Just like to say that body building is becoming a great part of my life, though I only started lifting weights 4 years ago I feel that at the age of 44 I have a better looking and stronger body that at any other time in my life.
Up untill recently Ive concentraited mainly on the arms, but I've recently revised my workout to a more balanced routine.
It's never too late to start and it's certainly not a sport for just for the young men.
All the best for you guys over 35. (sorry, women as well!)

Is it going to feel strange sometimes not being the only guy in the gym working arms?? :D I personally get that "out of place" feeling a lot!!

Dang HIB , I am clean shaven everywhere , I guess that leaves me with the un-sexy men !!! LOL

Clive , nice round bi's dude . Look very good for your age , very inspiring . For some good criticism , your forearms look out of place attached to your good bi's , you need to start with the Popeye routine to catch up !!!!!
Good luck with your new routine ..

Body hair seems to be out of fashon these days, no matter! I'm not compeating. I'm just an ordinary guy that works out to keep fit strong and hopfully looking good.
Just a question to people out there.
I'm from the UK and is it my imagination that body building is bigger in the USA than it is in the UK? The reason I ask this is that I don't see many good builds about in our horridly short Summer. Most guys look overweight or just skinny, women seem to look after themselves better though. Any thoughts!

Perhaps they don't flash it as much Clive? lol. I notice the guys are pretty much the same no matter where you go. Plus the US is a larger and more populated place. I think in any country though you will find that they have the obesity and couch potato problems.

In the US, many MEN AND WOMEN don't take of themselves. Most are overweight and unfortunately we've become a society here they don't give a damn anymore. Blame someone else for YOUR problem and if your obesity causes health problems, insurance or the government will pay the bills. Sometimes I feel us healthy people are big suckers because our taxes and health insurance premiums pay for everyone else's self inflicted problems.

Matez comments are negative, I dont mind criticism but it must be positive criticism, stuff that I can learm from. I havent been in this game that long and Im still finding my feet.
It must be rememberd that as a family man I cant devote endless hours to myself, so Im more than pleased with the progress Ive made so far.

The negative criticism of Clive's "neglected" body parts is unnecessary because he addresses these issues in his opening comments in this thread, "Up untill recently Ive concentraited mainly on the arms, but I've recently revised my workout to a more balanced routine." He's new to bodybuilding.com, and is still learning from exposure to its great resources. He's already faced these negative criticisms in the Post Your Pictures forum. Some of them were rather vicious and uncalled for. Fortunately a few people there referred him to specific training resources, resulting in a "recently revised workout to a more balanced routine." Let's be more encouraging with positive advice and criticism to a "newbie" who's learning about bodybuilding. Isn't that what these boards were intended for? We've all been there to some degree when we were starting, and we are still learning. Why attack someone who is not our enemy? Welcome, Clive!

Thanks for the support out there, nice hearing from oldie again he always has something inteligent and worthwhile to say. I find these forums more useful than most as I don't go to a gym due to family comitments and workout at home . So I dont get much of a chance to talk to like minded people, I find it helpful for information and motivation, as it's a bit lonely on my own ( big sigh from everybody! ) But seriously Im quite positive about my weight training and I know Im going to make more progress.
One question, Ive started doing Hammer curls in my routine, what is the diference do these make between these and standard curls?

They put the bicep in an akward position so they can only contract hard and take over as the primary at the top of the movement. I think that's what creates the taller muscle center(bicep peak). Also Hammer Curls recruit the brachioradialis very heavily through the bottom 2/3 of the movement, developing the top of the forearm.

F071557 ? :)
*Also hit is the brachialis pushing the bicep up and away from the tricep a bit. This produces a thinker looking arm.

F071557
01-06-2004, 12:56 PM
Sorry to nitpick, ojs, it's the brachialis you're thinking of that makes the upper arm look thicker. The brachialis sits underneath and slightly to the outside of the biceps brachii. Hammers do work the brachioradialis also. That's the fat muscle on top of the forearm.

Hibiscus09

The best way to get it done is hydrostatically at a University or facility that offers that method. It's a little expensive, but gives the most accurate measurement. Another way is to have it done at a gym. Or you could order bodyfat calipers & do it yourself. I have accumeasure digital calipers & I think they're somewhat accurate -- but it wouldn't surprise me if it could be about 4% off either way. There are also manual calipers you can order. I bought the accumeasure digitals from this site. I believe they sell the manual calipers also. Yet another option is a bodyfat scale. There are a variety of brands, so you may want to research those or perhaps someone here can let you know which brand they have. I have Terralion & they suck. LOL I've also had my bodyfat measured using a handheld electrical impedance (I believe is what it's called) device. I believe electrical impedance is how the scales measure bodyfat also.

All sorts of choices. :)

Oh, and there are ways to take your bodyfat using a tape measure also. You can find online calculators where you take measurements of yourself & the calculator will estimate your bodyfat %.

This web page might be of help with anatomy....

http://www.exrx.net/Lists/Directory.html

In the left column "MUSCLES", click on the specific muscle name and it will display an anatomy illustration of the muscle.

The right column "EXERCISES" lists muscles/areas and opens animated exercise descriptions.

The dumbbell hammer curl is illustrated at.....

Offendee or Offender?

Clive, what is the next bodypart that you would most like to bring up? People have different priorities. Theres no doubt that legs can be a pain and a bore. They take probably the most energy to work and often a day of rest before and after is needed to keep from getting too sore. I'm sure this is one reason why some bodybuilders skip doing legs and concentrate on the "beach muscles" - the ones that they can show off while dressed or at the beach.

It took me quite a while to establish a routine for back, traps and shoulders, simply because of my learning curve. Free weights especially came later. I was doing legs early on but my seat position or leg position was not right and I was getting injured or not able to make significant gains.

People will tell you that the muscles work synergistically and having a large muscle and then a small opposing one puts the body out of whack. But supposing you set priorities, which one would be next?

I must admit I would like bigger shoulders I beleive the lats are the ones to develope here I think this will compliment the arms which is no doubt my best feature, Im doing squats which I can feel working the legs, these need some work as they are a bit on the slim side. I'm going back further than 15 years... actually I am 40yo and I was 18yo when I used to go there. What was the pie eating thing all about? lolol.

Don't know where I got my energy from back then...we used to rave until 4am in the morning.

Thanks, doing heavy dumbell shoulder presses, and eating more I think is helping here. I've eases back on the biceps a bit to concentrare more on the shoulders, Ive been looking at some pic on the site and there is no doubt that good delts can really compliment the arms.

Keep it up! What are you going to focus on next? I'd say your biceps can coast for a while until everything else comes up to symmetry.

Guess you were not much into the rugby scene back then. The degrogatory(sp?) saying towards a Wiganer was a pie eater. Used it all the time when playing a club from Wigan. I will say though, they made some of the best meat pies in the area.

I measured my chest and was delighted to find I've added an inch and a half (now 41.5") I know that dosen't seem a lot but I've had a 40" chest for years so pehaps those squats are doing something afterall.
Forearms are going well now nearly 13" I've said this in a other post (On the otherside) That I recon hammer curls are helping here. You have to grip them harder (well I do!) and this worked those forearms. I know after doing Hammer curls I can feel it's worked them and I get loads of vains.
