View Full Version : Anyone want to do a 3 lift total race?

minigun450

Thought occurred to me as I was cooking some eggs. We could have a race for the 3 main lifts (bench, squat, deadlift), if we do this, we could set it up as taking everyone's total right now, then set a goal that is 150lbs or whatever above everyone's total. Everyone has their own goal to achieve so its fair in that aspect. Winner ccan get reps from everyone participating.

Not that it would matter, but differences in current levels will make 150 much different for some people. There is currently a 1RM thread that is aimed at being a motivational thread.

This.

A complete noobie adding 150 to his total would be easy. Adding 150lbs to an already 1600lb total for a seasoned lifter would take some serious time.

You could break it up into groups based on 1 rm totals

600, 800, 1000, 1200, etc

This, but also keep in mind the difference between bulkers and cutters will be huge as well.

Then divide it more, I thought about weight classes, and doing a winner in each class.

This^ and also some people dont deadlift or squat. So 1000 lb bench press will be hard to get to...

We could jsut do a single lift race then, or not.

Another way of doing it is...

Everyone who wants to enter reports their starting stats and ending stats. Then we all vote on who the winner is. Everyone can take into account lifting experience etc. That way everyone can compete with everyone else fairly.

Game on!

How are you taking control of your life? You say you've overcome binge eating and can now squat way more than you used to. How is that really taking control of your life? I can see overcoming the ED an accomplishment, but there are more important things than lifting heavy. How's your relationships with loved ones? You sound like the type that alienates everyone else because you think your "goals" are more important than anything else. With an attitude like this, I'd be surprised if you haven't already begun to piss off the people close to you

I do legs once in a while, whenever I have a girl working out with me. The LISS w/ max incline usually is good enough for me. I do fashion modeling (magazine stills, no runway stuff) and I have to fit into slim fit jeans, chinos, slacks, etc. So I need to tailor my workout to my needs. Also, Im only 5'7.5 thats why im limited to magazine fashion stuff. If I got thicker legs it would make me look shorter and I couldnt fit into the proper clothing...

So cmon guys...why hate? :)

Honestly, he could be 225lbs+ and it wouldn't make it any better. Its not about his stats, it about how fuking arrogant he comes across. A lot of people on this boards have accomplished great things, but most of them don't take this "I'm better than everyone else" attitude.

Just don't think you should question people if they lift when you neglect everything from the waist down
He has different goals than others on these boards. He said he trains for modeling, and big/strong legs aren't desirable for him. If someone was training to become as strong as possible, you wouldn't call him out for being above 15%bf. Simply not what they're training for. Different goals, therefore different journeys for everyone. Just as long as they aren't a dik about it, I think it should be respected.

There is a difference between people not respecting your lifts and people not respecting your attitude. TBH, I don't care what you lift if you can't back that up with the proper attitude. There will always be a guy who is bigger, stronger, and better; it is great to have accomplished things and to continue to strive for more, but I certainly think there is a way to approach it. Constantly telling people how great you are is not the way.

You're maxing out soon right? Whatever those lifts are, put them in your sig. That's what I do when I feel particularly proud of my lifts at any given time. You can even put @ your bodyweight or whatever since otherwise those lifts aren't particularly awe-inspiring (real talk). Have the thoughts of a champion, but the humility of a loser. When you start thinking your something is when you cease to strive to be anything.

People will try to discredit what you've done or doubt you. Let them, do you and let your actions speak.

You have nothing with which to disprove him at this time. If and when you do, then you can just post the vid and be done with it. Until then, it's just a bunch of ego fueled nonsense.

The longer I remained injured the more I think that unless you're a powerlifter - doing 1RM frequently (more than maybe twice a year) is silly.

If you strengthen your weak spots and can maintain proper technique during a 1RM, I don't see the problem with doing heavy 1RM work often.

I'm talking about going for a big PR. Ya know the ones that make you say "wow I hope I get it up.." <-- in those situations I feel that you're more likely to contract an injury. Rep PRs are safer than 1RM PRs, IMO.

Slightly disagree. I find that I strain weak points doing reps more than an all our 1RM where I only need to focus on form once.

I see your point but there is a fine line. When doing rep PRs, at least you can stop if you're feeling too fatigued. A 1RM that you honestly don't know if you can get up is.. well all or nothing.

I think it is dependent on the rep range. I find 3RM or 5RM to be more stressful than 1RMs, but 8RM seems like childsplay in comparison.

True. Although I giggle a little when I hear people talk about their 8RM unless it's "I just spent the last twenty minutes turning my 8RM into a 20 rep squat." nomsayin?

TBH, I rarely like to work at 8 reps unless it is an accessory movement. After that point, the fatigue feels like it is more endurance based than actual muscle based(at least for me) if that makes sense.

Anyways - Manny, start posting/lurking in the PL forum more. That usually does a good job keeping me humble. Reading a lot of those guy's logs makes me feel like I don't even lift.
I remember seeing he posted a video asking for critiques on his form...someone said his squat was **** (his heels were coming up, and his form could have used some work)...he then proceeded to say no one know wtf they were talking about and blah blah blah I'm going to do this and that.

Other than the fact I dont want big legs for occupation reasons. Ive also had reconstructive knee surgery on both knees (ACL reconstruction and torn meniscusin both). This is also why I dont play sports anymore. Just scared.

I know man, if I could I would! I'm working on it. I had the highest total in my class and the 4th highest total at the meet. Seeing as how Beau Moore and Layne Norton were there, not too shabby. It was a local meet though so there wasn't a whole lot of competition going on. I'm cutting for aesthetics right now, no thongs or tanner in 2012.

Yep. I want 1300 in January, 1350 in March, and 1400 in May.

Of what? In gym max or my competition? I floor pressed 265 today so I'm sure I could pause bench it. I want that 275 though dammit.

I'm not going to bloat for this meet either since it's happening about halfway through my cut. We'll see how different my performance is now that I'm not rocking a 8,000 calorie pre-bed meal and a 5,000 calorie breakfast.

I've tweaked my form a lot since then and have made some improvements with my leg drive. I know what my sticking point is and that's lockout. I will do paused bench on my next ME day and video it, maybe you or somebody will see something that I don't.

I remember in "So You Think You Can Bench?" Tate was dawging (I'm trying to sound hip here) on the guy because his elbows passed the bench, so more arch.

If you have thoracic mobility issues (I don't know if you do), this vid would help. It helped me a ton:

I still haven't moved to adding a foam roller or PVC pipe under my back on the bench.

This is my biggest problem. I do thoracic extensions every day and even though it's gotten a lot better I still don't think I have a good arch.

You are missing out on quite a bit of tightness in that vid too alongside the leg drive. It doesn't appear that you are pulling your traps in hard and binding up your back on the descent, most notably by the fact that you lifted yourself up and then threw yourself into the bench immediately before the lift off. Try this - lay the bench then put your feet on the bench and thrust your hips up off the bench. Pull your traps back as tigth as possible as if you were doing a shrug. That is how tight you should be and how you should be set for the bench. It's akin to wearing unlaced tennis shoes on a squat - you end up fighting your base more than pushing the bar.

All this is making me realize that i need to vid my bench and see how far I'm off lol.

Damn. Having to be flat-footed I would definitely consider trying with legs extended. Dave Tate used to do it that way for a while. Just feels much more rigid when having to be flat-footed.
