Have any of you ladies been on birth control? I've just been put on Ortho-Tri Cyclen birth control and I am afraid it will hinder my performance, in more ways than one. I'm afraid of gaining weight and/or having a complete lack of energy which will ruin my workout results.
Have any of you guys had that problem (or know someone who has)?
If so, what did you do?
Are any of you on it as we speak? Any problems?
Just wondering, because so far I'm okay, but I've heard a ton of horror stories, like "I gained weight" and "I had no energy" "I craved foods"
Ahhh!
before pregnancy and after I was and on the same for 10 years with absolutely no problem you mentioned

My girlfriends sister gained around 15 pounds. She was on ortho novum. My girlfriend was on ortho tricuycline and she got pregnant so be careful on what you take.

whoa, pregnant? how'd she manage that? She must have skipped pills or not waited long enough for them to start working before she was having sex.

I take a very low dose pill called Yasmin. I have had no weight gain, etc and no side effects of any kind at all.
I have been told that weight gain because of birth control is more or less a myth. It can occur if you are not on the best on for your body, which will cause your hormones to be a little out of balance or because you may have a tendency to retain more water than normal.
As for getting pregnant, most of the modern pills are so low dose that you need to take them within 2 hours of the same time every night. But then again, as long as you have sex you take the chance of getting pregnant.
Good luck!

Good god yes, ive had problems. AS soon as i started Ortho-Tri Cyclen (when i was 18) I noticed my appitite increase. I never had weight issues before, and it seems ever since i started that crap i ended up gaining weight. Honestly, that stuff made my body change.
Im on Allesse now. ITs a much lower dose of hormones, and i find i dont get the whole appitite problem. Im 23 now, and ive tried various kinds of birth control. I strongly recomend changing your prescription. Even my doctor agreed with me.
Good luck with all your goals :)

ok Birth control is 99% affective, if not better. IT stops ovulation (if i remember correctly). The only way a person can get pregnant if you dont take birth control properly.

They have recently proven that birth control pills do NOT cause weight gain. It may cause a little fluid retention in some people.
However, like Polish Girl mentioned, it can cause increased appetite. The only reason people gain weight is because they eat more! If you keep an eye on what you are eating like I am sure you do anyway, you'll be fine.

I am on ortho tricyclen Lo and in the last few weeks I have noticed a big increase in my appetite. Is there a better one out there? I thought by taking this low dose one that it would be ok, but it's not. I haven't had any weight gain probably because I haven't given into the cravings, but I don't know how long I can take this. Has anyone tried Cyclessa?
Thanks
Lisa

Actually, I've heard that an equal percentage of women *LOSE* weight on the pill....so it's not all bad! I didn't gain anything when I went on the pill, though I was kind of cranky and aggressive the first month.

WEll, regardless all womens bodies are different. One thing i know Ortho Tri-cyclen made me hornier, but Allesse does the opposite.
One thing is for sure, if your appetite does go up.. will be subject to eat what you may not want to. And, Even if you do not notice it, you may even over eat.
I think all men should take the birth Control pills from now on. As women we have WAY too many things to bare in life. Furthermore, I would tell anyone not to take any form of hormone therapy. Who knows what that horse urine is doing to our bodies?

I can confirm the above… Before that I took Diane 35 for 8 years: had no weight gain, but horrible water retention that started about 7-10 before I had to get my period and went away eventually, but still bothered me. I don’t have the problem with Yasmin now.

For what it's worth (I'm a guy), I will tell you that my girlfriend has tried numerous different types of birth control --the pill, the patch, depot-Provera.
The progestagen (progesterone-like) component of many birth control pills can stimulate appetite. Everyone is different in their sensitivity in this regard. My girlfriend, and others before, never had an issue with that.
I recommended my girlfriend try the estrogen/progestagen patch being that I had seen study where women lost body fat and increase lean body mass while using it. The women using the conventional estrogen/progestagen pill gained body fat, in contrast.
Respectfully,
Rob
Believe it or not, some women can lose (others gain) breast size while on birth control medications.

I went on mircette 4 yrs ago. I never experienced any side effects what-so-ever. No weight loss, no cramps, no mood swings nothing. My doctor chose that one for me in particular since I'd been on medications for migraine headaches since the age of 10 and many bc pills aggravate that condition. Mircette however, is known to be a very gentle and the least likely to cause side effects. Anyway, that's another one you can ask your doctor about.

Most birth control does not appear to hinder progress in LBM in women, but it can ad some BF in some people. The often increase in breast size is a plus to some and a minus to others. I am at a loss as to why more women dont use IUDs which today are small, safe, and non hormonal. Seems to be the birth controll method women forgot....

I got pregnant twice on tri-cyclen....no one believed I was taking it after the first pregnancy, so It was fed to me every day at the same time by my boyfriend who was not looking forward to more kids...I ended up pregnant again. My body became immune to the birth control. I also had 2 miscarriages on it. I would suggest you change the type you are taking. Not sure myself which works best with bodybuilding or weight gain being as I never had such a problem because of an extreme high motabolism. But it is possible to become pregnant on this birth control..I did twice. I did take Ortho novum and never had a problem.
You may want to consider some other sort of birth control too..maybe a diaphram or IUD. These are great methods too, but with the diaphram you cannot have spontaneous moments being as you have to use it just before intercourse.
Good luck.

One of the major problems of birth control pills is they do such a good job of fooling you body that it is pregnant that you may actually "feel" pregnant. The pill will fool your hormones into holding onto water (antidiuretic effect) so it can invest the extra fluid into building the placenta and the amniotic sac. The problem is all this fluid that your body is holding onto is going to be in your vascular system. Ok, you're saying "Why do I care about that". Well, imagine you have a pump ( the heart) that pumps so many gallons of fluid a day under a certain pressure. Now, add more fluid and make the pump work just as hard. That is why when women first get pregnant they may spend the first 2 to 3 months taking cat naps. Their heart is having to acclimate and as a result women are more tired (they feel like they have been walking up a gradual incline all day-same amount of distance but more rigorous). So lets say you are like most women and have no problems getting use to a little water weight gain (you watch your salt intake) and you are doing fine. Another problem is with some added fluid you may notice some shortness of breath until you get use to it or you are lucky to avoid it altogether. Some- thing should not be used with the pill- smoking:don't smoke (or cut way down). If you have symptoms that last for a long time (shortness of breath, fatigue, irritability) and do not resolve,go back to your doctor and see if there is a lower dose or another drug. Finally, and most important- a little known fact is the pill can cause blood clots. More fluid in your body changes the viscosity of your blood and therefore can make your more at risk for a blood clot. It is rare but it does happen and women don't know what is going on. This may affect you and you try to use diuretics to get the water out for competition (do you compete?). The water is out, but your blood viscosity may be different. Blood clots land in the calves and in the lungs. If you get one in the lung it may be fatal (not always). Do you remember Cory Everson having one several years back in her calf? Now she takes an aspirin (baby) a day. wannabeMs.O (RN)

I prefer the pill also. (Snip, snip also sounds like an excellent option -- :D)
I've been on LoEstrin since I was 20 and I'm now 42. I've had no problems whatsoever. In fact, my gyno thinks it will help alleviate many of the symptoms associated with peri-menopause whenever that happens. :D Something fun to look forward to -- LOL!

I don't think anything is 100% effective, except absenteeism. My cousin is a product of a vasectomy.

Although the birth control pill package inserts say to wait one week before having unprotected sex most of the OB/Gyn docs that I have worked with recommend that you take it for a full month to be on the safe side.

I had the same problem with water retention. Yasmin is great because the progesterone component of the pill (each pill company uses a slightly different compound) is a mild diuretic (kind of like aldosterone). It is the only pill that has this anti-edema action and I have had no more bloating issues since I switched.

I've had neither increased appetite or weight gain on either one of the pills I've been on (Ortho Tricyclen Lo or Ovcon 35). They even cleared up my skin problems. I'm giving serious thought to stopping them however, b/c on both I've had breakthrough bleeding (the Ortho I had it after 4 months, Ovcon the first month). I'd rather deal with my minor skin problems than bleed 2-3 weeks out of the month

has anyone experienced any side effects from Cyclessa? my doctor switched me over to this one 2 weeks ago because I was having bad cramps on the ortho tricyclen lo but since I have been on the Cylcessa, I seem to be extremely hungry. The progestin in this is Desogestrel (Sp?) which I know has a high progestional activity.

long time ago, was on ortho-tri-cyclen and had no problems with it. however i did get pregnant :) - skipped a couple pills. they tell you you're still "covered" (word they used) with missing two pills but don't necessarily believe it! and i wonder....they say 99%, so is it truly 99 percent effective, meaning 10 out of every 1,000 will get pregnant on it OR do they just say 99% insteaad of 99.5% or even %100 percent as an unofficial disclaimer if you know what i mean?
seems everyone will react differently so you can't rule it out til you've been on it. but NO reason to live with an increased appetite if y our metabolism doesn't adjust either!
sigh, i just divorced my vasectomied husband, i need to get on something now too............pooey!

Here's a crazy thought!
Every male at maturaity age, should have a vasectimy, but before doing so, he "makes a deposit" then when he and his partner are truely ready to have children , the female is fertilized with the mans "deposit".
