Leaning out goes back to being in the right deficit and giving yourself enough time to lose the fat. Using mrps is a personal choice. I prefer to use whole foods, but occasionally throw in a protein shake if I don't have anything prepared.

Like kimm4 said, I think that I would gravitate more toward whole/natural foods the closer I got to a competition, but thats mostly because I know my calories would probably be fairly low, and I'd be a lot happier eating a large 250 calorie meal of leafy greens, lean proteins and tasty tasty fats to fill up my tummy than I would a 250 calorie 2 inch by 3 inch meal replacement bar.
But, I have to say that I am currently at a VERY low bodyfat (could definitely compete in bikini right now, maybe not figure - about 11% body fat) and I have a MRP Shake every day after my workout and the *occasional* bar when I need to.
