I am a female and I want to start on the road to fitness competitions. I was wondering if I need to be experienced in tumbling (gymnastics) and if it is to late (age19) to start learning?

In the NPC, gymnastics aren't mandatory, but it helps show balance, strength, and flexiblity. I am 25, and doing my first competition later next year. I am starting gymnastics lessons this week to give myself a year of training. It would be awesome if I can eventually do a backhandspring or more. Gymnastics lessons will help to build strength in lifting your own body weight, and also work on your flexiblity, which is a big factor in most of the moves.
I say go for it, you're still young. Monica Brant didn't start gymnastics training until her early 20's. Check out some gymnastics clubs around your area. Most should offer private lessons. Good Luck, and Go For It!!!!! I hope this helps.

Not required but a background in gymnastics, dance, or cheerleading helps a great deal, especially at the higher levels.

There are a few girls who do not have a gymnastics background who are competing on the pro level in fitness. What they lack in gymnatics, the make up in dance, strength moves and flexability. Being able to tumble is a plus, but it is not manditory. Brenda Kelly was almost 40 years old when she started fitness competitions, and although she had extensive dance training, she had no prior gymnastics schooling. She learned a few gymnastics moves, mastered the manditories, put in the dance moves, and did very well. Depending on where you live, there are many camps and seminars that you can attend. Marc Castillo is in the Northwest, as is Tanji Johnson IFBB Pro, Jennifer Henderschott is out of Ohio, and there are a few others, who would be happy get you on the right foot. If you would like extra information such as web addresses or email listings, feel free to email me at: Christinasummers@charter.net. Good Luck!
