Hey des,
Nice log! I followed some of your older logs, most of them are Muscletech stuff.
I was wondering, TTA stimulates PPAR Alpha expression right? Does this mean more beta oxidation of fatty acids? And what is the difference in terms of mechanism for Xfactor and Halodrol?
Haha, I'm new here...

Well, I've been working on a few things to get my summer tranformation in order. This includes a revamped diet, a well planned out supplement schedule, and a few tweaks to my current training regimine.
Right now I'm pretty tired and have a taken a few days off to let my body heal a bit before some pretty grueling training commences. As the judges know, my BF % is a bit higher than I'd like it to be. However, I do know what I'm doing and shedding a lot of fat shouldn't be difficult. Meh...
Anyway, here's the beta version of the banner I'll be running during the contest so enjoy. This will be one hell of a journey and be sure to check back tomorrow as the log continues.

So you might have noticed I through in some light morning cardio. Its not much really but will certainly give my metabolism a boost. I will tapering down the calories a bit beginning this weekend to also get the fat loss machine cranking.
Honestly, I'm not a big fan of superlow calories until the end of a cut. I like to up my activity level a bit just because I like working out. I know some of my friends who are competitive bodybuilders scoff at cardio and that's cool. Personally, I like it and certainly look forward to my upcoming track sessions.
Yes, I will be rolling my fat ass on to the UW track for sprint training. Once upon a time I was 180lbs and very fast at both short and longer distance (up to 5k). Now that I'm hovering around 240lbs, I've obviously lost some of my flash but nonetheless, once I get moving you had better watch the **** out.
Regardless, this is one of the best ways to lose fat, build up some necessary aerobic/anaerobic capacity which will certainly be of benefit during the last phases of a cut, and certainly brings about some sick conditioning for the natural athlete. I highly suggest you read this article by an esteemed board member: http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/par46.htm

Good luck with your cut! I am sure you will do a fantastic job, you have a lot of knowledge and seem to really know how your body responds! I agree that cardio is helpful for calorie burning too, at least then you might not have to go quite as low with the calories.

Thanks for the link man.. easily the best link i've clicked on today.
Can't say thank you enough as thats just what i'm gonna do. I'm currently doing the shorter sprints (1:5 ratio) and would love to see how the longer intervals (on the elliptical) would bring to the 'fat-loss' table.

Anytime man. Sprints are great when you aren't running superlow calories. The reason being, they are harsh on the joints which can make recovery less than ideal.

Des, I always do HIIT 1-2 times per week. That article opened my eyes to the anabolic effects that now seem so obvious, but I never considered. I approached my HIIT completely different today and think I got a lot more out of it.
Thanks :)
One question though. How do you model your nutrition around it. Just treat it like a weight training session, or something else?

I'll be doing these on my "off" training days..lol. Essentially, I'll be waking up, downing 5-10 grams of BCAA's in coffee and then heading to the track. After my workout I'll just start with meal 1 which is now 2 cups of yams and 1.5 cups of eggwhites.

Des, no offence but i don't think HIIT without a meal before hand is a good choice.. its basically inviting cortisol at the worst time possible. Fats are not the primary fuel in HIIT (if you're following the article you posted) and doing it on an empty stomach with so little bcaas.. protien/muscle would get hit hard IMO.
HIIT sessions IMO should be done with carbs in the body. POST HIIT when EPOC is raised may be the time to 'play' around a little. Say rest for 30mins and have a pro+fat meal (no shakes here).. this keeps insulin release to a minimum and helps the fat oxidation post HIIT churning along fine. (during this period, depending on how much carbs you had pre HIIT, you may be utilizing fat/carbs as fuel or for recovery.)
After about 90-120mins, then consider your carb meal (as per your diet)
Would love to hear your insight on this.

I agree but I should probably mention I eat at least once in the middle of the night. I typically only get about 5-6 hours of sleep and have a solid pro+fat meal in the middle of the night. Technically, I'm not fasted when I wake up. Furthermore, I do have a carb meal before bed as well.
I see what you are saying though, but for me, I can't go balls out on something like this when I've had a meal 1-2 hours beforehand. I've tried a few times and always got cramps or yacked on the track. :)

Feel free to question away. I love having my brain picked. As for carbs at night I choose a low GI source with a lot of fiber. This keeps me full at night ( I wake up when I'm hungry), keeps my body anabolic by slowing down protein absorption, and all around, allows me to go into morning cardio not as depleted.
I know some worry about insulin spiking by eating carbs before bed, blah, blah. This is why you choose a low GI source that will also have a low GI load.
Never heard of that before. Why not just have a shake?
Honestly, its easier for me to reach into the fridge and grab a breast that is already cooked and some PB then make a shake. Whole food is better anyway for satiation purposes among others.
Basically, my I have three large tupper containers in my fridge. One is full of diced yams, one is full of brocolli florettes, and the third is full of cooked chicken breast. I keep it simple and prep in large quantities just to save time.

Meh...this was a great workout and I've noticed my metabolism is cranking a bit higher. Typically, I'm not completely drenched in sweat during my workouts and the past two days I have been. This is a good sign that its reacting well to the increased caloric expenditure without supplemental intervention yet. When I throw Thyrotabs in the mix it'll probably get real nasty which I'm down with!
My poundages were fairly moderate during this workout. I never throw the weight around and despite higher reps, all of these movements were slow and controlled for the most part save a few forced reps.
On a side note I was pretty stoked because the just finished the new locker room at my gym. Along with this comes a new a locker for me. I can now transfer some of the supps which are cluttering my kitchen cabinets to the gym which will be cool. They will also be carrying Cytolean shortly so I'll be a supp dealer and keep some samples stashed for a select clientele!

so, I am not sure about that!
cortisol is being demonized, but it is being overlooked that cortisol has both - lipogenic AND lipolytic properties.
so, with regards to fat loss I think that it would not be the best option to completely avoid or suppress cortisol.
I think that the metabolic environment and the chronicity of the cortisol elevations are also critical factors: chronically elevated cortisol along with a caloric surplus will supposedly mediate lipogenic actions, while there is no chance to for lipogenic activity in a state of empty glycogen stores and acute energy demands.
nonetheless, it is good to counteract excessive cortisol levels because of the catabolic properties it has on muscle proteins. this is why it is important to not train until exhaustion (exhaustion casues maximum excess of cortisol) and to have some anti-catabolics swimming in the blood, like BCAAs or HMB.

I agree with what you said Dr. P. Losing weight/cutting BF is basically a catabolic process where cortisol plays a vital role in. I guess my point got a little off point in my previous post. I just wanted to stress the condition the body was in at such a time.

So, Dr. P, or Des, you could answer this as well.
I've recently started performing cardio first thing in the morning, low intensity, with Xtend. I am currently at or slightly below maintenance, but I would like to keep this schedule when I up my calories b/c it increases my appetite, and I simply have a better day :).
Would this statement indicate that this may be a bad idea if I am in a surplus for the day? OR at low intensity with BCAAs will the cortisol not be too overwhelming? Thanks.

Seriously though, as a typical endo, cardio is paramount after reducing calories. Regular cardio shifts my metabolism towards a more chronic fat burning state. I guess i could say that calorie restriction helps me lose weight, but combined with frequent cardio helps me lose fat.
After several weeks of this, i sometimes jumble round with carb cycling and/or regular refeeds.

LOL...I like the interaction in my logs. However, I do blog this stuff as well with no interruption:
http://blog.bodybuilding.com/deserusan/
Thanks.
IMO, it's OK to do cardio on empty stomach with BCAAs, however, I wouldn't go mad with it and not exceed a certain time. my personal rule of thumb is: when I start to feel bad then I know it's highest time to stop. feeling "bad" indicates that cortisol is going to start climbing and will reach undesired, very high, pro-catabolic levels. depending on your cardio intensity, HPA axis -responsivity and overall metabolism, this threshold can be at 5 minutes, 15 minutes or 35 minutes - it's all VERY individual. do your cardio, but listen carefully to your body. I find it gruesome when I see people making cardio at really painful levels and with skyrocketing cortisol levels and after that falling in a state of prolonged exhaustion and catabolism.

The Workout: 9.5 out of 10
**30 minutes of fasted walking upon waking
***I'm excluding all warm-up sets***
Squats: 315lbs x 22, 315lbs x 22, 315lbs x 18 (failed big time...lol BOOM!)
Hack Squats (high foot placement): 360lbs x 10, 360lbs x 10, 360lbs x 10
Reverse Hacksquats (http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/glasscut2.htm): 90lbs x 10, 90lbs x 10, 90lbs x 10
Lying Hamstring Curls: 180lbs x 10, 180lbs x 10, 180lbs x 10
Hybrid Calf Training (http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/fitshow30.htm)
Precor Elliptical: 20 minutes
Thoughts
In case you haven't noticed, I haven't been pushing heavy weight on squats anymore. The bottom line for me, my legs don't respond to it. They do indeed respon well to high volume and is why I keep the reps high and the poundages moderate.
On my third set of back squats I was beyond failure but still trying to hit that 19th rep when my legs began to collapse. Needless to say, as seasoned weight lifter, I know how to drop a bar off my back with getting hurt. It did make quite the noise to say the least.
You will also notice I've throwing in reverse hack squats. They really hit the inner hams hard which is something I'm trying to beef up. Give them a try if you are advanced but keep the weight low.

Yes. The CD on a whole is kinda weak, IMO, but it is cool to see them evolve a bit away from the raprock. It has a bit of a U2 feel to it with the harmonizing and songwriting, plus the political lyrics.

Man this was a bitch. I could feel my gut swaying from side to side which in hindsight was pretty funny. Anyway, this went pretty well and it was nice to get outside and enjoy the beautiful weather. It was a sunny 80 degrees here today and I'm starting to get a bit of color.

Most of time its regular eggs. Sometime I splurge on some eggwhites in a carton. However, stuff like Lana's or Eggwhite Int'l is a bit hard to justify even though I'm loose with my cash and can afford it.

Interesting: I heard about those, but are they 100% egg whites? I though there were not but obviously I could be wrong.
I know that eggology dot com has 100% REAL egg whites. Perhaps there is little difference b/w the two brands.

I have another question on Nov XT, if you don't mind.
If I want to run it as a stand-alone supplement.
To get the most gain, is it more optimal to go 8 weeks straight then 4 weeks off?
Or
do a 4 weeks on, 4 weeks off, 4 weeks on?

Yes--and it beats breaking eggs and separating the yolk; I have such little patience you see (warning: patience declines with age)!
And the customer service is great. One time I was concerned because one container came slightly "unfrozen." Although they said it had no effect on the product, they nonetheless sent me another container (and the owner called me at home). I was sold after that.
And no (in case anyone is thinking it), I have no affiliation with the company besides my credit card.

On another forum, this guy posted this question; it is obviously a joke but I swear I could not stop laughing for quite some time!
Ok, I see. I'd like to ask for some follow-up here.
I am currently in a bit of a funk, as my girlfriend left me when I kept screaming "light weight! yeah budday!" mid thrust. She never understood me.
She could only squat 175 though, so no big loss.
But moving on: how do I work this 'laying' into my meal regimen? I have a strict policy of eating every 32.5 minutes, which I have correlated with my circadian rhythm and the gravitational fluctuations of the moon (check t-nation for verification of all this, they have studies) and this is clearly the optimal route to glycogen replenishment and protein synthesis. It has worked well, I have skyrocketed from 138 to 139 in the last year, I think because of my glutamine supplementation, but currently fear that I may be reaching my genetic limits.
I try to keep a shake on hand for mid-laying consumption, but often find the excessive vibration to detract from my drinking experience. I tried saying, "Baby, get on top, I have to drink my shake now" but they never seem to like that. So, sometimes I spill a little, and I worry that I am losing out on crucial amino acids. Would you recommend that I add more glutamine?
Follow-up question: my foreplay skills have received consistently low marks, but as we both know, brown rice/natty pb/100% lean chicken are the only things that enter THIS mouth. You have to make sacrifices for the lifestyle.
So in conclusion, is there any way to increase the macronutritional value of eating pussy? Should I add glutamine?
Thanks in advance.

What an attitude! Cutting quite simply = blah/hunger/low carb anger!
And it leads to giant threads where people torture themselves with pictures of their favorite foods.
On a serious note when I had been cutting in the past I would log on to Amazon.Com every night and look at all of the gourmet food and practically drool...it was quite an experience. Honestly, I don't like overloading the body with supplements around work out time. Its a myth you need to take creatine, beta alanine, etc pre or post workout. Granted I do take SizeON while I workout, but its formulated for that purpose.

After last week's sprints I was one sore guy heading out to New York. It was like the first day of football training camp minus all the tackling bruises. Regardless, I spent most of my time with Vanessa and didn't record my workouts just as a break from logging.
I'm a day behind but will be up to pace tomorrow. Anyway, yesterday's workout was pretty brutal because I was still feeling the effects of the spring training. Once I was warmed up though, most of the pain subsided. However, once my legs were "cold" the soreness came back. Hopefully it will have subsided by my next spring training session.

By the way, how are you doing X-Factor/MP? Do you ever take MP close to workouts?
Considering the mechanism of action, it really doesn't matter much at all, with regard to melting point.

I have another question on Nov XT, if you don't mind.
If I want to run it as a stand-alone supplement.
To get the most gain, is it more optimal to go 8 weeks straight then 4 weeks off?
Or
do a 4 weeks on, 4 weeks off, 4 weeks on?
bump to this, in case you missed it :D

Slight bend. However, what helps stimulate the inner fibers better is imagining that you are trying to touch your elbows together during the contraction instead of you knuckles. :)

Its actually pretty cool and the contraction is insane. Since the ROM is increased you force a lot more blood into the depths of your inner pectorals.

I didn't really mention this but awhile back I had an injury to my bicep. I've trained through it for the most part but if have kept the weights relatively light. Needless to say, its better so I will be upping the weight. The lesson learned was that doing weighted pullups (BW + 135lbs) wasn't worth it.
This particular workout was pretty smooth. Despite being down some weight, my strength has not left me. Maybe its the warmer weather, but I'm feeling more alive these days. It could also be that I'm not carrying a ton of fat. Being 250 + lbs isn't easy but certainly was fun when it came to eating.

Yes, the water retention is definately there. As far as my pressing technique is concerned, I get a full stretch and push the weight up maybe 2/3 of the way. I'm a firm believer in the constant tension principle. I don't twist or anything. If I want to hit my inner pecs I'll do an inner pec exercise.

Pretty much every workout now. I vary it between three different workout scenarios though. One starts off on a seated toe press, one on an angled seated hack squat, and the third is on a 45' leg press. I also vary toe angles every workout too.

Hey man, I've been meaning to ask about your use of AM fasted cardio since you've started this recomp. I've read a bunch of conflicting opinions on the benefits (or lack of) in doing this. There is something that just makes intuitive sense to me about it (you're fasted so your body has already begun releasing fatty acids to support your energy requirements in lieu of food), but I was wondering if you might have some scientific support.

And honestly, I trust anecdotal evidence as much as a published study, but I'm always curious to understand the underlying mechanisms. I did the AM fasted stuff about a year ago, but I have since shifted to regular afternoon work. I'll probably rotate back into the AM variety when I start cutting for serious. I'm just looking for the optimal way to lose fat and maintain muscle -- the holy grail I guess... :)

I did some poking around after my question the other day, and I found this little tidbit by Dr. Mel Siff in his book called "Slim Before Breakfast." He quoted a study in favor of fasted cardio:
A study carried out at Kansas State University (Wilcox, Harford & Wedel Medicine & Science in Sports and Exercise, 17:2, 1985), indicates that a kilogram of fat will be oxidized sooner when exercising in the fasted condition in the morning than when doing the same exercise in the afternoon. By measuring respiratory gas exchange, caloric expenditure, and carbohydrate and fatty acid metabolism, these researchers showed that the mass of fat burned during aerobic exercise amounts to 67% of the total energy expenditure achieved when the same exercise is done later in the day or in the fed state.
Of course, the controversy still surrounds the question of whether or not you catabolize more muscle protein in that state as well. And still other people insist that it's not the fat your metabolize during cardio, but rather the effect on metabolism throughout the day following it. Sheesh... For my part, I'll stick with intuition and anecdotal evidence I think :) What's a brother got to do to get lean these days?

also depends on how long you do it for, at what pace and intensity
It also depends on what your diet has been like and your metabolic state as well as any preworkout supps taken. I really like some carnitine and caffeine in early morning fasted cardio... GO! is perfect for it. I usually don't use BCAA though because of the insulin response they generate.
The best way to take advantage of fasted cardio is to be in "fat-burning" state aka on a very low-carb diet (note: I did not say keto.. keto is a gimmick).

In this log you mostly talk about how your training went, not really the particular effect of HLG that you are experiencing.
I'm interested to know what kind of effects that you are experiencing with HLG, such as, how much strength gains and how much lbm gains that it has helped you to achieve?

I'll be covering this in my final review. I strayed from the "science" discussion for one reason: I don't want people knowing what I'm researching. There are too many copycat artists out there and accidentally divulging any theories of my own might put money in someone else's pocket. :)

I did my first in-store demo today. I sold them out of Cytolean and sold Superpump to 62 year old women looking for something to energize her before aerobics. Seriously though, I didn't pimp it to her. She tried a sample of the new lemon flavor and asked what it did. I told her it was probably too hardcore for her (I was being serious) and she said "I can handle it." LOL!!! :D

Thoughts
I'm sorry about the lack of updates over the past two weeks but I got a bit burned out on logging. Since this wasn't sponsored I'd figure I'd take a little break. I'm back and feel refreshed.
As far as my training has been going I haven't slacked on bit. I've made some modifications to both my diet and cardio schedule. The reason being, the lower calories are setting in bit and I want to focus maximal effort on weight training at present while still losing fat. I've been really hitting it hard lately with my split and the improvements are quite obvious.
I've also been busy with various Gaspari projects. In case you haven't noticed, I am live demos in various supplement stores and some other projects I can't mention. Giving advice on the forum is one thing, but in person I'm not relegated to my typing lazyness and can talk "shop" for hours on end.
Granted, I still have my day job as a software engineer but getting out into the public and highlighting the supplements I like best (not just Gaspari) is just plane cool. I know most forum members base their perspective of the market and industry on the events which take place here, but once you actually work for a company like Gaspari and turn off the computer is when you realize sometimes how skewed your perspective has been. The world is a big place.....
Coming pretty soon I will be discussing ways to hopefully grow the bodybuilding.com community as well. I truly feel some of the potential here has been skewed by a few small companies who have essentially monopolized the culture here. The lesson I have learned as of late is that things need to change and if we want to make bodybuilding.com more inviting for all companies and their consumers then a few things need to change. This will better serve both the community and ultimately bodybuilding.com as well.
More on this later......
