add some egg whites and reduce the milk. The walnuts give it some taste but make the fat high. I'll take this one meal at a time and try to get things where they should be. I don't know about veges in the am. I don't think that will be happening.

It's going to be hard to keep the fat real low. I eat extra lean beef, buffalo, cottage cheese. They still have a lot of fat. The NF cottage cheese doesn't taste half as good but maybe I'll have to do that again. Skim milk bothers me. I would have to use lactaid but it gets expensive buying everything special for me. Our food bill is already over a thousand a month. There are 6 of us here and several friends eating too.

Here is some info on why I don't have my hubby take iron and I only take Iron on those ladie days :) Oh and yes you can buy multis with out
Who should be cautious about with iron supplements?
Iron deficiency is uncommon among adult men and postmenopausal women. These individuals should only take iron supplements when prescribed by their qualified health care provider because of the risk of iron overload. Iron overload is a condition in which excess iron is found in the blood and stored in organs such as the liver and heart. Iron overload is associated with several genetic diseases including hemochromatosis, which affects approximately 1 in 250 individuals of northern European descent(45). Individuals with hemochromatosis absorb iron very efficiently, which can result in a build up of excess iron in organs and can cause organ damage such as cirrhosis of the liver and heart failure(1,3,46-48). This condition often is not diagnosed until the excess iron stores have damaged an organ. Iron supplementation may accelerate the effects of hemochromatosis, an important reason why adult men and postmenopausal women who are not iron deficient should not take iron supplements. Individuals with blood disorders who require frequent blood transfusions are also at risk of iron overload and should not take iron supplements.

Why are you going low fat? I would not do this, especially if you think you have hormone-related probelms. Stick with at least .3g/fat per pound of bodyweight, and feel free to go higher than that. Just keep the fats healthy.

Bob, I eat loads of nuts and use extra virgin olive oil on everything. I have never found that these items affect my body composition negatively. My cottage cheese is 2% (I eat it rarely) and so is my Greek Yogurt. I don't wat red meat at all, so I can't speak to that. At one points, I was having salmon (wild caught) daily, which is also high in fat. I put ground flax in my mornng shake every day (another fat). My diet is definitely NOT low fat. Fat is essential to hormone regulation and, especially as we age, going low fat is not at all helpful. What I would avoid is a lot of saturated fat. I like the mono-unsaturated fats best (polyunsaturated are a mixed bag).

I've been eating buffalo a lot. My wife gets lean ground beef quite a bit for meatballs so I have that too. Your right that if I just watch the bad fats and probably the processed stuff I should be fine. A lot of diets I read on here I could never do long term. What I am eating now I could. Adding crap to it is usually my problem. Writing it down should help that.

A lot of the diets I see on here are neither effective nor healthy, imo. You have to find a lifestyle change that you can not only make in the short term but live with in the long term. ;)

Thanks, it was a great investment. The spotting bars adjust easy, you can lower for deads so the 45's are only an inch off the ground, it has a pullup bar, and I have two dip handles that attach to one side.

I'm feeling like I eat twice as much lowering the carbs and eating more protein than usual. It will take a while for my stomach to get used to it. At least I'm never really hungry. A big part of eating right will be having the right foods home. We run out of everything quick. Couldn't work out or do cardio. I had a bad headache from this cold and very congested with a cough. The night before workout did't help it much. 3 ibruprofens wouldn't get rid of the headache.

I've had a lot of physical and personal problems the past quite a few years. I really haven't been getting anywhere. When I do I will be back. Kevin even pointed out.
But Bob, let's cut through the ****; you used to compete, and you've asked for diet help/advice since you "rejoined" her last year. You've never given anyone's advice a real chance, and continue to eat Bob's way. So, what's the fucl<ing point of even asking about something specific like the difference between real food and supplemental food? All you've been doing is spinning your wheels...and that's cool. Just quit wasting people's time asking the same BS over and over again. ****...or get off the fucl<ing pot.

The protein is bloating and gasing me up pretty good. I'm not used to much more than 150 grams a day. I kept it a little lower today to give it a break.
Today I did some BW exercises. I sure need them. In the 25 rep range I am terrible. The burn is unbelievable. I did deep knee bends, step ups, lunges, and pushups. Quick paced sets.

I was thinking I'd get used to it after a few days. I'm wondering how accurated my supposedly super accurate food scale is. I just weighed 6 oz. of tuna from a can and it weighed 4 oz. I wonder if it's the scale or the can of tuna that's wrong. I'll do some more checking. Maybe this is why I have to eat so much to get enough and I'm actually getting a lot! Edited...it was the water. I had squeezed it out. A 6oz. can of tuna has about 2 oz. of water.

Hi Bob
I also experienced cramps and gas with the high protein, I have expiremented with the amount, type off and when I take it. Normally I get past it, my worse times were when I was at 200g, now I have pushed to 300g with 3 protein shakes a day it seems a lot better. If I have a couple of days off the diet and have to push the protein back up then I go through all that again.
In short try push your protein intake up higher, I hope this helps.

One thing I did learn from the incident last week is that you've competed. Can you tell me more of how you prepped for the show(s)? What kind of diet and training did you follow, did you hire any one to help you, etc.?
I'm also interested in what you did for your posing routine, what song and tempo did you use?
I know the detials are not transferable, but good ideas are.;)

I'm always willing to transfer any details. I did it Bob's way, lol. I didn't hire anyone. I was just a kid really. I did one at 23 and one at 24 years old. The huge difference is I always felt great back then. It is so much easier when you actually have some energy.
I didn't change my training and didn't do cardio. I always fought to get stronger. I also added a lot of body weight exercises between my routines. I did a lot of pushups, dips, and thousands of situps. I did them for 45 minutes at one point. I posed in the mirror a lot. I looked at pics of poses. I went to a couple local shows to watch routines.
The first show I picked a song no one knew which was a mistake. If you want the audience to get excited about the music pick a popular song. The song was Time Bomb by Lake. The second show was Only The Lonely by The Motels. That was popular in the 80's. It still doesn't make you look better, lol.
I was not big by any means. The first show I was 173 and the second I was 183. About a year apart. For food I ate a lot of salads, lots of lean beef, whole chickens, turkeys, egg whites, fish, tuna, and drank gallons of crystal light lemonade. My system won't even tolerate much meat these days. The closer it got to the show the less I ate. I'm sure I lost a lot more muscle than having a nutrionist. Even so I got pretty ripped. I was super psyched all the time which helped tremendously.
If I figure out what's ailing me I'll get cut again. For now nothing works like it did before. Hope this helps a little. The shows were a blast. Have fun!

I was wondering if anyone would notice so i didn't make a comment with it. It was a low day. No shakes. Wait I forgot to add my beef jerky. I ate a lot of homemade jerky. 6oz. I'll go make the change. Thanks for checking up! I also had 2 slices of pizza for the first time in a few weeks. I felt stuffed after only 2.

Have fun!
Thanks for sharing!
Times were different back then! They seem to have made it very complicated now. The days are over when an audience member in fantastic shape can grab some speedos and compete. Crystal light is still a mainstay for many though!
We're you a naturally ripped guy?
Would you ever compete in a tested show, once you straighten out your imbalances? Thanks again Bob, I love hearing about this stuff!:)
Your cals are pretty low, are you seeing any of the results you want from this?

I was always skinny fat. Those were the only times I got cut or even really tried to be back then. The past 5 years It is harder and harder to lose fat. I'm thinking it is hormonal. If I eat more than this I gain fat. I tried it this past year and I gained a lot of fat. I have no interest in competing again. I'd be happy to be energetic and in great shape.

Thank you all for the posts.
My back is fine from the nose blowing. Now it hurts from snow blowing, lol. :lmao:
I went to the endo doc yesterday. The blood work results will be back in one to two weeks. I told him all my symptoms. He said they sound like half the population. The doctors are still stumped why we get BPH. I don't think that half the population had prostate surgery. That was my main reason for the visit. I don't want to go through that again. No one can give me an answer. They seem to have never heard the things I read on the internet.
I have read in several places it can be from lowering test levels and elevated estrogen. He hadn't heard that. He wasn't even going to test for estrogen. I talked him into it. He said men aren't generally tested for that. The tender nipple thing could be from prolactin. That will be tested. The weakness was the one he said most people had along with a slow metabolism. He suggested energy bars and eating even fewer than 2000 calories. That would go over big with a BB crowd.
I'll get some workouts in here and there over the holidays. I'll come up with a new plan and psyche for the first of the year. It will be another fat loss plan of course. It's my main problem all the time.

I've been thinking about what my plans for the new year will be. I seem to feel the best at a much lighter bodyweight. It's a lot easier getting around at 180 than 220. I'll be 50 in April. My goal will be to get back to that by then. My business is a lot slower in the winter months. That will give me more time and energy to focus on my goal.
I know muscle burns fat. More muscle means a faster metabolism. The muscle I have now is my potential for the effort and time I want to put into it. An hour 3-4 times a week with some cardio included is what I like to do and can stick with. My metabolism has slowed drastically over the years. A couple years ago I was able to lose fat on 1600 -1800 calories and still maintain my strength and endurance. I'll probably try that again. It is very low calorie for someone my size but that it what does it for me. A high protein diet keeps me satisfied so it is easy to stick to.
If I gave higher calorie amounts being super strict several months it will probably work but I know that isn't going to happen. I need little results weekly to keep myself diet motivated. I've tried 2000 and higher for 2-3 weeks several times and never lost a pound or anything off the waist. Then I slack.
If I don't lift my bench press strength is over 60 pounds less. Same goes for other lifts proportionately. Also when I don't lift the v-taper goes away and I lose 2 inches in arm size. So with moderate effort I get great results IMO. I was mainly a skinny guy with belly flab before lifting. Now I'm basically a bigger version.
We'll see what the new year brings. Knowing I'll be turning 50 hopefully will give me that extra incentive to stick to my plan. At least I keep trying.

Sounds like a great plan Bob! I'm going to be 40 in April man. I have people tell me or comment that I'm taking in too few calories when I'm at 2300 to 2000 so I know what you're talking about. Bottom line is doing what works for you man and good luck with your goals. We do a bunch of body weight exercises in the boxing and kickboxing workouts I do, and man they can kick my butt. Great way to mix things up though.

Hi Bob,
Is it possible to get the testosterone blood test without going to the family doctor? In other words, can you just go get the blood drawn at a lab?
My insurance wouldn't pay anyway, so I am trying to save some money. I would like to get it checked. All my family doctor ordered at my physical was my free testosterone level. I hear there are two other levels that I need checked.

Nice Bob, what kind of cardio did you do? I haven't done 45 minutes in a while... the beast woy for me to get time in without being bored is road biking. In the gym, about 15 minutes per machine is all I can stand without going looney, so I switch between machines if I want to go longer. :)
That's a low heart rate, faster next time! LOL :D

What a big pisser!!! Training, eating right, cardio, and the hormones are screwed and you put on fat. I'm frustrated for you brother!
I guess the only thing to do is to keep up with the good stuff until the medical aspect of things can be rectified. Perhaps it will kick in on its own, but if not, then you are still doing a great job at damage control before the meds can be prescribed/kick in. I wish you the best Bob.

Great job Bob! How is the eating coming along? I have been eating everything I see, its such a mess right now
The past few years I got into a lot better eating habits. I used to use a lot of sugar, butter, syrup, drink lots of sugared drinks, I ate a lot more high glycemic carbs than meats and fish. I pretty much have all that under control. Around the holidays and special events I do get into the junk. The past few years it has been good enough to keep me at around 15% BF. Not now.

Yeah, there is always something to shoot for! Fat burn is supposedly 90 - 120 BPM. I keep it high in the 20 minute sessions. Like 145+
I use an arc trainer. It's sort of like an eliptical without the handles. You can adjust how hard it is to move the pedals which makes it easy to regulate your heartbeat at the same pace. It's got a calorie counter, pedals per minute, HR monitor, and several different levels for intensity. It seems to be the least boring one I found.

That's basically what I have been doing the past few years as it progresses. At least they finally found a problem to work on. I always lost and gained easily. I also got had great endurance before. I want some of it back! Doctors don't seem to be to up on balancing hormones. Not even the endocrinologist. My test is low and the estradiol is in the upper level of normal. He's not even concerned with the E2 numbers. I found several sources showing that causes prostate problems which are coming back even after surgery. I'm bringing in a big writeup on it and hopefully the endo and uro will at least glance at it.

I think the 'fat burn' zone is misleading... if you go harder you burn more calories overall. Maybe you end up with a less percentage directly from fat, but burning more calories is good.

That stinks Bob... have you tried things like ZMA to maybe help? It helps me sleep deeper, though I get some crazy dreams with it. I have read that you need some sat fat in your diet for test production as well, go figure. A friend of mine is having some problems like that too though, he had to go with the topical gel. He always eats low fat though, I wonder if that contributes. How is your sleep, stress, etc? Sleep problems can manifest themselves in a lot of ways.

Yeah Darren. I think the faster you go with cardio the better off off you are. I just pace myself so I can get through it! There is a lot of new thinking that I don't feel apllies very well. I do get plenty of good and some bad fats. I like my red meat, eggs, fish, walnuts, almonds, cottage cheese. I don't have much stress these days. I was way more aggressive and stressed with higher test levels. They are all good points you are making. The body sees estrogen as test too and that limits production. I'm hoping to lower that and raise it. I'm not looking forward to being on this forever.

Short heavy plus cardio sounds like a good plan Bob. It will be intersting to see what the docs figure out, hopefully they can get to the root of the problem. Good luck and keep us filled in!
Another thing you might want to have checked is your sleep... apnea can cause a lot of problems that are hard to figure out. I knew someone who was just feeling terrible for a long time until they figured out his problem. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleep_apnea

Got to get that bench up then Mike. You want to be proportional. I know you have good numbers on the legs. Just got more tests. Docs aren't good with male hormonal problems. I thought the endo would be. I had limited tests. If you are in range they won't adjust things. Borderline low test and borderline high estradiol aren't a good combo for me.

I'd love to 180 and ripped again. I could lose bodyweight at 3500 calories back then. Now it is 1600 so I don't believe it will be happening too soon. I'm even doing cardio. It's tough getting old.

Today I thought my cardio was real easy. I was on a level 10 steps higher. Heartbeat was only getting to 115. Then I found out the weight was only set on 150. Once I set it back to 225 it all got much harder again. Just another thing playing with the mind. I did burn 600 calories in 42 minutes. I got my HR to 165 at one point. I remember Hib saying she was between 155 and 160 for 20 minutes. That is tough.

Hi Bob! Yep -- post workout that's about where I have my heart rate now. When I worked with Pam, she told me to keep it at 140bpm. I do pre-breakfast cardio at a much lighter pace.
I know people say you lose lean mass that way, but so far I'm gaining lean mass and losing fat -- so whatever. I think losing lean mass has more to do with lack of nutritional support. Of course, when you get uber lean towards the end of contest prep -- it gets more and more difficult to hang onto the lean mass.

My weight is finally getting under control I think. I got up to 228 without a lot of junk food. I'm a lot bigger all over but the gut is way too big. I'm back down to 219 at the same calorie intake basically. I need to lose a lot before vacation time in April. I'll continue with more cardio and less lifting. My compound lifts are still going up so I think I am doing the right thing. On BP I got 235 x 5 the other day. I think it is the most I did since getting back to lifting the past 5 years.

It probably isn't right but the Arc Trainer said I burned 700 calories in 45 minutes today!
From what I've heard/read, the arc trainer burns a butt load of calories. Nice job!

I wish they did because I would have put on a few pounds of muscle over the last couple of days :o
WOW! That's great Bob. :D
I ?ll have to give the Arc a try tonight see how many cals I can burn in 20 I can't hang for 45
I'll have to go see what you did. It's good your husband is into it too.
It could be Bob... I know road biking can burn about 2000 cals per hour at 18 mph or so... LOL

Especially uphill!
Hi Bob,
Just popped in to say hi
Enjoy your week of lifting

Hey Marcos. Good to have you around again. Now I'm the one not posting much.

Good to hear. I do hear people say it is hard for them. My sister for one. My feet seem to fall asleep after a while on that thing. I have to keep moving my toes.
Still not able to do what I want energy wise but keeping my strength. BP numbers are still my favorite to track. My workouts have been pretty limited for now. I have another doc appt today. Not really getting anywhere with them. I manage to get cardio in around 3 times a week which isn't enough to lose the fat I want. Still doing my lateral raises, pushups, single leg squats, light curls, and military presses. Went to the gym for cardio but there were no parking spots and several people waiting for one to open. I'll have to remember to avoid 5pm. Here's my BP numbers from last night;
115 x 5
135 x 5
155 x 3
179 x 1
205 x1
223 x 1
244 x 1
256 x 1
267 x 1
283.5 x 1

Hope you had a good weekend Hib!
Doctor called me at my house Saturday night! Said my cholesterol went way up. Then says I gained a lot of weight, lol. I went there in the beginning saying I can lose fat and feels like I have hormonal problems. That was back in July!
On the good side the hormone part of it is getting better. I did lose 4 pounds. Actually I had lost 9 but gained 5 back Super Bowl weekend. He wants to put me on Lipitor. I don't want it! I am going to tell him Monday I want to get it back to normal with diet and exercise now that the hormone thing is headed in the right direction.
I'll be doing the same. Lots of cardio and short heavy weight routines. 45 minutes today for 660 calories. I want to do that everyday now.

Wow. Thats alot going on there Bob. With respect to the cardio.. if you do 45 minutes everyday, where do you go from there?
Sharing my misery... I am in a weird place right now. My bicep tendinitis has me backing off of my workouts and I just can't seem to get excited about diet when I can't workout hard. I am not sure what I am going to do.
Hehe - sorry for stopping my your journal only to whine about my situation! :D

Misery loves company! After I lose the fat with cardio probably gain it back JS! Lol.
You have plenty of muscle to get lean and look great. You can always get more muscle when the aches go away.
We went out this weekend for a dinner, comedy show, and band. It was a great time. The comedian wa real funny. He blew up one of those long skinny balloons. He tied it up with two balls on end. It was about two feet long. Then he put it in his mouth slowly. A few minutes later it was all in his mouth up to the balls. Everone was amazed! Then he took it out and it was all deflated. Then he said "Do you think I would actually do that? Do I look stupid?" And then put the balls over his eyes.

OMG Bob - unless you absolutely can't get your cholesterol down, avoid the statins like the plague. I know so many people who had horrible muscle pain from taking them
Good for you, for being proactive! :D

Thanks so much. I just called an hour ago and said I didn't want it.

Now that my hormone levels are straightening out things are happening. I'll be fine very soon. The Estradiol is th eone to get checked. It took since last July for me to get that started. It's down from 39 to 33. I want it at 20. That E2 binds up the T.

45 minutes on the arc trainer for 650 calories burned. My shoulder has been bothering me from a tetanus shot. Maybe some weights tomorrow.

Today was clearing snow for cardio. Did sets of 5 up to 235 for BP and did some close grip bp's and curls. I'm going to slowly work more lifting in now that the fat is finally dropping for me.

I bet the snow shovelling worked the soreness out!!
I am doing the arc trainer too. Do you think it really burns that many calories? I went about 2.8 miles in one hour, at a heart rate of about 138, and it said I burned 893 calories. Walking 2.8 miles would burn about 300 calories, tops. I just don't see how we could burn that much more on an ARC trainer.

I've mentioned that before. I don't think it burns as much as it says. It makes you feel like you did a lot when that number is high. I like speedometers that read high too.
