Hi Elise! I can see the 2 x 25 routine losing it's appeal really fast....like after rep 10.
Hope it dries out for you! Do you use dehumidifiers in the house, or would that just be waste of electricity in a place like Florida?

My sporadic visits to to bb.com and your journal Elise really bite. I need to learn to speed read or quit looking at your beautiful new avatar. :o Sorry, I shouldn't be so weak.
So you're on a different workout now? One that makes you hunger for your workouts? One that fits your time better? Good. And along the way you've picked up a few ideas along the way? Doubly good. You've still made progress.
I hope your rain is letting up. Have a wonderful weekend beautiful.

I didn't do any Bulgarians today but you can be sure they'd have needed a shower if I had. ;)
Thanks, Hoos, and back atcha. *hug*
I am doing a Joel Marion routine that has you superset two upper body movements and two lower body movements in one workout. He has it set up so that each superset is an upper/lower paid, but I sometimes join the two lowers (this is what I did Mon and Tues, for instance). On each of the four days you work in a different set/rep range, like this:
Day 1 - 5x10
Day 2 - 10x2 (I do 10x3)
Day 4 - 8x6
Day 5 - 1x50 (I do 2x25)
He goes further and tells you to make the uppers one push and pull (I did 2 pulls today because I switched straight arm pushdowns for the cable rows at the last minute) and the lowers are one hip dominant and one quad dominant.
You and me both, Jason. I really need a vacation!
hey sexy, how're things with you?
Who's Joel Manion?
I see where he's coming from, with the rep range approach. But, I can't see how you can do 10 sets of an exercise with a weight that allows 3 reps do you use the same weight, or pyramid up on these rep schemes? Which leg is quad dominant? ..

Morning Elise! Are you sore from yesterday's workout?
Not in the least, Debbie. But I was sore for several days last week from Monday and Tuesday so I am still happy.
Hi Elise! I can see the 2 x 25 routine losing it's appeal really fast....like after rep 10.
Hope it dries out for you! Do you use dehumidifiers in the house, or would that just be waste of electricity in a place like Florida?
Actually, I use a hunidifier in the bedroom because the a/c really dries the air and my skin prefers a little moisrure. Being outside is another story -- way too much humidity, imo.
hows ur weekend hawt and chocolatey?
Well it's hot, but it hasn't been especially chocolaty. :(

I use the same weights throughout, although I am usually dying by the end. Do you think I should be pyramiding?

A2. Hamstring Press - sled + 60
B1. Rocky/Bradford Press - 1 set @40, 4 sets @ 30
B2. Reverse grip bent over rows - 50
C1. Reverse crunches

Hi Bill! :) i was drinking the same ole, same ole. Beats me what was going on. It could be the way the reberse hyper hits my stomach - it is a very uncomfortable machine for me.
Nice job on the workout! I don't think you got nauseous because you pushed too hard, you really can't push too hard* though you can do too much. What's a Rocky/Bradford press? When are you going away? Where to?
A Rocky/Bradford press is like a miltary press except that you raise the bar up in front of the nexk and then back down behind the head and then return to the starting position. That's one rep. You can either do a full ROM or just clear the head; I've been doing the latter because it keeps tension on the muscle.

But of course. We had something called the Green Door at school where you could buy snacks at break time. The only snack they sold was chocolate. I would literally buy 6 bars a day and eat them all! Don't ask me how I did this. Well, all that hash helped... :p

I had a tick once. In my head! In the 4th grade. My mother didn't recognize it for what it was -- told me it was a flap of skin. It kept getting bigger and bigger and finally, in the bath one night, I pulled it out.
And get this -- I brought it downstairs and she called the doctor and he actually came to our house to look at it and me and declare that everything was ok -- it had come out clean.
Ok, I wanted to change the name because people kept thinking it was Dumbbell Fly girl or some such thing. Here's an old thread (http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=589777&highlight=dbflgirl) on it if you are really interested.
If I hadn't bee having a brain fart the day I made the request, I'd be ChocoChick and not Chocolategirl but brain farts are a staple of my existence, I'm afraid.

Best news today is that my daughter has expressed an interest in working out so I got her a pass and will be bringing her with me one day soon, possibly Thursday before we leave. If she likes it, I'll have a training partner. How cool is that? :) :)

Too cool! I wish my daughter would be interested (but then again she's engaged, going to school and raising a 4yo ;) ) It would be hard for her to squeeze it in her schedule)

Yah, see, I get to teach the class before they're married... and then when it flops, in my "paid" job I get to write legal briefs about just how, exactly, they didn't exercise due discretion... just loads of fun...

Getting there. Too bad she is blonde. :D
How old is the daughter, ChocoOne?
15. We were on a walk last night and she looked at my arm and then at hers and said, I want to have a muscle in my arm like you do. So I asked if she'd like to work out with me in the mornings. We have to look at her school schedule and see whether it'll work. She's already made it clear that she won't get up at6am to work out!

So far, she's been pretty steady with her other interests. She's never worked out before, so it's too soon to tell whether this interest will stick or not. I am hoping so. :)

Critical Thinking. The only veggies are my students!
I'm so excited for you! I hope she likes it, make sure to point out to her she can eat dark chocolate after she works out. What are you thinking for her 1st workout?
Critical thinking...awesome course to teach! But the one I took related to psych., stats, and research-I just took it to a different level and started applying it to real life. What kinds of stuff do you teach in it?
Are you enjoying the new routine so far?
That's really cool that your daughter is going to work out with you. From time to time over the years my littlest will come down to the weight room and workout with me. He'll imitate all the stuff I do, even the grunting. He also took a pair of his gloves cut the ends off so he could have lifting gloves like dad. Very cool stuff!

Brian, all my kids eat dark chocolate. There's not one in the bunch who will tolerate milk chocolate. ;)
The course I teach is pretty much an introductory course so we cover rhetoric, fallacies, arguments, etc.

Do you often see the same couples?
Sometimes we get "repeat" customers so to speak. Thru my process in my job we try to get them to see where it was they made their mistake. More often than not, we have people who have been married several times to the same sort of person, and then come to us for help... and that, along with a variety of other reasons, is why I go to the gym to burn off steam! :D

Push/pull is more synergistic, imo. Have you ever seen/done a push/pull that doesn't include arms, Chris? My only "gripe" about a push/pull routine is that I find that that doing chest, shoulders and triceps on one day makes for a really long workout and I don't have much to give to triceps.

Hi Emma. We went to Sanibel Isalnd, which is a barrier island off the west coast of Florida. Very beautiful and untouched. The residents won't allow fast food restaurants on the island so it has a sort of old world charm about it.
The doctoral program I applied to is online. I think that makes more sense for my lifestyle and other commitments. I'm hoping to be able to teach on the ground once I get it.

I like option 3. It is pretty much what I have used over the years for myself and it is basically what I used with most of my clients. It can be used from beginning to advanced. It can be used with light weights/high reps and with heavy weights/low reps. It's a great routine that can be used for years.
While it depends upon the number of sets, reps, and weight used you generally wouldn't need to work on your triceps or biceps very much at all. I would say that with moderate weight, as little as 2 sets of 6-10 reps of any direct stimulation to either triceps or biceps would work well with this routine.

For you, I'm definately in favor of option 1, but if you are just trying to get your daughter started, the full body work for the first couple of weeks might prove the most beneficial. Training a body part once a week when she first starts out might not be enough for her.

Here are the constraints I am working with:
- Can't workout on weekends due to gym operating hours
- Daughter wants to go to the gym no more than 4 days
- I want to work legs 2x/week
- Routine has to be suitable for her (beginner) and me (intermediate).
Well to be frank, the only one close to being a good beginners routine is 4, but its a poor choice for you. I would suggest as one that would work for both of you. Monday- legs, chest, tris. Tuesday - back, delts, biceps. Wed - off. Thursday- legs, chest, tri Friday- back, delts, biceps. Do abs either day.

I knew that I remembered your face from somewhere!!! you were one of the folks examining the ballots/chads! am i right, or what!?
also, I can help with political monkey business. right up my alley.
I got several calls that night from Gore campaign workers urging me to claim that I'd been confused by the ballot, that I'd accidentally voted for the wrong candidate, etc., etc. It was interesting to contrast what was actually going on with what was being reported.

I like this a lot, largely because I've been doing shoulders with back and really liking it. But if my daughter is only going to work out 2 days a week, is she better off with this or two full body routines?

Sets/reps are next... I am first firguring out the split. Whata re your thoughts? I find that I get strong with reps under 8 but I don't grow.
Honestly, Elise, I have found the best hypertrophy (for me anyway) to be in the 4 sets of 8 reps, range. This was Chris' suggestion to me over a year ago and it's worked really well for me - moreso than the DoggCrapp training. I got stronger with DC and bigger/stronger with 4x8's.
I also note that some think the scheme you're talking about isn't good for a beginner. I beg to differ. I went with a full body routine for about 3 weeks and then began splitting it up. I used the full body routine to get my body used to working, then started beating it up more with the split. I've known others who've done well with this routine, including some I trained at the Y. This is just my humble opinion, for what it's worth.

I like working back and shoulders together too. They are very connected, so it makes sense to train them together. I would have her do 2 full body sessions- she could work half your Monday workout, do the rest of her body alone, and Fri do the other half with you and the rest alone. I don't think once a week a body part is enough frequency for a beginner. Up til 10 - 15 years ago, almost nobody worked a body part once a week* Andreas Cahling started that in the late 80's. Twice a week should be ok though.

Milady Elise I doth crave thy pardon. My welcome to thy return 'tis late. Milady I bid thee a most hearty welcome. Thou wast certainly missed. Doth not the many posts welcoming thee attest to this? Yea verily! 'Tis indeed a joy to have thee posting the tellings of thy quests. And wot more to have upon thy return a new image of thy fair beauty. This be a prize most delightful.
Now thou doth bear tales of opportunities for advanced learning and understanding. Yea that of doctoral studies. What joy? Hath thou made a decision to pursue this noble quest? Godspeed in thy choice.
And of thy and thy fair maiden's wielding--I didst favor option three for many of the reasons posted by vja2000 (Sir Vince). However, now that thy child canst nay not lift iron and steel but twice a week I doth favor a full body program. For thy child it would be an introduction to lifting. For thee it would be hypertrophy program with an additional full body day. Art thou familiar with hypertrophy training?

Everything was 4x8 for me, 3x8 for my daughter.
Sumo Squats
Back squats
Lying curls - elevated
Incline Press

Skull crushers (for her)
CGBP (for me)
Overhead cable extensions (for me)
Rope pressdowns (for her)
This was ok, but I felt it was light on legs.

We went to Sanibel Isalnd, which is a barrier island off the west coast of Florida. Very beautiful and untouched. The residents won't allow fast food restaurants on the island so it has a sort of old world charm about it.

mostly working sweetie. my best friend of over 25 years has been in the hospital for a while now and for a while we thought he was dying. his liver is shot from alcoholism and he had to have abdominal surgery which was real risky with his health. after the surgery his body started to shut down and he we liked to have lost him. he seems to have turned the corner now but that has took up my spare time. of course he was drinking like a fish right up to the time he went under the knife. hard core to the end. how about you?

Getting my hair cut always brings a feeling of dread and gloom. I've had my hair long and short because of that.
Now for excitement I suppose it depends on who you're with, why it's being done, and your sense of adventure.

That was a few times ago. I located my guy again. He's been cutting my hair for 13 years and he is great. but he has had some problems in the last few months, so there have been times where he's moved salons and Ihaven't been able to find him, which led to certain disasters. A disaster onone's head is not a good thing.
I'm speaking for everyone when I say "pics please" :D
Not all that different from what's in my avatar, Josie. I think I am going to let it go longer again, though, because it is too much maintenance to try to keep it shorter. It grows too darned fast.
