View Full Version : Anyone else disapointed with mediocrity of MMORPG's recently?

I like to consider myself a casual MMORPG player (I play around an hour a day usually) but it seems to me that a lot of these new MMORPG's that are coming out try to copy WoW and end up being **** because there are hundred's of WoW clones out there. Even WoW is getting to be **** as well... everyone just afk's in a capital city until they get put into a dungeon/instance. It's hard to explain my disappointment so maybe you guys share a similar feeling in regards to MMORPG's and would like to explain why they are getting to be **** now. I'm just sick of this Kill 10 ____ bull**** that these MMO's have now.

Honestly, I'm just waiting for Guild Wars 2 to come out (their new dynamic event system sounds really fun and the first Guild Wars was also pretty fun as well) and if that game turns out to be **** then it's hard to imagine another game will be as good as the original MMO's that a lot of us played when we were a lot younger (Runescape, WoW, EQ)

Yes. You're absolutely right, they try to clone WoW in many regards and utterly fail, for the sheer fact that everyone has played WoW and will hold other games to it's standard, naturally. The problem is that WoW has been so polished over the years that the combat can be very entertaining (pvp, pve sucks and is boring).

So Guild Wars, Aion, Rift, Star Wars, DC, all come out with the same concept but nothing new that makes you actually want to submerge yourself.

So what made WoW great? I believe a lot had to do with the character customization, professions, and progress. You could log in and always have something on your mind to improve...

but that's part of the addiction they try to put onto you. I sincerely suggest you read this if you haven't already.

OP needs to actually try some games because there are plenty that do not copy WoW. Quite few things they do now is take from other MMO's.

Also smh @ you placing it in the same class as the "orginal" MMO's.

I played final fantasy XI for a long time and it definitely was my favorite mmo. Their was minimal questing, long grinds, basically it was very different from wow.on paper it looked retarded and grindy but ive never had more fun in an mmo. The community was very closeknit and people were actually well known on a server. I was hoping FFXIV would improve on it but that game ended up being complete ass.

Also smh @ you placing it in the same class as the "orginal" MMO's.Seriously. How on earth did you feel that runescape and WoW belong with the glory of EverQuest?

Because that only applies to WoW, and not the rest of the games you just listed, right? Derp.

EVERY MMO copies off another MMO in one way or another.

I don't understand this dumb sh*t about "they copied game X" when it comes to any MMO or RPG when EVERY MMO or RPG is pretty much based off Dungeons and Dragons...

i played a small mmo for 4 odd years during my teenage years.

-you dropped items on death
-could kill anyone other than in a tiny amount of safe zones
-there were unique mobs (none of this instance ****) so people would compete for the same mobs
- ~4k players, you would recognise people regularly

it was just a lot more fun, fed up with all these games designed for retards to play

played wow for 6 months, loved it but felt as if i had seen everything worth seeing. that was 4 years ago and havent been back since

WoW revolutionized the MMO genre, so of course if a company wants to make it big it has to follow the WoW model. Anything outside the WoW model is catered to the hardcore and small niche gamer, there is profit to be made that way but it's a lot tougher road to take.

yeah recent mmos have been somewhat stale and similar to the wow model. i wanted to write a big post about guild wars 2 but it wouldve derived the discussion from the topic so i made another thread check it out
