What do lats have to do with bench power? I am new to powerlifting, so I find this confusing how an opposing muscle could have a large influence.

Lie down on a bench and place your hands / arms in the location where they would be at the bottom of a bench press (if the bar were on your chest). NOW, flex your lats. You cannot flex your lats without moving your hands 2 or 3" upward. This is the first part of the bench press. Make sense?

that 2-3" becomes even more pronounced when a shirt is worn, because as your lats flex the shirt becomes tighter, and effectively creates more spring.

Those are the two best for lats!
