Hi! I'm new here (always had an account but never used it). I decided to start because I am having some serious motivation issues and they are eating me alive (and making me eat everything in sight).
Eating disorders took me from a muscular 150 pounds at 16 to a fat 128 pounds in 4 months, and then I gained even more fat and went all the way up to 177 pounds at 17.
I exercised a bit and got down to 158 pounds by 18, and stayed there for a year. Then, I started working at a gym, and by the time I was 20 I was 149 pounds and 24% body fat, the fittest I'd ever been. My waist was 29 inches for the first time ever.
After travelling for 6 months and drinking massive amounts of beer (and not exercising) I gained 32 pounds and ended up where I am today (182 pounds, 32.5% BF.
My question is, how do you shake past screwups? Its so hard to be motivated when you seem incapable of success. I'm 23 now and I don't want to waste my youth being a tub of lard.

I don't know anyone that didn't waste a few years (or more) partying and having a good time when they were younger. Nothing to really get down on yourself about to be honest. Besides the past is in the past. You can either live there and beat yourself up over things that you can't change or you can move forward with your life. Time is going to pass either way so you better decide which it's going to be.

The question is how badly do you want it now? Who cares what happened before. You have the chance to look better than you ever even looked before if you dedicate yourself enough. Take the first step in organizing yourself a diet, and workout routine. Stick to it no matter what. You **** up one day? You jump right back into it right after you **** up. No more excuses. Results WILL happen if you take the necessary steps. Now its just time to kick yourself into gear. Are you ready? Because it will take hard work. It will take some time. But once you start tasting those results, no matter how minimal they are, you will be self driven to keep going. Just do it. Lets go, no more ****ing around.

Basically you learn from your past mistakes. A LOT LESS drinking and A LOT more exercise. I wouldn't say you should stop drinking beer entirely. You should enjoy a drink every once in a while but your going to be serious about your exercise at the same time.

Would you rather do nothing about it and let the regrets continue to pile up, or accept it as in the past and try to change?

I am the sum of the lessons learned from my failures.
My successes are pleasant memories, but have never changed me, nor defined me.
Mistakes do not doom you to failure, it's your mind - and only your mind - that determines what you will become.

It seems like you have taken the first step towards helping you keep motivated by posting on the forums here. Find other things that will help keep you motivated, photos of your past are always good. Keep progress pictures every month to look back on as you get fitter, find inspirational people, watch videos, use the mirror, sign up for a year at the gym and go with a friend any of these things help. You need to find what motivates you and keeps you going, YOU need to want it so bad you can feel it burning in your heart.

Forget the past and lets start over. You and I share similar stories. I pressed the restart button on 12/27/2011.
Some one told me "Remember you can quit anytime why quit now?"

a lot of good advice above me. but let me ask, what are you doing to correct your list of "screw ups"?
whether you think you can or can't, you're right. to answer your question directly, the best way to "shake past screw ups" would be to start a routine. RIGHT NOW. mmk, go.

You state you haven't been successful in the past...sounds like a crock since you wrote about past success in this posting....You know what has worked in the past...Use that as a guide to lose and restart your exercise routine....What do ya shake past screwups?....You change your mindset....look at these "screwups" as lessons learned....Refrain from repeating bad habits...Lastly. Forgive yourself....that quilt will manifest your situation.....You made mistakes...you've learned from them....forgive yourself.....move on....Self

I'm no expert but I'd like to help. I think you have to remember first that the body is something that changes shape and weight. Second, you are wrong in saying that you are not capable of success 'cause you already have succeeded. You just had a slip. you can get be fit again and stay there. Third, it takes discipline. You cannot be fit if you eat and drink away. You have to have control. Fourth, ask yourself every time you'd like to dig in if it's worth it.
I hope I helped and didn't make you feel worse. Godspeed!

Just draw a line under it and start again. Everyone 'messes up' every once in a while, but there's nothing you can do about it now so what's the point in worrying about it?
