Awsome work! You'r just going to have to pull that **** in the gym where its just you and that weight, no platform, news cameras or parking lots or any of that **** and just kill it because you obviously got it in you. You'r no where near in your prime in this sport and your killing some major ass! Life can't get much better can it, good freinds, awsome lifts, and great food!
hhaha thanks bro
got just a few pics frm the DL...didnt get pics the rest of the day for some reason, forgot :p
here's an easy warmup with 405
no belt, no straps, no chalk
Opening lift with 485lbs...easy stuff
here's my first attempt at 555lbs....notice my left foot sliding back already on the boards
i was that close to locking it and my foot slipped enough where i couldnt maintain the pull due to balance...damn boards

Those are some awsome pics! I love lifting pics. 405 looked so easy. Is it just your preference to dead without your shoes? THink maybe if you would of worn them you wouldnt of slipped.
hehe thanks bro
yeah, 405 looks like a broom in my hands there :)
yeah, ive gotten used to shoeless for less ROm...any other surface its fine, but the wood was definately bc i didnt have shoes on

Push and Grip!
Bench: 45x15, 95x5, 155x5, 205x1, 235x0, 235x0, 215x1
Push Press, clean 1st rep: 45x10, 95x5, 135x1, 165x0, 135x1
Cuban Rotations: 15x10, 15x10(pr, 1st time)
DB holds: 100x10(warmup), 130x10(warmup),150 x 32.3(easy PR)
NOTES:
-went to co-rec tonight to help a friend...decided to go heavy on bench, and do a bit of push, which ill do again friday
-Bench was goin strong, 205 was paused and quick, 235 just stalled a few inches above the chest...im weak off the chest, strong lockout...cant wait to bench with my shirt sometime soon for a new PR, 215 was paused for 3 seconds, solid pushup...dont understand it..mental like my squat maybe?
-push press was just some work with continental clean style, and full presses for early nationals work...135 was an easy powerclean and pres....165 got cleaned, just legs werent fresh bc of saturday, press failed at the usual, no biggie.was more working with the clean than the press :)
-cubans HURT the first few reps, then went better..first time doin em
-DB holds were solid...had NO CHALK, no belt...had em for an easy 30 then dropped because my hands had no chalk, and didn't wanna lose a callous....these are the biggest they have there. Give e some chalk and I would have been very close to hitting my one minute goal

Nice grip man! are those cuban rotations like DB cuban snatches? I absolutely ****ing love those!!
no idea...cubans are like top of side laterals, rotate up/back
but thanks bro, not bad for no chalk :D next time, with chalk, i WILL hit my goal of 1 minute with them

Great workout poppa. Good to see you benching again. Just probabley aren't used to going that heavy as you haven't in awhile! Im sure you can get it easy next week, its all mental.
wont be doin it...just was a break from incline bench this push workout, and just felt like goin heavy.....wont see it again soon

150 is a sick hold!
Probably missed bench because of the long pause...3 seconds is sick itself. 235 might have been yours had you held the pause for 1 sec.
Still, it's always nice to break from the routine and do something for the fun of it.

Not a bad hold with or without chalk!!!
Any plans of timing a dbell hold with 200lbs soon?
maybe...they dont have any 200lb DBs at the co-rec, ill look but I dont think we have any at Flex Appeal either....
basically, the gym DBs cant hold me anymore :D
hehe, if flex doesnt have one ill check when i get home, I think they go up to 2 there
puttin together my plan of attack for the last 3 weeks

-leg press was exploding up as hard as possible, to develop leg drive for axle
-calf raises were easy and solid
-tire was BETTER THAN EVER! easiest ive ever done a tire...no air breaks down either course, was barely even pausing at the knee..blow it to there, within 2-3 seconds had it goin over...was just flyin thru this!!!

-standing calf raise is dif. than typical place the pin in the weight for the right stack..its freeweight, and alot harder, PR was for this style machine

Youre gonna kick so much ass! Any idea of what the other competitiors will be at strength wise?
workout 1: golf
16 days to Victory
Workout 2:
@ Home Sandbag(sand tube) workout
all lifts done with a 70lb sand tube*
all lifts done using a hammer grip...gripping the ends like a log press
Set 1: Bicep Curls x 15
Set 2: Curls x 15 Supersetted w/ Overhead x 15
Set 3: Overhead x 15 SS w/ Curls x 15
Set 4: Overhead x 10
NOTES:
-sand tube is like a 1 foot x 3 foot sand tube, its true use is to add weight to your trunk during winter
-nice quick 5 minute workout, got a huge sweat goin bc did it in our hot, stuffy laundry room
-lower back was sore, and delts felt sore earlier, so decided to take a rest day, let body heal a bit for saturdya and contest
-was just gonna do curls, did overhead, and due to lighter weight felt good, no pain
-this will carrover well to alot of stuff in 16 days... overhead, conans wheel, and the "stone" for the medley, which is a 1ft x 3 ft tube of concrete wrapped in duct tape...very similair dimensions to my tube, except + 110lbs
-overall good workout for a short, sweet deal

-OMG what a god damn workout!! PRs all around! Dunno where to start!
-went there not feelin that great, felt like 80degrees out, hadnt eaten but a bowl of cereal, and felt blah
-conans went well...550 was an easy 2, coulda went some more, 640 was the most ive done a lap with, and 840 was a BITCH..moved it about 2 feet and yanked a muscle around my lower insertion of the right lat in my back....at contest the weight is 500, look for 3+ laps
-medley went ok...stone i was runnin with easily, farmers wasnt greattoday, but tire was solid...jammed my left mid finger on the last flip, a bit sore
-axle was amazing...big Shawn helped me out with these...old PR was 165 for a few reps...175 was easy...190 was done, almost fell over backwards it was so god damn fast!!!!!, 200 was my first 200lb overhead press!, then went for 210, and after 2 failed attempts(never putting down, as in try to press, came back to chest), on the 3rd push I got it!! Also congrats on finally breaking 200 with the axle press. I don't think the competition knows what's coming in May.
BTW, the girl in the audience is hella funny...she screwed up All the Way to Reno, then she just turned The One I Love into something funny. (If you wanna know, check out Scott's journal :D ) Even Micheal Stipe gives this boot a dry sense of humor.

Damn bro.............That conans wheel you did today was absolutely incredible! 500 will be hella light comparitively at your competition, and since that is the weight to be used, it's safe to say that you will do extremely well in that event not to mention others. The axle press is awesome as well bro, pressing 205 or more IMO over year head is a very awesome feat of strength! I remember when you had problems with those types of exercises, but no more! :)

Like Shawn said though, we'll get to where we can do a lap with that, and any contest we see with Conans will be ours  I'm already doin a full lap(not even to failure) with 640, which is 140lbs heavier than contest weight

Powershrugs: 135x15, 225x10, 315x10
Alt DB curl:30x10, 40x10, 45x6(PR)
NOTES:
-quicky workout...****ty weather, lots of homework = short workout at the co-rec
-Didn't do any lower back to allow my sore lower back to heal up and get ready for contest
-CG rows were done in fingertips, and no torso sway or leg drive...basically strict, easy stuff
-Powershrugs im still getting form down, but this was easy stuff as well, 135 feels like a JOKE anymore in the hands, held it in fingertips, no thumb
-Biceps have gotten MUCH!! stronger lately...all the strongman stuff(conans, stones, etc) is paying off...i gotta measure, prolly got some new size as well, as stretch marks have grown again. But this was a 5lb and 1 rep extra PR today..biceps have always sucked, finally starting to improve
-overall nice easy pull day to keep pull muscles ready and workin

I wanna know where the big pins are that you can supposedly used to add plates...because neither gym has one.
But at least those weights are only for the cable machine...the actual lat pulldown stations go higher.

bicep work = conans wheel victory  dick
OMG
so tonight I go next door bc they have ppl over as usual, and since theres 3 hot chicks there i sit down with my Mikes hard lemonade and play a drinkin game with em...sippin, still being good to my limits, and staying completely sober...
well this one hot chick is talkative, im payin attention only to her, vice versa, we talk the whole night...DD goes to take em home, i go for a ride...on the way back lifting comes up, turns out she loves to workout, but doesnt know any of the machines at the co-rec like at home..so she starts BEGGING me to take her to the gym and train her...im like sure! figuring its another case of o train me, then never follow up...well, she like forces me(didnt take much) to get out a pen and paper(coneniently in my pocket already) and to take her phone number down, so I get her number(forgot to mention she lives by me at home too), and tells me repeatedly I better call her Monday
 I love lifting

Tire Flip*, 50ft:: 450 x :60
Overall 2nd Place
NOTES:
-Left yesterday, stayed at a REAL nice Holiday Inn...2 friends, parents and uncle and a cousin went to watch
-weighed in at 244
-felt like **** yesterday adn today again...barely had been eating bc of the nausea, lower back was sore too
-axle was so-so...200 was my original goal til I hit 210 in training...200 went up easy, 215 I had the legs today but the lockout failed me....
-18"blew....didn't like the bar, wasn't feelin em...everyone commented on my hitch and how I'm like Schoonie :D 560 just wasnt leavin the blocks
-Conan's went well..it had a dif. feel than ours at the gym, longer arm...they measured from about where the weight was, not the end of the arm..so the official distances are shorter than we actually moved...I went 3.25 laps or ~191ft...but accounting for te difference, I atually went around 230ft..this was more than any of the p/f/m, masters, teens or alot of the mens lightwights did I was told
-stones went awesome...blew thru them, had the crowd goin from my screamin, and hit a huge stone PR both time and size...next one was 280 and just didnt have the back left to get it lapped...was quite happy with my performance though
-severe thunderstorms were rolling in, so we cut the medley down to just a tire flip..not everyone even finished that before the downpours....I was the next to last to go...the tire had NO traction anywhere...was a biatch. Pushed it over to cross the line as time expired
-overall a good contest....odd, my worst event was one of my better, adn my best was my worst...*shrug*
-placed 1st in the Conans, 2nd in the stones, and 3rd in the 18 and axle...our 3rd guy didn't finish the tire, so they didn't count the event
-Was a very fun day...i got lots of videos and pictures to upload

Good job bro. Should be really proud of 2nd, especially considering the competition.
What you have to train for now going into Nationals is to be ready for any type of equipment. One thing I walked away with from your comments is that you were used to Shawn's equipment, so it was a little awkward with the stuff they used. (Do I understand that right?) From here on, have Shawn throw some surprises at you in event training. Don't get comfortable with anything...not even grips. Go into Nationals ready to adapt to anything and you'll kill your PRs there.

-leg press was done slow down, explosive up as usual to help axle press
-standing cal raises were done fast and explosively for the truck pull
-overall solid leg day..built a huge sweat, didnt waste time between sets at all
Overall Grade: B-
Awesome squats. What do you think you could handle on those now when you're fresh?
What are Karlsen squats exactly? They sound interesting.
Very nice sets today big guy

Go for the fkin 4 plates already! You got that **** in you.
And how effective do you think karlsen squats are for strongman/powerlifting? I imagine they stress the quads more right?
karlsen squats are extremely effective for tire flip and such

Olifts and plyos all you need is a barbell, boxes and some stairs!!
ill be doin them alot bro
5/8 "workout" lol
Ok, so saturday I helped a friend move to her new apartment across campus...well i helped her load her car up carryin her stuff out of her sorority..she didnt use like ANY boxes, just bagged stuff or piled clothes to her car...
well we get to her new place, its like 90out, and she lives on the 3rd floor..open-air hallways like my place
i half joking say "ya know, I got a 50ft rope for pulling trucks in the trunk...i can just tie'er off and pull ur stuff up" i didnt wanna do the stairs over and over bc my legs were sore from the Karlsen Squats last week
well, to my suprise, she agrees!!! so, using knots i learned on the fire dept, and my tryuck-pull tested rope, I go tie it off...first few trial runs are just a few articles of clothing bundled...her roomie pulled em up, it was working, so we increased the workload, and I started pulling things
a bundle of aLOT of clothes, a big metal lamp, dozens of bags and bookbags and such filled with stuff....they were impressed with the speed at which I pulled, which was fun...like I told them , my back is my strongpoint :D
worked up a nice sweat, got some upper back work in, and got to carry her cabinets and CP chair up the stairs....
:D

I'm just sad I can't get that week off from work...would have been cool to see you tear things up in WV.
5/11 Cardio
wanted to train today, but got caught at the fire dept doin paperwork then training
2am on 5/12-> 7 Minutes, HIT-ish Jump rope
i bought a rope jump rope, so its VERY light...hard to jump rope slow bc you have to forcefully pull it around due to it being light rope material. ON a 75 degree muggy night made for a good cardio session...did some light work then would work to a quicker and quicker tempo until it was all out
need to work with it some more :D

-got to the gym and just wasn't feeling it
-push press got heavy quick, wtf...reps went decent i guess
-incline still ****ing sucks
-JM press was decent
-overheads i cant even do there because all they have is a LOW bench, no seats, and i was so unstable tryiong to press up it was hurting my lower back
-hub grip just happened to have hubbed plates, so tried it no chalk
-left gym pissed off, felt like a ****ty workout

-wanted to do full DL, but there were 3 jackasses standing with a foot ON the damn bar...i ask if theyre done, "oh were just starting"....finish my curls which felt heavy and sucked and theyre still ****ing 'just starting'
-get pissed off and go 18" instead since noone there knows what a ****ing squat rack is anyway. From there I get to listen to the idiots on the DL bar across the gym screamin at e/o to get it up when theyre only using about 315....jesus christ
-I didn't want to do 18's because Im already pissed at them from contest, and now I couldnt even get 515 up, ****ing wonderful
-GMs felt heavy because my lower back is sore 24/7 the last few months basically, I just wake up sore, so i did 1 rep with 225 feeling like something was going to burst, so I quit that ****ing exercise too
-CG row being usually my favorite lift I figured might save the day, only to again miss a ****ing weight that should've been an easy ****ing set

When I did my program of constantly psyching myself up and going for my 1rm 3 times a week it messed with my cns.
I had to take about 3 months off doing a little cardio and have to start again.
Maybe you should rest a little more.
You don't have to take my advice because it might just be a mind thing.
John Promise
05-13-2004, 06:51 PM
Don't say that! He only has a month or so before nationals.
But I agree about taking a bit of rest...been taking it easy with the weights since May 1, but sounds like you're killing yourself by moving your stuff, and helping everyone move theirs.
Even if you don't want to take another full-blown week off, try a week or two with light weight/high reps...ala AMG. Could be your body just needs a bit of change.
As for the back, is sleep messing with that too? I can't seem to sleep in a position that's comfortable on my back and I think that's what's been contributing to my lower back soreness lately.
Other things to consider:
-increasing calories (sure you don't want to hear that right now)
-maybe supplement with glutamine or (I'm going to butcher the spelling on this) chondriten
-more active recovery
-cut back on time in the gym, and choose the most efficient exercises for your goals at nationals
A lot of it is mental, and once you break through that barrier, you won't look back on this. But to a degree your body is telling you it's had too much lately. I know breaking isn't an option, so just listen to your body and adapt until its happy again...my body wasn't built for lifting, so I'm doing this all the time.
Don't fret bro, you'll get over this.
yeah, i havent been doin a 1RM all the time though...heavy doubles/triples maybe, but iunno....even with the assistance **** with nowhere NEAR a 1RM it sucked today
yeah, it seems like sleep does it alot, esp if I sleep longer than 5-6hours.
rest time + increased calories = no need to even spend time getting ready for nationals becuase I'll never make a weight class or be ready
im already thinkin....atlas stones start at 66" which Im horrible at high stones....axle press with a weight I have yet to clean and have only put overhead 4 times.....etc etc etc.... 6 weeks to go...which means under 6 weeks training time...away from my usual; gym so no axle to train with except on saturdays.....etc
startin to think about just workin on weak points and increasing overall body strength instead of doin contest after contest this summer
Fullback_45
05-14-2004, 01:23 AM
That SOUNDS like a major descision but it really isnt bro. In the end, you want to do what you feel happiest doing. If increaseing your totaley streangth is good, pour 100% of everything you have into that. If not, FK the guestimation "weeks, approx lifts" and stuff and just go 100% bro. Look at it this way. You def havent plateaued because no one just plateaus like this. Keep your head up, stay positive,.................fk, maybe you should just pounds some fking squats!

05-14-2004, 03:07 AM

John Promise
05-14-2004, 03:15 AM
If you want to take the summer off from competition, do it, but fight to Nationals...You've been so excited about that one, no way in hell should you miss it because you're having a crappy week now.
Better to put in an average effort in Nationals then to spend the rest of your life wondering how you would have done. You will regret missing this one...and don't give up on it because you'll probably feel better by then and surprise yourself.
So what if Gold's doesn't have an axle...make do, adapt...good practice for adapting to uncertain situations at your contests...And maybe it's time to start collecting your own strongman equipment so you don't have to depend on finding a strongman gym..:)

Now this is the smartest thing you could do. You need to relax (didn't we go through this before? :D) catch your breath and get ready for the long haul.
You need to bring yourself up to the level you want to be, on your own terms.
Meaning you must invision how big and strong you want to become. Hold that pic in your mind, and make it happen. Let nothing stop you.

Bro, you are taking it too hard to yourself for this ****. Sure a few gym with ****ty gear and *******s is gonna **** your workout up, and if you had a ****ty mental day, with a worn out body you are gonna have a **** day. Take it easy, get yourself back together and kill some weight. As for taking off the summer contests.. NOTES:
-Good day @ Alex's
-hub grip was solid...35's soon
-Bench went alright...260 was VERY VERY VERY close, prolly coulda had it 7/10 times
-2 band bench went well...worked around 50% 1RM for triples with my bands
-Yardie Press is a reverse grip french press...hurt with a barbell, will work better with a cambered bar
-crucific hold was hard, just kinda pinch/grabbed the outside rim of the plate and held to the sides...havent done these much
-militarys felt strong, 115 felt the lightest of the sets thanks to crucifix LOL

notes:
-haven't made it back to apartment yet, so still dont have my PR text file to say for sure on some of these
-BO rows felt good...draining on lower back as usual, but solid...havent done them in MONTHS
-shrugs felt decent, esp at the 135
-curls felt stronger today, dunno last time I did 100 with a BB, I prefer cambered bars, easier on wrists
-T-bar rows were done with the barbell, and using my straps as a grip...put the straps INSIDE the plates to get a bigger ROM, and turned them to face e/o.....made it a harder exercise, pr for this way
-pinch grip went well today...next goal = 2 25's

-rev. pec dec i hadnt done in FOREVER but i remmeber never getting that high before...lots of accessory lift PRs for overhead lately...good sign, overhead will blossom this year
-Lockouts blew again, thanks to the ****ty equipment at golds...no seat, so again used a LOW bench, more strain was on my back in a bad way then lockouts got

LEGS
@ Gold's Gym
Squats: 45x5, 95x5, 145x5, 205x3, 285x1, 335x1, 375x1, 405 x 1/2, 405 x 1/2
Zercher Lockouts(from bottom of groin..LOW!): 225x5, 250x5, 280x5, 320x1, 350x1, 375x1, 405x1(PR!)
NOTES:
-They close at 5pm, so I had to cut short
-squat just wasn't in my mind...usually when im gonna max, i know the entire day i just FEEL it, didnt feel it tried to force it....had a local strongman watching me, he said(which is true) my ass comes up first not my body....I took 405 strong off the rack, and easy down, and even got out of the hole fast, its once im out of the hole and moving up, my lower back takes over and my form goes.....i think it's b/c it used to have to before i strengthened my legs, but now its hurting me instead of helping..he said he was SURE i could've done 405 and more with proper form. Oh well, ill work some form this week and try again in a week or two, bc i KNOW i can do this...if I was true maxing today I'd have went 390 and got it for a PR
-zerhcers were off the pins which were level with the very bottom of my groin, same place they were for my squats safety. MY ZERCHER IS STRONGER THAN MY FULL SQUAT!!!!!! these were damn about as low as I'd go with a full zercher, only a few inch at most difference, these were L-O-W. Usually I do zercher LO from just below belly button. Well, CRUISED thru all these, even 405 wasn't a true max, I just was done for the day....max is prolly 420-450 on these. I love zerchers/conans wheel
-overall ok workout other than 405....lower back still overtrained, didn't feel it, and still almost had 405, so cant complain, then after a squat maxout, still hit 405 on zerchers so can't be all bad :D
Overall Grade: B+

CG cable row: 80x10, 130x6, 160x6, 170x6
Rev. Grip Lat Pulldown: 100x8, 120x8

-rev grip pulldowns hurt the shoulders so I stopped doing them
-alt db curl felt heavy and bad today as well
-shrugs went ok, nothing special, like this freeweightloading machine bc it works grip in the same plane as car DL
-behind back forearm curls got a nice burn going, I missed doing these
-overall ****ty workout...slept alot, but woke up sore(damn matress) and didn't eat much bc I woke up to a firecall

So what does this mean for Nationals? Please tells us that after all your anticipation, you won't let a few ****ty workouts derail that.

ye i meant to ask u that on aim but forgot...
there will be other nationals that actually mean something.
these ones mean SO much that you dont even have to compete in the p/f/m division. As long as ur a police/fire or military person, and just COMPETE at some point during the year, you're qualified  makes qualifying feel like such an accomplishment don't it?
wouldn't have been nearly as ready as I wanted, workouts been crap. If I couldnt win in ohio, theres no way id win p/f/m nationals. gonna just grow, work on weak points, increase core and overall body strength, and work towards long term goals.

Proppy's hitting the juice? Or is this more of your really funny dry humor?
And sorry to see you won't do nationals...you were so excited about it before, but whatever you feel is best for you, good luck.
