Congrats man! Alcohol and bodybuilding just do not mix AT ALL. Sorry you drinkers, but it is really the worst thing you can do when you are trying to add muscle mass. Luckily, I stopped quite awhile ago..........January of 1998 to be precise! lol

Don't you mean the abuse of alcohol? I find that a glass of wine on a workout night seems to calm my nervous system down and helps me to sleep. Frank Zane was big on this also.
By the way 9second GTO, way to go!

Congrats man! Alcohol and bodybuilding just do not mix AT ALL. Sorry you drinkers, but it is really the worst thing you can do when you are trying to add muscle mass. Luckily, I stopped quite awhile ago..........January of 1998 to be precise! lolTrue, my progress jumped when I eliminated my nightly peppermint schnapps at bedtime. I liked it way too much and often HAD *way* too much of it, and all those sugars at bedtime were a terrible idea when trying to drop fat. Not to mention, it made me feel all goofed out during the next day's training session!
I even used to suck down one of those high-octane juice-sweetened malt liquors with caffeine, taurine and a lot of other "eens" like SPARK before training. It tasted like Tang with a kick. Geez, what was I thinking?!?
Some people like a bit of wine with dinner, I see nothing wrong with that if you can enjoy *in moderation.* That's where some people run into trouble.
Anyway, way to go, GTO!! 100% clean is awesome!! My hat's off to everyone who has done this.

I'll let someone more knowledgeable than me answer where exactly the cutoff is, but the fact is alcohol is treated by your body much the same way a poison is....it stops doing everything it was doing, and for us that would be good things like protein synthesis, glycogen storage. tissue repair. etc. and starts to fight off the alcohol. It isn't just the simple sugars (which add zero benefit to your caloric needs for the day), it is more the effect on everything else.
Maybe someone who is more of an expert can chime in on the difference between say 1 glass of wine and 3 glasses. That I'll admit I don't know.

I'm not an expert, all I know is most BB's are obsessive compulsive and moderation is not in their vocabulary or life style. In my family there are only two types of people. Those who drink and die in their fifties, and those who don't and live to be in their nineties. My granny is 95 and going strong.

My sister in law died of alcoholism this past year... It was a long time coming since she abused alcohol for many years. She ended up killing all the brain cells she had and in the end was brain dead so they had to pull the plug. She left a daughter and two little grandkids 4 and 6. They still ask where their granny is.. its hard on everyone in the family...
I am so happy you are staying away from it!!!! You should be very proud of yourself because it is such a hard thing to kick. Keep up the good work! And get the support you need when you need it!
Take care!!

I was on my way to ruin with alcohol. My girlfriend of 6 years at the time (now my wife) said it was booze or her. I saw the light. Got with the program and haven't had a drink since September 7, 1988. Eighteen years and a few months.

CONGRATS to YOU!! The 60 year old paint manager at our local hardware store is a great guy,but maybe not much longer. Drinking has cost him much in his life, marrage, past jobs, now can no longer drive (ever as I recall) finaly not just his health, but maybe now his life. No reason to list the details, his story is like many others.
He always said he could control it, but was fooling no one, maybe not even himself. If you know someone like this fellow, do the best that you can to make them see what they cant or will not.

Way to go, drinking really serves no purpose, I really wish they would go after it like smoking since it is so much worse for society.

I have recently slowed way down on drinking. I have probably drank at least a six pack every night since 1973. I have never increased nor decreased that number nor its frequency over that whole period of time with rare exceptions. In fact I switched from beer to whisky & diet 7up about two years ago because beer was bloating me badly. I used to have trouble sleeping without alcohol on the rare occasions that I did not drink. I used to start my "happy hour" around 4:30 pm and by 9:00 I was in bed.
About 6 months ago I didn't feel like drinking for a few nights. To my suprise I had no trouble falling asleep. I kept this up for a good many nights, and to my suprise I found myself disliking heavy drinking. I still have an occasional glass of wine with a meal. I have not touched whisky in a long time, and just recently I decieded to have a few beers one night. I woke up the next day with half a hangover and felt groggy most of the day.
To me this is not much different than when I quit smoking. When you give it up for a while then try it again you quickly develop a distaste for it. I'm not one of those type people that have one drink and fall off the wagon forever. I can take it or leave it at will. Some cannot do that, and to those that must abstain completely to stay clean and sober, it must be a terrible fight. So congrats to all that have kicked the habit.

What's funny and how do you arrive at the conclusion that there are "many" drunks here? Grow up.

I have a few glassess of sugar free OJ with some whiskey blend or brandy nightly. Never caused me any harm. I like it to ease the tension from the people I deal with daily. I work long hours sometimes 7 days a week.
Now when we say alcohol is bad for you. I disagree. I have a few freinds in that are doctors and phyciatrsts who will argue with you that a few nightly cause very little harm and is actually good for the system.
But I guess if you are on the verge of alcoholism it is better to stop then to try to control the amount you take in. I myself never really had that issue. I do not get drunk. I know when I am done. Maybe 2 glassess while finishing up my work then I am done.
Besides red wine is good for you it contains healthy stuff good for men.I think it is polyphenols

You don't understand, the ones that are /were drunks know what I am talking about.
