I started off in a chain gym as a fitness instructor and then moved onto personal training. I only did this for experience. The job I got was through a mate, so fortunately didn't have to send an application in. It is tough times, and a lot of applications are sent out.
Keep trying, or if you are confident enough now, get your own business in check. It takes work, but you will get there.

Starting off in a gym helps to give you experience and teaches you the ropes.
But, it may be difficult getting hired without training on the resume.
Train a friend or relative in your spare time for free and put them down on your resume and ask them to be your reference - that should be what you need to get your foot in the door!

By far the best and fastest way to get into the industry is starting from the floor up. Get a few hours a week cleaning equipment, selling memberships, talkin with members, etc. From that build up to an exercise class of your choosing. (I went with cardio/strength mix cercuit style) once that starts getting popular use it to springboard your PT sales. Offer exclusive rates to the peope that attend your class. (make sure you charge SOMETHING for the class... even if its like 5 bucks, or "pounds" in your case).
Best thing to do is to get infront of people and exude confidance in your craft. Sadly you cant do that when no one is around. Get in the door and then work it hard.

Have you been interviewed and denied? Or have you not even got that far? Give us some more details and we'll be able to see what might be the problem.

Without question I would start out at a gym that runs a successful PT program. Get successful within that program, learn all of their systems and tools and become independent later. You cannot pay for the experience that you can gain working for someone who is already good.
