I get quite a sore back sitting down. Sometimes in the middle-upper part of the back, just underneath the shoulder blades, and sometimes at the lower back, nearer the glute area.
It feels like I need to "snap" my back to make it better - although I don't.
1. What do you suggest, bearing in mind this is quite a long-term problem. I guess you suggest chriopracter?
2. How can I avoid any more/increased pain? I know how you are supposed to sit, but to be honest, it's quite hard keeping it up for long periods of time. Any advice?
The links in my sig will guide you to a chiropractor who can fix your lumbosacral disc problem. There is actually a seminar in the UK coming up, if you call ahead and make arrangements it could be a good opportunity for you to get care.
Until you get an adjustment, sit minimally and use ice 20 minutes at a time.

Thanks for the great advice and speedy too!
Just one more thing. I get a sore back when running too. This is always in the lower back, normally JUST above the glutes. After only about 6 or 7 minutes of running it starts to set in. If literally feels like my back is about to snap in half. Any thoughts?
I'll look at those links in your signature. Thanks again.

When you get the subluxation adjusted this and the other pain should go.

alright here is my question, i play football for my school and our team chiropractor and team nurse i guess you could say... always tapes up anybody that needs it and cracks our back and necks you know, well i had been afraid to go to her because i knew that she would find something wrong with me and i might not be able to play, but i finally decided to go to her and have her crack my back because it was somewhat sore... figures that my shirt wasnt off more than 10 seconds and she said "boy, you need to get down to my office soon cause this doesnt look right" lucky she dint say n e thing to my coaches, from what i know.
but she seemed to see something wrong...
should i be worried?

10-250 US. Average office visit for an established patient in eastern US is a bit more than $45 I believe.

If you have a problem would it not be better to know and get it fixed, especially sooner than later?
Is ignoring a health problem a better option?
Many people live without chiropractic. Many live healthier with it.

I believe the normal price in the UK is between:
?40 ($81 usd), and about
?60 ($122 usd)
Obviously you can pay much more but that I think is the average price. I've never been but always thought I should go.
oziem - I really don't like the idea of having to re-visit the chiropracter every few months for treatment. I don't want to treat it, I want to cure it - if that makes sense. I am seriously going to try to book an appointment now though, as I would like to get rid of this lower back pain/discomfort.

when you meet the Gonstead doc(s) tell them so. You will find someone to fix it. That does not mean a preventative checkup in the future would not be advised.

Hello Oziem, this may be a weird question. But I get hot flushes/red ears at random times (after hot showers at night is the only consistent pattern)and I read somewhere that chiropractors can fix this? is this true, have you ever heard of such a feat?

That's a pretty harsh comment to make to someone who is generously offering help and advice with no reward.
Instead of responding with a sarcastic, arrogant and simply rude message why not explain again or in a different way what you want to know.

Since vasculartiy is controlled by nerves yes this may be a possibility. I have not personallly heard of or seen this corrected, but again it may be. I have seen mixed results with Raynaud's and other vascular phenomena; especially stroke and birth marks.
This may be an individual adaptive response 'normal' for you.
One thing for sure is; if you need adjustment, you will function more "healthfully" with the proper care.

I have a fairly bad case of flat feet and overpronation. My orthotics work very well, but I was wondering if you had any recommendations on certain shoe styles/soles that might help as well?

If they allow you to wear the new boots for ROTC I hear they wear like sneakers. You want a tough sole (not vibram) if you want them to last longer. Otherwise it doesn't matter much for stability.
If you were not wearing orthotics I like Brooks Beast for stability sake.

I've had this clump/knot in the back of my neck for about 3 months now. I'd say it's inflammed.
I've had it massaged down a few times in the past (non-professional massage), but it tends to come back.
It's starts and is concentrated at the splenius capitis, goes to the semispinalis capitis and goes down a bit into the inner trapezius until the neck ends and connects with the spine.
On a daily basis I find myself rubbing and squeezing this area with high force.
Any advice on what I should do? Thanks :).

I was told by doctors that Physio could possibly prevent worse pain but not necessarily ease the current pain.

I treat cancer patients. Tends to make people more comfortable and prolong the inevitable in the terminal cases. I went to school with several "cured" by chiros. Though I believe there is severe nerve dysfunction in cancers there are also usually toxic catylists and poor nutrition and this needs to be addressed. I think chiro, detoxes, nutrition, good attitude, maybe medicine (chemo and rad should be last resorts) and certainly prayer are all valid.
6 Beyond that now though people still debate. It is actual for you right?Cancer is when the DNA of a cell is damaged so that it replicates excessively and does not determinate. What does that have to do with prayer, toxins, attitude, spinal subluxations, or even nutrition? Antioxidants in nutrition can help prevent cancers by blocking free radical damage to the nucleus, but that's about it.
Radiation and chemotherapy are used to kill cancerous cells. These cells have damaged DNA, they need to die. That's all there is to it. If we don't kill them, what will? Our other cells? They may not be able to sense damaged cell in all cases.
The problem with vitalistic approaches is they make this assumption that there must certainly be some way to increase overall health which will somehow make cancer just go away. This has never been proven consistantly, and especially not in a way where their methods will increase each person's health adequately and specifcally for them and the cancer they have contracted.

Dear Oziem, just reporting back:) Came back from the chiro 2 hours ago and feeling worse than I did before going in. (It's my 1st time. Maybe it's supposed to be that way. Don't know). He put me face down and applied some kinda gel (that got warm after a while), loosening the area between shoulder blade and spine. Then he cracked my whole spine. Then he turned me face up and twisted my head left once and once right. Never heard this much cracking noise in my life! Told me to come back "to make sure everything aligned ok"..... My concern is: Am I supposed to be still in pain?
Many thanks.

Sure. The kyphosis pain could be remedied quickly. In time it may possibly be reduced. Read up on Gonstead technique. (In all fairness, many techniques may reduce this pain).

Hey Doc,
I hurt my back around January of this year. I was just warming up doing rows when I just felt a weird tweak. Didn't really hurt until about a month or so later and I decided to see a chiro. He said I tweaked my SI joint and that my hamstrings have become extremely tight. I used to be able to palm the ground while bending over now I cannot touch my knees.
Then the pain got worse around June where I got the shooting pain down my left leg and I had an X-ray taken and the doctor said I had compression between one of my lower back disks. He said this as well as the SI joint issue was causing my pain.
Well after going to a chiro 3x a week during the summer I felt a lot better. Still no flexibility in my hamstrings but relatively no pain.
Now that I have moved back to school thigns have gotten a lot worse. I have not been able to goto the gym for the past two weeks due to severe pain. Now the pain goes all the way to my achilles to the point that it feels as if sometimes it is going to snap. I went to the hospital this past week and they said I might have a herniated disc, SI imflamation, as well as hamstring tendonitis. They said I needed to see an orthopaedic and get an MRI.
I called 10 different orthopaedics and couldn't get an appointment for another two weeks. Basically I am asking what should I do in the mean time? I have been prescribed skelaxin, percocets, and ibuprofen. I am resting and haven't been able to lift but is there anything else I can do? Should I return to the chiro since I was seeing relief in the summer? Or should I wait to see the orthopaedic in case something else has gone wrong?
ps sorry for the big wall O text...
Thanks
Wilson
Just a little update on my situation. Went to an orthopaedic, he said that it seems it isn't a herniated disc. That it is my SI joint, but more importantly I have torn my hamstring lol. Not funny but I guess it is since I didn't even take that into consideration.
He has me going to physical therapy 3x a week for a month as well as visiting him once week. He did some sort of adjustment to my SI joint similar to what my chiro was doing.
Any further advice you would suggest oh great Oziem??

If you can get more specific on the pelvis adjustment that should do it. i have seen folks with torn hamstrings and pelvic fractures recover fine once the SI was correct. If you can get a proper film and Gonstead adjustment that would be the ideal. Exhaust that approach before manipulation, shots and surgery.

I have been searching for an image or something of the adjustment he did but I cannot find one lol and it is too hard to describe
But today I went to physical therapy and she said that she does not believe I have a torn hamstring but that it is in fact a disc issue...who the hell do I believe? BTW physical therapy hurt like hell and it took about an hour after for the pain to go away. I have to go back on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday next week as well as see the orthopedic again next Friday.

There are cases of sudden growth when subluxation is corrected and certainly of kids in this office exceeding expectations of growth when the spine is optimal...
This being said I would not be focusing on this as an outcome, rather get yourself in optimal health; your body will do what it needs to do whatever that may be.

You can do muscle testing; ergonometers etc...
but what if you did have a problem? The best thing to do is rule out a spinal/spinal nerve problem and get it adjusted if that is causing atrophy.

do rest and use ice. If you have a significant sprain chiropractic is the correction. You know within 3 days. Either it's better or not. If not it is best to get the thing fixed within one week's time if possible.

Chronic true Insomnia is a prarasympathetic nervous interruption. Either the vagus or the nervi errigentes are impinged. The atlas or a sacral disc is adjusted and often met with success. See a chiro for this (referrals links in my sig).
While in recovery you might use GABA or ZMA but you may have very rapid results.
Make sure your bed and pillow are appropriate as well.

Chiropractic.
Chiropractic is the philosophy, science and art of correcting hindrance (known as subluxation) to nervous system control of the body. Chiropractors perform adjustments (correction by hand) of these subluxations and the body performs more optimally.
Curing symptoms of disease by taking something powerful (like Cell-Tech) is medicine.
Chiropractic and medicine are different.
Chiropractic finds early sources (references of spinal manipulation) recorded in history by Hippocrates and Paul in the New Testament c. 2300 and 1950 years ago. Modern chiropractic was established in the USA in 1895.
Chiropractic is widely used by successful athletes. I care for athletes of all ages. Two of my mentors were chiropractors for the Green Bay Packers, the US Olympic Weight Lifting Team, respectively.
Bring on the questions. I will try to to answer as well as possible. Thanks for your patience in advance.

My son is 15 and playing varsity high school football. Last year and this year he has experienced back spasms and/or knots and pain, mostly in his middle back. Because of this problem, last year in the offseason he started a weight training program including barbell rows, lat pulldowns and supermans to help strenghten his back. Although the first month of this season his back was fine, due to time limitations, he has not been able to weight train during the season and again started experiencing knots in his back and pain on a regular basis.
Are there other excercises he should do to strenthen his back, or is it just that he stopped weight training when the season started, his back muscles became weaker, and therefore the knots/pain?
P.S. We had taken him for an MRI and his spine is fine.

Sir
this is a referred pain caused from another location in his spine. This is why nothing showed locally. Spasm is likely caused from the neck. The impinged nerve should be dealt with; muscle weakness is not the issue here.

Thanks for the response.
My son has been seeing a chiropractor each week for the last 5 weeks. The chiropractor is adjusting his neck each week as well as addressing the pain caused by the knots in his back. She is the one who identified the problem as muscle weakness.
How should the impinged nerve be identified??
Should he be seeing someone other than a chiropractor??

If you are getting results stick with it. If you are not satisfied you ought consider the Gonstead method. The analysis and adjustment gets most excellent results.

Due to my scoliosis (or atleast I believe it to be the cause), I cannot past 90 or even to parallel without either lifting my heels, or leaning too far forward to keep my balance, unless I'm doing body weight squats and holding onto something. It's my understanding that you should push through your heels and not the balls of your feet to go easy on your knees. Should I stop doing squats if I can't do them right? Or is there anything you recommend to do that might allow me to squat correctly.
Thanks man.

a coach/trainer may advise you better than I on your form; you may look into putting a board under your heels.
I hope you are having a chiro work on your spine. That ought to give you more flexibility.
?
If you are so limited by this spine condition is squatting the most sensible exercise for you?

Inflamed sciatic nerve ending. Get the L5 disc checked out chiropractically is my advice to you. Look into Gonstead (see links below).

I'm just a college student with no insurance, so no chiro for me.
But I don't know, I never really knew that I had scoliosis till a physical 2 years ago, and I had just been doing squats without realizing my form was bad. I've since limited myself to hack squats or just hyperextensions pretty much. I just really want to get back to squatting and I started wondering about this.

Our chiropractor does give him some relief each week, but would strengthening his back muscles further, eliminate the need to see the chiropractor each week; or as you originally said could it be a problem with his neck that we need to address (other than seeing the chiropractor)???

Not sure if this is something a chiro could help with but you'd be familiar with anatomy and be able to at least tell me what I hurt.
Pain in mid back out to my right. I get no pain while leaning forward or backward or to either side. The pain is when I twist my trunk.
I did this during squats, a little forward lean and a tip to one side of the barbell. That's as far as I can tell/my assumption given the pain.
It is pretty much in the area where lats insert but I don't get pain doing pullups or anything.
Thanks in advance for your time :)

I think this to be a rotatory disc sprain of a mid thoracic level. These are quite easily corrected with an adjustment most of the time.

The benefits are only (if that) for anterolisthesis/spondylolisthesis. Inversion is to be avoided if you have any disc problem (which is most people).

Hello there how you doin? I was doing Incline DB Press and i guess I tried to do to much weight because when i was lifting i couldnt push the weight up with my left arm and as I kept trying I then felt a sharp pain in my left side of my upper back. So i took off for a week and then went back to lifting. I felt pain in my left upper back, pain in my left shoulder, and down my left arm mainly in triceps and very rarely my fingers feel a little tingly. Also I lost significant strength in my Tricep and chest exercises. For recent treatment I have completely rested for two weeks, Ive been icing and heating the areas, and i have been taking an anti inflamatory. The pain is still there but not quite as strong. What do you believe is the problem and what is the best way that i can fix this? Thanx for your time

When the scapula is unstable on any bench press injury may result.
I would avoid heat, ice only; and get a Gonstead chiro exam, looking carefully at the upper thoracic spine and the posterior shoulder. The doc should be able to adjust the scapula if need be.

Hello...I started feelling pain in my right shoulder a couple of years ago for a few days following my shoulder workout. It wasn't a typical soreness pain but almost a skeletal pain, like it was under the top portion of my deltoid. It only hurt (at the time) post workout. The pain went away as my lifting heaviness decreased, but while I was overseas this last year and was lifting a lot and intensely it came back even worse. The most painful (where it felt like my shoulder completely came out of socket) was when I lifted an empty barbell off a bench to move it and it was a little to far away from my body. I took the last few months off of lifting upon return from service to try to let it heal, but to no avail. I'm doing a ton of warm up sets and movements to warm up the joint and muscle, but it doesn't work either. The pain typically hurts on any military press movements (barbell worse than d-bell), lateral d-bell raises, and incline bench press (barbell worse than d-bell). I wouldn't rate the normal pain as extremely intense, 2 of 10 when not lifting (and irritated), 3-4 of 10 when lifting, but it's there and annoying. There are a few other exercises that bother it, but those are the big ones. I've tried changing arm positions when lifting, focusing on form, even random exercises...nothing works. Maybe you can suggest something?

Do Codman's exercise:
Take a very light dumbbell 1-2 lbs to start. Keep thumb pointed toward your hip as you slightly rotate your arm as the dumbbell hangs by your side (very slight circular motion). You should feel a slight circular motion of your arm in the socket.
Look into a chiropractic adjustment. Near assuredly you have a T3 disc problem. you may also need the arm set superiorward to approximate in the glenohumeral joint.

i dont have insurance and am thinking about going to chiro and paying cash but i am not sure if they would be able to help... About 4 months ago i tripped and it pretty much felt like everything inside my body was ripped off my chest wall, i had trouble breathing and ended up in the hospital and they told me it was a torn muscle, gave me muscle relaxers and sent me home...i have pulled muscles before and this pain was completely different and alot more intense... the majority of the pain is gone but there is a weird sore/uncomfortable sensation that runs from my spine along my rib... it still hurts the whole way from spine around to the front along my rib when i take a deep breath... the other day i was poking around and realize that they rib that hurts is pushed in about a half inch and seems to be laying on top of the rib below it... my question is.. is it possible to dislocate a rib or for it to move? would a chiropractor be able to pop it back in if it was out? do they usually take xrays to see whats going on?

I had a friend that was having these mysterious arm/shoulder pains like yours and he saw a chiropractor and one of his ribs was seated improperly and after an adjustment of some kind he saw an immediate decrease in pain. and eventually it went away. do you do any streching for your shoulders? like overhead shoulder dislocations ? ive found those to work really well.

About 5 years ago I was in a car wreck that injured my neck and back. I was on bed rest for 8 weeks and could barely walk for about 3 weeks. While going through physical therapy for over a year the doctors told me that my sacrum was tilted due to the muscles in my lower back and butt being strained, pulled, and notted up. The Doctors tried many things while I was in therapy, shock treatment (on my lower back), heat treatment, and core wraps. They also gave me exercises to do saying they would stretch out the muscles that were pulled. With in six months I gained around 45 pounds. By the time I was back to normal (somewhat) I had gained 60 lbs. Like I said it has been 5 years. I still have problems with my back. I can walk fine and do some excercises.
My question is... Is there anything in addition to stretching and trying to strengthen my lower back and core that will help take the pain away? Could the increase in my weight be part of the problem? I have been taking pain relievers for 5 years now, non stop-almost everyday. I just don't want my lower back to stop me from continuing to lose weight.

Any advice?
oziem
You may remember my post above. Well I've been to see a chiropracter ... finally.
I paid ?45 ($92 usd) which is about average in the UK. Anyway, explained all my problems:
1. really stiff/sore back when running after only 6-8 minutes
2. when sitting down my upper back gets quite stiff
3. my hip clicks on my right leg when I am lying down and raise the leg up and lower it.
Anyway, the chiropracter examined me, and said there were not many problems wrong with my back, only very minor stuff. The only thing the chiro. found was that my hips were slightly dis-aligned, but she pulled my leg and pushed on it to re-align it.
Anyway, cut the long story short, I don't really feel any benefit at all. She said I may have a bit of pain afterwards - like the next day, but nothing. She has sent emailed me some stretches to do, as she said my left hamstring seemed tighter than the right and that could be leading t the problems.
I am booked in again next week. Really annoyed as I don't feel like anything has changed.
Just thought I would vent my frustrations! :-(

You have to discuss instrument adjusting rationale with your doctor and those that do that.
I advocate hands on adjusting.

Why not correct the misalignment of the sacrum? A force moved it out of place, a specific one should move it back into place. Once adjusted you could do some exercise for "therapy" but you need to fix what is damaged first. Sacrum responds quickly to adjustment. The pain and your hindrance to weight meaintenance should be resolved that route.

If in any way possible you see a Gonstead doc, or meet them at the college for seminar you should get some results. That is the highly recommended path to take.

So would I have to go back to the physical therapist, or to a chiropractor to get my sacrum fixed? Will it hurt me more if I exercise before I get it fixed? What happens if I never do fix it?

I recommend Gonstead chiropractic for its excellent record of correction of these problems.
You should walk if you are able to do so.
A subluxation of the sacrum is a potentially degenerative artritic condition. You would do well to get it fixed rather than allow it to worsen.

Hello, I have been experiencing some bad/continuous pains in my latissimus dorsi and what seems to be my rear deltoid/teres major area. This pain has been with me for about two weeks now and I know for a fact that it isn't a tear. I have been to a doctor already, but she said to hold off on the MRI. I was sick prior to this pain for one week and was in bed pretty much everyday for around 8-11 hrs a day and did not lift once during the sickness! I got rid of the fever after a week and now this muscle pain/constant ache has been with me for two weeks. I am using Ibuprofen to take down the slight inflamation and using ICYHOT to help with the muscles, but it seems like it just won't go away. Also, I haven't lifted ONCE in this whole three week spectrum. I'm guessing it was just simply from laying on it wrong while sleeping one night. Does this normally happen to people? Do you think it is possibly just a strain or sprain? And any remedies?
Thank you in advance!!

Two things here; two weeks constant pain that is unresponsive. The pain cam subsequent to fever (related or no?)
My thinking is oyu have a sprain. The scapula can actually subluxate without major rotator cuff tear. T-nation has an interesting article on this.
Anyway, I would be checking the thoracic spine and scapula for subluxation and adjustment would be the course of care. Once corrected proper warmup and training of the area would be advised.

So I've had this nagging pain in my left trap, (middle trap, not the top area) that seems to bother me anytime I turn the wrong way. I've already seen a chiropractor and she cracked my back and massaged it by a week later the pain has barely subsided at all. What could be causing this? anytime i raise my left arm over my head or bend over at the waist it seems to hurt. Any tips?

There have been a few entries on this issue. If there is no lasting value to the thoracic spine or scapula and turning is an issue creating pain, end especially spasm;
the answer is an upper cervical adjustment. A subluxation should be carefully searched for in that region and especially the occipital condyle. If that problem is present, an adjustment will bring relief.

The pain is really sharp and early in the day it was like a electric shock all the way down my arm to my hand really wierd. I have already decided to take a week off from upper body training and i will but i would like to know what you thinki it might be.
I traind hard on my last upper body workout on saturday and everything went smooth so it's really wierd that it hurts

i have a problem, i describe what happened :
16 days ago i was doing deadlift i had 8 singles , one each minute, with this progression, in kilograms: 135 135 135 160 160 160 140 140
i have a very balanced phisique, always took in consideration deep core work, so this is not the problem..
the problem is that i tried a new technique to stabilize the lower back , keeping much air inside the diafram at each rep, but i did not keep the belly button inside as usually was doing in the past . the lift was in my possibility and i completed it with great perfusion in the glutes area..it felt very sollicitated... completed the first rep with 160 kg (my body weight is 72 kilos, 174 cm height)i felt a pain in the sciatic nerve..i completed all the planned reps.. then i went prone on the ground for some mc kenzie extensions. and then rubbed with the ball for trigger points...and some stretch..i completed workout with 105 x8 reps good morning and 10 reps romanian deadlifts with dumbells, not very heavy because of the sensation in the glute
i had pain at home in the glute...a bit down the leg in some cases..i was very aggresses on treating trigger points in glute piriformis ql psoas etc...
i then went 4 days later for a front squat workout and i had no pain doing 3 triples with 105 kg and 8 reps with 80 kg... then i did pistols and i had again some disconfort in the sciatic nerve...
after 4 days i went to a chiro..it was one year i did not go (never suffered with back before...2 years i seriously and heavily squat and deadlift..i love them)
after the chiro i was 2 days good doing always mc kenzie extensions during the day etc...but when i woke up in the morning ..little barely felt..mild sensation in the sciatic after those 2 days..i had a wonderful chest back (inverted row) workout..then i get back..yesterday to deadlift.. i was stupid i know.... i decided to continue with the progression
it was planned 3 singles, one each minute with 140 kilos and 4 singles with 165 kilos and 3 singles with 150 kilos...
i did the first 3 singles with 140..one each minute and i was ok...
then...it arrived the 165 kilos...i was 2 inch off the ground and my back seriously sudddendly contracted from the side of the previous problem...left side...immediately over the cheek
i immediately gave up and went in to mckenzie..then flushin some blood with reverse bw extensions at the lumbar bench...then go home
and here...terrible pain(VERY EMPHASIZED BY EMOTIONS OF BEING FAR FROM TRAINING) since yesterday..also in the groIn..with affected motility..rumors in the belly... i had to urinate more frequently..actually it is disturbing the pain int he groin still on the left..yesterday at home the leg was not so focus..obviously a disc...when i read about problems with the bladder i had a panic attac i not even know how remained standing...
i have pain standing..i think mc kenzie also are not good now..also i think i made a mistake in starting again aggressive on trigger poiints..i put ice..terrible pain...i slept keeping the arch in the lumbar area with a towel...now is better but the groin is most of the problem..i thought about the psoas..i treated triggers..it is not tense...actually everything looks switched off(NO INNERVATION)..glutes , some part of low back muscles ..i was worried like hell though..emotional..but i know EFT to control this and i did the better i could...
i think i need an mri
what to do..advices..i also have a video of the lift and when i gave up
i tend to pop in my knees because i think some spasm are releasing so the body is adjusting..
it is less pain then yesterday..in the back mostly...also in the groin...but if i think it is worst..need to be calm and propositive
i am scared like hell because deadlift transformed my phisique and i love them..looking at the video yesterday comparing it with previous, i notice as i was always use to stay lower with the hips...a bit higher then the knees...while now they are very higher..i did not realize in this last month i changed technique..it is still ok , it is more like a powerlifting deadlift...first was closer to the squat..but... first was safer because i was always arched in the back keeping lordosis..now i am straight, not curved, but not arched with enphasized lordosis and this ****ed me
i just keep a week of break ..it was time to deload also...then i hope i can at least do upper body and then go back little by little, maybe some squats..i think deadlifts are over for long.. i will start doing core work as soon as i feel i can do it..when?
i usually do 4 kneeling multifidi work, side bridging, tva activations (tummy tuck), planks, woodchop, russian twist..i have a very strong core..)but was not enough...other thing..when i had the first injury i was in a gym where the floor is not perfectly level...it was a car office..and they did not straight the floor..damn it..i always chosen the straigther part..bringing a level with me..it was the only gym with weights..here in this ****in italian town where i live
also being in this ****in italian country i cannot access soft tissue therapy, art etc that would complement chiropractic the best as i could when i was living in LA
http://youtube.com/watch?v=BGtFnbhEGaU video of the injury, yesterday
http://youtube.com/watch?v=7qU8PLIJfys video of my previous technique...never had a problem..i was also in another correct gym, but i had to leave it when it became fitness oriented

it is going a bit better after doing 2 setsx10 of quadruped multifidi, 10 seconds each rep, keeping also the belly button inside..
and mckenzie extensions any 2 hours..
i start being fully prone face down for 3-4 minutes..then i go 3-4 min on my elbows., then i straight my arms and make 10 reps up and down..in this last portion i noticed how the sciatic discomfort reappears..it is not an escrushating pain but it is discomfort..that should not be there obviously..
the muscles over the sacrum are still a bit spasmic..while i treated by hands the lower abdominals , the intrapelvic and the QL with the theracane
i am feeling much more better than yesterday..i have no more hurge of urinating..i normalized that..some discomfort in the groin..that i dunno what is..if it is psoas or simply nerve irritation by the disc..dunno if caused by the fact i just did mckenzie protocol or because i am sitting...
i look forward to take my stability ball at grandpa house and use that for sitting then

so ive noticed that i have a very unbalanced back (left side a lot more developed than the other). also, my right shoulder never stops popping when doing bench press with barbells and dumbbells and sometimes shoulder press. when doing military press with dumbbells, i feel the right side of my back (latissimus dorsi) get used more than my right shoulder which i don't know why. when i do bench press i feel very uneven on the bench (probably from my uneven back) and then my shoulder pops when i do the exercise. now ive been told that my shoulder problem was possibly from having weak external rotator cuff muscles. ive been doing external rotator cuff exercises for a month now and know improvement. could i be suffering this shoulder problem due to the right side of my back being less underdeveloped than the left side? ive never done deadlift before but im going to do it for the first time today and im just worried that the more developed side of my back will do most of the work further increasing my problem.

no more swelling in the area..after 10 mckenzie extensions during the day, pain is almost centralized..sometimes i feel the sciatic...muscles are regaining tone int he glutes..still some pain on pressure in that area..and if i make some motion that changes lordosis..some spasm still happens.

hi
so suddenly today my left shoulder hurts... It's not a big pain i would say like a 4/10, it hurts mainly in the back rear delt but also hurts in the front of my shoulder at times. The pain is really sharp and early in the day it was like a electric shock all the way down my arm to my hand really wierd. I have already decided to take a week off from upper body training and i will but i would like to know what you thinki it might be.
I traind hard on my last upper body workout on saturday and everything went smooth so it's really wierd that it hurts
you can have a temporary impingement with heavy lifts and questionable form.

Your joint and muscle is malnourished of proper nerve supply. T3 up to the upper cervical should be examined carefully for an impinged nerve.

I just posted a thread about this but anyway thought I'd ask for your opinion
About two months ago doing straight legged dead lifts with 100kgs I strained the middle part of my back. Been meaning to go to the doctor for the whole period, i stopped training due to a pinching pain and a sore back from the above injury.
Anyway I finally saw the doctor today, turns out where the lower back meets the upper back I've torn inside the spinal column and it's a permanent injury. Scar tissue will form around it and the pain will dull over time but it'll always be there. I asked about working out to which he was very thingy about it but after thinking he said I'll always have to be mindful of it and not put unneccsary strain on it.
Any idea what I can to strengthen the area so I can continue to work out? The doctor wasnt very helpful.

sorry, i don t know what this means
please give me. if you have, any advice, so that i can get back in training soon
i do not have access to gonstead techniques in italy. the farther i can go now is uk
but i must be sure of what i do and that it will bring solution!
p.s. do you know why i have , some moments, this slight discomfort in the groin? somethimes on the left..sometimes on the right? it is not steady..it happens at the moments..then it goes away...
i sneezed now...i felt less spasm(almost nothing) in the lower back..yesterday was much more...tonight when i was moving in the bed i had the spasm if i was also for a while losing lordosis...i sleept all the time with a support under lower back to mantain the arch
it is good if i start treating for trigger points or not?
also i have harmstring that are a bit tight..i need to stretch them, but any position put me in a bad back position..maybe the only one is if i lay down on the floor..any advice?
thank you for what you will tell me

You are doing all the right things you are able. Perhaps your doc may look into this subject and be able to do it for you. Now mind you I have not seen the problem just have readup on your take of the case management and its progress. The lateral xray will tell-- is the disc wide in the posterior or no, if it is the sacrum is the answer. If L5 is behind the sacrum (a mm or two) and tipped downward in the posterior, the L5 is the ticket.

Hello I ruptured a disc in my neck C 6-7 , Happened around a month ago, Since then been having headaches and dizziness. Neurosurgeon said he didn't think surgery was necessary. Just started going to the chiropractor and my doctor has me on a 10 pound lifting limit, Any advice when I might be able to hit the weights again ?? And possibly any exercises I can do for strengthening or helping the problem ?? Thanks

I am thankful your MD said so.
I think your DC would agree that six weeks after total correction is acheived would be the prognosis. How long that will take your doc will tell. Once you are fixed, simple light extension stretches would be advised. You do not "strengthen" discs.

hey i posted earlier about my left shoulder. Well it got better for about 3 weeks and now this morning about 2-3 hours ago i dropped the bar on my chest benching. If it matters my bench has not gone up and all my other lifts have, and my shoulders feel like they're fraying when i do a shoulder press or clean and press, stuff of the sort. My other lifts are skyrocketing. What could be the problem? My dad doesn't have shoulder problems but he did tear both of his rotator cuffs. I'm thinking of taking a week off of lifting, what should my diet be like? I'm eating 3200-3500 to maintain

I go to the chiropractor for shoulder tendonitis. He says it's common and it's right where the bicep meets the shoulder. I'm tired of being in pain and am no longer covered by my benefits to see the chiro. SHould I go to my doctor and get a cortizone injection in my shoulders? He did one in my wrist and it's felt great.

That tendon may be worked on manually. That works very well. A DC or an LMT may be able to adjust or massage it. Cortizone is a last ditch effort and may make you more likely to reinjure in the future.
These problems are usually due to form issues--look into your lifting form.
Just an update on my situation.
Had something going on in my C7 that was causing numbness in my entire arm.
Been going to the Chrio who has been great, very lightly working that area. Also gives me some traction treatment and been doing a bit on my own.
He recommended anti inflammatories, which surprised me. So, got a second opinion with a professional sports therapist, who basically said all the same things my chiro did. But, the ST said it would be at least a 10 week recovery and 14 weeks was more of an accurate average. I'm approaching week 5 since diagnosis.
Am on nyproxin, which is some strong stuff. LEaves me a bit dopey. But, finally after a week of it, and treatments, I'm finally starting to see some improvement. My left bicep was mushy and wouldn't contract. As of late, been feeling it more and contracts better. Still have the occasional headache.

Make sure you are breathing correctly during your sets and that your neck posture is neutral. If it continues thereafter then your neck may be worth checking.

should i continue with ice? i stopped it at the present moment

Hello Ozeim, Ive hurt my lower back when I deadlifted something heavy about 3 months ago. Pain has gone down since then but went to a chiropractor the other day since the pain hasn't gone completely away.He took x rays and told me that one hip was higher then the other causing a pinch nerve and something about my sacrum not being straight or something like that. Anyways he told me I need 36 visits (3 times a week) to completely have my back like brand new. Ive gone for about 6 visits and the pain hasn't even gone away. The problem is my insurance doesn't cover and at $40 the visit I'm starting to think if I should continue going. The pain isn't that bad and only hurts when I bend over or lean back alot. But he told me that further deadlifting and squatting would be out the picture. So my question do you think 36 visits is normal to fix a lower back problem like mine? And after my last adjustment my back has felt better but not perfect.
Thanks for the help Appreciated

Firstly we ought be thankful the doc is helping you. Chiropractic works!
I can not comment on the doc's methodology.
I can tell you that I expect a sacrum correction in far less visits with Gonstead technique.

If the chiro works why has he not fixed it in 10 months. It's definatly better but seems only a short term fix when he adjusts me.
They are not caused from lifting form. They are caused from trying to do pullups.

The disc protrudes from improper alignment resulting in poor biomechanics. That is is never resolved by surgery. The disc will protrude again eventually.
The good news is it is not too late to alter the position and mechanics of the disc with a chiropractic adjustment.
There must be no twisting involved in the procedure; therefore the Gonstead adjustment is proven to be an effective procedure post-surgical.

Hips or sacroiliacs? These pops are stress compensation noises. There is a problem elsewhere. I don't think it is the legs b/c one side would take the brunt not both. 95% sure there is nerve inflammation between T12-S2, probably the L5 is cranky and referring the swelling to the "hips".

whatever the area is called right under my waist. my left leg is longer than my right by 0.25 inch i think and when i stand with both of my feet together its quite obvious because the left side of my hip sticks out a lot more than my right.

For you and everyone else here the way to tell what the probelm is and how to fix it is simply a patient exam and standing x-ray. Gonstead analysis factors in short leg measurements to the millimeter and accounts for pelvis distortion as well.

http://www.alignmed.com/images/Posture.jpg
If the posture problem is the result of:
compensation to pelvis distortion
spinal distortion due to cord pressure
scoliosis due to disc pressure
or an acute fracture
the chiropractic adjustment may have a correction to this effect.
Orthotics and stretches may help more minor posture issues.

Pain in left side of neck & rear shoulder blade.
Just got back from a chiro visit. This dr. took an x-ray of my neck & chest. Other 2 dr. i have seen in the past ( one used ice & tens) other used ultrasound & aligning. Previous 2 dr. never x-ray'd me.
This dr. showed my my x-rays, said i have a (weightlifters, military neck) my neck looks like a 2x4, no bend at all.
Have you treated any one with this same condition?
When can i expect pain relief? How long am i in this for? Money is kind of an object, but my health, pain free is #1.
Thank you for your time

I have seen several hundred cases of this. Now mind you I use Gonstead method. Our approach is specific correction of subluxation (not focusing merely on gross posture distortion).
In my office we expect massive pain relief within four visits for most people.
I have seen a military neck correct in one adjustment, and some never. My neck was broke 20 years ago; as of this year you could not tell. I had a reverse curve and it its now 95% to optimal. I have never had traction etc. It just took a long while to get the right bone in place for me.
If the right disc or pelvic bone is adjusted your neck may be fixed.
I should remark about 50% (my estimate) is the kyphotic neck is not caused by C5 but rather Occiput, or upper thoracic or rotation of pelvis.
There you go sir,
O

I have a reoccurring problem with my low back/hip. Most of the time it will happen for no obvious reason - like bending over to pull a weed. It feels like I pull a muscle on the right side of my upper hip near the low back (if that makes any sense). It usually takes 2 or 3 weeks to recover. The pain can be anywhere from mild to severe(especially at first). During this time I have a hard time sitting say in a tub and straightening my legs without pain in the low back on the right side. Any thoughts? Maybe old age ;-)
Thanks

The pain can be anywhere from mild to severe(especially at first). During this time I have a hard time sitting say in a tub and straightening my legs without pain in the low back on the right side. Any thoughts? Maybe old age ;-)
Thanks
i had something similar recently together with a disc... it should be a not properly functional quadratus lumborum...i did a lot of trigger point therapy and fixed..
today after 10 days i got back on deadlifts and i had no problems..i used less weight though...2x6 @126 kilos to start..and they were fine..i got back to my originary style, with the hips only a bit higher than the knees , so a more squat like deadlift, if compared with the day of the injury

Considering this part of your body is as old as the rest...
Again, likely disc. Possibly SI.
The danger of letting this come and go for long periods is decay over time which leads to greater neuropathology.
The adjustment is corrective.

Hi there, I have recently been diagnosed with Scapular Dyskinesis and was wondering what exercises I should do to strengthen my scapular stabilizers and work on my cuff strength? I can't and won't do really much of anything for my upper body until I build up my back strength and my shoulder blade returns back to normal again. Thanks for all your help!!

Hey Oz, could you tell me what a back ligament injury is supposed to feel like and how it could be diagnosed?
I feel this undefined dull pain in my right upper to middle back mainly when I rest. It's very dull, it's not even a pain, more of a uncomfortable sensation, and it's not confined to any particular spot. It doesn't affect me when I'm in motion or work out, so the doctor I saw thought it may be a ligament injury, but he didn't do any tests. He said these typically take up to 6 weeks to heal and that I should continue with all daily activities, including training as usual. The thing is, he was very unexperienced when it comes to sports-related injuries and I sort of guided him through all the time (based on what I read on the Internet) and I was the one who suggested that it may be a ligament injury, which he accepted as a likely possibility.
It's been some 4 weeks now and the feeling is still there, basically with the same (low) intensity. I don't know if I should do anything further at this stage. What if it's not a ligament, but rather than a nerve injury or something of other nature? How can one be sure? And unlike a muscle injury, I can't tell when and how I hurt myself.
Will visiting a chiropractor be of help in my case?

It does take 6 weeks for ligaments/cartilage to maintain after an injury but the problem lies in if the tissue remains in malposition then you will have chronicity issues. A chiropractor may be able to help you. If you seek out an ethical specific chiropractor who offers you an exhaustive consultation you will get answers.
You may read on the links below how Gonstead protocol analyzes ligamentous injury.

A measure of DOMS is normal after squats and deads but in your case it sounds as if that disc could use some work. If you are stretching, using good form, and icing when needed, obviously chiro is essential for you (and about everybody).

Well.. For the past few months.. I have had a pretty back left hip problem in my SI joint. This is managable. Yesterday, I was doing sprints. I exploded out of my sprinting stance and I felt a weird/sharp pulling in my right hip along my waist line in the back and a little on the side. The muscles are tight and sore. I did not stretch much last night as I have read that stretching a pull is a bad idea.. and I didnt not know what it was.
No problem twisting or turning except to the right side it is a little sore.
Not much at all radiating down my right leg... mostly in back, front hip and a LITTLE tingle in my quad.
Hurts to just sit here.
Hurts to bend down to get soemthing but only in certain positions.
Hurts to lean forward if sitting in a chair.

The pelvis is a girdle. If you do not correct a sprained SI the opposite side will overwork and also eventually may become problematic.

Two things; 1) What are your feelings on using X-ray to diagnose chiro probs, I heard that most chiros are taught to diagnose by feel not X-Ray? 2) I have seen a few people have S/S of stroke and had actual hemiplegia after a neck adjustment, what is going on here that would cause this and is it preventable? Thanks

1) you may be able to find your way from the wilderness without a compass, map or GPS but why? X-rays are an invaluable tool.
2) Not an adjustment. Perhaps a manipulation with severe violent rotation and extension but even these have not been sufficiently documented. In 50 years there has not been one stroke associated with a Gonstead cervical adjustment. I always teach students never to rotate the spine.
BTW- not that I am advocating it (I am against rotary moves) massage therapists, MD's, DO's, barbers. witch doctors, PT's, chiros have done rotary break moves for 2000 years and no one has complained until 20 years ago. And they are done more than ever now. An OB is doing a similar move on nearly every childbirth. Studies show many babies are hurt by this but the moves are being used extensively.
Look into the Gonstead cervical adjustment is a masterwork of health care.

I have an acute ACL tear that i'll need surgery for, I'll be seeing my Sports medicine doc this week for the follow up on the MRI.
I'm wearing a composite brace on my knee and can walk (or hobble ha).
Would you think it'd be ok to still get in the gym doing upper body mostly and straight knee rowing (my knees strapped in and no pressure on them) for cardio.
I'll be out for 6 weeks+ just want to get in SOMETHING that has no direct involvement and doesn't put pressure on my knee.
Appreciate it.

Hi Oz,
I have another ailment I wouldn't mind getting your input/advice on....I'll try and paint you a picture...
I get sharp pain just superior and slightly lateral to the cubital fossa of my right elbow (my guess is that its the long head of biceps tendon) with certain movements. There is similar pain along what appears to be the lateral border of the cubital fossa too. There is also tenderness at these two sites. I have full range of motion of my elbow and of my wrist. There is slight pain with passive pronation but no pain with passive supination. There is pain with active supination and only pain at end-point pronation. Barbell curls, concentration curls, incline db curls and hammer curls all elicit sharp pain both above and below the elbow. When I perform these exercises it feels like the strain is on the tendon and barely on the muscle itself when I compare it to the health side. No/minimal pain with preacher curls. Could you offer a diagnosis and or rehab plan for this? Thanks for your help.

Sounds as if you strained a triceps tendon but I cannot be sure. I would look into rest and massage directly in the area but chiro to be sure no ulnar nerve contribution is inflamed.

Great thread Doc, thanks for taking the time to do this.
I injured my back a couple years ago doing deadlifts with improper form/too much weight and have always had slight lower back pain ever since, whether its running, kickboxing, wrestling, or even riding the bike. Sitting for longer then 30 minutes since that injury causes me a lot of pain in my lower back, regardless of the position I use. Just recently, about 2 months ago, I was doing DL's again and felt a pop in my lower back, followed by excruciating pain. Ive been slowly seeing a sports chiro who works in my gym but I need to get in there more frequently. The problem is the pain isn't subsiding at all. I'm addicted to lifting, and the idea of completely avoiding the gym is out of the question for me unless absolutely necessary. Squats, military presses, upright cable rows even curls gives me severe lower back pain and my sciatica flares up to the point where I can barely walk.
I've avoided doing all compression exercises (squats, military press etc) but I keep tweaking the injury by minor things such as bending over to tie my shoelaces or pulling a gallon of milk out of the fridge.... such minor things will send me into a sever throbbing pain originating in my lower back on the left side of my spine, but very close to it, and shooting down my left glute and into my thigh. I know thats the psiatic nerve right?
What can I do on my own to alleviate this pain? Im going to start increasing the frequency of my chiro visits to at least 3 times a week. Im getting desperate. Im currently going to school fulltime and dont have medical insurrance so xrays/mri is not possible at the moment.
Is there anything I can do in the meantime to increase stability and reduce this constant pain? I've been sleeping on the floor everynight for the last 2 months which has helped significantly and avoided sitting at the computer or sitting in general whenever possible. Anything else you could recommend would be greatly appreciated Doc.
Thanks again for your time.

Here it is: Seeing you have a lumbar posterior disc protrusion only a deep P-A adjustment will reposition the nucleus of the disc. You must find a Gonstead doc to set that disc. You need to eventually be set in a prone position to fix the problem. Sooner the better. I have nothing else to recommend because this is it.

Thanks for getting back to me so quick, Ill look into that asap.
I recently purchased an inversion table which feels like it temporarily relieves pressure on my back but my psiatic fires afterwards. Also, hanging from a pullup bar and letting my back relax has a similar effect but I get a similar pain after I release from the position... should I avoid these types of stretches and should I also be avoiding lifting at all until I get this adjustment?
Thanks Doc

Sunday I did lifting for back/bi, and Monday I did just an hour of cardio and now today it is back again and sooo uncomforatble. I can't sit still and there is pain in my shoulder.
Did I pinch a nerve in my shoulder? Is this something for a specialist doctor? chiroprator? My family doctor i have been trying to get an appointment with has not called me back, but they may not be who i want to see.

Dr Oziemmm, I have a disorder known as snapping triceps syndrome as I'm sure you are pretty familiar with. However it's an uncommon disorder so I can't find much info on it, and after talking with my doc he could only suggest seeing an ortho. From what I have been able to find online, even many ortho's aren't too familiar with it and they can only resolve to doing surgery, which I do not want to at this point since my arms are generally healthy and there is no pain from this problem. The only thing that bugs me is that I cannot exericse my arms in fear of the problem getting worse.
I can see the tendon of the medial triceps snap over the medial epicondyle when I flex my arm beyond 90 degrees, and have done all the stretching, soft tissue work I could by myself because from what I read it could be due to a hypertrophied/shortened tendon or synovium (?). My main question is, is there still hope in this problem recovering without surgery? I'm doing everything I can to try to help this problem, but there just seems to be not enough familiarity with this problem among the general public. Thanks for listening.

Above all you need to take 6-10 weeks off moves involving the triceps. No presses etc.
In conjunction:
1. See a chiro for care of the lower neck. C6-T4 there is a disc problem present on one of those. Ulnar nerve tone must be optimal for the tendon health, repair and overall function.
2. See a Neuromuscular Massage Therapist (such as St. John method) who will rigorously work the tendon as well as muscle.
3. Alternate ice and MOIST heat 20 minutes each.
4. Work up to the extreme triceps dumbbell stretch for 30 second intervals. (See Doggcrapp).
Do all of these steps. ALL. You should see serious results in 6 weeks. You should get some results within 2 but stick with it. Don't get your arm cut.
PS I had a severe triceps injury a year ago and I am now 100%.

Hello Oziem,
Im in physio therapy for the past 6 weeks for a winging scapula and dont see any improvements yet. I also had a nerve conduction study performed to see if I have a long thoratic nerve palsy but havent recieved the results yet.
Do you have any suggestions in regards to chiropractic treatment for a winging scapula? I also get bad shoulder impingement (long head biceps tendon/ rotator cuff pinching) because of the winging and there is no solid base for my shoulder to work from.
Any advice?

I would definitely look to the spine. Any sort of paralysis is spinal or spinal nerve related that is a given. Once your nerve is free to conduct to the muscle then therapy will be most advantageous.
My experience is spinal adjustment, then scapula adjustment, then exercise is the course of care.

hey Oz I had one more question. Reading this article on snapping of the elbow, http://www.jbjs.org.uk/cgi/reprint/60-B/1/56.pdf, it says that medial head actually separates from the 'muscle belly' of the triceps, along with the other conclusions drawn from the patients' examinations. Based on reading this, would you say conservative treatment would definitely work?

Hi Oz. I never saw this thread before until today. You are so nice and generous for helping all these people. I have a problem:
On monday, I did various chest and tricep exercises because I plannd on starting a program on Monday, and had never done half of the exercises before. I decided to test some weights out.
A few days later, I noticed my fingertips were getting a little numb. I would wake up, and thought I was just sleeping on my arm or hand. Now, the numbness is till there (only the fingers and thumb), my elbow slightly hurts, and my upper forearm hurts. This is all on my left side.
I think I got it from pullovers or skullcrushers. I have been reading about it and been seeing a lot of stuff about the ulner nerve. Does this sound correct? What can be done? I have been taking anti-inflammatories, although the pain is very minor.

hey Oz I had one more question.
Intermittent disclocation?????????
Either it is or isn't. At any rate there is neuritis. I would get that fixed and see how the muscle naturally adapts. Even if you sewed it together you have no assurance the muscle will ever move normally.
I would get the neck and radius adjusted and then train accordingly. See where that takes you. Surgery should always be last ditch. Surgery is rather permanent.

Yepper; did the sam myself some time ago sorry to say.
In the future warmup and ramp up in weight. The skullcrusher is extremely precarious on the elbow.
I suggest you do no arm work for two weeks and ice for 20 minutes x3 day.
You may not like hearing that, but I continued lifts and it took 10 weeks to get it fixed later on so do your self the favor now.
Yes the ulnar nerve, perhaps the triceps and the ulna itself may be injured.

try alternatiing ice and moist heat. Do low intensity stretches and lay off legs for at least a week. If the pain persists take longer off. You tear something down there you will never be quite the same so take it easy.
If someone can lightly traction the calcaneus, you will know immediately if that helps or hurts.
a massage may be recommended.

Safest bet is no arm work. Anything extending the Triceps should be avoided that should include presses.

I had upper back pain, mostly in my scapulas, for several months and it slowly just went away a few weeks ago. However, now the muscles running from my neck the the top-outside of my shoulders are sore/tired constantly. It is most felt in my traps but my neck and outside-top shoulders occasionally feel bad as well.
Is this just weakness that will correct itself with weight/muscle gain (I had lost weight unhealthily before these pains)?
Should I be shoulders traps/shoulder exercises?
Thanks

Symptoms change as tissue damage becomes more chronic. Weakness is not expressed in constant pain for months. Before trying some exercise cure make sure you know what the problem is first. I suggest you find some professional, DC, LMT, PT whatever and try to determine what is wrong there. I would think you have a bad mid back and perhaps concomitant upper cervical problem. If you resolve the spinal issue invariably you will have more ease and strength in a given affected area.
I have had to repeatedly address the erroneous notion that exercise alone fixes disc and ligament sprains. It just isn't so folks. You need to correct damaged soft tissue back to juxtaposition then do your therapy etc. This is why manipulation and massage have been around 2000 years.

For about three weeks now I've had a burning (annoying) sensation in my back between my shoulder blades and slightly lower. Very uncomfortable. I find myself constantly stretching my back and pushing on my chest to make my back crack. Ibuprophen seems to help. Any thoughts? Btw ... it is worse when I do squats and dls. Thanks

Hi there... hopefully you can provide some professional insight here.
About 7 weeks ago I was knee'd in the ribs sparring. We weren't supposed to be throwing knees, but I guess the guy that did it got a little anxious, so it took me a bit by suprise. Usually I'm a bit more tensed up to brace for that stuff.
Anyway, I still am unable to grapple. The knee hit me on my left side, a bit lower and to the left of my heart. If I push inward under my left armpit, I can feel dull pain through that half of my rib cage.
If you were to look at my rib cage head on, while I was arching my back to expand my ribs, you'd see where I was hit almost looks like a ball, something sticking out. I'd say the lump is an inch and a half in diameter.
Xrays showed no fracture, so I'm not sure what this could be and why it is still around. I have been to a.r.t. and chiro and they also seem a little baffled as to why it is still like this.
Any insight is appreciated.

The shoulder needs to be set ASAP and look carefully for a swollen disc likely at T3 or T4 but could be as high as C6. Gonstead chiropractic or someone on this par should be consulted for correcting herniated discs and minor dislocation.
The sooner you tend to it the better the prognosis.

Firstly you ought (in my opinion if I may) be very concerned about the disc and nerves of the area. With every bony fracture of a joint there is always some cartilage and ligament damage. I would have advised you see a chiro at point of injury and certainly now as well.
I cannot foresee any restrictions of exercise though you ought to strongly consider avoiding axial loading; jumping, squats, military press (anything with overhead or on the shoulder weights). Hack squats db presses would be preferred. Your knees and kidneys may or may not have been affected, I would keep an eye on them as well.

Be midful that posture is controlled mstly by bone and disc shape moreso than muscle tone.
The most profitable exercise/stretch is one that activates the core; the diaphragmatic crux to be exact activating this muscle and fascia as well as rectus abdominus and rectus femoris.
Extension of the body in a standing or prone position is how this is acheived.
Do a search on Egoscioue. They are big on posture exercise. Also Pilates.

**I know it is important to get a actuall checkup, I just cant afford it at all right now.**
Okay. I got one for you.
I have been working out pretty heavy over the past year, and have made great gains and put on alot of mass.
Now, onto my back problem (Feels like L5). I didnt hurt it whille lifting. In fact, if i were to go deadlift 400lbs right now, i probably wouldnt feel a thing.
I can also walk around perfectly fine for a couple of days without it "the pain". In fact, before this last episode i hadnt had a problem for about a month.
The pain usually comes on when i bend over to pick up something such as a paintbrush. I feel like i cant straighten up to walk, and immediatly want to hit the floor, so that it can loosen up again, allowing me to move.
I have to lay on my side bent, untill the pain starts to fade, and gently extend my legs. then in about 10 minutes i can get up and walk again.
Some cases are worse than others. Sometimes if the pain isnt too much, i can just pause for a minute and breathe it out. While other times, it will hurt to walk on my legs for the remainder for the day.
What is this???
History:
I think i had a herniated disk before at (T3). this was a couple of years ago, and i stopped working out for a couple of months, and followed up with extreem light weights. Once i got to build the muscles around the area again, i hadnt had a problem since.
This pain was more of a contstant pain, and didnt really work too much on my nerves. it just made me very restless, and it hurt to lift.
Contrast:
My current problem never hurts when i lift.
the pain is not constant.
and after a couple of months, it still acts up.
Conclusion: ????
What the heck is this bugger.
Im ready to start hitting the weights again...
Any help would be great.

Congratulations on your gains.
Your thinking of a disc problem is right.
Gonstead demonstrated that vertebral subluxation of the disc causes the vertebrae to tip backward. Therefore flexion not extension will cause more tearing of the chronically compressed posterior of the disc. Deads should not cause pain in most cases. However rows could. So bending forward is the most precarious move for those with "bad backs" and extension stretches and the like are recommended.
Gonstead docs always get the joint moved in adjustment while the spine is neutral or in a position of extension.
This is also why Pilates and other exercise programs which involve extension work well.
So between visits to the chiro you ought to extend the spine to maintain disc tone. All babies and quadropods (cats/dogs) naturally do this the moment they wake from sleep before getting going.

I appreciate your response so much. Thank you.
Unfortunatly, im not understanding too much of it.
Are you suggesting that it IS a disk problem, and not some weird type of pinched nerve?
And are you saying that pilates and perhaps yoga would be beneficial towards recovery?
And if it is a pinched nerve, is there anything to remedy that from home?
(btw. not that you care. but reps on recharge)
Thanks.

Disc problems do caused weird pinched nerves as you say. Chiropractors fix em (see my Gonstead info). If you are willing to pay for your health then that is the way to go.

oziem, first of all thanks for the thread youve helped a ton of people, very thoughtful!
my question is
a few years back i had a pretty bad seperated shoulder / ac joint and ended up requiring sergury
physical therapy and all that went fine, but ever since then i can really get my shoulder blade to stick out or w/e like the other one, and my back, especially mid back to work during exersizes that it should be. seems like all the work is being pushed to my left chest instead of back no matter how hard i concentrate on working the left part of my back.
im guessing that certain muscle are weakened and/or tendons injured close to the shoulder blade and that is causing this....any ideas?

Every severe AC separation I have seen had a T4 disc herniation to go with it. This could cause scapular problems and pectoralis issues as well. (chronic bronchitis, gall bladder disease, mitral valve issues also could follow).

I went to a chiropractor yesterday and evidently I have a strained right erector spinae muscle. This happened months ago when i was taking molding off of cabinets for my mom. All I did was move my arm then I couldn't move my body for 5 hours. I went to the hospital waited 2 hours and the doctor there said its probably a muscle thing and gave me a prescription for 4 ibu. Now I guess that caused a rotated vertebrae and misaligned rib because the muscle has never healed. I have soreness from the strained muscle and an acute pain from the vertebrae and rib. I'm only in Cleveland for less than a month and don't want to start treatments with the chiro I went to yesterday. I will be moving back to school in a month and would rather go to one chiro.
Any suggestions for exercises to do/not to do or even advice about whether or not to get treatment.
Also, if I had to rate the pain on the 1-10 scale it would be a 4-5 at most times when the pain is around.
I am 21 weigh 160 and fairly muscular.

It seemed to be my understanding that the reason the rib and vertebrae were out of place was because of the muscle.
To preface this, I am a college student doing an internship in Cleveland Ohio for this semester, in January I will be returning to Toledo Ohio.
Should I go through with whatever treatment they suggest?

No the vertebra does not remain out of place four months b/c of a muscle.
If you have concerns, once you find an ethical Gonstead chiro, run their suggested care plan with me by PM. I will let you know what I think. If you go with another methodology I will not have an opinion to offer.

Stretching alone will not acheive this goal. You need to correct the structural cause before re-educating soft tissue with stretches or weights. Your spine rounding is the result of disc and bone shape. The disc can be changed by adjustment.

I'm having issues with my delts, particularly my left front delt. They seem to be stiff and tight ALL the time. Even a couple minutes after some deep stretching. And lately I can't bench because I feel a dull pain in my left delt. I've been warming up and stretching very very well before benching but it still seems to hurt, even with close grip. What do you think could be going on here? Also my traps are often tight and stiff as well. I've also been told I have minor scoliosis in my lower back by a PT (not sure if that's important or not).
If you need to know anything else Ill be happy to go on some more.

If this is a new phenomenon you may just be overtraining some underdevloped musculature or compensations even to your scoliosis (if you indeed have that). Perhaps as or more likely you have a 5th cervical impingement (or thereabout). This could affect the traps and anterior deltoid tone. So on that note you might get a chiro eval. I trust the PT already evaluated your muscles.

Hi oziem,
I started lifting a few weeks ago and started getting a very achy lower back. This seemed to stem from squatting and any lift that required the spine to be in lumbar extension. I read an article that stated the majority of lower back aching was due to lack of movement, and therefore muscle imbalances.
That was the first problem, then while sitting at my pc I was extended back back to try and ease the aching and I lent back to my right and felt a sharp pain in the right side of my lower back. I now have a pain there, which is sort of at the top of the buttock and lower back region. It hurts when I lean back, feels like I'm leaning on a rock in my back.
The aching seemed to stop when this happened, although I haven't been training since because I suffered another injury the same day. Any advice will be appreciated.

Ozzy: You mentioned something that concerned me for your patients with respects to correcting an uneven pelvis. You said that you only know of adjustments to correct a functional short leg.
A lot of the time it can be corrected with glute activation exercises, and stretching of the lower back and abs, look into SIJD sacroiliac joint dysfunction/dislocation/syndrome. There are a couple of exercises people can do specifically for this
Im mentioning this because my chiro sucked and told me I had a structural short leg..and did not do much for me. I ended up fixing myself on my own

You may be straining the pelvis to the point of spraining the SI joint. If you are still convinced this all muscular there are folks who can help you with that. If you have a joint problem, then chiropractic would benefit you.

I have adjusted every sort of glenohumeral subluxation to dislocation. The AC joint is another story. It has to be set deliberately and immediately. Some hold some do not. I personally would not get surgery on those.

I ended up fixing myself on my own
Thanks for sharing this

You may be straining the pelvis to the point of spraining the SI joint. If you are still convinced this all muscular there are folks who can help you with that. If you have a joint problem, then chiropractic would benefit you.
It doesn't feel muscular at all.
I just searched the SI joint and that does appear to be where the pain is, although to one side. I will see a chiropractic if it doesn't clear up.

I've been suffering with severe upper back/neck/shoulder pain, from years of bad posture. (slouching at PC mostly.) Sometimes It gets so bad I cant concentrate on anything. I went to see a chiro a while back he took an x-ray which showed my head was too far forward, nerves being pressed against the spine etc... So i decided to go ahead with the treatment. I was being adjusted 3x a week and it felt great and was definitely helping - although I would still slouch from time to time which kind of countered all the good that was being done (bad I know.) Unfortunately I ran into some money problems and couldn't keep it up, and am still not in a position where I can afford it.
I've hunted around the net for alternatives and wondered what you thought of this little device.

Sounds like exactly what I need for the problem I have right now?

The pain seems to have moved to the buttock area on the right side, and around the hip as well but I can't quite pin point exactly where it is. It's very prominent when I sit down.
The original injury happened last week, it's got worse and feels like it's gone downwards.
Also, it hurts sometimes when I walk.
I'm booking a doctors appointment tomorrow but still interested to hear what you have to say ;)

sciatic neuritis will travel when the joint is under pressure. Disc usually are the culrit when sitting hurts. SI usually when walking (claudication?).
Anyway Gonstead chiro works fast on fixing these.
I think I have a pinched nerve in my neck. What should I do? Is there a standard cream that people apply, like Bengay?

Hi Oziem,
About 2.5mos ago, I started getting pain after lifting in my right neck/shoulder/trap area, I layed off the weights until I could get it checked out and with no direct lifting (only scap/shoulder saver movements with 5#) the area has been bothering me and tender, sore, what gives?
It does not surprise me after lots of stress, training, carrying shoulder bags (quit that one), little bit of a winged scapula, and I have gotten a burning sensation in the area while running and sprinting for a few years now.
Saw my primary dr. who's a DO, she couldn't release me since she only does gentle stuff, and I have gotten a chiro xray and assessment and have had 3 adjustments so far..... I hope it can relieve my pain and I can lift normally again!
2 weeks ago, I got a massage which helped a lot b/c I was VERY knotty and tense, and I let her get the tension out of my neck, so much so that I was very sore afterwards, I'm ok now, but I'm wondering if I let her put me in too much pain? I was trying to just relax and let her get the tension out (she was a student as I go to a school to get massages)
The chiro told me to ice it and rest obviously, what do you suggest from what I've mentioned about rest period? Should I be doing nothing but moderate cardio? I've been doing legs, but doing them heavy sometimes irritates the neck
It's mostly my neck right now, and I'm very worried as to when I can start training again, and I get a stiffness/pain in the right side my neck/nerves, that's the side I'm dealing with, I don't even know what this is called......any wisdom you have to off will be greatly appreciated! :) I hate this, I wanna lift badly!! ;)

If your intercostal muscles spasm and you have difficulty breathing, I would have another chiropractic opinion on whether you have an impinged nerve in the neck, a displaced rib or a thoracic disc issue.
I went down the road of mid-back adjustments, massage, therapy, drugs for this problem. Resolve was found with an upper cervical adjustment by a Gonstead chiropractor.

If you receive correction, about six weeks thereafter is the recommended rest period.

Well I've had 4 adjustments in the past 2 weeks, so 6 weeks from then?
Is it ok to stretch? It is killing me, not being able to do anything with my upper body....
I'm guessing no scapula strengtheners either? Light leg work and cardio? (which I've been doing) I'm pretty sure I don't need PT, but how do I know? I've already been to the reg. doctor.
There's no tears or other injury in there, I've never had an injury, car accident, etc..
Do you suggest I just keep it immobile, ice, etc for the next few weeks then?

I think he may mean that once you see a chiropracter that the problem may be solved quite simply by the instructions that the chiropracter gives you?
... I think that's what he means anyway.

The websites below and in pages in this thread are described how a "pinched nerve" happens. That is, a joint injury causes inflamed cartilage/ligament to impinge the nerve. Chiropractors use adjustments to correct these subluxations by hand.
The websites below also allow you to find a chiro in your area.
Also recommended is the Miracle Man article about Dr. Gonstead, a most prolific chiropractor.

Interestingly, I put a towel around my neck for the entire first half of the day, and my neck feels significantly better. So much for thinking to go to a doctor

Oh, goody. I have a question. I have a deteriorated L5 and compressed L4. So I still do squats, with a belt, and overhead presses. This isn't going to change until I need my spine fused, I guess. With that in mind, would the best thing I can do post workout be either to use inversion boots/table, or hang from a bar? If so, how long? 2min+? I've also added goodmornings. They seem to help with the back spasms. What do you think?

These questions would be best answered by your attending chiropractor.
Once you have your correction do ease back into your routine gradually.

I think doing step work will stretch the low back well without overflexion. Some time off is really the thing you need.

May I commend you on taking charge of your health and fitness. Now if I may say:
I hope you will get surgery and traction out of your mind and look into Gonstead chiropractic. With proper care you could function and perform optimally indefinitely. With compression and degeneration the problem is posterior disc displacement and wear on the vertebrae. The answer is to nudge the disc and bone forward. Inversion is contraindicated for your problem if you please.

I'm 23 years old and have been training seriously for about 8 years. After straining my lower-back on two separate occasions - squatting and deadlifting - I went to the doctor and had it x rayed and I have been diagnosed with grade 1-2 spondylolisthesis in my L5.
I took about two weeks off from the gym thereafter and my training has unfortunately been forced to be much more conservative, and avoid any loading/compression on the spine. I still have discomfort in my lower back on a semi-daily basis. Is there anything that seeing a chiropractor or a massage therapist can do for my condition? And will I ever be able to squat or deadlift again? Your response would be greatly appreciated sir.

hey i just hurt my lower back earlier today doin deadlifts, ive been icing it and taking it easy, what else should i do to recover as fast as possible?
hi bro, i have two questions :
1. i have an upper back injury & if there is anything u can tell me abt it its going to help alot. plz check this link
http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?p=104358841#post104358841
2. i have been lifting for 2.5 years now & i have my left shoulder slightly wider than my right shoulder & it is noticeable when i wear a T shirt as it is pulled towards the left. Apart frm that my entire left side is better than my right( i am a right handed person tough). I read abt someone who had the shoulder height problem & how a chiropractor made him lay face down on the floor & press his lower back & the next day the guy had uniform shoulders... a miracle. do you know anyway to fix this ?
thanks

I think your choice to avoid squat, dead and military press is wise and on the safe side. Compression and extension are both not advisable. That being said there are many athletes with spondylo who remain asymptomatic. Many of these also employ all sorts of lifts.
There are so many other great powerbuilding lifts that you shouldn't miss them.
Gonstead chiropractic protocol looks to stabilze the sacral base under the L5. In some cases adjusting above the L5 is needed. This care is incredibly effective and highly recommended.

If you need to see a chiro (joint, nerve) or MT (muscle strain) do so.

Adjusting the scapula appears to be the need and what you described. The bone needs to be moved with pressure on that spot toward 3 oclock. You also it seems need a thoracic disc adjustment (see the slight disoloration at the spinal level medialward from your circle.)
