anyone in this boat before? if so how long should I wait before I start lifting?
also it's a torn meniscus...I was told it's a minor surgery of knee surgery.

Minor surgery is what they do on someone else. Listen to the doctor, don't go with any other's experiences. Every person and injury is unique.

I've had meniscus surgery before.
1) Don't be too eager to get back to training. Wait until you are good enough. Seriously!
2) Follow the rehab procedures and do not forget to do them!
3) It will probably be 4-6 weeks before you start training.
I would also suggest doing unilateral work initially, meaning lunges, bulgarian squats, etc. Those will work each leg and will strengthen both legs. Whereas if you start off with a squat the stronger leg might take over for the weaker leg and do too much work. Once you reach a sufficient level of strength in the leg then I would incorporate squats.
