That was very moving to read....I admire his calmness of tone and the utmost dignity, despite all he and his family had gone through. Thanks for sharing this.

Are you some kind of hippy liberal from California?
:D Great read though. I love the tone subtle sarcasm. I think he got his point across well.

After I read the letter, I was..like.."Wow! This is amazing!".. Then I was like... "Wait a minute. Slaves were UNEDUCATED and ILLITERATE. So how could he have written a letter free of grammatikkal and punk-chasion errors. I mean, this letter looks like it was written by an English major with a minor in pot smoking from a major university." So I researched, because, well, you can't trust everything you read on the net so you gotta filter out the BS..
I am happy to report that the letter is indeed LEGIT and AUTHENTIC. The message came from the heart of Jourdan, as it was dictated to the person who actually wrote the letter. (Who cares if Jourdan didn't actually 'write' the letter physically. It came from his HEART - and that's all that matters.)
Jourdan and his wife had four children - and all of whom received an education. (And no, Obama is NOT the great, great, great, grandson.)
It was a moving letter. Just shows you how people had CHARACTER back then.
Very nice find. Thanks for sharing.

No, I'm some kind of hippy liberal from Florida...not srs...well partially. I'll let you figure which part.
The sarcasm is probably the best part.

Dear Boy,
I'm kinda sorry for stripping you of your basic human rights and having you as a piece of property for your entire life. If you can overlook this minor issue, I'd love to have you come back and do the exact same shxt that I forced you to to against you will but this time I'll give you some money and won't hold you prisoner till the next work day,
Sincerely,
Ex-Massa

$11,680 was the amount Jourdan said the colonel owed him in 1865. Does anyone know how much that would be worth today?

if I was a slave owner in those days, I would have formed a basketball team and told the other slave owners to form teams too, so that the plantations could play each other to help bolster confindence and pride within each plantation and help pass time more quickly ...
I'm sure life as a slave was a grind and every bit of entertainment would help...

Speaking of slavery, you all know the song 'Amazing Grace.' It was written by a former slave trader John Newton. He wrote the song after he left his 'profession.' Listen (or read) the following:
Amazing Grace how sweet the sound
That saved a wretched like me.
I once was lost
but now am found.
Was blind but now I see.
He ultimately realized how wrong he was, so he wrote the song to repent. The point is that a great sinner like John gave mankind hope.
Fast forward to today. Amazing Grace is a very popular church song. Unfortunately, it is also a popular KKK rally song. (No, I'm not a member of KKK, as I don't quite meet the criteria if you know what I mean.) How a hate group like KKK loves the song Amazing Grace is beyond me. It's one of those 'WTF moments' I guess.

I work with a guy who is a civil war historian. He brought up an interesting point in that at our age, we have been touched by someone related to a civil war veteran. He stated that the Generals and such often took young wives even when they were in their 70's-80's. If the wives lived into their 80's, their deaths would have been around the 1960-1970 time frame depending on when they were married. Amazing to think this really wasn't so long ago.

it is referring to how the government wants to keep some segments of society down so they will continue to vote for them. They encourage a system of government dependancy and in return they expect votes. didnt think i had to spell it out but its a certain political party that does this more then the other.
White or black it doesnt matter, its the policy i was pointing towards.
sorry for any confusion.

Are you posting this to try to explain that slavery wasn't as bad as we think it was? Have you lost sight of the fact that people were allowed to OWN other people as property? I hope your "interesting" comment meant "look at how some idiot tries to justify enslaving another race."

Actually, I think there's plenty of that for everyone.
Rather than ask people what they are meaning to say in the form of a question they have to deny, why don't people just ask what they are saying rather than assume whatever it is that is convenient for them at that moment?

My favorite quote from this.

Exactly. There are good aspects of slavery? Taking people from another country, half of them die on the boats over to here, force them to work without pay, beat the men and rape the women. And some how this is twisted into a political thing?

Talk to Africans, as they are the ones who first used slavery for personal gains and tribal dominance. Or not..... :p

I love how this point always comes up in a conversation about American slavery. Like this somehow legitimizes the actions that occurred. We are aware Africans had slaves, Native Americans had slaves & just about every other race/culture has done this. But, you clearly have missed the point.
