Hey guys! I'm new to power-lifting, so just bear with me if I make any stupid mistakes... However, I'm NO stranger to weight-lifting itself; I've been going for about 4 years now. I WAS doing body-building for about only 2 months, but since i'm a track-runner (400m and 200m), I decided that bb wasn't the best road to take... And powerlifting would give me more explosion anyway. Besides, I think power-liftin' would be funner! :)
Here's what I've been doing:
Mondays: Bench
Flies
Abs
(I don't have an incline/decline bench.)
Tuesdays: Military Press
Lateral Raises
Bent-over Raises
Some 5-Star thingy (i'll explain later)
Wednesdays: Dumbbell Curls
Skull Crushers
Wrist Curls
Grip Stengthening Stuff
Thursdays: Lawn-Mower pulls
Bent-over Rows
Pull-ups
Abs
Fridays: Power Cleans
Lunges
Hamstring Dumbbell Curls
Calf-Raises
Ride Bike on heaviest gear for 10 minutes straight as hard as i can
(I know, you're thinking "WHY DON'T YOU HAVE SQUATS??" but i don't have a squat rack at home, and the most weight i have here anyway is 240 including the bar. i'm probably going to ask for one for christmas, or join a gym once i get my driver's liscense in two months.)

So go ahead and tell me everything I'm doing wrong, if I'm supposed to work each muscle more than one a week, if I'm missing some excercises (but it has to be barbell/dumbbell since it's all i have at home.), etc. AND WISH ME LUCK!!

Where's the journal? :D

Bowcum27
08-18-2003, 05:01 PM
My bad, i haven't written anything because i thought that since nobody was replying to what i said, then maybe nobody cared... but then again obviously it's a journal and people wanna see results, so sorry again.
well, the last time i posted i could barely do 3 sets of 8 with 125 for bench. but now i'm doin 3x8 135 on my light bench days and it's EASY!
Light Bench Days (Friday): Bench: 3x8 135 (EASY!)
DB Flyes: 3x8 25 DB's
Front DB Raises: 3x8 25 DB's
One-Arm Tricep Ext. 3x8 25 DB's

I know, the tricep/flyes are kinda heavy but i'll fix it up. i was only doin that cuz it was convenient using the same dumbbells for everything.
But TODAY, after school (yep, first day of school for 10th grade for me... sigh... a whole new year of boredom and having to be different around preps), squatting 245 3x5 was kinda hard for me, and i'm so disappointed cuz like last year i could do 245 eight reps easily. guess it'll take a few weeks before i'm back to where i was on squat, since i didn't do it all summer. (i COULDN'T do it, because i don't have a squat rack at home!!!)
SQUAT: 1x10 135 (just to get back in the flow)
1x6 225 (hard)
3x5 245 (really hard, but i did it, but i didn't go down far enough like i could last year urrghhh...)
1x5 225
1x5 205

LEG EXT.: 3x8 180
HAMSTRING CURLS: 3x8 90 (really hard, had to take a 5 second break between every 2 or so reps on the last set)

So i'm just goin heavy to begin with squats this year so i can get back with the flow of having alotta weight on my shoulders more quickly. well, gotta run, got homework to do (you older peeps go ahead and laugh.... but you knew what it was like to juggle power-lifting, school, homework, friends, and the church youth group all at the same time.)

Looked good bro! Glad to hear the bench is getting easier. Squats awesome.

Well I did bench yesterday, but this time at school, with the olympic-style weights (i have standard at home). doing 135 8 times for one set was pretty hard, so i wonder if it's because the bar was longer or something? and standard bars weigh 15 pounds, right?
well anyway, my work-out yesterday went okay...:

BENCH: 1X10 115
1X8 135
1x4 155 (needed help with the last two reps)
3x5 145 (first time i barely got all 5 up by myself, but the last few reps on the next two sets i needed some help)

INCLINE: 1x10 95
1x6 115
3x5 125 (only needed a little bit of help on the last set)
1x5 115
1x5 95

So lemme know what ya think about the bench deal.

AJ010
08-20-2003, 03:56 PM
A longer bar would be easier to lift on, because the weight is not as compact and dense. You were probably lifting less than you thought last time, OR it was just a bad day.

The workout still didnt look too bad. Maybe you just arent as good repping.

Bowcum27
08-21-2003, 04:29 PM
well, during football period today, i was just hanging around the field house weight room... and i decided to go ahead and eat my lunch real fast so i could do a quick workout before the period ended (i don't play football, so everybody was outside while i was inside with a few other guys), so i had lunch (just two pbj's).

Since I was low on time, the work-out was short. However, I've improved on my deadlifts!

DEADLIFT: 1x10 135 (warm-up)
1x5 185
1x5 205 (and i found that this was easy, so i decided to increase the weight)
1x5 225 (really hard, but i was still willing to go up)
2x5 235
I did two sets of 235 because i didn't really think that the 205 set counted. So I guess 250 really isn't my max after all!
anyway, between sets i decided to see how much i could max out dumbbell curl... and i did 55 with my right arm and 45 with my left. so it's gay that my left arm is like 10 pounds weaker, but im happy with 55 for my right! it's gonna be so cool when i can curl 60 with my right. :) but don't worry, i know how to make my left catch up with my right, it's just a matter of time.

Good job! Deadlifts and curls are lookin good. Damnit, you're gonna catch up to me on both lifts lol.

thanks steel, i appreciate you bein the only one that replies to me on here..
Well guys, I've forgotten to tell you that almost immediately after my first post in this thread, i changed my schedule:
MONDAYS: Squats
Leg Ext.
Hamstring Curls
Toe Raises (For the sake of track)

TUESDAYS: Heavy Bench
Heavy Incline

WENDESDAYS: Rest.

THURSDAYS: Deadlifts (my favorite lift :) )
Lunges
Goodmornings
Pinch Grips

FRIDAYS: DB Bench
3 Trisets: DB Flyes
Front DB Raises
Skull Crushers

SATURDAY/SUNDAY: Rest.

Well, that's it. And I'm thinking about starting my track work-outs next week in the evenings, so that shouldn't be bad at all for my progress in powerlifting... Or so I hope not. If it is, let me know ASAP.
I'll let you all know how my work-out goes as soon as I get back home from school! :D See ya around guys.

Hey, its what im here for :)

The routine looks good. Except, on tuesday, maybe add in an exercise or two for where you are weak on the bench....like if your triceps are weak, do rack lockouts or tricep extensions. If your shoulders are weak, do plate raises or militaries. If your lats are weak, do rows or pull ups.

Just an idea :)

Well, today was a long day, but I got through school alright. So I headed for the field house to do my favorite thing in the world. I started with DB Bench press today, and did only two sets when my twin brother comes in and says "Mike, I wanna go home (cuz we share a truck...), let's get outta here." i'm like "no way dude, i gotta finish this!" so he calls dad on his cell and gets him to make me go home... gah, made me so mad. so i got one more set of DB bench in, then went home and did my trisets. so it wasn't as good a workout as it coulda been.

DB Bench: 1x1 55 DB's (lol too heavy...)
1x8 40 DB's (too easy)
2x8 45 DB's

3 Trisets: DB Flyes x8 25 DB's
One armed DB tricep ext. x8 25 DB's
Front DB Raises x8 25 DB's

Well, the bright side of it is that 25 pound DB's seem lighter than ever now for DB Flyes, so i might bring it up to 30. wow, a month ago i could only do 30's on flyes like... 2 times barely. These deadlifts are really helping me out in fore-arm/hand strength! I've noticed that my traps are also gettin bigger than ever, making me look cooler. Man, I'm just so pumped up about joining the PL team this year, even though I've never done it before. The cool thing is that I don't dread this sport like track, because it's so fun... (only reason i'm doing track is because i have a natural gift at it, shouldn't let it go to waste ya know.)
heh, sorry to say so much, but it IS a journal... so i write all my thoughts... :D

AJ010
08-22-2003, 04:52 PM
Solid work bro. You'll kick ass on the PL team. That must have been a kick in the ass to have toi leave early.

You can drive at 15 years old? Man, what state you in?

What events do you run in track, and what are your best times?

Bowcum27
08-22-2003, 05:01 PM
Does my thing say that I'm 15? Well it's probly wrong cuz i turned 16 two 1/2 months ago... maybe i have to change it or somethin.
i run 400m and 200m dashes.
400m- 55.8
200m- 25.1
well, i'll admit that i actually ran a 56.5 on the 400m, but i did it without blocks and i also had to share a lane with somebody, and i was on the outside of him so i had a bad start... so minus those handicaps would probly get me a 55.8, or at least that's what my dad estimated. so, my real time's 56.5, but i'd like to go with 55.8... :D

Bowcum27
08-22-2003, 05:03 PM
Oh! I think I know what you're talkin about steel. I maxed out 300 on squats when i was 15, so yeah.

AJ010
08-22-2003, 06:25 PM
Wow, you got nice runs bro. My best 400m while pacing 1600m was 75sec. I should run it separately sometime and see how i do. I heard its one hell of a run

And also, what do you squat now? You've got an awesome squat

Bowcum27
08-22-2003, 07:38 PM
well, i think i might've been able to squat 315 at one time earlier this summer right after summer track season was over... but i hadn't done squats all summer since then, and now 245 is hard for me to do 6 times (as opposed to last year, when it was easy). But i'm comin back, and i'm gonna aim for about 375 by the end of this year. but if i have like really really good luck, then maybe i'll go for 405, which probably won't happen unless i work extremely hard. which i will. but i'd rather deadlift 405 than squat it, i dunno why... probly since it's my favorite lift.
so to answer your question, steel... i dunno. lol. but i'll let you know when i get back to my old self again, and then we'll start seeing REAL results. 300, 315, 350, 375... then 405

AJ010
08-22-2003, 08:07 PM
Hell yeah bro! Thats the way to see it

Bowcum27
08-25-2003, 04:31 PM
well, im gettin better on squat, as i said i would. :D

SQUAT 1x8 185
1x6 225
1x5 245 (alot easier than last time, so i raised the weight)
1x5 255 (not as easy as 245, but still willin to go up :) )
1x5 265 PR! (harder than i thought it'd be, didn't go down far enough on the last 2 reps)

LEG EXT. 1x8 four plates
3x5 FIVE plates PR!

HAMSTRING CURLS
3x8 two plates (HARD! but i have weak hams... that'll change soon.)

Well, it's encouraging to see that i'm improving. WELL, supper's callin my name, so gotta run... oh yeah, and before i go, i curled 50 with my left arm today. :) it's finally catchin up...

Well, neither mom or my twinbrother weren't willing to wait for me to finish my work-out after school, so i had to go early this mornin and only had 30 minutes to get my whole workout done... so i was in a hurry. I couldn't even think strategically on how to plan my work-out, and you'll see that as you read on.

BENCH: 1x8 115
1x6 135
1x4 155
1x2 165 (needed help)
1x1 175 (barely got it up, with barely any help)
1x7 135

INCLINE: 1x6 115
3x4 125 (i couldn't do it on the second set because my friend made me laugh :D )

MILITARY PRESS: 1x8 75
2x5 95 (didn't get the third set of 95 in because the bell was fixin to ring... as i said, i was rushed.)

Well, I'll have a better work-out on Thursday... If i can somehow get my mom or twin bro to wait for me after school, that is. If not, then I'll be doomed with a hurried deadlift workout in the moring as well.
On the bright side, I'm startin track practice tonight at 7:00. I'm aiming to break the school record in 400m dash, set by my big brother (50.64) when he was a senior. i'm a sophomore right now, so i have alotta time to get there, as long as i work hard. and since it's only august (well, fixin to be september), i'll have about 5 or so months to get really fast before the season comes up. well, gotta work on an essay, so see ya around.

AJ010
08-26-2003, 03:44 PM
Workout still looked good. I'm sure on the 175 bench you were just exhausted from prior sets. Were you trying to max it or just work out?

The military press and incline looked awesome as well. I think your shoulders are a strong point.

And good luck on the 400m run. Damn 50 seconds....thats fast.

thanks guys. i'll try my best.
last night i had a dream that i squatted 500... and it all seemed so real to me, and everything was so awesome... then i woke up and i'm like CRAP cuz i realized it was just a dream.
anyway, back to real life. i'm gonna be jogging for 20 minutes every night for the next two weeks to get back into track(i already started last night), then after the two weeks i'll start the sprinting stuff; but i've got to know something... about the jogging for 20 minutes a night for 2 weeks thing, it won't slow down my powerlifting progress anyhow, will it?

Haha. I had a dream that i was inclining 250 with ease, then i was gonna show off to you guys, then i woke up :( :D

About the jogging, it may slow it down a little, but not much. Take the lifting a little easier these two weeks i guess...maybe like do 1 speed day with squat and deadlift and bench, 1 heavier day with squat and bench or deadlift and bench. That would probably work good.

Bowcum27
08-27-2003, 02:37 PM
hmmm... well, i don't want my progress to be slowed down at all. but i HAVE to do this 20 minute jog thing for 2 weeks to be back into work-out shape for track... but after the two weeks are over and i start doing my sprinting stuff (like 4 reps of 300m dashes and stuff), THAT wouldn't slow it down, would it?

If you gave yourself sufficient rest time, you will be fine either way.

Nino
08-27-2003, 02:51 PM
Key is going to be getting enough quality food in you and getting enough good sleep. If you arent doing too much total distance, you should be all right.

The big thing is recovery...too much running and you just wont recover enough to keep the strength tip-top. Thats not to say you will get WEAK, but you might (probably) lose a little off your top end with a lot of running volume.

Bowcum27
08-27-2003, 03:14 PM
so if i jog once a week and sprint once a week... then i'm taking it that that means that nothing will happen to my program, right?

Bowcum27
08-27-2003, 03:37 PM
well... no offense, but these "probably's" i'm hearing don't sound too assuring. so in that case... i might just stop this jogging stuff altogether, because i don't wanna blow my first powerlifting year this year... but then again, i don't wanna put a stumbling stone in my way to the school record. but i love powerlifting. and since powerlifting and track seasons overlap... THIS IS GAY!!!

AJ010
08-27-2003, 04:03 PM
Well, you are on the team already, and i think that your sport should always come first, or at least make a priority.

Maybe compromise and do an olympic routine with the 3 powerlifts done once a week.

Bowcum27
08-28-2003, 06:09 AM
i'm just gonna jog once a week. as for now, i just wanna concentrate mainly on getting stronger. well, today i'm doin deadlifts, lunges, curls, and pinch grips... i'll let ya know how it goes afterwards!

hey, sorry i didn't post last night about my work-out; my computer was screwed up and the internet wouldn't let me get on. but here i am! :) i've just been DYING to tell y'all everything that happened yesterday!!
yesterday, i walked into the weight-room, and somehow i knew there was gonna be something different about this work-out... Strength-wise...

DEADLIFT:
1x8 135
1x5 205
1x5 245 PR!
2x5 275 PR! (it was so awesome... i was screaming like crazy and all the JV football guys were all watchin me... they were like "dude, hows that skinny kid liftin so much!??"... It felt good. :D )

DB CURLS:
3x5 45 PR! (did every rep successfully with my right arm... but my left could only get the first three reps on the first set, then only the first rep for each set after that. but i still felt great.)

The coolest part is (well i dunno, the deadlift thing was pretty cool... but this is even better), the hottest girl in the whole school was watchin me work-out. i dunno if she saw me doin the deadlift, which i HOPE she did lol, but she watched me do my curls... i was in a super tight under-armor shirt, and all my muscles were bulging from the work-out and all... and i knew this, so i decided to go say hi to her and talk a little while (mainly so she could get a close-up view on how muscular i was :) ), gosh it was like a dream come true... you NEVER expect the hottest girl in the world to come through and see you pumpin iron. it just never happens. but yesterday was my day.
i caught her lookin at me a few times today. :D Even if she doesn't like me, it feels good knowin she's looking...
And I'll let ya know how my work-out today goes (DB Bench with the trisets) after i do it. See ya later.

DB Bench: 3x8 45 DB's (really easy, but they're the heaviest DB's i have at home... so i just worked on the speed part on goin up)

DB Flyes: 3x8 30 DB's PR!

DB Front Raises: 3x8 30 DB's PR!

DB One-Arm Tricep Ext.: 3x6 30 DB's PR!

Ah... Still can't get over the awesomeness of yesterday...

Good luck on the squats! If you get 295x5, thatd be badass

Bowcum27
09-01-2003, 04:31 PM
well, there was no way i could've done squats today (holiday from school, YMCA's closed because of labor day, neighbor who has a squat rack isn't home...), so i decided to go ahead and swap squat and bench days with eachother for this week. here's how it went:

BENCH:
1x8 115
1x6 135
3x5 150 PR! (Didn't need any help. Didn't HAVE any help, in fact. Which is good improvement, judging that last week I couldn't even do 3x5 with 145 by myself.)

DB FLYES:
3x8 30's

I couldn't do incline because my bench doesn't incline at home, so I'll wait to do heavy inclines on Thursday. But I really wanna do deadlifts on Thursday because that's the only day that girl i told ya about comes through the fieldhouse (because she's the camera person for the football games)... Any suggestions? Because I need two days in between my squat and deadlift days. Oh well, I'll just deal with having to do incline on Thursday for this week.

AJ010
09-01-2003, 05:52 PM
Good job on the PR!!

Bowcum27
09-02-2003, 03:19 PM
Well, I didn't do 295 5 times today, but i still got a PR.

SQUAT:
1x8 185
1x6 245
1x5 275 PR!
1x5 280 PR! (I forgot to do another set... Doh...)

LEG EXT.
3x5 Five Plates

HAM CURLS:
1x8 two plates
2x6 two plates and a ten

I dunno if I went down far enough on 280, but I'm still glad to get it up five times.

one thing, though. my lower back is starting to hurt a little, not sore-wise. my dad thinks i might be lifting with too heavy weights. but that IS what you do in powerlifting, trying to lift the most weight possible! so i need some advice before my back gets too bad. thanks.

Bro, do you wear a belt and preferably knee wraps on your heavy squat sets? Trust me, ive learned from experience. Wear safety equipment! My backs better now, but my knees are ****ty. Please be careful. Whats the pain like?

well actually i DO wear a belt. i take in alotta air before i go down so my lungs can support my back. the pain's not bad, but i can feel it like just startin to form on the right side of my lower back in a very small area. and my knees are just fine, so i don't think wraps will be necessary... unless you really insist that i get em. actually i think i'll get em anyway. lemme know about the back thing too, like what else you suggest i do for it, because i have heavy deadlifts this friday. i really wanna go for a PR, like 315x5 or something dude! but if the back thing's really that serious... yeah, just lemme know about it. thanks!

Hey bro. I would get the wraps anyways. You're only 131, and you're squatting over 300. Thats some serious weight for someone your weight, and you should consider wraps for heavy heavy sets only.

About the back, man, i know how you feel. I really wouldnt go for the deadlift PR unless you are better. Do hyperextensions and reverse hypers to get blood flowing to your back. If you are not better by friday, DON'T lift. Trust me, from experience, itll be better to take it safe.

WELL, today my back is feeling a little better, still needs a little bit of improvement though. so i did DB bench today, and didn't do much because i was rushed.

DB Bench- 1x8 50's
1x8 55's
1x7 60's (missed the 8th rep)

lol, and that's it... well, i messed around with the dumbbells a little bit, doin like one set of curls, on set of two reps for one-arm tricept ext., etc.... the fact that the football team was in there discouraged me from goin all out everything, because there are some guys that would make fun of me and stuff. tomorrow, if my back's feeling better, those deadlifts are MINE!!!

well, my twin bro benched 200 today. gah. he weighs 140 i think, but he's no bigger than me. and i'm goin up to 135, so i guess that means i barely have a chance in competition now (judging by the national fresh.-sophomore high school records for that class)... man! i was looking so forward to powerlifitng this year, but now i'm kinda unsure if i'll do good or not. cuz this super strong kid in my grade that weighed 142 last year got killed in competetion, and i'm not that much farther from that weight class. no, i'm still doing powerlifting, but i'm just discouraged, that's all.

Bow, don't be discouraged man. It's dosen't have to be about beating other people, it can about bettering yourself.

I understand some folks are just very competitive, but turn your love of the iron into a quest for self improvement and it'll last you your whole life long. Good luck getting through this bout of discouragement. We're pullin' for ya.

Well, things are looking better! the main thing being that i'm 130 pounds now! (turns out my scale was off zero when i weighed as 135).

Did deadlifts today... So glad to be back in the game!

DEADLIFTS:
1x8 135
1x5 225
1x5 275
1x5 280 PR!

CURLS:
3x5 45's (gettin better with my left arm! :) )

After my second set of curls, i got a 70 pound dumbbell in each hand (140 total) and walked all the way across the gym and back.
They're called farmer walks, right?
Well, hey guys... I was noticing... I mean, I've never heard anyone mention God on here, and everybody cusses like crazy and all... I'm just curious, but are very many of yall Christians?

Well, my bench is gettin better! :)

BENCH:
1x8 115
1x6 135 (felt like i could've done it like 12 times)
3x5 155 PR!

Actually Steel, I wasn't upset about my bro maxin 200, i was actually happy for him. i was just discouraged about gaining weight. but now that i know that i weigh 130, life is good... feels cool workin out with weight 25 pounds more than my body weight, although that's like nothing to most of you guys lol... but hey, answer my question i asked at the end of my last post!!

well steel, go to www.thekristo.com (if you typed in www.kristo.com without the "the" then it would take you to a psychiatrist website... lol), and just watch the slide-show it shows. i know it might seem a little cheesy but it's just what it's all about.

Well guys, I made MAJOR PR's on squat today. I wasn't lyin when i told ya I'd get better at squats, steel.

1x8 185
1x6 245 (extremely easy)
1x5 275 (VERY easy compared to last time!!)
1x5 300 PR!! (STILL EASY!! I was on fire!! How had i gained so much strength since last time??)
1x5 315 PR!!! (Finally, it got pretty dang hard. But i did it, although i might not've gone down far enough on two or three of the reps.)

I'm so glad to have done 300 five times, especially 315!! I prayed before each set that I'd do it successfully, and boy did I get my answers... That was the first time in my life that I had even got under the bar with three plates on each side. First time ever. And now according to the Max Calculator on some website, typing in 315 for the weight and 5 for the reps, my squat max should be 365 :) I don't know whether to believe it or not, but dang that's pretty awesome. I'll go ahead and put it as my max in my stats though.
One thing though, my back started hurting again after the work-out. This time I'm sure it was because of the heavy weights, because I used a belt and kept proper form. Oh well, I'm sure it'll heal, because I've already been through this.
Next week is my heavy week!! Here are my goals:
SQUAT: 3x2-3 330 or more
BENCH: 3x2-3 170 or more
DEADLIFT: 3x2-3 300 or more
Well, pray for my back to get better, and let's hope that I can do those weights! See y'all guys around.

thanks guys. i'll try my best.
last night i had a dream that i squatted 500... and it all seemed so real to me, and everything was so awesome... then i woke up and i'm like CRAP cuz i realized it was just a dream.
anyway, back to real life. i'm gonna be jogging for 20 minutes every night for the next two weeks to get back into track(i already started last night), then after the two weeks i'll start the sprinting stuff; but i've got to know something... about the jogging for 20 minutes a night for 2 weeks thing, it won't slow down my powerlifting progress anyhow, will it?

I had a dream I squatted 864 a few nights ago...it was nuts :D

Where the hell you been man, whats up?
