Okie dokes... There have been and will be many changes in my life so I thought a new journal would be in order. I will ask a mod to close the old one and hopefully all you fun people who've been commenting will find me here. :)

Ok, these messages were in my old journal and I hadn't replied, so I thought I'd bring them over here.
Congrats on the tris! It is strange, but whenever I'm in a funk at the gym I tend to hit a few personnal bests. I'm not sure if I'm trying harder to break out of it by doing more weight, or what. The best thing for you is that it happened on the last set, so hopefully you had a great feeling of accomplishment when you left.
Thanks, BBT. I force myself to go to the gym whether I am in the mood or not... It's my stubborn streak. And I always log my workouts, so I don't allow myself to go backwards on weights, either. Did I mention that I have a stubborn streak?
Hi Elise. From reading your journal, it sounds like you have a full plate and some new things happening in your life. I'm sure all will settle down soon and everything will work out well for you. You're so deserving. And great job on the workouts.
You're a real sweetie, Mark. I hope I can live up to your good words.
That's good to know.
I hope you feel less logy tomorrow.
(Now if I can just use that word two more times today it will be mine) :)
I am slightly less logy today, Jason. Could be the instant coffee I dumped into my pre-workout shake. ;)
Hi :)
just wanted to say I really appreciate your sensible and easy to understand posts on nutrition :)
Also, nice work on upholding the status of chocolate as one of the worlds most important discoveries ;)
Hey SoN, nice to see you hear. And nice to see you with an avatar now. You look great! :)

I think I need to build up more endurance in my workouts. I've been doing legs 2x/week rather than one longer session but I am starting to wonder if I'd get more out of the single, long session.
Great work! Nice to have a clean new journal, huh?
I'm sure the chocolate porn will show up soon enough. ;)

Elise,
Congrats on the new journal. No doubt you will have views and responses that put all other journals to shame within a month...
New job (maybe?), new workouts, I am assuming that the constant will be 70%+ dark chocolate?
Best of luck on the new adventures...

I worse shorts today for the first tiem in a long time and I can see that my quads have gotten a lot more muscular. But my hammies are still small and I think I probably need to eat a whole lot more than I do to see the type of growth that I want.

Hi Elise - I hope I am welcome in here....:D
Great leg workout - and I loved your "near-death" comment. I can relate. I wish I could do Bulgarians like that but I've got a foot issue whereby my foot gets excruciating cramps if it's flexed...in any way. I couldn't bear the excruciating pain in both my foot AND my glutes while going those! I *think* that some people call split squats "Bulgarian squats" - is that right?
I seem to offended you in my journal, so I am making a peace (of Sacher torte) offering! :p

Emma, if you bring me chocolate, you will always be welcome!
Yes, bulgarian squats are the same as split squats. We actually have a station for them at my gym and I like it. It is plate loaded, and it has a place for you to rest your back foot. I find that I have an easier time keeping my balance on it than I do when I put my back foot on a bench.

I believe they do sell organic and vegan chocolate. Whole Foods does, as well, but they don't have as much vegan stuff as TJ's (I have one vegan kid, so this is an issue).

Well, we have one that is really similar that is an incline press but this one does not indicate that it is incline and it hits me slightly differently. I like it because I don't need a spotter but it feels more natural than the Smith.

I sure hope this is going to do the trick, as I have tried everything else! Only problem is that I tend to feel the lying curls in my lower hams (just above the knee) and while I want to grow that area, as well, the area I really want to target is the bit just below the glutes. I love that curve there.

Why does this thread remind me of a Bon Apetite article for some reason?
Hibiscus09
04-06-2007, 08:27 PM
Wow -- they shouldn't be easy.
The key to the exercise is in the point that he makes about "without leaning forward." The mistake most people make is to rise to a vertical position so the upper body and legs are straight up and down and you?re resting flat on your feet -- doing so takes stress off the thighs. You never want to release the stress on your thighs -- you want constant tension. Once you are locked into the Roman-chair, it is most important that you are always leaning back, even in the highest position -- this keeps stress on the thighs between and through ever rep. That?s exactly why the device holds the top of your feet and the back of your calves, otherwise you?d fall over. The best way to tell if you are doing the exercise right is whether you feel it. If your thighs don?t ache even just a little bit after one set, you are doing the movement wrong.
http://www.seriousaboutfitness.com/detail/detail_20040201.htm
They burn my legs up!! It's difficult to keep constant tension on your thighs. You should be feeling it even when doing it with bodyweight alone.
Happy Easter, Elise! :)

Have you ever tried the kneeling leg curl I find that it works the higher part of the hammies.
Yep, I've done them. I've also done seated. I will continue to rotate but I will move them all up in my routine and see where that gets me.
The Roman chair squats turned out to be easy????? There is no way my body would even think of getting back to an upright position after one of those.
Why does this thread remind me of a Bon Apetite article for some reason?
Nothing werong with that, is there? I love reading food magazines and recipes. It gets me inspired. ;)
Wow -- they shouldn't be easy.
.
.
They burn my legs up!! It's difficult to keep constant tension on your thighs. You should be feeling it even when doing it with bodyweight alone.
Happy Easter, Elise! :)
Oh ye of little faith. I do believe I was doing them correctly. Perhaps I shouldn't have said that they were easy but that they weren't as difficult as I had expected.
Happy Easter to you, too! :)

we had to frisk the kids so they wouldn't bring any to church.
they began chocolate consumption began early today (when i was in the basement lifting). it has not yet stopped.

I'll second that! Uumm, one could make chocolate covered pretzels.
Just so I understand the rules: The calories don't count if they're eaten off someone else's plate, they're leftovers, consumed while cooking, and above all else, they're covered in chocolate. Is that correct? Did I leave any thing out?

Yes, exactly! I am suddenly feeling as though I have way too much to do to even consider a new job, lol.
It doesn't help that I've accepted teaching contracts (University of Phoenix) that extend through the end of June, so I will be doing that at night on top of the new job. All work and no play is going to make for a dull Elise. Not to mention that I'll be back to 5am workouts.

I left fulltime work when my youngest was born in 1998 and I've been doing various things from home since. I am really torn now because not having to be at work every day has its benefits but then I sort of miss having grown-ups to talk to (other than you guys) on a regular basis. Plus it's nice to occasionally have a reason to wear something other than a tank top and shorts. Well, that's what I say now... let's see what I am saying in 2 months! :p

Thanks Hoos... no flowers necessary. I was in and back home the same day.
what kind of work schedule will you have?
I'm not sure, Tat. Either 8-5 or 8:30-5:30. I would prefer to start earlier and end earlier but I also have to drop my 9th grader at school (in the other direction... of course), so I can't do something like 7-4.

One of the reasons I work overnight and weekends is so I can see my children off to school and be home for them in the evening. The other reason is so I don't have to be a suit. I don't wear tank tops or shorts but I do wear sweats. I've been doing this for four years now. It's nice being able to dress down for work. If they ever do a way with my job I'll have to get a new wordrobe.

Will you have the option of working from home - ever - w/your new job? Sounds like you will be one busy woman, juggling all of your responsibilities. I hope that you're feeling excited about it. Does your husband work full-time, too?
Have a good day today. How many days left of freedom??!

Hi Elise, hope you're OK
Starting a new job will be v exciting and maybe a little stressful. Don't forget to have some emergency choc on hand for those times when you need a little respite
I always have emergency food on hand. I'll be sure to add some chocolate as well. Thanks for the reminder. ;)
Congratulations on the new job! I hope you feel better.
Thanks, Tiffany!
Whoa totally missed this post! You have a vegan little one? Didn't know. Anyway, most Dark Choc is vegan. If you ever need to be pointed in the right direction just let me know, I'd be happy to assist
Most dark chocolate used to be vegan but most manufacturers have replaced some ingredient (can't remember what) with a small amount of milkfat (it must be cheaper) so a lot of the stuff I used to use, I have had to swap out. If you've got tips on brands, though, I am all ears (as is the vegan chocoholic!).
Love your new avatar! You look great.
Yeah, I had to go shopping for a new wardrobe a couple of weekends ago. Not my idea of a fun reason to spend money. I am very happy with my tanks and shorts.
Thank you for the beautiful flowers! :) :)
mornin choco-chicky:)
Hey Tat! Hope your day sails by quickly.
Morning chocochick. Well I haven't had any pp in my oatmeal in the last few days and I don't seem to be suffering any withdrawals, hee hee. like you said cinnamon in the oatmeal. Hmmm, outta BS ( brown sugar) so just can't get enough cinnamon in to make the taste good, yek. Dove eh. Where can I find that without visiting the US of A? When I see Dove I think of the beauty soap not chocolate. Hmmm, beauty soap chocolate or chocolate beauty soap. Hmmm another coffee I guess. Have a great day.
Del, I don't know what's available to you in Canada but surely dark chocolate is not a rarity? I certainly hope not!

Emma, I am not sure when I will be cleared for working out. I was cleared for showering today and it was glorious! Ok, so it was only one day without a shower but it felt like an eternity, especially since I seem to be a bit of a clean freak. Ok, a bit neurotic about it. Sigh. Now you've outed me! :D
I won't be working from home with the new job; they are very opposed. This is a good thing as it relates to OT work but not so good from other persepctives. It's in a hospital, to boot, and the IT department is in the basement, which I am really not looking forward to. I like seeing the sun during the day!
7 more days...

That may be, I actually don't eat chocolate, but when my girls want it at the organic grocery store all theirs were fine. May not be so at a reg. grocery. Here's a linky to several brands, perhaps you can find them locally:

Hi Elise - I thought I'd share this with you, of all people, who would understand the temptation. I was doing so well on eating what I should be eating today... until I realized it was a co-worker's birthday. Someone brought homemade chocolate scones to celebrate. Yummm!

Is the hospital one of the fancy ones that have their own gym on-site? If it's anything like the hospitals I've been in, it doesn't sound like skirts and pantyhose are the required attire. And that's something to celebrate!

I like a shower in the morning and a bath at night and sometimes another shower in the middle. A few years ago one of my kids was friendly with a kid whose mom didn't believe in showering every day. Claimed it stripped the essential oils off her body or some such thing. I am soooo glad my kids are old enough now that their get togethers don't require mom-to-mom time. ;)

DUH indeed. Can I blame it on the medicine I am not taking? I am well stocked with Demerol and Percocet but haven't touched either.

I don't think there's a term for this. I don't eat meat or poultry but I do eat fish and there's no term for me, although some people call this "pesco-vegetarian." That's an oxymoron in my book.

Lady Elise, how farest thou? Doth thy quest hath thee traversing swamps of gloom and doubt?
I'm not sure I can do it, either! I am having second thoughts.
Milady, be of good cheer. Thou hath more strength than thou mayst realize. The power 'tis within thee. Shrink not, grid up thy loins and standest thou firm.
The night watch 'tis my lot in life and when day cometh I doth slumber. Many a day I nay set my eyes upon much the sun. 'Tis a help to employ many a torch that my laboratorium be bright. Yea 'tis bright as the day. Bright images of Mother Nature's works doth help wondrous well. And Milady there be torches that doth give thee natural light. (http://www.fullspectrumsolutions.com/) These torches doth I employ in my humble abode. Thou mayest find these online and shops to outfit thy home (Home Depot, and Lowe's). To get thyself out for deep breathing at thy noon feasting time wilt raise thy spirits indeed. Alas and alack, I nay must doeth this. To do so wouldest impair my slumber and circadian rhythm. Thou hath day watch and 'tis nay an issue with. Me thinketh a feast time romp wouldst do thee good.
That's an oxymoron in my book.
Oxymoron, an intriguing word.
oxy- or ox- Oxygen, especially additional oxygen: oxygenation.
Moron a knave who be notably stupid or lacketh good judgment.
'Tis an idiot with oxygen. The Lady Emmie nay doubt doth attend such.

Thanks, Emma. That mom was unusual. We met up with her and her family at Williamsburg a few years ago and I was pretty surprised to see that she was wearing pajamas in public. I whispered as much to my husband. Later, as the men and kids were off doing some sort of father/kid activity, she confided in me that her clothes were really pajamas and that no one could tell. I just didn't have the heart to tell her and I damn near shot soda out of my nose trying not to laugh!

Chicken and fish eating vegetarians used to be a pet peeve of mine a few years ago, mainly because it confuses those in the restaurant business when trying to serve real vegetarian dishes. But, now not too much gets to me at all, I'm a really laid back, go with the flow person :)
