major ick.... i guess it COULD have been worse... I can't think of HOW... but it IS possible...

Well....she was sitting behind and we were stuck on the plane for another 20 minutes waiting for the door to open. That's when they turn the airflow off in cabin. YUCK!

We then had to walk in the rain to the terminal on the tarmack and the morons triggered an alarm which was deafening. Essentially, most of my senses were attacked within minutes of being in NY. Go figure...

I had the worst traveling experience ever. The highlight was an old woman gettin **** on herself because of turbulence while using the bathroom. She then couldn't figure out how to unlock the door which caused quite a commotion. Needless to say, the plane smelled like bowels as we circled La Guardia for an extra half hour.

Holla at jah boy!

I'm in Manhattan right now (Tribeca). It's been a long two days as we were getting Ness ready for her show. Lastnight I had to shave every inch of her which was a joy .

I then had to spray her down about five times with Jan Tana so she's looking mighty dark. Needless to say, covering up her tatoo's with Dermablend was a chore too. Ugghh!

Alright, pre judging starts in a few minutes so I'll be back in a bit. :)

Sorry to make a funny subject serious...

But I've noticed that the ILS effect is sometimes a result of posture, not really a purposeful attempt to create "size". If you stand in a somewhat rigid, militaristic way, stomach in chest out, shoulders back, tailbone slightly tucked in, you'll end up with your arms flaring out slightly creating what might look like ILS. I first noticed this after spending some time with professional loggers... heh, don't ask. :)

Novedex would be overkill IMO. I haven't had any sides except for some increased DOMS. So far I would rate this stack as a 9.6 for recomping but I'm only 1.5 weeks into a 7 week log.

sorry to hear that man. Be thankful though that you didnt have to endure 20 hours of flight time like I do when I visit family in Israel. That 12 hour flight across the atlantic can be brutal if something in that manner happens when you're seated next to the bathrooms (luckily it was only one time for me).

I understand, but do you think its a good idea to run Novedex straight after HLG, what I mean is will it provide even greater gains? Will it provide additional strength and mass increase? Or its main purpose is only to taper off HLG better?

It's to maximize some of the effects HLG's have. Gains are contingent on your diet and training style so if it's there it will help.

Thoughts

After a few days off I was definately ready to get back into the gym. My reason for the break was because I was spending time with my sweetheart in New York. As a glutton at heart I couldn't resist her joining her in her post competition binge of peanut butter based junk food and pizza. I figured, this will be my last chance to have these things for awhile so why not enjoy myself.

Anyway, this training session was pretty brutal coming off a small break my body is always at 100% which means I can lift at 110%. This can be hard sometimes on the power weeks because while I can lift more weight I also need to focus on not injuring myself which means finding a heavy weight I can control with ease.

I haven't done barbell rows in awhile so it was nice to see I was able to pull some decent weight with good form. The rope rows felt really good too and I recommend you try them out. It offer a greater ROM in the concentric portion of the motion which allows for a deep squeeze to for a killer eccentric portion. You can almost feel ever fiber in your lats and low trap explode with stimulation.

To maximise the effect of HLG + Novedex is it required to have a really high caloric intake?

Say for example my usual calorie intake is 3000, is it required to bump it to say 4000 cals in order to get the optimal effect from HLG + NXT? Or just stay on 3000 would be alright?

As always, a hypercaloric diet is best for bulking. At your weight I would probably be taking in about 3200 calories.

Well, after some careful consideration, I decided to venture off my familiar stack a little. I have 2 more months before I'm going to start a serious cut ( I'm looking to enter an NPC qualifier in November :) ). In an effort to maximise this time, I'm going to be using Aplodan, SizeOn, GAKIC, and bulk BA. SizeOn will be the new variable, so I'm curious to see what impact it will make on my training.

Thoughts

I haven't really talked too much about side effects on this stack for good reason: I really haven't experienced any. Admittedly, my DOMS has increased a bit, but beyond that everything is steady as she goes. I don't mean to imply people that have had experienced side effects in the past are pussies, but it certainly is a possibility. ;)

Anyway, many of the benefits I have been experiencing have included increased vascularity, a better sense of muscle control, loss of fat, increased muscle fullness, and no muscle loss despite losing 8-9lbs as of today. This stack is really proving to be stellar for recomping. Maybe my results are a bit extreme because I did drop my calories a lot with my new diet, but regardless, it's worth the money.

Down the road I'm certainly going to stack Designer Supplements Activate which also contains 3',4'-divanil with X-Factor alone. Halodrol LG contains a synthetic version of 3'4'-divanil and I'm certainly interested in how divanil works in an extracted form. Based on the user feedback I'd say it looks very promising for me.

For natural competitions what is the usual standard for bf%?

I've heard from some people it is around 4% as trying to get lower than that without taking in exogenous testosterone would be very bad for health. Is this true?

I guess when I actually start cutting I'll be down around 225lbs so it won't be as bad. I'll be cycling between Thyrotabs, Designer LX 2.0, Cytolean, X Factor, and Halodrol LG's throughout the process.

Probably around 5% I would guess. In reality the illegal compounds some use for show prep in untested organizations far exceed exogenous test. It would most likely include some powerful duiretics and site injected steroids to bloat the muscle.

I went to the FDA website and couldn't find anything on it and haven't seen something like this on big time news like cnn, new york times, etc. I'm more leaning to this being false or just over dramatization.

Also, if I really wanted to go after my legs when I come back from my little break, how might you arrange a split to hit them 2 times per week? Thanks Zach. My interest in Japan was actually born from my grandfather's very vocal hatred of the Japanese. He was a WWII Navy pilot that fought the war in the Pacific.

I spent my summers with my grandparents in a small beach community near Ferry Beach State Park. A day wouldn't go by where I didn't here "Jap" this or "Jap" that mixed in with all his crazy war stories. When he passed I was left with a sword that Kamikaze pilots flew with among a ton of other authentic Japanes WWII antiques.

Needless to say, I developed a keen fascination with WWII history and then Japanese culture. When I began my undergraduate studies I decided to take Japanese to meet my language requirement and actually had 8 semesters.

The tagname "deserusan" was actually a nickname given to me by a TA whom I was very fond of. In class I could be seen drinking a protein shake which seemed odd to most but he certainly respected due to my muscular frame hence the name "diesel" or deseru in Japanese.

You are correct in spotting the japanese in my new banner. It's katakana for Daniel...each symbol meaning da, nyu, e, ru:

http://www.rfsd.k12.wi.us/high/hsfl/kata-cha.gif

I also have a bunch of kanji in my avatar that is presently displayed. One frame is the seven virtues of bushido (rectitude-gi, courage- yu, benevolence-jin, respect-rei, honesty-makoto, honor-meiyo, loyalty-chugi). One is an japanese proverb, masakatsu agatsu, which means true victory is victory is self victory. Another frame is actually bushido, which is interpreted by some and myself as the "way of the warrior."

This ideology has influenced many cultures and might explain at times why I act the way I do on the forum. I take it pretty seriously at times. :)

Well EC was the bomb. Nothing can really compare to it but I must say that using ephedrine as opposed to ephedra leaves little to be desired. It's just not the same really. I tried a few doses of ephedrine HCL on my off day to judge tolerance with Cytolean because I get asked so much (the Duchaine approach I call it) and it alone just isn't strong.

Melting Point is doing a good job in synergistic manner with X Factor because they both stimulate PPAR alpha. Tetradecylthioacetic Acid stimulates gene expression of PPAR alpha while Arachidonic Acid can be used to make leukotrienes act on PPAR alpha as well. I think they have a strong synergy which could explain why I've lost 8-9lbs of pure fat from what I can tell.

Hey Des! I also took Japanese in college for foreign language requirements. Unlike you, I barely passed the first 3 semesters, and completely failed the 4th. It was hard for me because outside of the actual classes, there wasn't really any way for me to practice unless I watch anime with english subtitles. I've been exposed to (American) english since I was 4 or 5 yr old and people still recognize that hint of Filipino accent on my pronounciation -- so I expected Japanese to give me a hard time. I got to a point where I can understand, say and/or write simple sentences, but everything fell apart when we got to strictly using kanji :(

Onaka ga sukima****a.

I'm actually hungry too and Japanese was pretty hard at first. But when you are passionate about something and have great professors it becomes a bit easier.

Yeah, I was not as dedicated to learning Japanese as my friends were (they were already reading Japanese books without english translation), as my first choice really was German (mother's side of the family is from Austria), but there weren't enough interested students so they dissolved the class. It also didn't help that I was doing 2 part-time jobs and training for table tennis varsity.

I had very good professors, but the second one was a young smoking hot female on her mid-twenties -- she can get quite distracting at times :D

Anime gives a me headache. I do like the graphic though. :)

Thoughts

I've decided to switch my split up a bit. I've switched biceps and triceps training around and have added a light arm workout on shoulder day. Since it seems like my recovery is up a bit I from the Halodrol Liquigels I will certainly be pushing myself a bit more. I've also reverse the P/RR/S order to P/S/RR.

This workout was in part based around a recent Flex Magazine article about Milos Sarcev training a few pros at his gym. Normally, I don't read Flex but decided to pick up a copy for the plane ride home along with a Scientific American. Needless to say, I was a little shocked to see both the Hydrid Calf Training by James Lewis (http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/fitshow30.htm) and the intense giant set style of Milos Sarcev (http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/fitshow52.htm) included. These have been featured on the Fit Show (http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/fitshow.htm) for months and I'm glad to see it's finally catching on.

Also, if you are a fan of Milos Sarcev he is holding a free seminar at his gym in May. Registration can be done here (http://www.wpse.com/milos.asp) and this is one opportunity not to be missed. I'm tempted to go....

des, how are you liking Sarcev's giant set method? How are the gains? Do you not feel that it is excessive on a daily basis with little room for progressive power overload?

I had a Sarcev style leg day and it kicked my butt, no doubt. It really manned me up again; but I could not help but feel that id be making better gains off say a 10 x 5 squat routine than a routine that has me doing bodyweight squats holding onto something, no matter how much it hurts.

Thoughts?

I think it is excessive on a daily basis and why I would cycle it in once every three weeks for a given body part except for maybe legs. The gains are good because it's excellent at stimulating the muscle and almost force feeding it with carbs if you take them during your workout (recommended for this).

For strength gains this obviously has a disadvantage and is why I only recommend it to advanced athletes. I myself and am not concerned with strength because I am already strong. I'm also focused on developing my physique and am not powerlifting.

The key here is variety.

Yes sir. It also make you wonder why people are buying into Anabolic Scam (I mean Pump). ;) Creatine alone enhances glycogen storage in muscle without having to manipulate GLUT4 translocation which cannot be stopped in adipose tissue like some would make you believe.

The bottom line, there is no actual Holy Grail but rather a clear deception of what really is truth. Ever read the Davinci Code? ;)

Here are some good references:

van Loon LJ, Murphy R, Oosterlaar AM, Cameron-Smith D, Hargreaves M, Wagenmakers AJ, Snow R. Creatine supplementation increases glycogen storage but not GLUT-4 expression in human skeletal muscle. Clin Sci (Lond). 2004 Jan;106(1):99-106

The second study is of particular interest. Creatine apparently is not only anabolic through its intramuscular water retention and ADP->ATP conversion, but helps with glycogen supercompensation too. Sweet!

There is a few freemotion in my local gym too. I must say they do offer a little different type of resistance. E.g. the freemotion cable crossover definitely requires the person to have better control. Otherwise the swivel pulleys tend to flip-flap.

I wish we have more of those freemotion seated quad & freemotion squat machines.

It's cool that you're not afraid of throwing machines into the mix. I get tired of 145lb kids trying to tell me that you can only "get swole" with free-weights. Machines often give "better" resistance on the eccentric portion of the motion, and I think we agree on the value of that. Bottom line: in the endless pursuit of throwing different angles at your ever-adapting body, machines like these freemotion things are an excellent bit of variety to incorporate -- Bob's your uncle!

LOL...fortunately no one lectures me at the gym but rather they just get out of my way. As I mentioned in your training log, my arms respond much better to lighter weights probably due in part to the fact I train heavy with back and chest days.

Regardless, the FreeMotion really allows a more dynamic plane of force application that free weights cannot provide with movements that are not linear. I'm noticing some good things in my arms which is always welcome. Particularly, I've always had trouble really hitting my inner bicep and the long tricep head. With the FreeMotion it's no problem at all.

Another ridiculous workout almost plagiarized straight from Flex Magazine. I'll be honest with you, I'm never really impressed with what I see in magazines in terms of workout advice but obviously, since its Sarcev influenced you know it will kick ass.

Since I did this workout two days ago (I'm a bit behind in the log), I can tell you my chest is pretty sore right now. What's great though is that it looks really full in all areas.

Also, you'll probably notice an exercise in the bicep portion of my workout you have never scene before: Knuckle Curls. Maybe there is a different name for them, so if I'm stepping on some toes I'm sorry. Essentially, try leaning forward in most musclular position with you palms facing you. Now flex you biceps back and forth and you should notice that this motion really hits the outer peak of bicep. I find its pretty easy to do these on the FreeMotion machine so give them a shot.

I do agree the Great Sarcev did mention the kind of arm exercise (Knuckle curls). It hit the outer biceps very well.

He coached the dude in fitshow demonstrating in one arm basis, the multiple angle to hit the biceps.

One question, did you perform yours the same, one arm knuckle curl or double arm?

Congrats to you being selected for the transformation contest.

Des:
I apologize in advance if this question(s) has been asked:

1) Melting Point recommends taking 6 per-day if you are 200 pounds, which I assume you are. However, looking at page 1, you take 4 per-day. It appears you have been successful with that amount, do you attribute that success to the stack with XFACTOR? I often think they manufacturer's often have you consume more then is necessary (some, not all). To date I have taken the ECA stack--but would like to try something else, if for no other reason, to mix it up some.

2) I took, and did get positive results, from HG; but I had to stop after an injury occurred. I am now into my cutting season (considering a master's contest); do you find HG enhances BF loss? Some believe it should be used only during a "bulk."

3) AA is present in both HG and XFACTOR, I assume there is a logical reason that you are taking both?

4) XFACTOR recommends consuming an additional 500-1000 calories a day, yet you are on a "cut" for your contest. Has this affected you negatively?

I wanted to know because there is a good chance I'll end up either Studying or Working in Madison in the future and good gyms are hard to come by.

Just curious, do you genuinely believe you can target different areas of your bicep depending upon the movement?

Yes.....essentially the degree of rotation of your wrist is what allows for this.

and what about grip?
Not sure if this is correct, but wider grip for inner bicep muscle, narrow grip for outside??

Ya, please explain this in Des detail, I fail to see rotation of wrist to have any impact on targeting certain areas of the bicep  I can see placement of hands on bar being a factor.

Heh....just flex your bicep using varying wrist rotations. A lot of lifters don't realize this because the weight they use is too heavy,

hey des do you use DOMS to gauge how your workout was?

No...my workout scale (1-10) is based on how stimulated, exhausted, and just how I felt about the workout.

To date I have taken the ECA stack--but would like to try something else, if for no other reason, to mix it up some.?

Both AA + TTA stimulate PPAR by different mechanisms. I'm staying with four caps a day to avoid side effects and feel I don't need anymore.

2) I took, and did get positive results, from HG; but I had to stop after an injury occurred. I am now into my cutting season (considering a master's contest); do you find HG enhances BF loss? Some believe it should be used only during a "bulk."?

AI's + ECDY + AA can be used bulking or cutting.

3) AA is present in both HG and XFACTOR, I assume there is a logical reason that you are taking both?

I'm a bigger guy and can handle more AA.

4) XFACTOR recommends consuming an additional 500-1000 calories a day, yet you are on a "cut" for your contest. Has this affected you negatively?

Not at all.

Thoughts

Man, my shoulders were popping after this workout. The last two sets were awfully painful to say the least. What was funny is that I get a lot of stares from other gym patrons conducting these giant set workouts. I'm not afraid to get loud and throw dumbells around when things get intense.

This workout was a few days ago and still, my lower traps are really sore. I actually had a massage yesterday which proved to be quite painful because of this.

I really do not understand how you recover so well. It look like your muscles are whacked by the time you hit the DB laterals. You dropped your poundages then.

All a sudden you hit it with a snatches as heavy as 135lbs  I can imagine you yelling like a Alpha Male ROARRRRR!!!

Des, do you take maintenance dosing of bulk BA for recovery? any other recovery products you high recommend? :)

Heh..I do recommend bulk beta-alanine for general health and endurance purposes. Frankly, some of these BS capped products piss me off because they are charging $0.40 per gram of BA when you can buy it for $0.06 a gram as powder. Considering it's highly soluble and tastless I don't see ANY reason to buy it in the more expensive form. 2-4 grams a day is generally recommended.

For recovery purposes I only really recommend a free form BCAA product and to the more advanced athlete perhaps some high dosed glutamine. I'm really like the research on myokine production and oral glutamine has a direct impact on this post workout.

Those were all supersetted. Essentially, one of Sarcev's theories behing this training protocol is that it forces glycogen supercompensation. If you aren't injesting carbs while you do this you can actually do more harm than good but since I'm taking SizeON its all good. I'm fairly certain his new line of supplements will carry a periworkout carb drink.
