View Full Version : Offseason Chronicles of a Strongman..the Road to Nationals 04
Welcome all to my new journal. Welcome back to my usual readers and thanks for the continued support, and hello to any and all new readers. This will be my workout journal for now, as it's finally the offseason! I am qualified for 2004 Police/FIRE/Military heavyweight nationals, and this will be my road to shocking the world, and being the Rocky of 2004.
This is what my plate looks like comin up:
Now, Nov 3, til ? -> Offseason training. Continue to work for overall body strength, endurance, speed, explosiveness and athleticism. Main focus on leg power, hip explosiveness, upper body strength, and endurance.
May 04->NASS Team Strongman Event. Team up with a lightweight and compete in Illinois.
July 04->NASS Illinois Record Breakers(same as last year May's contest)
October 04->P/F/M heavyweight Nationals -> My time to put 2 years of hard work to use and shock the world. Rocky lives again in 11 months.
Also will announce as the dates come in:
Eau Claire 3rd Annual Strongman(prolly April 04)->Where I did my first contest last year.
Harvest Strongman(before nationals prolly)->Ran by a friend and local strongman.
For now I am doing a basic routine of about 4 days on a week in the gym. Mixing it up with heavy compound core lifts, with higher rep chest work and assistance work for endruance.
Professional Shawn Smith works at my gym, so he wants me to train with him on Saturdays, and I will be doing Illinois chairmen Tony Soucie's PR days the first sat. of each month.
Anyway, enough of me rambling on. Crtitique away, all help appreciated
11/03
worked out with a friend from Purdue I met at a strongman contest for the first time, at
Flex Appeal, our gym. Did a bodybuilding based chest routine today, as I am leaning towards
more and more volume and endurance work with chest, as wellas size development, since chest
is only a secondary at most muscle in SM.
DB bench: 35x15, 45x12, 60x10, 70x8(PR), 75x6(PR)
notes: Hes a built, lean, strong dude..so it was motivation to try and keep up..helped me
get a PR..hell yeah at these..been waiting to break the 70# mark forever..killed it today
Smith Incline Bench: 75x10, 115x10, 135x10, 135x8(PR on smith)
notes: did these on smith bc regular hurts my shoulders..these were much easier to isolate
chest on..liked it
Cable Flies: 40x10 (PR), 40x8, 30x10
notes: first time doin these HOLY HELL was there a pump!!
Seated bench machine: 90x10, 120x10, 130x10
notes: did these as a finisher..kept the pump..good finisher
Forearm Curls BB: 40x10, 50x10
DB forearm curls: 25x10(each hand seperate), 35x10(PR)
notes: first time doin these..weird
Reverse Forearm curls BB : 40x10(PR)
notes: these alwyas were hard for me lol
NOTES: great workout..huge chest pump and complete burnout..it was great...hope to finally
GROW in the chest :)
Shawn Smith today was like..this weekend's the last home game..no more excuses after that
 so starting in 2 weeks Ill be getting my ass absolutely KICKED each saturday by a
professional strongman...*envisions the puking, literally crawling back to the car, and
horrible horrible sunday mornings waking up*
oh well, I WILL shock the world at Nationals 04, WHATEVER IT TAKES

right->16.6", left->16.3"
i was stuck in the 15s since last year..finally got 16 this fall frome xtensive tricep work, now onto 17 and 18 :)
11/4 workout
Bent Over DB Rows: 30x15, 40x12, 50x10, 70x6
notes: LOVING this exercise
cheat hammer curls(simultaneous): 30x10, 45x10
DEADLIFTS: 135x5(FAST AS ALL HELL!), 225x3, 335x1, 385x1(heavy), 415x1(PR), 420x0(nothin left)
notes: I said before we started 410DLpr dies...385 was heavy but I said I do NOT ****ING CARE 415 WILL DIE TODAY..so chalked up and did it...hehe, had a cheering crowd of about 5 ppl by the end of the lift as it was slooow
cable seated CG rows: 90x10, 120x10, 150x10
notes: I am struggling in 2 places with Deadlift...right where an 18" deadlift starts and at lockout...im good fromwhere i do 18's and from the floor, but transition from floorto past 18 gets me..same with lockout..
would it be beneficial to train like 6" ROM deadlifts heavy???
-DB rows feel so great!
-i LOVE getting a crowd at the co-rec...hehe
-grip is beyond solid on 420+ deadlifts...its my legs that are holding me back with deadlifts
overall solid workout, 5lb pr on deadlifts over a few weeks ago
new totals
bench: 230
squat: 285
deadlift: 415
TOTAL: 930
thats just a sidenote...all this is is a stepping stne to nationals next year
also got my credits and schedule worked out for next semester..19 this semester, 2 summer classes, next year and an internship next summer and then DIPLOMA!

hehe thanks bro..i was SO built to deadlift...pus havin a crowd cheerin ya thru it when you start to stick gets it goin...took a LONG time to go up once it hit high shins, but god damnit it came!
i was talkin with AMG on FI
im gonna start doin hardcore speed deadlifts
i can get 420+ EASY off the floor, grip is solid
and I can 18" 475 and nearly had 500
so if Im capable to get that much off the floor, AND from 18", theres NO reason im not deadlifting 475, 500 by now...its my speed, i get stuck in the transition from about 15"->20"
right below and at the bottom of an 18
gonna do hardcore speeds for awhile, at the inspiraiton of AMG and Amatuer WRestler. so hopefully i have a dead explosion this winter up to 500 :)
now if only I had your squat/bench :(
:D
Fullback_45
11-05-2003, 09:24 PM
You got it thats all that counts! I feel the same way about my bench, i mean ive locked out 285 with half of my ROM in a power rack. Your going to kill that dead this winter. You can do it if ya put your back into it! Tear that dead the fk up like allways, and your bench and squat will come!
thanks bro
11/7 workout
TGIF
leg extension: 70x15, 90x10
squat: 95x10, 135x10, 185x10, 225x6, 225x6
1-leg leg press: 135x10(per leg), 185x10, 225x10(PR)
DB overhead ext: 40x10, 55x10, 60x10(PR)
dont do these often hehe
Cambered pushdowns: 80x10, 120x10, 130x10
notes: workout out with same guy as Monday..good workout..1 leg leg press felt good :). squats felt horrible!
AAANNND
commited to next saturday to do event training with Shawn

gonna be event training saturday at Tony Soucies with Xeyedbear and Shawn Smith(pro)
didnt get to gym today..was gonna do husafeldt carries with my 80lb salt bag on the bball courts here, but its rainy and cold..hence slick
so im gonan do them HERE now:
in this hallway outside my apartment door
40ft straightaway..lol
guess i get to work on my turns :)
it keeps goin past the cornerish jut out there, paced it off at 40ft
sorry it was so dark :)

sweet looking bro, have fun with those :) hehehehe
got a few pics, put em up ina bit
Husafeldt Carries with an 80lb Salt Bag FOR MAX DISTANCE
Set 1: 725 feet(just over 12 straightaways)
5min later..
Set 2: 1070 feet(PR) (just under 18 straightaways)
notes: completely raw..no belt, etc...was rainy and slick outside, so couldnt use the bball courts..used our floor..60 feet 1 way...had to stop on the turn bc no room to swing turn..thats ok, more practical for the real thing...second set sucked by like 300feet...did aLOT of stopping every 60feet and rested it on knees squatting to rest...grip was odd bc was smaller and could hug it, was too small circumference to bear hug with fingers locked..so was awkward...forced myself to hit my 1000ft goal on second set...back was killin by the end and i was huffin and puffin, but I got it
Loved this event in my April contest, and saw it on ESPN WSM reruns today(my cousins was on!)

80lbs
first set, and he's off from the starting line!
like I said, our apartment floor(third floor) from the 2 end rails to e/o was 60feet exact basically one way...open air hallways
look at those massive arms :p

RESULTS FROM TODAYS EVENT TRAINING
Log Dl's: (first part of log, to knees): 130x5 as a warmup
Log Cleans: 130x5, 130x5
Log Press: (full motion now): 130x5, 145x5, 160x4(PR)
Farmers Deadlift: 165x5, 255x0
Vertical Bar Lifts: (R=right hand, L=left): 135xR,L ; 180xR, 190xR(PR!)
Pinch Block Barlifts..2"block: R: 35x6.5seconds(PR)...... L: 35x4.5seconds
notes: Good day...Log felt heavy today, but learned a few new tricks and techniques that made it feel ALOT better...these should go up QUICKLY when I get these tips down! 160x1 was my old PR before getting 170 last contest...so 160x4 wasnt bad for a bad day :)
Farmers was a bitch too...255 is 20lbs more than I've tried, but wouldnt budge..just wasnt the day for it
grip however was excellent..Vertical bar is just a straight up and down bar with weight on the bottom you lift to waist..did rpetty much as anyone there(of course we had all killed our grips already..shawn and them were doin farmers holds with 355ish)..from what I was told 190 was an excellent amount for the frist time doing these
overall I am pleased..I had alot of fun hanging out with the guys, learned alot, and improved on a few things..as well as got some PR's :)

just wonder if anyone knows what Im talkin bout with vertical bar lifts nad the pinch blocks..i hadnt heard of the vertical before
from what Shawn and them told me, I have a prety strong natural grip... :)
must take after my cuz, he has an excellent grip too..those were his better events at the WSM..and in Ironminds catalog shows the same...btw, I hear hes back up to a beastly 355
this is KINDA what we used
except a homemade one
made of 2" steel, no caribeener for this lift
so the black thing, in 2" steel..plates loaded on the bottom end..thats the vertical bar lift :)
didnt count the actual apparatus weight...did 190 on just the loaded weight

Farmers was a bitch too...255 is 20lbs more than I've tried, but wouldnt budge..just wasnt the day for it
grip however was excellent..Vertical bar is just a straight up and down bar with weight on the bottom you lift to waist..did rpetty much as anyone there(of course we had all killed our grips already..shawn and them were doin farmers holds with 355ish)..from what I was told 190 was an excellent amount for the frist time doing these
overall I am pleased..I had alot of fun hanging out with the guys, learned alot, and improved on a few things..as well as got some PR's :)
everyone watch out...beast comin' through...:D
nice job with the PR's, and well the whole workout. I have to try those vertical bar lifts - would you happen to know a site where there is a video showing that because I'm still a little confused on how to perform them? Also, I gotta get me one of those logs, but need some cash first. Well, great job there BPP!
thanks br :)
ill look around, if I dont find one Ill get a video next time I do them
but basically imagine putting a heavy dumbell on its side, so its standing up..then take of the plates from one side...now grab the vertical handle with 1 hand and lift :)

I might be..but like today and last week just felt weak...ive had 300on my back before for a box squat attempt and it felt light...225 on my back didnt feel light lol... still adjusting to all the walking/living on 3rd floor..legs are not sore, but just never fresh anymore... theyll go up though... but yeah, ill try and start kickin the weight up bro :)
yeah
heres his numbers, as posted by strongman John Beatty on the Anvil:
Schoonie turns in a 2055 total at his FIRST powerlifting meet & had plenty of room to spare. Only took his first 2 attempts on the bench, & told me he had a lot left on the squat. Lifts: 744 - 585 - 727 = 2055.
also, Ed Coan won the meet doing it ALL RAW:
Ed's lifts: Squat 760 Bench 501 DL 705 1967 total
All were done RAW! This is coming back from knee surgery
Man I hope I'm his prodigy!
I lift alot like him...good with the back and pulling events..not great at stones..except hes a much better log presser
this made me feel good...John posted this about when he started(which was about when I first met him and found out we were related):
When Brian started Strongman, he was mainly benching & doing a lot of carrying at work. His bench workout was absurd, about 3 times as many reps as you'd need to make progress. He told me one time 135 x 40, 225 x 35-40, 315 x 20-25, 405 x 12-15, 455 x 5, 495 x 3, 515 x 3. (numbers may be slightly off, but that kind of sticks in your head). At the first Central USA in 1999, he told me he wasn't squatting regularly & didn't like deads, both had PR's of 405. He placed 2nd at Nats that year (his 3rd Strongman meet.

Sweet, you have had 300 on your back before. You can squat atleast 330 IMO. Your his prodigy bro, just keep up the awesome training. DAMN BRO, your cousin would use that much weight for those kinds of reps RAW?!?! Thats strong enough if you ask me. My hats off to Coen too that is an awesome RAW total and that is amazing coming off of an injury as serious as his. He will be back on top in no time.

FK man that guys a beast!!!! Thats one crazy ass bench workout!
thanks guys
yeah, those were his raw numbers..of course not paused between reps, but other than that....
pain->330?? whoa... ill use that as my goal though :)
yeah
those were both great numbers
I feel sorry for the ppl at the Snowman challenge hehe
its a strongman contest in January run by John beatty...brians doin it bc theyre friends
anyway, its pro v. amatuer, same weights....
they have a TIRE MEDLEY
5 tires to flip
Brian is bringing his 1180lb tire....and John is trying to aquire a 1350lb tire
TGIF's WORKOUT
note: I Don't sleep on sun/tue/thur nights..i stay up all night, go to my 730 and 830, then take a nap from 930->2 when i go back to class....i worked out instead of napping today...so this is on a night of light drinkin and no sleep..but decent diet..we grilled porkchops and cooked potatoes at 430am hehe
Push Presses: 45x15, 75x10, 105x5, 135x5, 165x2(PR), 115x10
Bench..high rep for endurance: 95x25(pr), 115x20(pr), 135x15, 155x8
Incline Smith bench: 75x10, 95x10, 115x10
Deadlift holds for time: 315 x 38sec , 405 x 25sec , 225 x 30sec (first time doin these with a regular size barbell..all pr's
Tri Pushdowns(cambered type bar): 70x10, 80x10
notes:
-old PR on push presses was 160x1 most of the year...did 165x2 today..was happy with that, esp since legs are still kinda sore and dead from mondays legs day
-bench was solid..155 never got a rhythm and ****ted out, but the rest felt great..great pump(still have one lol) and felt very strong
-Incline bench smith...do these on smith bc it doesnt hurt my shoulders this way...lets me concentrate on upper chest without worrying bout form or injuring while trying to stablize...felt good
-deadlift holds SUCKED bc a) grip not 100% from sat yet, and b) no chalk allowed..so hands were sweaty....started losin each one like 5 seconds in, the rest was willpower and fingertips
-tri pushdowns...tris were DEAD..these were HEAVY to FAILURE..great burn!
overall very pleased with a workout on no sleep....great way to end the week!!!!!!

apr in lowercase means a new lift pr or a minor pr

OMG PLEASE TELL ME THAT KEG WAS EMPTY
THE POOR BEER, ITS ALL HEAD NOW
:diving catch to save beer:
yeah i started lifting about 4 years ago and i was squating like 220. then i was at 300. then we got this assistant coach, the vikings wanted him but he ****ed up his knee. fu<ker was insane
he told me to go change and get ready for squats. i came back to like 330. him yelling in my ear made me just start the pistons.
my senior year i fought my best friend in everything. i squated 400, he did 415, i did 420 and he did 430, i got 435 and i said NO MORE. he stopped at 460.
we did 550 lbs calf raises for triples. used to run with the football sled loaded with 300 lbs. 185 walking lunges across a 150' balcony and back. i think we just tried to kill eachother

So when he follows in your strongman shoes, is that how he plans to beat his competitors...by kicking them in the nuts first?
BTW, was the other cousin there...the strong man? That would have been one interesting gathering.

Cool, but I'm still taking a couple weeks off after max out. Shoulder's been acting up again the last few weeks...for some reason, the DB militaries were a great help last week, but I'm forcing myself to take the time off and give my whole body a chance to recover. Will be doing some med intensity cardio and gripwork here and there to keep sane, but I need the rest...and the sleep. ;)
its all good bro
youll come back stronger bc of it
listen to your body
:)
note: talked with EliteBSU about O-lifters and top olympians and how they train squat up to 4x a week...well, now I am in LOVE with squat and want to do nothing else lol...so that explains the following ..plus teachin myself endurance/working thru dead legs...for nationals
SQUATS: 45x15, 95x10, 135x5, 185x5, 225x5, 275x1, 305x1, 325x1(PR!)
WALKOUT: 405,
squats: 335x0
notes: yes I did these for a new PR tuesday..and I did them again. see bottom for notes!
Paused Bench: 95x15, 135x10, 165x10
Snatch-grip DL: 45x10, 95x10, 135x10, 135x10
DB shrugs: 70x10, 70x10, 70x10
strict CG Cable Rows: 90x10(warmup), 140x5, 150x4, 170x3, 180x2, 190x6(190 = entire stack :D )
NOTES:
-warmuped up and stretched squats enough that they werent sore anymore..just felt a bit heavy doin reps...just not fresh, but didnt hurt...325 was a 10lb PR...335 went up about 75% of the way and stuck...fought it and moved it more, but in the end spotter took it..was THAT close...
-405walkout didnt feel bad at all...bar started to bend actually a bit at 325/335..could see/feel it just slightly..405 had some spring to it..was cool...405 dies by Feb
-did 325 and a very close 335 on 2 day old dead legs...335 goes EASY next week, as does 350
-Painthriller inspired the snatch-grip dl..just like he inspired me to go beyond my fear and squat 3 bills
-first time in my life i WANT to squat..all the time,..dont even care about DL's right now  just wana squat baby squat!!! UNLEASH THE POTENTIAL
-shurgs were done lighter and SLOW, really squeezing them
-CG rows were strong as hell! just wanted to do alot of weight on em before leavin the gym..and realized i didnt need to use legs like a truck pull...i was gonna do a 54321 pyramid, but it felt so good I repped the stack hehe, no legs :)...co-rec needs more weight :)...not even a PR with the whole stack lol...impressed the 2 watchin me though..they asked about strongman(had a SM shirt on) and talked for a bit
KICK ASS WORKOUT...350 SQUAT DIES BEFORE XMAS BREAK...405 DIES BEFORE VALENTINES DAY

Proppy what you have accomplished twice this week is ****ing awesome. 315 on Tuesday and 325 on Thursday, WOW is what im thinking. Your squat is shooting up like a rocket, YOUR ON A ROLL BRO! Im glad i helped you out that much. It makes me feel good, and it's fun to watch you progress. The 405 walkout is awesome, that will help your stability a whole hell of alot on squats, and it will help you get used to having heavier loads on your shoulders. Josh Bryant does them alot. Check out Josh Bryants (http://www.joshstrength.com/) web page and post on his board and ask him as many questions as you can. He can help you alot, and he replies quick. How did you like the Snatch Grip Deads? Im in love with them, and they will help your normal dead out alot since your using a varied grip. I myself am using straps for them so i can handle heavier weights on that kind of grip. Also, congrats on working up to the whole stack on cable rows as well. That outta turn some gym rats heads. Congrats Proppy, awesome **** bro :buttrock:.

Same ones i used to have problems with...they hadnt bothered me all year..but i woke up with it yesterday, and worsetoday...dont think my shoulders like the matress the apartment supplied...never had pains ths year til I got to school
also I have season basketball tix for Purdue and we have a game at 230..but main reason is the shoulder

Wuss! J/K, rest up and take it easy that's about all we can do here in the NE with all this snow.
lol
if it was minor, id go and warmup and try and work it out
but its the worst its been in quite awhile :(
we'll see
Purdue game was fun
to make my ****ty day better, got an email back fromthe guy running my nationals
events are BIG
there will be a light weight and a heavy weight class 225 the cut off.
Right now the events will be
Axle press, 200, 240 lbs.
truck pull, harness,no rope,
car dead lift for reps,
medley, finger, tire flip and drag,
atlas stones, 200-310 for light weights, 250-360 heavies 64' down to 42' platforms
*sigh*
so i didnt sleep period thurs. night or during the day friday..sleep for like 6 hours last night and have to get up for a group project meeting..we get nothing done and scrap the one good idea we had for a visual aid...I skip strongman training bc of shoulder...go to Purdue basketball game instead...my season tickets are good..lower level, midcourt, but NOT IN THE GOD DAMN STUDENT SECTION...so im alone(noone i know goes) and sitting with old people...when in HS me and a friend LED ourpep band bc we ot so into it and nuts...now I cant bc im not sittin near the others...wonderful.....then I sit at home on a Saturday night doing HOMEWORK...the girl who wanted me to call her's phone is off...the other girl i went out with a few times is being all non-talkative lately and busy...
i swear to god, girls only get interested either when your taken or treat them ****ty...the minute your single and treat them well they lose interest...it happens to me constantly....
plus due to political issues and lots of long-story bull****, me and my roomates were forced to go fully inactive on our fire department while at school...meaning no training or calls til summertime....so one of the few things I had at home is gone now too
anyway, back on track
hopefully this is a 2 day flareup with the shoulder, if not I'm basically ****ed for nationals...bc when it was at its worst 2 years ago, I couldnt even lift a pop can to drink from...it was fine all year, did contsts and log press felt good and did good...now out of nowhere i get to college, my lifts start increasing and I start making REAL progress and it acts up worse than it has in over a year that I can rememeber...
i swear to god i wish the damn rotator cuff would've just torn apart in the accident 3 years ago instead, bc now since 2000 ive seen 5 dif doctors like 12 times, had xrays,etc...STILL no good idea on whats wrong with it...physical therapy only ran up a bill since insurance refused to cover it but waited 10 sessions to bother tellin us....
best thing for it was resting, then working very hard at the gym with good form and strengthening everything
hopefully its just a sleep wrong thing, but ive had lots of those down at school for some reason, but never CLOSE to this bad...so if it goes away this was all just a rant..but otherwise yeah god hates me, purdue is boring and yeah

I'd say give it a lot of rest right now. Sounds like when I killed my shoulder a couple cycles ago. Hasn't felt 100% since, so I decided to take these two weeks off. Well after I made that decision, whatever pain was left has been slipping away  Now I'm starting my two weeks "rest" and I feel like it's unnecesary now.
Anyway, I have a habit of sleeping face down with my right arm under my head...and this seems to reagrevate my shoulder every night, so now I try to keep myself out of that position.
Maybe all you need to do is re evaluate your sleep. Have you tried a matress pad? Maybe a night on the floor or the couch for a change of pace.
And don't worry about Nationals. You honestly didn't expect it to be easy, did ya? When you get over the shoulder, use it as motivation to force yourself into those weekly sessions with Shawn. When there's no more pain, you have no more excuses to blow him off.
You have a real opportunity here. Get yourself focused, come up with a plan, and when you're back to your old self, force yourself to stick with it. This self-pity Proppy isn't the Proppy we've come to know. You're stronger than that. Look for the light at the end of the tunnel and bore yourself full force toward it.
You will survive and come back stronger!
thanks bro
i have a matress pad even!
iunno..we'll see
i just needed to vent
its just an opportynity to squat 4x this week now

And squatting doesn't kill your elbow? I know it's brutal on my arms and shoulders.

QUESTION
They WILL have a weight class at nationals
I have 6.5 months..I am about 247 right now...weight cutoff is 225
I was about 235 on the summerwhen I did most of my contests...
so...do I all out dedicate to strength and bulk and go in heavier than ever to try and compete with the big weights
or
slowly cut down to about 220, 225, get in with the lightweights and maximize strength down there and use the lighter lightweight weights
so..I'd have to cut just over 20lbs in 6.5 months
weigh differences:
Axle Press: Heavy: 240, Light: 200
note: worried bout these...C&J and overhead is not a strongpoint
truck pull
note: love these..good at these
car DL for reps
note: DL and Grip is good, but will have to try this one(Tony has the setup in Illinois to do it)
a medley
note:
(little confused by his email...whteher medley is the fingers, tire flip and drag, or what...was written very confusingly
atlas stones: heavy: 250-360, light: 200-310
62' - 42' platform
note: Horrible at stones...never had any luck with anything over 240lb stones..have done up to 230, but typically bomb these..dunno why...back strength is obviously there
whatcha guys think?
1) Go heavyweight, all out strength and try and get strong enough to place better..along with enough cardio to get thru the day
2) go lightweight, increase strength but focus on conditioning and try and out condition/endurance everyone
3) go lightweight by cutting quicker, then truy and maintain weight and go more all out strength/enough cardio again

I'd say slowly work your way to the lower weight class, if you want to win or beat records thats the place
you can hold a fair amount of your strength if you go slowly, and cut the junk i.e. no booze and corn dogs before bed
with the lighter weight on the events, with fair conditioning you can rep out 2-3 more.
if you need help with the C&J, hit me up and i'll shoot you some pointers

thanks bro

worst part is the start of the cut, after that its easy
me and a friend did BFL last year..our idea of low carbing was keeping carbs below 10g and as close to 0 as possible
lol
did that for 7 months, with a 1 week rbeak in the middle
i have a pic from the end of it
i didnt get "cut", i got skiny as hell lol

Seriously, what holds you back on the atlas stones? Is it difficult to get a grip, or do they just make you too front heavy?
i dunno
i know in september it was shouldering it...i had always trained on shorter platforms and competed with them..i got there and it was as tall as i was lol....had never trained to lean to shoulder them
but dunno...i think mainly the hips/legs....it seems usually i get it to my legs, but cant shoot it up
12/8's workout
didnt mess with upper body due to shoulder..and wasnt in the mood..so motivated myself by watching every josh bryant and tommy fannon squat video ive downloaded, and blasting song 7 on St. Anger on the way there(LOVE that song)
all done COMPLETELY raw..no belt, nada..
SQUATS: 45x15(10 closer stance, 5 wide stance to warmup as usual), 95x10, 135x10, 185x8, 225x6
note: complete ass to grass, narrower than usual stance slightly
Lockouts/Walkouts: 315x3, 365x3, 405x3, 455x3, 495x3, 545x3(PR!)
notes: 1 rep = lockout from armpit height, walk it back(only 2 steps tonight..no spotter), walk it back in...rack it...etc for next rep
Pause-in-hole Squats: 135x10
nice finisher...held for 4 breaths at bottom, 3 at top rest
BB holds: 225 x 1min
NOTES:
-what else, squats hehe..LOVE em still
-quads felt heavy due to ****ty sleep/eating today, so took it easy on squats..plus plan to max again soon
-really wanted to do lockouts/walkouts..these simulate the Yoke almost perfectly...but didn't go any heavier than 545 bc i was starting to get a bit shaky walking and had no spotter or belt
-pause in holes always are fun..ppl always happen to look and think ur stuck hehehe
-ppl kept lookin at me loadin up weights for walkouts..like why arent u squatting? one guy even offered a spot when I had 495 on there hehe
-lower back felt very tense today, so when i got to the holdsit just was making it worse, so just set it down gently at 1 minute so I can walk tomorrow lol..cant WAIT to get my belt :) its fun doin it no belt, but all it means it longer recovery time from the muscle soreness and that gets in the way
-think im getting a red, white and blue Inzer ratchet stlye belt for xmas..yay!
hehe xmas this year = 90% strongman/lifting stuff, 5% electronics, 5%clothes/other lmao from what it seems
-overall happy with the workout, was pressed for time too...

Really really strong squat session. I think ill have to try those Rack lockouts! That must of felt great haveing that much weight on the bar. Before long youll be takeing 545 for a ride to Parallel.
What really is the purpose of a belt? Is it to help protect against injury or what? I hear as a general rule of thumb that you are not supposed to go over 300 without one.
Kick ass workout!
P.S- hows the shoulder?
thanks bro! rack lockouts are fun...plus like I said, theyll help train your body and stabilizers to hold that kindof weight..fun watching the bar just bendin acrossyourshoulders....give it a grunt, and stand up with over half a thousand pounds on your back
next time I have a spotter I wanna try 600+
belt is alot mental too, lets you not worry about weight and just go, but yeah protects against injurty..keeps you tight in the midsection s the muscles dont have to do as much...just feels tighter and helps
shoulders still a bit sore, but better :)

12/10
Bent over DB rows: 40x10, 50x10, 60x10
Deadlifts: 115x5, 175x5, 225x5, 295x5
CG cable rows: 100x10, 140x8, 170x6, 180x5
Stiff-legged Good Mornings: 95x10, 135x8, 185x5, 225x5
NOTES:
-DB rows were a warmup for the workout, and bc DL bar was in use heh
-DL's were just easy and light..tryin to work some of the soreness out of the back...was gonna go 335x5 but again no chalk @ co-rec...cant wait to have time next week on again to hit my gym daily...damn school
-CG ccable rows are quickly becoming a favorite for me...wanted the whole stack(found a stack there goin to 210..STILL not enough to get a PR[225])..but o well..solid reps, good form
-GMs were done stiff legged to work the hams a bit and get the back stretched out..were pretty easy...back does feel a bit better..like these...nice and easy, nothin heavy or PR type
-all in all a decent workout..more just reps with moderate weight, nothin too impressive

Damn, thatd be crazy holdin 600-700lbs, and then speed walkin with it!! :D Thatd be funny to imagine kind of, some guy just walkin around with 600-700lbs on his back. It'd be really funny if he was singin a retarded song too hahaha.
And sounds like the shoulders are gettn there, but still need to be careful on them. But im sure you know already what you're gonna do.

Good easy workout. Man those GM's are nice! Anything over 150 kills me lol. How do you perfrom your GM?s I think i might be doing them wrong.
ALso i heard alot about people doing squats later on to work there sore legs out and stuff. Whats the theory behind that. I would think it could possibley be detriminal to your body.

hehe thanks bro :) well tonight did them stiff legged...set up like a squat except wider grip with the hands..took a few steps back, kept the knees not locked locked, but legs stiff and knees "locked" per see...bent down til i was well below parallel, then up
if I do them regular, I bent the knees a bit to allow more weight and make it more squat and lower back based
:)
ill find a story later about the squats..think i hav some..but basically you get blood moving again in the area to help loosen it up...same idea as warming up i think...dunno, all olympic lifters squat 6x a week and continue to improve :)...and I did it, and the pain was GONE
so it works :)

Sorry to hear about that shoulder man, ive had pain like that and itsa a BITCH. You still thinking about getting it checked?
Lol you should of just started shruging his car or done some holds with it or something, that owuld of ben impressive!
hehe yeah
i told him just to sit and steer, id push
yeah, it sucks...prolly gonna get it checked while im home..everytime i go to a doc though i make the appt while it hurts, and by then its not as bad..so the range of motion is back and pain is gone, so its harder for me to explain exactly whats wrong to him...bc its always a few weeks to get in. Usually the pain comes and goes..and if it stays, then it comes nad goes in severity
I have lots more stories than this from the weekend, but this was the most interesting two hours or so
went to my friend kyles friday..he goes to Lincoln Christian College in Lincoln, Illinois. He's not a typical student there, he just went there bc he got in easy cause his dad went there and he wanted to get grades up to transfer schools(he was a 3.5 honors student in HS just hated goin to class in college lol) that place is stories to itself..im gonna start as we leave sat afternoon....we each had our cars FILLED with his stuff..trunks, back seats and passanger seats lol to bring him home bc its end of semester...
so anyway, we go to Dixie, this world famous truck stop to eat..bc he loves it there and HAS to take me..
our waitress comes over and is like smoking hot. so im very polite and smile alot and start convo whenever shes over (and she comes by alot) well we got the buffet, and at one point kyle asks the other waitress about geting new chicken out.
well the girl he asked had been talkin to our waitress all night, and she comes by to tell us just a few minutes...then goes right back to our waitress and theyre talkin and lookin at us. then our waitress comes by and says the same thing. anyway, eventually our bill comes...she sets down our joint bill and goes "here you go", then goes "and here YOU go" and hands me this different bill/reciept thing. so I open it..it Says her full name, phone number, "dont be shy", "your too cute" and "call me when noones around" :D
kyles like WTF that doesnt happen!!! Im like esp not with hot girls and me!
so im leavin and were payin, told her id call her tomorrow(today) or so and smiled and winked, she gave this sheepish, cute little infatuated school girl glowing smile
so then we're heading home..roads are snowy and icy....we come up to a stop sign that me and kyle both slid a bit at, but were smart enough to give time and we were fine..im waitin to cross bc i didnt know if cross traffic had a stop sign/was gonna stop...next thing I know the guy behind me hits me. not hard, but noticeable that he hit me. then he turns right and drives off.
so im like oh HELL no. So I slide the car around in the itnersection and take off after him... he keeps driving so I turn on my headlight flashers and pull him over with my fire dept lights.
After that he was REAL cooperative bc between that, blue/white beign POLICE colors in Illlinois, and my fire dept jacket..he thought he did a hit and run on a cop
So he gave me his name, addy, phone number, etc...very neatly written, and a picture ID to prove it was him..told him to call if there was any work to be done to get payment
hehe...so that was about TWO HOURS of my weeeknd...back to studyin for finals now
:)

note: dad got me a heating pad thing for my shoulder..used it all weekend...feel a bit better...went thru a full ROM each way pain free
hopefully it stays that way :) its been day to day
OMG
im SO DUMB
she wrote "if ur w/ somebody dont call" on the side...it confused me, im like wyhy not, am I gonna be telling u private stuff or someone? she didnt mean if im physically in anothers presence, she meant if I have a g/f

working with Amatuer_Wrestler to setup my off-season nationals prep plan
it will obviously be modified come spring when we get to 15/18 weeks out with more cardio and more specific
for now though goin back to what did me well before April/May contests, a bit modified
gonna be doin as follows:
Push days
Pull days
Power days + cardio
event days
push = chest, tris, delts
pull = back, bis, traps, hams
power = squat variations, any O-lifts, Push presses, etc
events= saturdays I train events at a few various places...also depending what I get for/make over XMAS i may add 1-2 events on power day too
cardio once a week for now(events are almost like a second day)
gonna do one ME push/pull day a week, and one DE of each..kinda like applying westside to strongman
so basically:
Monday: ME Push
Tue: ME pull
wed: power/event/cardio
thur: de push
fri: de pull
sat: events
sun:rest!
mucho props to amatuer for the timehes puttin into this to help me..he's a great dude and a good friend I talk to daily on AIM..feel like I should know the guy in real life by now...talk to him more than some of my best friends in real life
also props ahead of time to str8flexed, as were gonna work together over xmas break to get me a custom diet plan to get down to 225 for nationals to get to Lightweight status
and thanks to ALL of you who stop by here and comment in my journal...you are all a huge inspiration as VERY few of my friendslift, and even fewer appreciate or can understand TO critique my workouts

Awesome workout! The walkout looked kickass. Squat is comin along too! Was 330 even close?

330 i took to below parallel, started to come up from the hole, got to just past parallel and lost it
didnt train today because day was as follows:
out til 5am
slept in til 230pm
get up and lazing around
330pm->friend messages saying local tattoo shop was offering free tattoos with a donation to riley's childrens hospital
4pm->head down there, donate, get my raffle ticket..they were callin random numbers, winner must be present...all kinds of prizes...u can win as much as ur called until u get the free 1hr of tattooing..then ur ticket is thrown away....some ppl had been there all day....well 5 of us went...2 won quickly, 3 of us waited
630pm->left to go take my final(studied for it in the tattoo shop)
745pm->back to tattoo shop
12:30am->started my 6th tattoo
1am->went to friends house
5:30am->came home
lol....so that was my day..barely ate today either oops
but stood around the shop for 8 hrs....in all won a free tshirt, 10$gift card to Aeropostile(sp), a few other gift cards, a free piercing(getting my ears done tomorrow), 25$ gift card to the tattoo shop, and my tattoo
ill get a pic up tomorrow, but its a work in progress
it says "OVERCOME" in a slightly customized barb style text down my left rear tricep, delt to elbow....after xmas break were gonna finish it..gonna either fill it in pure black, or shade it and leave the centers of letters skin colored, then do black wavy design to accentuate around the outsides
guy was really cool who did it, he went to school with Brian, my WSM competing cousin...so he knew him and knew of strongman..so he said hes gotta make this a bad ass piece for when its on TV :). He said he loved the idea and such, its original, and thinks it will be a big project and turn out VERY cool
so impleased

Nice tat! Kick ass! Is there any reason you chose "overcome" as your tatto or anything?

its one of my themes in strongman and for nationals...i was born large but with premature lungs...overcame that, overcame being the weak fat boy in school, overcome everyone doubting me thruout life, overcome adversity in all forms, overcome shoulder issues, overcome my anxiety and fears, overocming limitations, overcoming genetics, overcome doubt, etc
basically, overcoming anything and everything that has, does or will stand in my path on teh way to my dreams

Damn BPP I came in here expectin a kickass workout from you, and all I find Is some lame convo about your tatoo, and some chick that wants you. I thought I was watchin saved by the bell or somthing :D j/k
Good squats. How did you get your squat up so quick? Maybe you could help me with my squat.
lmao bro...saved by the bell :D
basically just overcame my mental barrier...even though like 275 that day felt HEAVY, I believed i could do 315, so I put it on, and did it,..easily. Other thn that, just mixed it up alot..did back squats, the next time zerchers, the next time overhead, the next time pause in the hole, etc...just blasted my squats with everything I had basically :) but yeah, we could prolly help ya with the squat bro

notes:
I'm home from college, and forgot to send myself my PR text file, so thats why theres a ? next to PR for DB military lol
-DB m,ilitaries felt good today, i notice my only problem is on heavy ones getting it going after i clean it
-smith bench wasn't bad today, shoulders felt great on it
-DB skulls def work the triceps well!
-CG lockouts went great! After i get the hang of these these will go up...had about ~6" ROM give or take an inch or two(6is lowball figure)
-push presses were a bitch lol...havent done alot of endurance with it since before my April contest...UGH :p
-Front holds sucked today, was pretty dead by then lol
-overall happy with the workout, learned somenew things, saw old faces at my home gym, and hit some PR's
