My computer screen froze randomly and made a constant screeching sound until I manually powered it off. I let it cool down and tried to turn it on and got

Warning !!! The previous performance of overclokcing is failed, and the system is restored to the defaults setting
Press any key except "Del" to enter SETUP...

Then I realized my USB's were working, so I couldn't press anything on my keyboard to enter the settings. So I had to manually power off again. I then reset the CMOS. Now when I try topower it on, the fans power on and power off.My ram has a red glow/led, and it powers on and off along with the fans also so it seems like its getting some power but I dunno.

I did overclock my 4870 a while back and there hasn't been any problems.

My friend had a similar problem recently, everything would power on for 1-3 seconds and then it would shut off. Try unplugging power and taking out cmos battery. After a while put in a NEW cmos battery and start it up. If you are still having trouble booting past bios you could try booting from a windows cd and reinstalling.

Get an old keyboard and plug it into your ps2 port (mouse if bios supports it).

Take Ram out, and only have 1 stick in the slot recommended in your motherboards manual as the default place for only 1 stick. (mine is the 2nd one from the left)
does this work? This should at least fix your Ram error, then after a full boot back into your desktop. Turn off computer and then put your other sticks back in.

I'm not there to see whats happening but i'd start testing individual pieces of my rig with a working PC. (if you can't get anything to work)

First unplug ram and power on the system. If you get no system beeps your board is toast. If you get system beeps chances are the board is functional. Also, try a different power supply. It's probably not likely, but are any capacitors bad? google bad capacitors

if it was a failing cmos battery all it would do is make the bios settings revert to defaults when the system lost power... sounds like either a nuked board or a bad PWS

There no more powering on and off problem

I just tried the RAM thing, no motherboard beep

Took a quick look at the capacitors, doesn't look deformed but I didn't do a thorough check of them

normally I would agree however about 5 days ago I fixed my friends rig who was having the same problem by replacing the cmos battery.. lol it was kind of odd.

yeah ive never seen that before... ive seen systems losing their bios settings and thats all... maybe the battery was out putting too much power or something, because a dead one should never make a system not post

Nope it isn't working ATM, I tried taking out the ram to see if I would get a beep from the motherboard but no luck there. I don't remember what the motherboard is, as I wasn't the one that bought the computer. It's a red MSI but I don't know how to look for the specific model. It was bought around the late 2009 or around 2010 range. Hence the 4870

if the motherboard doesnt beep when running with no ram its a bad board... so either see if is replaceable under warranty or its time for a new one

Would a new board just fix everything?

well its not guaranteed nothing else is bad.... its possible a flakey power supply took out your board, or that your cpu may have been toasted with your board, etc... if you dont have the spare parts to test everything for sure it may be worth taking it to a shop that does, but chances are a new board would get it working
