You could do that but you better make sure the chairs have a pretty damn strong back to them.

IMO you should just by a dip station. They only cost ~$100 brand new. You could probably find a used one for around $50.

If you have some saw horses around, use them. More stable than chairs. But check ebay and other sites for a chinup/dip tower. You can get some for under $100. Or just a dip station without the chinup part.

If you already have a cage you could "bring in" the self-spotters - by this I mean lay a couple of pieces of sturdy wood perpendicular to them (so that you have a square), and then using handles of somesort (barbells, for instance) you could put them in grooves on the wood perpendicular again (ie, parallel to the self spotters) and dip within the cage.

LOL. I always forget to read the bottom of those product pages. Anyone looking around, check ebay as well. There's usually dip bars and/or dip/chin stations listed there. Prices are ok.

dude, do what i did, its the cheapest, easyest and best PULLUP STATION to build. go to lows or home depot, and get 2 4x4 10 foot stakes, and some concreat mix. dig two 24'' holes, with one of those shuvels that digs squar holes ment for stakes. make SURE that before you mix and pour the concreat that the stakes are level and spaced 21'' from apart from outside to outside. once that is all done, find someone that knows how to weld. for the dip bars use 1.5'' tubing and have him weld it to some plate with a few 3/8'' holes drilled in it, and then just drill holes and bolt them up. and for the pull bar i'll tell u what i did. at first i copied the golds gym power tower bar, u know the one thats bent down at the ends. but i rarely used the angled portion of the bar, and i made it out of 1'' diameter tubeing, which i soon found out was a mistake because if you use it alot it gives you horrible callises. so i just made a strait bar from 1 3/4'' tubing, this takes away the callis problem and make the pullups much harder on your forearms. So when you make the pullup bar, weld peaces of 1 3/4'' tubing that are notched and 9'' long, to some plate and cut a 46'' peace of 1 3/4'' for the bar. fit the bar on top of those 9'' peices, and make sure they are space rite for the stake width, then weld it and bolt it . this is a killer set up and vary simple to do. good luck

do some pullups from a tree branch!

I did some on a tree in my backyard, but the limb curves upwards, so one of my arms Is on a angle and the other isnt, I dont think I would get even displacement.

I built a pullup station in my garage out of strut and 3/4 in pipe.Didn't have to weld anything. The thing is stoudt,I hang my heavy bag off it as well, never moves.Dipping station is in the works, shouldn't be too hard.
The reason I built one is I have more time than money.Otherwise I'd probably just by one.

Home Depot has these braces that are supposed to be used for shelving that say they are rated to hold 1000 pounds. I bought two of them and throw them over my girlfriend's Total Trainer. They work great. It would work attaching them to a concrete wall or attaching it to the studs. I'm 225 and it has held me plus 100 lbs. (my girlfriend jumped on my back!) without breaking. They only cost about $10 for the pair.
