I have taken creatine before and loved the benefits but not so much the bloating. So I stopped taking it but just read an article that said it could have been the brand.
Any suggestions on a brand or amount of creatine that kept you from retaining water? Or did simply just using a water pill help fix that? Thanks!!

kind of trial and error for most people. try a different brand or a different kind. and no need to take more than 2.5 mg / day.

Creatine is creatine.
You're SUPPOSED to gain water weight, but if you're talking about abdominal bloating and GI problems and not just retaining water, make sure your creatine is dissolving properly. Side effects with the GI are usually associated with excess water being drawn in to break down undissolved creatine.
I had those same side effects, switched to micronized and started using hot water, and haven't had any problems since.
Edit: get the cheapest creapure you find, brand doesn't matter.

There's no difference between brands.
Water retention should primarily be intracellular.
Some people report minor negative reactions to monohydrate - in which case you can try one of the 'designer' creatine products (kre-alkalyn for one), which, although the mechanism of action is no better and they are more expensive, may alleviate some of the issues.

When I'm cycling on creatine I just make sure to drink extra water and pee it all out basically. You go like every hour but, ehh, it helps from abdominal bloat.

If you don't retain water, it's NOT working. That's what it does. The water is intra cellular (inside the side cell) which is an anabolic stimulus and why you use it. Companies/people claiming "no bloat" are either trying to sell you something, are ignorant of the actual mechanisms by how creatine works, or both. Vid series on most of the Qs on creatine, including the "bloat" issue:
