I've played RTS games my whole life, but I was interested in something on a grander scale, so I decided to check out Civ V...and I don't get it. What am I supposed to do? Why does my big city only have 1 citizen?

grow that shiat son! Get some cot damn farms to bulk up your citizens, if you force them to cut, they'll get angry, need to look like Arnold nom saying?

Civilization 4 is a better game.

And 1 citizen =/= 1 R/L citizen, its like an extended metaphor. I don't want to micromanage the labor duties of 100,000 citizens + nomsayin.

Civ 5 is a great game...expac coming out soon. I suggest you try the tutorial first though. ANd ya the first few turns are going to be somewhat laborious until you grow a worker/settler so use them to explore your area and find resources.

build monument and then get shtload of workers
make sure you get animal husbandry and that science what lets you build horsemen early in the game

horsemen are overpowered as phuck and you can steamroll all the annoying fkers early in the game

also build all the money making buildings, its good to have some gold in your pockets when others start wars against you

set your first warrior on autoexplore, you wont get attacked too early in the game
and just build lots of workers and put them on auto upgrade, they will build roads and do everything to keep your civilization in top condition

I personally prefer the Total War games over Civ 5. I have a friend who likes to play Civ 5 online with me all the time, and I play along, but I'd much rather play Shogun 2 or Napoleon.

Im a semi-noob at the Civ games. The strategy I use is just to crank out food as much as I can. It's a pretty slow way to play through most of the game, but I find that once I hit the modern era no one can match the output my cities have and I just steamroll everyone. Interested to hear some strategies in here!
