hey scott, diet is ok, not a precontest diet. my brother (who i was doing the show with) got pretty ill and postponed his contest prep until this summer, so i am thinking i will compete most likely in november. plus, this way i can gradually reduce my weight (hopefully 220 lbs by may/june. then i'll probably compete around 210 or 215.
i thought you were supposed to be skiing?
i was visiting my family this weekend in syracuse,ny (the snowiest city in the continental US) and thought you might like this; the snow was up to and sometimes covering street signs, it was also up to some peoples roofs (single story homes). they have already received 120+ inches of snow, and the worst part of the season hasn't hit yet mid feb thru early march) just north of my parents got 100 inches of snow in 36 hours.
so, how come you aren't skiing?

thanks,
for some reason this is a pretty easy exercise for me. no cheating!! i could increase the weight some, but since i rest so shortly, this seems to be a happy medium as far as intensity goes.

Gunz,
Nice workout. I have a couple of questions.
1. Whats a standing calve shrug?
2. You weights/reps for each set show an "xs", like 155/6xs. I'm assuming 155 is the weight, 6 is the reps, but whats the "xs" mean?

noname,
1. standing calve shrug is a shrug exercise performed on a standing calve raise machine, instead of doing calves, firmly plant feet on foot support, pads on shoulders, and shrug. i do these from time to time as it is totally different movement allowing me to move quicly through a delt/trap workout w/out having to mess with changing weights on a barbell.
2. the xs in my rep scheme is simply to indicate the word "times". ie 155lbs/6 times (or reps).

thanks...my goals are pretty basic;
1. be healthy and smart in my training.
2. be intense with my workouts
3. be disciplined with regards to training and diet
4. be as knowledgeable as possible with regards to what works for my body
5. maintain as much lean body mass as posible by june while in a calorie deficit diet
i don't subscribe to goals with regards to how much weight i can lift or move, but i try to focus on intensity, be it more reps, shorter rest period, or more weight. after 5 years of steady training, i feel like i am begining to have an understanding of what works for me.

i go to sleep between 9:30 and 10 pm. i get up at 5, and am at the gym with my lifting partners (we're all teachers) at 5:30. i get to school by 7:15. the gym, my house, and the schol are all close to eachother :)
i know 28 isn't old, i actually feel like i am 28 going on 18 :)
as far as the early workouts, if you can get into it for 2 weeks, your body will adjust, i actually have much better workouts at this time.
since my day is over at 2:40 pm (unless its lacrosse season, which i coach), i am free to go home and sleep!

yes, chins and pull ups have been a staple of my training. as i approached 260 lbs, i noticed much more strain on my shoulder joints than on my lats, therefore, i have changed my exercise routine until my bodyweight comes down a bit and stresses the joints less (i was also getting solid reps 0f 8 with a 60 lb db hanging from my waist, but the joint pain waspretty bad)
as far as teaching gov't. it is interesting, yet, frustrating to teach kids stuff you may disagree wuth.

You weigh 260 and are still able to add another 60 pounds? That's impressive. My world history teacher always twists something that happened hundreds of years ago into a "Why Bush is messing America up" speech. :D

I have been experimenting a little. i always bracket my workouts with protein, carbs and creatine. i used to use simple carbs, now i am using oats.
my pre workout shake - 27 grams oats, 46 grams whey protein isolate, 5 grams creatine monohydrate.
post workout - 54 grams oats, 46 grams whey isolate, 5 grams creatine monohydrate,
i eat 1 hour later

thanks guys...this is my 5th year training seriously, it has taken me this long to figure out how to utilize my time most efficently, in and out, thats my philosophy (on more than 1 thing :))....i love to workout, get it over with, then rest.
people with heavy lifts are impressive, people performing somewhat heavy lifts, in a shorter period of time, are more impressive in my opinion. we all know it is a lot easier to sit around 5 minutes between sets, then put up some impressive weight, but, if you can do that w/45 sec-60sec rest, that is tough..it is also intense, and that is what i'm after...as far as sleeping til noon, i used to do that in college (even on class day), but am at a different point in my life now, and appreciate the sleep, and early rising...thanks for the kind words.

luckily, a perk of lifting at 5:30 am is that there are not that many people in the gym, so if we need 3 machines, my partner and i take up two, leaving one vacant, don't have any problems...i walked out on my own, pretty tough though.

much different feel than heavy barbell shrugs, when i load the barbell with 400+ lbs for shrugs, i seem to lose the feel in the traps, calf shrugs work best for for me after dbs, at times i will also use the hammerstrength machine

i use the hammer machine to further exhaust the muscle...i like to leave knowing i have taxed the muscle group, if i can do reps with weight on the machine after all the other movements, i haven't totally hit all the fibers enough, thats why i use it.

Any reason you didn't do deads before?? They are considered (by some) to be one of the best compound exercises for overall growth.

i am aware of their importance to strength training...i had stopped doing them in sept/oct 2003, as i tried to condense my workouts...i was doing reps of 4-6 with 500lbs...loading and unloading all that weight is a pain in the ass when trying to get workout time down to 40 mins...i finally have a competent workout partner, as can be seen by our short workouts, so i decided to add them back in... my squats have been as heavy as 500lbs for 4, but i was feeling too much strain in my back (6'4"), so i reduced the weight, went ass to grass, and cut down rest time to about 30 seconds...as far as my rows, 315-335lbs for 4-6 is my norm, i reduced the weight a bit becasue of the previous exercises...as far as my goal with deads, hopefully get back to 475-500 by june, then go from there.

Once again, nice shoulder workout. Would you ever consider posting pictures of yourself?

those are some pics, last taken back in december i beieve (black shorts), blue shorts were taken in june/july 2003. wearing the black shorts i was 250lbs, blue shorts 230lbs.
i am currently 250lbs, my bf% has dropped to around 14-15%.
i will most likely continue to lose BF for the next few month, but will not be super strict w/diet always.

i always struggle with the quest to be cut up...since i am married, to a wife who quite frankly could give a **** about what i look like, there really is no reason to get that cut up, unless i enter a show in the fall (which i am considering)
it is much more fun to be able to eat what i want, and reap the benefits the next day in the gym when my strength is noticeably up. (as i drink my guiness, happt st. patty's day :))
you are young, look good for all the girls, i have been there, and done that, now i lift because i can :D
Heisman

Well, if you have no reason to get ripped then don't do it. However, if you are doing a show in the fall then you might want to cut now and see how well it goes so you can iron out the details during your precontest prep.

yes, performed like a bb row, dbs in front of thighs (as if holding a BB) row up towards abs, twist so palms face eachother, bring up near side. hits the muscle a bit differently, i feel these pretty well.

i sometimes use this machine...today, all the benches were being used, so i went to the hammer incline first...i honestly don't care about the weight, just the feel...on regular barbell incline bench i can usually get 245 for 6-7 reps...figure stabilizers are removed, all i'm doin is pushing, it probably assisted me some, but, i don't care, i have at times gone upto 360lbs on the machine for 4-6 reps (i don't include the weight of the machine itself, which is like 18 lbs or so)

Nice workouts bro. Since you don't want to hit the legs hard with the weight (this is just an idea that could be fun) why don't you try high rep stuff? Like doing sets of 50 squats or whatever and see how much weight you can do? It should still help you maintain, and it will not be as boring as not giving it your all in the gym. I dunno, just an idea. :)

1. BMR-2500cals.
2. Reduction of 500 cals per day (2000 total)
3. Will climb to 6 hours of cardio per week
4. will follow the 40.40.20 macronutrient split
5. Diet will consist of whey, casein, turkey, tuna, veggies, some skim milk, oats, whole wheat, water, flax, egg whites, lean red meat, some rice, salmon
6. supps - multi, protein(s), creatine, liver tabs (time to drop the gimmicky supps) - will save the m1t cycle for a rainy day. stickin to the basics
7. workout split will remain the same or similar.

I AM CONFLICTED, PART OF ME SAYS TO CUT SOME WEIGHT, THE OTHER SAYS, EATING IS FUN, HAVING A FEW BEERS ON THE WEEKEND IS COOL, AND I HAVE NO FEMALES TO IMPRESS AS I HAVE BEEN WITH NY WIFE FOR 10 YEARS AND QUITE FRANKLY SHE DOES NOT CARE EITHER WAY (EXCEPT SHE WILL SAY THAT I AM ON THE VERGE OF LOOKING LIKE ONE OF THOSE "FREAKS" SHE SEES IN THE MAGAZINES :D), SO CONTINUE TO LIFT HEAVY, DON'T WORRY ABOUT THE LEGS GETTING TOO BIG, AND LIVE YOUR LIFE!
I HAVE PRETTY MUCH DECIDED NOT TO DO A SHOW, I HAVE NO DESIRE TO LOOK LIKE AN ANOREXIC MODEL TYPE, SO WHY DEAL WITH A VERY STRICT DIET?
I AM THINKING ABOUT HITTING QUADS TOMORROW PRETTY HEAVY. I HAVE BEEN DOING SOME LIGHTER STUFF, BUT JUST GOT THE URGE TO GO HEAVY. I HAVE ALSO THOUGHT ABOUT INCREASING MY POUNDAGES ACROSS THE BOARDS, AND RETURNING TO MY REP SCHEME OF 4-6 (WHICH REALLY WORKED WELL FOR ME).
ANY INPUT OR THOUGHTS WOULD BE APPRECIATED.

Up the intensity on shrugs and add more weight, pretend that a couple punks are laughing at you in the corner saying you cant shrug the weight...thats what I do sometimes...it works...
