WE ALL KNOW that music gets us pumped and ready to go for our work out, cardio or lifting, aerobic or anaerobic, but do we actually use it to its fullest? I am going to tell you how.

MUSIC AND EMOTIONS
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Music responds to our emotions. The more mellow a song is, the more down we are, possibly even depressed. The faster, more heavy a song is, or even just a beat (techno) the more our emotions make us up beat and ready for the work out.

Emotions play a great role in our every day lives. So, why wouldn't they effect our lifting? Let's face it, they do. Emotions effect everything. If you're listening to some country song about losing your dog, your truck, and your mom, you most likely arent going to be pumped for a work out. Find something that you respond to in a good way, and hopefully highly intense.

MUSIC IN THE MORNING
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In the morning, especially before a run/jog/etc, you need something to boost you. Some of us use Ripped Fuel or other supplements that give us a metabolic boost. If you want to run COMPLETELY empty or just something to add to your supp, music is the answer. If you are ever tired and need something good to get ya goin in the morning, pop in something that "you know" gets you pumped or woke up. This can increase the intensity you put out, and can increase your pain threshold by applying the mind to the music and not focusing on the pain.

MUSIC AFTER A LONG DAY-the extra get-go after work/school
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After your 8 hour day at work or after you get out of those BORING, lame classes, you need something to give you a boost. Music is the answer! anything that you respond to effectively and positively is a good source. I, personally, find that heavy metal such as Pantera, Mudvayne, or Slipknot do the job to get me going in the morning or even the mid day. If i just got out of school and its time to lift, or even after i do a job, geuss what i do. I pop in some music. I also find that stretching while listening to music gets you pumped. The blood gets pumping even better.

TYPES OF MUSIC THAT ARE PROVEN TO WORK! *
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
good ol' Rock&Roll - ex: Lynard Skynard, the Eagles, the Who.
Techno - ex: Rob Zombie, Eifel55, europop
Heavy metal(my fav)- ex: Pantera, Mudvayne, Slipknot, Primer55
Rockabilly(mix of country and rock)- ex: Joe Diffy, etc.
anything else that will give you that extra pump before your workout.

* done with people i know. 11/11 people agreed music gives them the extra pump they need for the intensity in their lifting/running.

Purpose of Music in a bodybuilder's life: get the blood pumping to increase intensity and ensure you get those last few reps in for maximum burn.

THE HOW
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Everyone hates being down or tired. Sometimes, even with sufficient rest, we awaken tired and sometimes feel like we cant move.

SET THE ALARM TO MUSIC- if you have a music/radio alarm, set it to a station that plays alot of your favorite, fast paced music. Most of the time you will wake up with a song you enjoy and if you know the words, you might want to sing along and get your brain working early in the morning.

AVOID DOWNER MUSIC- by downer i mean, anything that can make you feel sad, lonely, or any negative feeling. the more positive the music , the more positive the person.

LET THE MUSIC TAKE EFFECT- dont say to yourself, "i just cant do it today, i cant hardly move" ..you CAN move. All you have to do is let yourself move. Even if your run starts out horrible, in 3 minutes, you'll be energetic.

USE A WALKMAN TO RUN(or CD man)- the music keeps your mind focused on the music, and not the run itself. Thus, you are not so worried about that pain/cramp in your side, you are trying to remmeber the words. Again, your pain threshold becomes a factor that is side-tracked by the music. Also, your run seems shorter and easier, but you still used the same pace and kept your heart rate up the same! Maybe even higher. Music has been proven (by scientists, not by me) to raise the heart rate.

MUSIC SHOULD HAVE A GOOD, STEADY BEAT- use something that gives you u a pace you can work with. Make the music faster than the pace you USUALLY use for your workout. Not only might you increase your pace, and tear down those muscles until their almost dead, but you, most likely, will feel a lot better after the work out, and not tired/exhausted.

Use music to its fullest potential and dont neglect the facts. It has been and always will be, a natural pump for the bood.

I know music sure does help me get going, especially when i'm running on a treadmill. I love some lynard skynard, led zepplin, and on the other hand, any rap with some heavy bass gets me going as well. I personally prefer some bad ass three-six mafia.

(for those that don't know, this is rap by the way)

a little bush (machine head, everything zen, little things) really does the trick too

i liked your topic alot!

I HAVE to have my CD player in the gym blasting. My workouts definitely suffer when I don't have it.

I agree with Big-n on the heavy stuff.

Gotta have: Pantera(my signature says it all!), Slipknot, Mudvayne, MushroomHead, Sevendust, Staind (not the new album), Static X, just to name a few!

Good article man.

Man, have you guys heard Pantera's Live 101 Proof album?

That cd is awesome. They sound so much better live, especially live versions of 'cowboys from hell' and 'walk'. They also have a prevciously unrealesed song called 'I can't hide' on there which kicks ass.

Agreed. I'm a personal fan of putting on some Deftones, Korn, Ill Nino, Mushroomhead, Soil, etc. etc. to get me more pumped for my workout :D

Yeah definately agree, without music i could probally only bench about 10 pounds !!!.

Here are some of my favourite bands to listen to, and yeah i know im a metal head but its the only thing that can get me really Psyched (spelling) for a decent workout.

Linkin Park
Korn
LostProphets
Guns & Roses
Papa Roach
Coal Chamber
Limp Bizkit
Metallica
Crazy Town
Iron Maiden

All of the above bands rule at getting you going before and during your workout.

Korn is my favorite. I love to listen to the album Follow the Leader. That ish gets me pumped. I also like 311 but only when i'm doing cardio. Godsmack is also one of my favorites to listen to. When i'm lifting heavy i need music that kicks you in the face. The gym i go to plays F'in ja rule and j-lo followed by alanis morisette. God i hate my gym!

For me, i have to listen to music during workouts. I found that rap music works the best for me. Stuff like Eminem, Nelly, Ludacris, Xzibit, Dr Dre, and other stuff like that.

Hard music is actually a drawback for me. I work out in the mornings, and I can focus very well without music once I set my mind to it.

The gym plays a top-40ish adult contemporary radio station which gets on my nerves sometimes, but I do a good job of blocking it out. And when I hear the same g*d-damn pop song for the third morning in a row, I utilize the anger in the workout.

I read the article above the other week and gave it a try for a number of mornings. I brought my tape player and a handful of my favorite metal/noise/hardcore music. It helped at times, but truth be told, it didn't really make too much of a difference.

Unfortunately, when I went to bed each night some 14 hours later, I had some of the songs playing over and over in my head. That's not exactly a good thing, because it kept me awake and energized.

Don't discount the benefit of more relaxing music, either. Remember, gains come when you are resting! Anything you can do between workouts to reduce those stress levels is going to help you grow, and music can play an even larger role in your post-workout time. I have twice-a-week shiatsu massages and they play really calming new-agey music. I often get so relaxed during the massage that I drift off to sleep.

I finally got tired of the crap they play in my gym so I went out and bought a CD player to workout with. I should have gotten one sooner. Last night I finished with an all-time best at 315x8 on ass to the grass squats. Also, my 15 minutes of cardio post-workout was a breeze. I was listening to the new Sorpion King soundtrack. Thanks for the advice!

Been getting into a little DMB on my MP3 player. Some vintage Joe Cocker, and even a little Leon Russell--Stranger in a strange land, yea!

i'm a HUGE country fan. Country is by far my favorite music to listen to anywhere outside of the gym.

however, in the gym i can't listen to anything unless it's hardcore - no matter what kind of workout i'm doing. i'm about old skool Korn, any of Death Row's old stuff when Pac when around, some of Staind's hard stuff.........ANYTHING THAT JUST THROWS ME INTO RAGE MODE AND MAKES ME WANT TO START BENDING BARBELLS OVER MY HEAD!!!

it's really weird cause, like i said before, i'm a country fan anywhere else. i'm also a quiet, laid back person in general :)

Wow, someone other than me listens to testament. They REALLY get me pumped up to lift. So does Metallica, Pantera, Godsmack, Disturbed, Staind, AC/DC, and many others. I love lifting with music.

Reps for 7 year bump :D

I can work out in silence if I need to, but music helps so much.

Thanks for the great article. This gives me a great idea for my own blog. Maybe a series of playlist for my different workouts. I am a big fan of music in general but when I am pumping iron, I have found nothing works better than heavy metal. Not that screamo stuff, but some really melodic and ear splitting stuff that makes you want to bang your head around. Metallica, Egypt Central, Mastadon, Coheed and Cambria, etc.

Rage against the machine--killing in the name of, espeically the last minute or so
RATM--Wake up, sleep now in the fire, Fistful of steel (especially @ 2:07-2:30 and after 4min mark)
In Her Royal Majesty's Secret Service--Propellerhead, especially the middle and the last third after the bridge
Eminem-->Till I collapse, Sing for the Moment , Lose yourself (parts)

I usually like segments of songs rather than entire songs, and I like progression better than sustained loundess found in metal

when recovering between sets I listen to jason marz, maroon 5, Leona lewis, etc. I'm really a believer in building up....like storm after the calm
