1. Members throwing/chucking heavy dumbells after completing a set. Althought the gym floor is covered with rubber mats, I feel chucking the weights is very dangerous for other people because the weights might crash on their feet or something like that. What a bunch of inconsiderate monkeys, I remember one of the gym instructors politely told this jackass to put down the weights with cautious, and he got offended and told her that he did not need to waste his effort since he has completed his set. What an ass!
ive had a 50 pound dumbbell tossed on my foot.. no damage but still completely unnecessary.

People who pull weights off of the barbell you are using between sets OR even sometime IN THE MIDDLE OF YOUR SET. Seriously what...
So I was doing Cleans with my trainer to ensure that I having good form. Unfortunately going heavy, my form fell apart a little in the middle of my set. So while he was explaining me what I need to fix, this other guy came up to the bar and started pulling the weight OFF. Even when I caught him in the act, he just smirked and ran off with it.

I wanted to smack these two guys around today because of something similar to that. I was supersetting squats and leg curls with a dumbell on a decline bench and these two guys who were barely working out (mostly watching what I was doing and chatting on the phone) decided that while i turned my back they would try to jump on the rack I was obviously using.
I might get negged for this but I was a complete d*ck, they had it coming and I'll do it everytime.

in all honesty, I have people who may be trying to contact me who are more important than 5 minutes in the gym I understand the frustration of people with no etique that are holding up machines, I certainly don't sit on a bench or on a machine. and talk I walk away as to try to remain as private as possible.
If you watch the most recent Mike Pulcinella documentary, on Rodney Roller's quest to become an IFBB pro, you'll notice that his wife and kids take priority as they should, we have to be aware that although the time we spend in the gym is important to alot of us, unless your a pro bodybuilder, there most likely are and should be more important things in our lives than the time spent at the gym, justifying the use of a Cell Phone While at the Gym.

Just commenting on your first part, if you bring your phone and want to listen to your music on it thats fine. Its when your texting/checking facebook when its a problem.
As for the second part, thats just a whole different thing, one in which if you can't go an hour with out people being able to get a hold of you, then you got problems. Not hating on you thats just the way our society is going and I find it sick.

With this I agree with you, I'm not much of a "Texter" anyway, nor do I even have Internet capabilities on my phone anyway.
I just have it on in the case my Navy Recruiter might have something he needs to contact me about.
and I completely agree with you what society has done with Social Networking is out of hand.
So I think we're on an agreeance with the whole Cellphone issue.

you might be amazed to learn this, but we got along fine without cell phones for a long times. Last time I checked, most gyms have land line phones...and we used to have these things called pay phones (pick up the receiver, drop in a quarter, dial a number). Emergencies are nothing new, we've always had them...and, shockingly enough, people managed to deal with them WITHOUT cell phones.

Today I saw a guy shadow-boxing, MMA-style (striking, shooting, muay thai knees from the clinch, the works) ... smack dab between a bunch of the machines. Not even in front of a mirror or anything.
I've seen this more than once - and unless you're in an MMA gym - that stuff really makes you look like a tool.
OMG, I can't believe this boxing is running rampant in gyms everywhere. After I lift I jog around the track for about 15 minutes where the machines and some free weights are. There's this guy that I like to call "the grunter" that basically does the same workout every day, grunting and groaning and red in the face on the cable machines like his arms are going to rip off. He runs around from machine to machine in a maniacal frenzy. He wears the same Kenny Chesney cut off t-shirt every day. Apparently after he's done injuring every muscle and bone in his body, he likes to walk around the track with 7 pound dumbbells, fist pumping in the air. He always stops in this one corner and does that shadow-boxing, jabbing, whatever it is you want to call it in front of the windows. I still haven't figured out what exactly it is. But whatever it is, it's not working.
I started going to this gym 5 or 6 months ago, and he looks exactly the same as he did the first time I saw him. Strangely enough, when I used to use the free weights in that area, he would give me dirty looks from across the room, like you stupid ***k I can see you in the mirror. But now since I've been going there for a few months, the dirty looks have subsided and sometimes I get a good morning. What a tool. Like a trainwreck, you can't look away. This is the reason why I don't use the free weights upstairs anymore. It breaks my concentration.
My other pet peeve - guys who leave 3 or 4 45 plates on the smith at 9PM because they're too lazy to take them off before they leave and then I get there at 5AM and struggle to remove them all. That in itself is a workout for me.

You're exactly the reason I take the time to remove every single plate I use when I'm done. Which can truly suck, but if I put it on then I should be the one to remove it. I hate cleaning up after myself on leg days.

Those numbskulls that pull a free bench to the squat area and using the squat rack for bench presses.
Partials for strength increase on bench is great to do in the squat rack. im sorry. Gonnnna have to disagree here.

Going to have to completely disagree with this one. I can understanding being annoyed with people chucking 40, 50, or 60 lb dumbells, but if im throwing up 120's on the bench. Im dropping them bitches. Why am i going to risk hurting my back resting those things down nicely. The floors are padded, and im very aware where other people are around me. You can still throw down weights responsibly.
IMO, you're going to find a mixture of different types of training in a public gym. My best advice, is to throw on some headphones and ignore the small things, like screamers. weight throwers or people using the squat rack for a bench exercise. As long as they are working, who gives a fk.
But, being annoyed by the little fat kids going to the gym, chatting their ass off, or simply taking 10 minute rests and not allowing others to use the machines is what annoys me. Your phone shouldnt be anywhere near the gym period. If your texting during your workout, or facebooking. Im sorry, but you aint focused. You shouldnt be there.

I disagree a slight bit on the focused part. I am completely focused when i hit my sets. But I do in between do a text or tweet occasionally. Mostly to plan something after my workout. I dont however sit there and write essays on my phone or go facebookin'. But esp when Im hitting heavy weights and take my quick breather its all in one motion.
The rest of what you said is annoying.
At my local gym, I prefer to go late. And they have this group of about 6 people from the local UTI school. They all wait till each of them arrive, then go around as a group, a few are slightly ripped, the rest are out of shape, and just chat it up and talk in an hour use about 3 different areas. I wouldnt really have a problem so much with that, as i could just use any other machine/free weight/bench... but the gym is small and they spread themselves out and just use it just like they were at home kickin back. Its quite annoying. I keep the headphones on and try to ignore them but sometimes you go to grab some loose weights, or some dumbbells and bam they are all up in the way.
Annoys me.

I never thought of it that way ... Maybe I'll do that next time I'm in the power rack and there are 74 groups of 15 year olds waiting to do their sets on the flat bench, texting and talking to each other for an hour.
I just kept away from doing it because there are usually a lot of guys in the DB section of the gym, which is where all of the rolling benches are. Guess it wouldn't make a bit difference if I used one for 5 minutes to do my warm ups and work sets.

The guys chez nous are pretty responsible. Also, when someone's doing their presses or whatever with 80+lbs, everyone steers clear unless they have a spotter. We're pretty respectful in that sense.
Oh, and when they DO drop? They actually take a minute to move the DBs with their feet so that they're out of the way, which is a nice touch.

True that. I took my phone ONCE because I was waiting on a text. I've been going for 19 weeks now, and my phone goes on silent, in the locker.
Then again, it's an HTC Touch Poop, so I don't care where it goes, haha!

I hate hate hate when people do dumbbell curls right in front of the dumbbell sets and you can't get to the dumbbells you want. Like, you can step back 10 feet to do 20 lb curls, its' not that difficult. I can understand when people grab 100's and do shrugs because they are hard to carry, but seriously, for curls? WTF?
Thats what I hate. I use the 100lbs for shrugs and its usually some smaller guy doing 20lb curls standing right in front of those weights.. why? I dont know :(

There are multiple things that annoy me while I'm working out at the rec. (sorry if some of these are repeats)
1. People who do not know how to re-rack the weight properly. At the rec that I go to the weight racks have six total places to put the weight. On the bottom row goes 45lb plates and next to that are the 35lb plates. Next tier up are the 25lb plats and the 10lb plates. Next row up are the 5lb plates and 2.5lb plates. I simply cannot stand it when people put the plates out of order. It is simple people. I just hate it when I have to remove a 45lb plate in order to get to a 10lb plate. Simply annoying.
2. I cannot stand to see the tiny 125lb guys in the rec trying to lift twice their bodyweight. Their form is terrible and they are only going to hurt themselves. People need to learn that weightlifting is not about showing off how much they can lift. Its about bettering oneself and making gains.
3. Cell phones in general. I always turn mine off and put it in my locker. The rec is a place to workout not talk on ones phone.
4. People that walk away from a machine for like 10 minutes and return to only kick the person off of it and tell them that they are not done with it. Now I'm not a speed lifter or anything like that, but I don't walk away from the machine that I'm using for extend periods of time.

1. Most of the personal trainers at my gym. They are all out of shape and talk **** in a group all day, and rarely have clients.
2. People who use the squat rack for curls (half of the guys at my gym).
3. Guys who take 45 minutes to knock out 3 sets on the bench press. There are only 3 benches at my gym, and they are always taken anyway.
4. For some reason nobody racks any dumbell over 100 lbs at my gym. So every dumbell from 100-140 lbs is lying around, and I usually have to crawl under the rack to get them.
5. This 6'2'', 170 pound fool who tries to give everyone in the gym advice. He told me the other day that I was benching too low (down to the chest). He does 225 lb partials for his max, which stop 8 inches from his chest and his feet are in the air when he benches. He also screams on every rep, and bumps 50 cent on this ridiculous pair of gigantic DRE beat headphones that you can hear from across the gym. This kid recommended I stop benching full range of motion, and that I drink some purple **** called size on while I work out like he does.
These are some of my pet peeves at my particular gym.

I say that kinda stuff, but I also have 18 inch arms, so it might not be as situationally comical.
(IDK how to multi-quote):
Phones: I don't do it, but a bit of texting or one call wouldn't be workout-shattering.
****ers standing in front of the DBs to flex their little guns: I run into these guys intentionally. I they can't take 2-3 steps away from the rack, it's obvious to me that they need to accept the possible consequences that come along with that. I'm just there to make the sure the consequences happen. Only thing worse than that is,
Kids sitting on **** I want to use: Usually just flex my lats a bit and go ask them how many sets they have left, being as intimidating as possible. Bigger than 90%+ of the kids at my university gym, so it tends to get pretty good results.
Cliffs:
I hate non-bodybuilders.

i dunno, i do tae kwon do when the dance room is empty for cardio. but i actually know what i'm doing. i don't have the space in my apartment to do 360 spinning hook kicks. and elliptical gets old sometimes. the only gym that has sparring equipment is 30 minutes away. sooo yeah >_>

mmk, i weigh 140 or so, am tiny. and lift close to 2x my weight with perfect form.
fact: in order to gain mass, you have to increase intensity and lower reps.
us tiny ones can't really expect to gain anything if we don't increase to heavy weights. how can you know your maxout without testing yourself?

this is more of a gripe about my gym.
They needed to move some things for some suspension training which takes up the weight room (rage)
I normally did my deadlifts in between squat and power racks, as to not take up any racks.
Now they moved these two so close together that I can't even fit the bar in between them, so now I either need to do them in front of the squat rack, or in the power rack. So now I'm taking up the power rack doing deadlifts, which I don't feel horrible about, because not many people do deads at my gym, but still.
PS we could use another squat rack honestly.

I'm not trying to say that light weight people cannot lift twice their bodyweight. I'm sure that you have been lifting for quite some time and have the proper form down and have that capability. However, the people that I am referring to are the people that have no idea what they are doing and try to lift clearly too much weight and almost hurt themselves. I respect those people for being in the rec and trying to better themselves, but it bugs me when they are only trying to show off. (you know, the people that only show up to the rec once a week and only do a couple of sets of bench and go home) I understand that increasing weight and lowering reps is the way to gain mass. I do that myself. I'm not trying to dis the newbies that are at the rec or anything like that either. They just need to better understand their boundaries. I also did not mean to dis you as well. Hi everyone, just want to share some of my dislikes of the current gym I am going for my workouts. I'm actually quite tempted to mention the name and the location of the gym but opted to hide this information first. I will probably disclose the name if I can't bear with the members anymore.
I will list down a few things I find them EXTREMELY annoying and irritating. Please see below:
2. Not putting weights back to its respective racks!!!!!! This really pisses me off a lot. Whenever I step into the free weight section, I see dumbells lyinig around on the floor and the racks are empty. This is really selfish of them. They want to save their strengths for subsequent sets; hence, choose to neglect the weights they have used and leave them there so the guys around him will trip and fall horribly!!!!! I also hate hyprocrites who claim that they hate people who don't put their weights back and even claim they are responsible members who put weights back after using them. A few days ago, I saw the same MOFOs who left the weights on the squating rack and never came back!!!! Ahhhhhhh I'm so mad while writing this now.
3. Screamers. I just can't avoid/ignore them. Groaning is acceptable but screaming your lungs out??? I think if they really want to show their masculinity by shouting out loud? Please do that at a karaoke joint.
4. Gym instructors who only talk to the pretty ones. I notice this and it personally disgusts me the most!!!! I always see guy instructors chatting up with chicks on the treadmill, while ignoring a poor lady who obviously needed some guidance from "qualified" gym instructors. Some of them even abuse their authority during personal training sessions such as putting their palm on the lady's buttocks "assisting" her in her stretch. Seriously, I was in the States for 5 years and I know they can be sued for sexual harrassment. But then again! The women in my country are so dumb and naive they seem to like the attention they are getting from the instructors
5. TAKING 10 MINUTES REST PERIOD. Sorry for the caps but I'm actually getting quite pissed as I am writing this. :P I am not condemning people who like to socialize at a gym. When you rack up weights on the smith machine and decide to have a quick drink at the cooler I am fine with that. But doing a quick warm up set of 10-12 and then chatting up with some so called buddies for like 10 minutes enrages me!!!!!!! I don't mind if they do that during non-peak hours but doing that during peak hours deserve to soak themselves in acid!
There are still so much more and I should stop here. Must go back to work before my manager finds out I have been doing nothing but writing hate mails. :D
Please share your views as well. Looking forward to your feedback.
Take care.
There are definitely some special exceptions in situations listed above, but yeah, I notice these things too, I actually put a posting on my page about it :)

What bout those that gets in between you and the mirror? It gets really annoying sometimes if you're in between reps and mustering up enough energy for the next one and lo and behold, an idiot gets in between you and the mirror and starts texting on his mobile phone.
Idiots that bring a towel like 5x5inches across. (trust me, I've seen more than one).
People that hog machines and rest like 5minutes in between sets. I've actually seen one goon that did like 12 reps on a bench, then starts texting someone on his mobile phone for like 10 minutes, and then carrying on his workout. I'm like *doh*?
Those numbskulls that pull a free bench to the squat area and using the squat rack for bench presses.
If you don't have a spotter it is a lot more safer to do your reps at the squat rack.

However, the people that I am referring to are the people that have no idea what they are doing and try to lift clearly too much weight and almost hurt themselves. I respect those people for being in the rec and trying to better themselves, but it bugs me when they are only trying to show off. (you know, the people that only show up to the rec once a week and only do a couple of sets of bench and go home)
..ah, my bad. i misread it :/

When I used to train late at night this guy would come in and like clockwork each and every time he got done with a set he would scream and throw a barrage of kicks and punches like we was in a fight for his life. It never got old and I laughed openly every single time I saw it....

A funny story first...
I worked at a gym years ago and it was a snowy Saturday afternoon, late after xmas break. There was one dude in the gym. I was putting plates up, cleaning, just wasting time and I heard this "help...help" coming from the lower floor. I kind of blew it off thinking I was hearing things outside. As I started back to the counter, it got louder, so I ran back down stairs to find this dude stuck under the bench press, with the bar on his chest....he was like, "man!...I thought I was gonna suffocate!" No crap...lol
Pet peave... Leaving weights racked on a machine, looking around to see if anyone is watching and walking away with several plates on the equipment. Usually, I'll do the right thing and ask the person if he is still using it...making a point to walk across the room and ask. If they are coming back to it, no problem. Sometimes...sometimes, that prompts the person into putting the plates up. Not always. I don't mind doing it, but when a lady or someone walks up to it and stares like, "how to I take off 8 plates" it makes me mad.
Rack the weights after you are done. Common sense and for the next person to use it.

So today I'm using the Cybex Eagle weighted row machine as part of my lifting routine. I'm about to start my 2nd set when I notice this guy standing right behind me, about 2 feet away, practically breathing down my neck. I turn around, and he's just staring at me. I was so shocked, I didn't know what to say, so I just got back to my sets. I couldn't believe that he was so eager to get on the machine that he couldn't just back off and let me concentrate. Seriously!

Your phone shouldnt be anywhere near the gym period. If your texting during your workout, or facebooking. Im sorry, but you aint focused. You shouldnt be there.
I agree with the texting and facebook but do realise that sometimes people are using their smartphone to track workouts, I'm one of them. I found a simple app that I can record my progress on and that counts down the time inbetween sets. Heaps easier than carrying around a notepad, pen and watching the clock. It actually makes your workouts more efficient because you don't accidently over rest.

I always shrug in the squat rack as it's the only place that has adjustable bar supports. But that's not as bad as using the squat rack for pullups, while those can be done much easier (squat rack pullup bars are really high up and require a ladder) either at the pulley or dip station, no excuse to take up the squat rack. But there's always a goof setting up the ladder and hogging it for 15 minutes.
The best squat rack use I've seen so far:
- crunches, many many endless crunches, it was a team actually, his buddy was mirroring him next to the squat rack,
- one arm empty barbell curls,
- single leg lunges on the rubber half-ball thingy, followed by empty bar squats on the same ball,
I'm curious what other ingenious use of the squat rack will people come up with.

1.) Leaving plates on machines or bars- your at the gym WTF!? simply leave it how you found it and strip the machines or bars.
2.) that Walk in your mirror space your zoning in on it while lifting.
3.) DONT use the squat rack OR Bench for curling or other stupid workouts its not necessary when the gym has bars and racks conveniently for that. (3 kids were curling like 55 lbs with the worst form ever on a bench rack while also using the other bench rack for idk wtf they were doing)

So there's this bloke who goes to my gym, I see him train maybe once every couple weeks or so. He is ridiculously distracting cause i can't stop laughing! He comes up with these ridiculous excercises thinking he's some pro and that doing something no one else does is gonna get him big. I can't even describe some of the nonsense routines he does and it's funny cause he gets so pumped up for it too. Before a set he starts slapping himself in the face and ****, then proceeds to fling around a bunch of weights in some eradic fashion.
Needless to say, I haven't noticed any progress with him in over a year when i noticed him first.

reading these stories I wonder where the hell you guys workout. LOL
The only thing I see that's somewhat silly is the personal trainers that use the weird balance balls while having people use pvc pipe on their backs with weights tied to them on each end. I guess it's to "strengthen the core" but it looks like it's for hurting yourself.

people that misplace the weights in the wrong place for example people that put the 100s in the 25s.
people that throw the weights on the ground when the gym is crowded as all hell already or when people are next to them working out. if you're going to hurt somebody doing that ****, please make it be you and not me. thank you.
people that hog the squat rack, bench press, weights or whatever doing more than 4 sets. don't care if you're doing a light set or whatever, dude. if you're doing 8 or 9 sets of the same exercise @ a public gym, then you're doing it all wrong. buy your own equipment.
people that don't put back the weights of whatever they use after they finish with them.
people that see somebody struggling with a weight on the bench press or squat rack pushing themselves and stand around as if the person doesn't need help. i seen a dude almost hurt himself lifting the weight, he somehow managed to get it back up and three dudes were just standing there right around him like nothing was happening. then they had the nerve to come around and ask him if he was alright after he damn near killed himself. ****ing idiots.

5. Loungers....old guys sitting around on machines talking politics. There's a place for that fellas, it's called the bar

As a paying member of that gym you have every right to let them people know in a respectable way that hey! if you are gonna workout next to me please do not drop or throw those dumbells around near me. Also, if it becomes an issue, you should go straight to the people that are running that gym to inform them of the issue and bring up the safety issue! :).

Recording my workout numbers on my phone is more of a hassle. The only thing I do that for is just typing in what I wanted to do (just a quick look), then write down what I in a small spiral notebook. I sometimes just use my phone to listen to music. I put it in music mode (so that no calls/texts get in or out).
A major pet peeve for me is seeing the same group of people crowded around a single machine yakking it up every time I go work out. This isn't a damn social club!
I always bring either my mp3 player or my cell phone. It seems that the music channel that plays at my gym keeps playing that one song with the rapping dwarf. Very annoying to listen to that and quite distracting.

2. Here are a few that get on my nerves:
1. Grunting- we all do it but you do not want to be "that" guy who has to do it on every single rep, for every single set for every lift you do. Gets pretty annoying.
2. "That guy" who lifts with there ipod to the max, you go to ask them if they are done and they dont even realize there talking to you.
3. Circut training is good when there is no one in the gym, but dont be "That" guy who thinks he has to have 8 machines to himself. We all pay memberships and have rights.
4. "That" guy who asks you to jump in on a set. There is plenty of equipment to do while i am doing my sets, you don't have to jump in on my set. On cable biceps curls, of course he had to x2 my weight and do 1 rep. Comeon man really?

1. When people don't put their plates back...so you wait 10 minutes to see if anyone goes to the machine.
2. This one guy (HUGE guy) was doing circuits (I think) and I didn't see anyone on the lat pull down so I go and put in a set after readjusting things and I'm resting before my second set and he comes up and is all like "Can I get in a set?" so I get up and look and to my surprise there are THREE other cable available. Just a total prick and was obviously just taking advantage of his size.
3. There's this one personal trainer who always looks like he's giving me the evil eye lol
LOL at 1. I have to agree hard with that. I've just started getting machines if people aren't right there, waiting gets annoying.
3. Same at my gym except it's a woman.
5. "That" guy who has to act like hes a boxer inbetween lifts throwin punches etc.
1. Grunting is ok when needed but I don't like the people that grunt just to be heard.
3. strong agree
5. I would bust out laughing if I saw that.
Guys that just go to the weight room to watch other people lift. Creepy, they might throw in a couple of bicep curls(bad form) and leave.

It has always bothered me when I see women that are lifting ultra-light weights for a ton of reps. I don't know why, and who am I to judge, but....
Also, I very much dislike how many "bodybuilders" believe in conventional "wisdom" without ever questioning, reading, or researching anything they are told. And how "women should train differently than men"...
And yes, bad form always makes me laugh. :)
Yeah, they aren't going to get any results that way.

I will list down a few things I find them EXTREMELY annoying and irritating. Please see below:
1. Members throwing/chucking heavy dumbells after completing a set.
2. Not putting weights back to its respective racks!!!!!!
3. Screamers. I just can't avoid/ignore them. Groaning is acceptable but screaming your lungs out???
4. Gym instructors who only talk to the pretty ones.
1. totally agree. if you can't lift the weight without throwing back to earth like a dumb ass... dont lift it!
2. i actually dont mind gettin a little extra in when somebody leaves crap on. ppl are messy. and they wont change anyways so why worry, but an understandable annoyance (why i pick up after myself!)
3. kinda guilty of this one.. lol. i give myself credit tho for keeping it to a dull grunt while inside an actual gym. save the louder action for other strenuous activity ;)
4. gym instructors who try to pick up women at work are just douches.. bottom line.. i dont even like hittin on girls in the gym, go to a bar to get some tang, geez. (itll prolly be easier there anyways lol)
5. THIS IS THE WHOLE REASON I EVEN POSTED ON THIS FORUM.!!!!!
Im a member at the Little Rock Athletic Club mostly because i'm on my parents account still (we'll see how long it takes them to notice lol)
This place has literally the best equipment and amenities in Arkansas...However, this gym is more of a country club/racquet club for the late 40's tennis-playin house wife and the ppl that are just TOO OLD to be in a gym
... what is TOO OLD? You ask? When you have to have a care taker bring you to the gym, bc you legally cannot drive, lifting weights might be beyond you..
.. When I worked there (weight floor staff, worked front desk in highschool), I LITERALLY CARRIED A 95 YEAR OLD MAN (LIKE A BABY) OUT TO HIS CAR BC HE GOT TIRED SITTING IN THE SUN BY THE POOL
Now I didn't mind helping the old fella out at all... truthfully it was my job to help the members and i was happy to help.. what REALLY kills me is the old folks, who have to notice I'm on a different game plan than they are, TAKE BREAKS & CONVERSATE ON THE MACHINES. Like the seat on the preacher curl bench is a resting bench?????!!??!? I'll be doing a superset with 2 exercises when some old fart takes my bench, and literally sits, stretches, yawns, farts, coughs, sneezes, checks his blood pressure, then lifts a 2.5lb db twice, then proceeds to sit there another 10 minutes and talk to his old buddies about bowel movements or something...this drives me insane, and im a pretty nice guy in general (usually dont even speak at the gym, just headphones in and go)---- and they CRAZIEST part is when I ask them if they are finished, or can move while I actually do something, they look at me like I'm absolutely crazy. :%
I feel much better now. Thanks for giving me a place to let out my fury :)
PS i still love old people. just not ones that use my workout benches as a spot to potentially expire :(

There's a guy at my gym who does that. I don't know why, but he just infuriates me. I just want to pummel him. It's just irritating. Especially when he does it in front of the weights I'm trying to get to.

Wow....this thread is long....thought I would add mine....yesterday I was doing abs as part of my routine. I had already worked upper, and now I wanted to do lower by doing hanging knee and leg raises as well as hanging obliques. There is this older guy who does several sets and hogs the thing. By the time I wanted to use the harnesses, he must have been on his 4th or 5th set, so I thought surely he was almost done. Nope....yet another set! So I politely asked him if he was just about done and he said he could work me in. The only problem is that he uses this heavy adjustable bench for supporting his butt and I use a flat bench just to stand on. He said he had about 3 more sets to go! This is not the only time he has hogged something. He also drinks all our free coffee when the sign says clearly to limit to 2 cups so that others might be able to enjoy some!
Other than that, something that amuses me....three words: Invisible Lat Syndrome! I see guys walking around with their arms out as if they have huge lats, and I look and look and cannot see where they possibly are, LOL!

"Those numbskulls that pull a free bench to the squat area and using the squat rack for bench presses.[/QUOTE]"
I Don't agree with this one, I am at a gym that only has one olympic bench press and I personally wont use a Smith Machine. So if the Bench is being used I myself have no problem bringing a flat or decline bench over to the squat platform and put my sets in. As long as the person is efficient and doesn't hold the station for an extended time there shouldnt be a problem. I hit the weights heavy with limited rest between sets, and using the platform has not led to a problem for me to this day.
My main issue when it comes to people in the gym is that people need to have respect for those who also have the same privledge of using the gym. Don't make someone else pick up your mess and don't hold up a station when it could be used in a timely manner. Just switch in turns on sets if you have to. It's not rocket science.

I'll admit to doing the dumbbell chucking in the past, however, it's never intentional. Sometimes you put all you're remaining energy into that last rep and you don't have anything left to sit back up and set the weights down gently.

There is a guy at my gym (who wears a red bb.com shirt every day) who gets on the cables and uses so much weight he turns the same crimson as his shirt and strains so hard and SLOWLY does maybe 2 reps. He literally is going to burst blood vessels or give himself an aneurysm. This isn't limited to cables either...its every machine, every weight...he just gets BEAT red and I swear he's going to die or soil himself.

I witnessed the worst and most disgusting displays of bad gym etiquette I've ever seen yesterday. A guy was sprinting on the treadmill and had been doing so long enough to be soaked in sweat. Both side of the console had streams of sweat running down them and literally dripping off onto the treadmill itself. The base of the machine was covered in sweat. I am not making this up. The guy had no gym towel and, of course, no one at 24 Hour Fitness was bothering to walk around and make sure anyone was following the POSTED rules, as usual. Horrible. I promise to all my gym-mates that I will NOT raise my kids to be so lacking in common sense and decency.

Some people have different pigments in their skin so they get red really easily. It happens to me, I'm always really red after every set because I'm also giving it my all. Maybe if you worked as hard as him you'd show some real results? Ignorant idiot.

Just nosey people that try and give advice when it is not needed. For example...I was shrugging, and some 6'0 140lb kid came over to me and said "You know if you bend over more you will be working out your back". To which I replied... "Yes, I saw you doing BB rows earlier, and yes that targets your back. I am doing shrugs though, which is a trap exercise". He looked at me, then turned around.

Yes, the same applies for the people who wear BSN's The League tshirts. They buy their Cell Mass or Syntha 6 and immediately cut the sleeves out of their shirts and come in and dont train very hard, then when someone looks at them they say they are either recovering from an injury, havent worked out in a few months, or are on a low carb day. Not that the person looking at them was even going to say anything about the weight they are lifting.

Compound exercises are what you need to build up your overall strength. That's like refusing to to close grip cable rows in a back workout because it might work your biceps while you are doing it. You need the balance of compound exercises to go with your isolation exercises. I do agree however that tricep kickbacks are a great isolation move for when your towards the end of the workout and your tri's are just about beat. Best of luck on the tri's

Yes, the close grip press will target the inner pectoral as well. I recommend switching it up from workout to workout by doing a barbell close grip press one workout and then for the next tri workout, switch it up with the dumbbell close grip press. With the dumbbells position them so that your palms are facing each other and begin your set. The different grips will help strengthen your stabilizing muscles while targeting multiple portions of the tricep as well as the inner pectoral.

At my gym now there is a rule put in place for - apparently - hygienic reasons and that is that you are not allowed to train in singlets. Whether you agree whether or not a t-shirt is more hygienic than a singlet is really besides the point, the rule is clear, you are not allowed to train in singlet.
So, what do some do? They go into the gym wearing sweaters, and while inside take it off and work out in a singlet.. ffs ..

Was at the gym getting in a back workout the other day before I went on my shift. I was using the pull-up bar between the cable stacks you see in many gyms. I noticed that this guy and a younger guy were standing to the side of me so I asked if they want to jump in and we can switch in and out for the sets we are going to do. They each do their sets and proceed to stand and talk under the bar, as I motion that I am ready to jump on and do my last set for that exercise.
The guy says to me "Oh, I'll let you do your burnout set" as if I was getting in the way. Bonehead. (putting it nicely)
I got my set in using the frustration to get an extra push and moved on to the next exercise.
THANK YOU FOR GIVING ME PERMISSION TO FINISH WHAT I STARTED!
Now that I think about it, maybe I should have apologized to him for being in the gym to begin with, after all I was taking up his precious space and oxygen. My fault on that one.

I haven't really noticed anyone worth posting on here until the other day.
I was at my gym doing my squats in the rack. The squat rack is right in the corner and the smith machine is right next to it. This guy with headphones singing at the top of his lungs, walking around talking to himself in a real conversation, grunting annoyingly loud(I know those 135 shoulder shrugs on the smith machine are hard but c'mon son)

It doesnt bother me if others do this. I do it but not very loudly no one at the gym even cares. Now if you are pretty much yelling then everyone looks. The really week guys on the leg press grunting as loud as they can with 1-45lb plate on each side. lol so funny.

The other day this guy was using the power rack to bench with the safety bars 6 inches off his chest. He pushed it up about 3inchs and let it slam on the safety bars over and over. At the same time he was using the incline bench I wanted to use. So go to standing cable flys. Same guy comes beside me and starts throwing a ball over a piece of equipment at the wall. The ball bounced where these lady's were stretching. Then continues to play wall ball almost hitting me. I ignore the john cena look alike and move on. Then I go to the free weights and guess who shows up? Cena grabs two benches and does some kinda of pushups so I have no bench I had to leave at that point

yea i dont mind when people use equipment, or even take it while im at the drinking fountain (snooze u lose), but when they either stand in the way of the dumbbells i want (working out / not working out) and act like they dont see me there, or they just keep them while they chat it up and prevent me from getting my workout done, it really bothers me...
u kno if they steal it the least they could do is be quick about it and get their stuff done so i can quick do a set of something else and get back on track...
and my favorite is when tiny guys, or even fat guys that dont have muscle, act like they're huge. maybe its just me, but it really bothers me when they act like they're big throwing weights around with all their might, yet they have no form.

Maybe I'm in the wrong here, I haven't exactly been hitting the gym all my life, so I don't know proper etiquette, but:
I hate when people want to rotate in between a machine and a bench, and "claim" the bench by leaving their weights or water bottle. If the gym isn't busy, not that big a deal, but when it's full and you're trying to find a bench, it's a pain.

When people go between like 7 different machines and when you try to use one they get all huffy. Or when they decide to leave their weights on the bp bars. Takes me and some other lifter there just to get that stuff off, not very fair. Or when they say they'll spot you and then walk the hell off into god knows where. DUDE, YOU SAID YOU'D SPOT ME!!!!

And then he would like stand up and flex his muscles and do poses and look at himself in the mirror.

I hate it when
1) When (not just but mainly) teenagers stand next to the DB rack talking about how big they look, and they have a skinny 6-pack (lifting up there top to show off) on there phones and doing the exercise wrong while taking up like 2 benches between them, and spending 15 mins, you get some bad sort at my gym.
2) Females that all the do is cardio to lsoe weight and end up looking like sticks, then complain about it.
3) the fat naked people getting chagned in the changing room, that stay naked for like 10 mins right next to you just bending over and chatting with there naked mates
4) using the mirror in the gym not the changing room to check themselves out.
I've got more but i dont want to punch the wall in anger.

I admit I haven't read through all 40 pages to see if there's been some resolution to this point, but I have to disagree with the dumbbell chuckers. Not only is it really irritating to those around you, it damages the equipment. They may be iron, but they're still deformable. Dropping dumbbells will bend the handles over time, which makes them noticeably awkward to use for certain movements (mostly presses). More importantly, it loosens the ends (especially if they're the bolted type). Try holding a 100 lb DB directly over your face to start a set of pullovers and feeling a ton of movement between the ends and the handle. Tell me that's not disconcerting and dangerous.
In the end, I don't agree that there's any reason to toss the dumbbells upon completing your set. Even when doing heavy DB bench to failure, I've never been unable to bring the weights back into my body and sit up with them. Tossing them is just lazy and inconsiderate.
Also, count me among those who get furious when people can't bring themselves to put things back where they belong.

OMG this one pissed me off. I wanted an adjustabe bench to do incline dumbell presses. But a group of 3 guys doing the same exercise took all 3 adjustable benches in the whole gym. All 3 of them with benches next to each other doing the exercise at different times. THey would just sit at the bench while one of them did their shoulder presses and the next guy would do his while the other 2 sit. It was POINTLESS.

I'm sure something like this has been mentioned already, but I'll put a guy on blast here. At the main gym I go to (the same as in my profile), there's this one fool who feels the need to start a conversation with everyone. He's probably been there longer than me, but I feel like I get more work in than he does, but that's not the problem.
This jerk will take up a piece of equipment- especially something there's only one of- and lag on finshing his sets, because he's busy BSing with the guy next to him. He knows people are waiting to use that piece of equipment but he'll just stand there, lollygagging about crap most folks probably wouldn't be concerned about while working out. I once called him out on it, and thankfully he tries to avoid working out near me.

people who ask you how many sets you have left, then when you let them on the machine they have no idea what they're doing. i don't even know how to explain what this guy was doing on the lat pulldown...sitting in every position imaginable and then just rotating the bar around...after a while he just looked at me, got off and walked away.
some may say i should have helped him, but he could have easily seen me doing it correctly instead of wasting 5 minutes of my time for him to stop dancing around.
fat people who think they're "big". and 99.99% of them have the worst BO imaginable. a friend of a friend was arguing with me that his arms are bigger, when it's just fat. when he flexes it's the same size as it is when it's relaxed. sure, your arms might be bigger in circumference... but the muscle sure as hell isn't.

As for members dropping dumbbells after a set, not only is it annoying, but it's eventually going to loosen the weights and potentially cause an accident. Not cool.

There is a guy at my gym that sweats bullets when he works out. He leaves sweat puddles on everything and never wipes down the equipment he uses. There are disinfectant bottles everywhere but he won't do it. Some people have no common sense.
There is a woman who puts 500 pounds on the leg press then proceeds to do one inch leg presses. She literally comes down one inch then back up again. Does it a couple times, get up walks around the gym for five minutes and does it again. She does this with every exercise she does. She spends four times longer walking around the gym then she does working out. I call her walk around sally.

In my college gym most if not everything posted here happens. The guy boxing between sets, throwing & droping weights, people standing around while a guy struggles on the bench, not wipping down their stuff, not wearing deoderant = "exchange students from other countries." Leaving their weight on the racks and taking off ect.
My biggest complaint though is putting weight on 2 or 3 machines at once alternating between them. I will walk up and straight take their stuff off and start my own workout. I have no respect for people who cant understand that others around them need this equipment to.
Second would be groups of guys talking dirty about women while my fiance is right there or any other girl for that matter. Its disrespectful and makes them not want to come back.

I agree and disagree with this one. If there are other people wanting to use the equipment, then they should only use one machine at a time, but if no one else is using it/there are identical machines I think it is perfectly fine and I find it bad etiquette to take the machine someone is using to prove a point (this has happened to me; 3 identical bench stations, person takes the one I had setup and had my stuff on)
I guess this all comes down to context; who cares if you stink, scream, sing along and swing at the air if no one is around to be bothered by it.

I can give you a story of each of those lol. There was an mid age man, a little bulky but nothing to really stare and aw about. He would clap his hand and give a super loud grunt. Than he would continue and approach an unweighted barbell and warm up with it for 10 seconds and than leave.
This other guy told me he had two sets of chest presses left on the bench. He was lifting a bit above average. Probably like 80-90lbs each arm. But his breaks were to damn long. He even took the the time to receive a call, do another long ass set and call someone.

Great post, i hate when people throw their weights down just go get attention -.-
Some do it for attention, some do it to avoid injury. I fall into the second category. When pushing 80lb dumbbells for reps I tend to get tired nearing my last lift. Being 130lbs myself it can be kind of hard to lower them slowly when you have no energy left.

Second would be groups of guys talking dirty about women while my fiance is right there or any other girl for that matter. Its disrespectful and makes them not want to come back.
Gotta say this crap winds me up too. Its because of this sort of stuff that my wife will barely use weight machines let alone free weights. I tell her she'll be fine but I can fully see her point.

I never talk dirty or stare like a perv but when I see a hot chick wearing nothing but tight booty shorts and a training bra its kinda hard not to take a quick glance.

Curls in the power rack is quite annoying, especially when they aren't newbies in the gym either.
I have to admit, this is why I like my small gym. not a lot of people, and usually I get to spend my whole two hours on the rack cause no one is there! We also only have two Olympic bars, on eon rack the other on a bench. I do agree with you though, and pretty much to everything said here. I have occasionally dropped dumbells on failure. try not to make a habit of it though :)

Some tool in my gym (maybe 6'0 155 lbs) was doing dumbbell lunges with 30 lb weights and proceeded to THROW them after about 10 steps. Our gym owner is about the size of Ronnie Coleman and didn't take too kindly to it and yelled at him.

Hate the old people at my gym. All they do is stare at me, get in the way, and act weird as ****. I don't get why just because they're old they have to act like ****ing weirdos.

4. Gym instructors who only talk to the pretty ones.
My wife had a free session with a trainer and he literally walked away from her to chat up another girl who wasn't even working out. Not that my wife isn't hot, but she's apparently a little outside his age range. She left after two exercises when it was clear he had other interests.
Before this all happened she asked him how much PT sessions would be and he refused to answer, he only replied with 'how much can you afford?' Not that I'm qualified, but I'm her trainer now which is all good as it gets me into the gym 6 days a week now.
Then there's the trainer at my gym who walks around with sunglasses on... Really dude?

I say speak to your gym manager or owner, let them know what they can do to improve their gyms, even if its a few signs up around the gym with basic etiquette that is expected by everyone. No one can argue they did not know.
Dropping weights and not racking them are my pet hates.

There was this guy at the gym I used to lift at every morning.
We'd call him caveman because he was a complete slob and he was a hairy stocky slouch.
Not only a slob in his appearance but he would always bring in a cup of coffee into the lifting area where he'd spill it everywhere and never bother to clean up after himself.
Then when he was done with the cup he'd leave it wherever he wanted for someone else to clean up. Don't make others clean up after you.
This applies to weights as well, don't leave them lying everywhere to be in the way of everyone else, pure laziness.

Dropping them doesn't bother me so much - 120s are hard to put down softly from on your back. But if the idiots throwing them from the top of the rep, obviosuly that has to stop.
Racking has become my new pet peeve- moving a plate or 2 never used to bother me, but these idiots in my gym (the people who should KNOW to rack) are leaving 400+ on the bars, and if they've squatted or benched those weights, the bars bend. 1/2 the bars are now bent making it even harder to get a workout in at peak time

My only real beef at the moment is an older guy at my gym who clearly doesn't know how most of the equipment works. He only uses the iso machines and bangs the plates like a madman. If he wants to break the machines, he can buy his own and f**k those up. Our school gym is small and they can't afford to fix that crap all the time. Thankfully, I tend to stick to free weights.

Just experienced a new one today, to add to the list. Trash-talkers who need to put down others to make themselves feel bad.
I finished my workout earlier than expected, and decided to try skipping rope, just to see if I still had my rhythm, which thankfully I did. Along comes an older guy, who's clearly in better shape than I am, and starts talking to me like I'm his buddy. Within the first three minutes, he starts talking crap about "someone at his other gym" that skips rope pretty slow.
The first two things I was asking myself is "why the f*** are you talking to me" and "why the hell should it matter to anyone".
I guess this would be case of insecure people who can't mind their own business.

Theres this one guy at my gym that comes in wearing a hoodie, winter hat, gloves etc.. Hes around 350+ lbs. He will do about 20 minutes of cardio sweating like a pig and then he will take his hoodie off and get the most amount of sweat you can imagine on a machine. He dosen't even wipe it off after :\
I guess he dosen't realize that sweating more will make you lose fat.

1) Talking on Phone
2) Singing out loud
3) Giving Machines to your relative like husband wife ( especially trademills and cycles ) which are limited when someone is waiting
4) Not wiping sweat

When I first joined a gym i remember their was this Polish guy who was massive and used to scream while doing heavy lifts and i must say it used to intimidate me. But then you think about it when your on your last rep and struggling what do you think of or do in order for you to complete it? I do not scream i think of running on a beach with the perfect body and that gets me through it. So each person has their own way of pushing themselves.
As for slamming weights onto the floor i think in some situations its ok, but people can get hurt in smaller gyms.

I hate the superabundance of gym rules, which aren't followed. Some gyms have stickers all over the walls. For instance: towel obligatory. So i rent a towel for like 1 buck when I forgot 1, and I see several other people without a towel leaving wet machines behind for me to clean up. No mobile phones: people calling and texting all the time. And finally: no outdoor shoes allowed. What is the point of putting these stickers all over the place if nobody bothers to stick to these rules?

I've never brought a towel with me. If it's that bad I'll wipe it up with my jacket but honestly who really cares about a little sweat.
Also whats with the outdoor shoes? wtf kind of rule is that. Some kind of joke? What is the point of putting all those stickers up when they're dumb as ?
The only rule in the gym should be "PUT YOUR ****ING WEIGHTS BACK"

I love people who move benches all around the weight room and not put it back where they found it.
I also love the people working out with easy light weight ans if thats going to help them get bigger and stronger. And I've given up on people racking their own weight properly because theres just too many lazy people at the gym today.

What scares me is when I arrive to the gym and go into the locker room to change, then smell a horrific odor coming from one of the stalls. Hear the toilet flush and watch the guy leave without washing his hands. Whats even more frightening is seeing the S.O.B. using the same equipment I want to work out on. WTF??? Makes me want to carry sanitary wipes in my gym bag.........pisses me off! Yes, I am slightly germophobic. That's not called being a germophobe, it's called being normal. Disgusting, I'd report him at the gym (srs)

Some guy spits on the floor in the gym.. horrible.
Another kicks the swiss balls against the wall and doesn't care where they land, none of the staff do anything because he is a little slow. WTF? People lifting could get hurt.
Another guy does high kicks and twirls and jumps about like a ballerina singing to himself.
I also hate people that jump in on your **** during rest periods without asking. Some old woman jumped on the lat pulldown, dropped the weight to like 5kg and did a set of about 60 when I went to fill up my water. Towel and book etc all at the machine.

I had an interesting one happen to me...I was running on the treadmill just getting 30 minutes of cardio in. (normally run outdoors but even in the morning it's 90 degrees in Texas right now so I run indoors half the time) and this lady comes up and starts cleaning up the treadmill while I'm still on it. *It just made me really uncomfortable...

When people steal weight of the machine you are using! Hey rudeness, what if I am going up in weight next set and I need that plate? Inconsiderate. There's plenty of other machines that people aren't on that they could take the weights from but since mine is the closest they take mine.

I experienced that one recently. The odor could take the paint off the walls. Guy walks out, and heads off to go meet his personal trainer. I go back to my locker and pick up the antibacterial wipes. Whenever I used any equipment that he used first, I wiped it down in front on him. He and his trainer both got the message. The women in the gym got the message. Mission accomplished.

The gym is an eclectic group, as is the real world. Learn to deal with it. Do a different workout if someone is using your machine. Be patient. It's not that serious. If someone doesn't wipe up after themselves, wipe it yourself. Some people aren't as classy or cultured as you are. If these things upset you so much, you're on your way to an early grave.

Haha I hate when people do crazy moves in the middle of the gym.
Also I hate when people talk about their nutrition/supplements/weights they do AS LOUD AS POSSIBLE.....just to let everyone in the gym know...
