New Mexico has quite possibly the worst diet in the nation. The oil rich and fat rich mexican foods just add to the fact that I personally think this state has the most obese people per square mile. But if anybody does lift and is in the New Mexico area just let me know. I dont know that many people that do and meeting some of you is quite a rare experience. So just let me know. PM me or email me at BigDRed@bodybuilders.com

I used to live in NM, close to ABQ (east mountain area) as well as Carlsbad. IMHO, New Mexico didn't have too many fat people and the diet wasn't too terrible. I think that the nice weather makes it easy to stay active. Now that I live in Pittsburgh, it constantly rains everyone is fat and the food here is terrible-- Pierogies (Potato-filled pasta dumplings smothered in butter and served with sour cream, Primanti bros. sandwiches (thick toast with some sort of corned beef, or chicken, french fries, cole slaw). They put french fries on salads, and drink at any chance they get (especially sporting events). I'd rather eat the tasty mexican food over the weird stuff they have up here. You can always make healthier versions of it too.
And I agree I don't see many people from NM and many people have never even heard of such a state and don't know that it is part of the United States. Sad.

my grandma asked if she needed a passport when she came out here the first time from Pittsburgh. I love Pittsburgh - one of my top 5 cities but not because of the food.

I agree the diets here can be pretty bad. I live up in the 4 corners area. There are so many overweight, REALLY OVERWEIGHT. people here. Its definitely a cultural thing around here.

Hi everyone,
Ive been to this site a number of times but never bothered to register. I just came across this post about people in NM so I decided to actually join. I used to live out in ABQ but left when I ended up in a bad spot with the economy. I plan on returning to ABQ asap so I hope to get to know some of you NM people :)

I can assure you that New Mexico doesn't have the fattest people. Texas does! I currently live in San Antonio, and people here are MORBIDLY OBESE!
Fat people here don't consider themselves fat. They consider themselves normal or average body type. Hahaha! The mexican food here has everyone incredibly robust! The fact that every female here has atleast 2 kids doesn't help w/ fitness either.
I am PCSing to Holloman, and I heard it was similar to San Antonio. I'm pretty upset about it.

According to 2011 stats:
San Antonio ranks #7 in top 10 fattest cities in America!
I'm really hoping Alamogordo isn't as bad.
http://www.menshealth.com/mhlists/metrogrades-fattest-cities/metrogrades-fattest-cities-albuquerque.php#slidetop
shows that ABQ is one of the leanest cities in America. Wow! I envy ppl that live in ABQ.

Been a few months since this has been posted on!
I worked up at Holloman in Alamogordo but my gf and I live in Las Cruces bc she works at the Zoo in El Paso.
I haven't been to any of them gyms around here as my community I live in "Casa del soledad" Has their own gym, which for a complex gym is pretty nice. We do however go hiking and I go by myself sometimes and go trail running. If anyone knows of any good places to hike let me know!
