Hey everybody, new here, just started posting in the Over 35 section and I really like it. My workout journal will start 4/30/2007. I will be doing a couple of weeks of strategic deconditioning to allow my joints and tendons and ligaments time to heal. I have been on a 12 week mass schedule and need to give my nervous system time to relax as well. I am coming from a powerlifting background and am instituting more of a bodybuilding mentality, so I will include 4 days of cardio as well. I have decided on 12 weeks of Ultimate Mass 3 split version from Steve Holman at IronMan magazine. I have met Steve and I feel that his philosophy is in line with mine, plus I like the layout of the workouts. I will post as often as time allows, and I will be following a 4000 calorie a day diet with macros at 50/30/20 p/c/f. Once per week calories will be dropped to 3500 with carbs dropped to meet calories and refeeds will be eaten as needed. Supplements will consist of whey protein, MRPs, creatine, glutamine, BCAA's and a good multivitamin as well as something for joint support. Any questions or comments, please feel free to post them.

Thanks!

Welcome to the 35+ journals. Solid looking program. Looking forward to following your progress. I know your title says mass, but are you trying to add lean mass or shed BF? I only ask because those calories just seem awfully low for even a slow mass gain at a weight of 270lbs. I am now on 3200 cals at a BW of 153lbs (7-8%BF) and am just picking up about a pound or two a month and having to increase about 100 cals every month or so to keep growing. You are almost twice my weight but only 800 calories up. Not a criticism, just an inquiry.

Thanks for the input SR800. I have found that at 4000 calories a day at my 50/30/20 macro split that I can gain mass and minimize bodyfat retention if I workout intensely enough. I have tried the 5000, 6000, 7000 calories a day routines and all I get is fat. Being an endomorph means that I gain mass fairly well but that bodyfat is a problem as well. As long as I eat clean I seem to be able to get by on 4000 a day. I really appreciate your input, and at 153 and 7-8% bodyfat you are one ripped dude!!

Nope!! Elliptical and recumbant bike for me. That split on workouts has always been a favorite.

A little more info please. You have "X below middle", "X middle" in parenthesis in your workout description. What do those mean?

After fatigue is reached in the recommended rep range, the weight is pulsed (partial reps) in that area of the stroke. So let's use V Handle chins with X in the middle. After doing as many complete reps as possible you would hoist yourself to the middle position, half way up and do 3 or 4 partial reps to reach true fatigue. This is usually only done on the final set of each exercise as it is brutal. But it works great to make sure that muscular fatigue is reached, not just nuerological shutdown. Did I make any sense??

Welcome!

Thank you ChocolateGirl!!!!

Two. But they were small....:)

250 grams are consumed daily in the form of whey protein/MRP's with whey added. I love me some protein shakes. I have always had a hard time getting my protein without shakes.

Thanks SR800. I was not intending to go heavy today, I am doing a deconditioning. But I did. I will probably scale back my weights about 20% on the bigger lifts next workout. I need some down time to let things heal.

LOL -- welcome Big Tank! :)

The first gym I attended was a gym full of powerlifters. They taught me everything I know. :p The most they could ever get me to do, other than squats and deadlifts, was pull the sled outside. Other than that, I just enjoyed watching their madness. :)

Your plan looks great and you certainly are strong!

Happy Tuesday!

Thanks SR800. If I can get my boss to sign off I will post some back photos. I work for an agency that has confidentaility rules for posting photos on the internet, no face shots, etc. We travel occassionaly for work overseas, and our company insists on this for security. Hi BigTank your pic reminds me of those huge guys you see on the World's Strongest Man competitions. Your screen name is very apt!

Many years ago I got some great training advice from a guy who was a British powerlifting champ. What a nice guy he was - you're all softies right? ;) Watching him train was just something else :D

Your workouts look intense, you must get a huge buzz from them in an 'I just tortured myself and I love it' kind of way, to which I can relate.

My Dad had the biggest calves and forearms, when we were kids we thought he might be Popeye! He was the strongest man I have ever known. Worked for the railroad his whole adult life, used to lift drawbars or knuckles, whatever they were. Like 250 pounds of knarly metal. Strong man. Then got Alzheimers and passed away 3 years ago. Damn I miss him.

My dad passed away a few years ago too at 66 years of age. Hurt like crazy. Unexpected and died WAY to soon of a massive heart attack.

She must be to put up with the mask!!

I always thought my Dad would be there forever. When he passed it was the weirdest thing, I still picked up the phone to call him, even though the last year or so he had no clue who I was. He knew who my Mom was, but not me or my brothers and sister. Hope I never get like that.

We lose what we love, we don't have to understand it, it just is.

Yup, lost my dad about 7 years ago at the age of 70. I still get the urge to call him when a question pops up in my head that I know he'd know the answer to.

I get all nostalgic when I listen to the '70s channel on Sirius. It reminds me of all the fun family times we had. Just heard a Boz Scaggs song yesterday that flashed me back to 1977, driving my old '65 Newport with its AM radio, going to a Sunday family picnic. Sniff, sigh... well, it's good to have things like that to remember.

We used to do summer trips in a big old Buick Roadmaster station wagon. Us kids in the back, Mom and Dad up front. If I see an old station wagon now, it tears me up. Man I miss those days gone by. My Dad was a big reason I think that I grew up to be the man I am.

Breakfast Saturday was bacon, sausage, eggs, waffles, hash browns, fruit, cereal and lots of coffee. Lots of bacon, sausage, eggs, waffles, and hash browns. Lunch didn't happen since we ate breakfast late. Dinner was a 12oz filet mignon, lobster tail, caesar salad and cheesecake. I had a diet soda after the fight and Sunday was an MRP with added protein for breakfast and lunch, dinner at home was grilled chicken and salad. Back on track today.

Posted this in my journal also,

I am considering changing my workout plan from what I was going to do. I realize that I have been training at the same intensity/volume as I was prior to my change up and am looking to have more recovery time. I am thinking of going to a Mon-Wed-Fri split, doing chest/shoulders/triceps Monday, back/biceps/forearms Wednesday and Legs and abs Friday. Anybody have anything to add I would appreciate hearing it. Haven't done a 3 day a week routine in probably 5 years so I could use some input.

Thanks!!

Hey BigTank your Saturday menu was the stuff of dreams ;)

Are you still thinking of changing your routine? I love 3-way splits as I find I seem to need a bit longer to recover now than a few years ago. Its not ageing, oh no, its .... errrr .... something else

I guess if you feel its time for a change then you should do it. I've recently returned to a 3-way split and am loving it. I do Back/Shoulders on Mon, Chest/Bi's on Weds and Legs/Tri's on Fri. (I throw ab work in a couple of times a week when it feels right.)

There's lots of different ways you can split things up. Some people try not to work a significant 'assist' muscle before a major one, or on the same day. So some wouldn't do Back & Bi's together, some wouldn't do Bi's on Mon then Back on Weds etc etc. But really, as with everything else, you gotta go with what feels right and what works for you :)

Have a good weekend :)

Hey everybody!!

Just got back in town from a business trip, it sucked. The hotel had a crappy gym, crappy restaurant, the nearest gym was 10 miles away, my boss was sick, I feel like I am getting it too, and my wifes birthday is tomorrow. Hope you all are doing great!! :)

Going to a 3 day split Monday, talk to ya all soon!!

I feel like a dummy some time. I know that the worst thing to do is over analyze, paralysis by analysis it's called. I thought that I wanted more time for recovery, but I really am just looking for a change from what I have done for so long. I have decided that my number one goal right now is hypertrophy, so tomorrow morning I will begin my quest for my 15, 10 and 5 rep maxes and do a 8 week cycle of HST. I will establish my maxes and then take 9 days out of the gym to strategic decondition, and then back for 8 weeks of muscle gain. I probably have some of you thinking "here we go again", but I need something to keep going to the gym fresh. Thanks for reading!

Paralysis by analysis ....... I have qualifications in that ..... well, I should have because I've turned it into an artform

Now you have a new plan I'm sure it'll breathe new life into you and your workouts :)

BigTank: Can you explain "deconditioning"? I think I've been doing that since 1980! :D

Seriously, what does that involve?
