View Full Version : Went the range this evening, I am disgust (Need gun advice)

It was a typical sunday day. I was at the gym doing calves and abs ( I do them on a seperate day because doing them after major muscle group diverts blood from the trained muscle and I need to look stacked when I leave and walk past the desk girls) Thats irrelevant. So I lifted and went home and proceeded to to work on my project truck and its now fully assembled, but the things not starting. That coupled with dealing with my dad who has a bug up his ass is making me angry so I decide to treat myself and go shoot a bit. I grab my glock and Ar and go the to the range. This is a new location and its not a bad gig, but its always busy so its kind of annoying. I wait for 5 minutes at the register before dude finally comes over and is like sup. Im like I wanna use the range. He proceeds to tell me he doesnt know how to run a card so he calls over some woman to do it, mind you in the 2 times I have been here I have dealt with said kid 3 times and he hasnt been able to assist me once yet. I know that feel bro, so I refrain from shooting his ass for incompetence there and then. Woman runs my card and checks my FOID and thats all squared away. Go to the back area and show dude range warden my receipt and he enlightens me on the fact they close in a half hour, whoops thought they closed at 7. Dude says next time I can shoot for half price so I agree and get my lane.
Heres where fecal matter gets authenticated. My AR has >1000 rounds through it. In case you didnt know its a BCM 16 inch carbine upper w/ BCM BCG, misc lower, dpms lower parts, and magpul stock/grip. So I load up two mags and I load that puppy up. Im squeezing off rounds and its been about 30, *click.* Mind you im also hungry and the blood sugar is bit low so im kinda just buzzing. I drop the mag and behold theres a round left. Guess it was only 28 rounds. Rack handle and clear the chamber. FTF. I examine the round and the primer strike isnt light. Run another mag and experience 2 more FTF. Sigh. Pull out the glock and it runs peachy as always whats new.
So the last two times I have shot my AR I have had........ 6-8 or so FTF's out of...... maybe 250 rounds, none of the strikes look to be light. This has been with federal x193 or w/e and American eagle .223. I had a dude who is a big gun guy look my gun over and he agreed the strikes arent light and he didnt think my hammer is weak either. So whats the deal here.......Is AR ammo really that unreliable that I am getting that many bad rounds? Im very sure it is not my gun that is having issues. I wont even go into the fact that I dont like the feel of the gun much either......

intradesting, i run fed xm193 thru my stag and have yet to have a single malfunction. if its in the brown boxes i doubt its the ammo if its FTF. email BCM+try diff ammo thru it
(protip-29 rounds in a mag is always better than 30)
in b4 hola/lawler/other phaggots show up and says your AR is fine they all jam nonstop XD

It could be a bad lot of M193, if thats not it it has to be light primer strikes... the .mil primers are harder then commercial ones so....

Well if its not a light strike issue then there really aren't any other ways it would be related to the AR. How do you store the ammo and how old is it? Try running some rounds through another AR if you can to rule out your firearm as the problem. Sounds like a bad lot of ammo to me honestly

Sorry if I was not clear, ive now had ftfs with both federal and american eagle. I store my ammo in a box in my closet.
I am going to take your advice and insomniac and email bravo company. Im thinking of maybe taking an even trade on an m1a tbh. I dont know that I am a fan of this platform really.....

So I'm at the range with the Yugo. I load up a fresh mag of surplus Hungarian ammo. Everything runs perfect.
I get bored and decide I need a challenge. After the tenth mag of 30 year old Chinese corrosive ammo, I get bored with trying to make the Kalashnikov fail. I haven't cleaned it in over 2000 rounds, and it is determined to run smoother.
I give a nod to the fat guy with the $1200 LMT with the ACOG on the way out. He continues trying to decide between 193 and 855. With my $500 dollar Yugo under my arm, I climb into my '99 Jeep and powerslide out of the icy parking lot while giving a salute to the warriors in their F350s with mud tires trying to hook up out of the frozen hill.

What was the last time you gave it a complete cleaning?
The last time I cleaned it. Everything was cleaned, lubed, and fondled to military specs. Email has been sent to BCM. I save a shell from every caliber I shoot for the first time and my AR shells seem a tad lighter than the rest, especially the AKs which looks like the firing pin almost came out the other side

My friend has a yugo underfolder. Aside from the fact the stock hurts like fuk and the mags it came with cause feeding issues its a neat gun. But I cant go and buy the same gun as him, especially since hes a iranian immigrant so we are unofficially at war. I will not bow to his russian designed commi stick

I would point fingers at the lower before the upper. Trigger group could be installed wrong, or a bad spring.
Right from BCM.
1. FAILURE TO FIRE: The most probable reason for this is bad ammunition. Wait 30 seconds with the weapon pointed in a safe direction, remove the magazine, then pull the charging handle to eject the round, and examine the primer. If it has a good, deep primer strike, the ammunition is probably no good. If it has a light primer hit, it may be a hard primer, or the hammer spring may be defective or installed incorrectly, or there may be debris between the hammer and the forward wall of the lower receiver. A quick look in the lower will tell you. If it doesn't have any mark at all, the firing pin isn't reaching the round. The firing pin retaining pin may have been installed incorrectly (in front of the collar instead of behind it), the firing pin may be defective (short), or the hammer is not hitting the firing pin for some reason (not falling, hitting bolt carrier instead, debris in front, etc.). If, when trying to eject the unfired round, the charging handle is difficult to operate, the bolt may not have been locked fully forward due to an oversized round, or debris in the chamber. Riding the charging handle forward may also cause this problem. Remember, pull it back, and let go. NOTE: All AR-15 type rifles dimple the primer during feeding. This is completely normal for this type of weapon

I'm sorry, but I'm military. I dont sugar coat what assault weapons are used for. You want to talk about comp guns like a Tanfoglio Gold I'll talk about targets, you wanna talk about AK's and AR's, I'll talk about which one you could kill the most people with accurately and rapidly with smoother mag swaps and less exposure and which round will tear through cover better.
Thats what Assault Weapons are for. You may one day find yourself assaulting something, wondering, why the hell your ammo and weapon have a combined weight of six pounds over the opposition, makes a big difference when the burned out 1976 Fiat your hiding behind starts getting ripped through like tissue paper by a superior force.
assault weapons, love em.
turbo-i'll take your broken BCM upper off your hands at a discounted price since im gonna have to get it fixed. =P

Glad u got it fixed. Now u know which way the spring goes.....
As for the ammo, I was ready to blame the American eagle. If its the same **** I'm thinking of its known junk. Black box, there was a really good deal on it a while ago. i think someone on here posted it and was sold out in a couple hours.
Anyway now that its assembled correctly, what's your beef with it?

Jake's on you. I'm about to buy a Dragunov; will be sniper. Planning on running some 7.62x51mm through it to achieve a better flight path.

Let us know how it shoots after that hammer spring swap. I shoot all the cheapest ammo I can find out of the Stag and never had a FTF so I'm always skeptical when I hear ammo getting blamed.

The beautiful thing about living in illinois is that the outdoor range that has the 50 and 100 yard lanes is closed. Do I dare zero my rifle to the 64 ft distance on the indoor range and just cycle rounds through that son bich? Ill probably go again in two weeks or so and be pleasantly surprised by how much more reliable my over priced gun is and let you guys no since nothing else is going on in this section.

Have to be very careful with the trigger group, I've seen that done as well as parts not machined correctly from several companies causing multiple round discharges because of the disconnector not locking back the hammer. That was fun! Colt parts went in that baby when I got back home! Don't sweat it man, you learn these things and now you just got to learn the guts of your weapon better! Gotta love working on the AR though, such a neat weapon.

I had a lower that went into burst fire mode before, I thought it had some thing to do with soft primer reloads but that wasn't the case. Nothing like getting Bert stared by 5 people at the range... I fixed it on the spot with some spare parts before I got raped.

Just picked up an M4 a few weeks ago but my dad keeps telling me they are illegal in CT so I can't bring it home from where I bought it. Been meaning to call the state police to fully verify. It's pissing me off leaving it somewhere else. That said, I still think I prefer the M1A over the AR platform for general fun to shoot. Also have a Nagant and a Garand as well. AR is a fun gun to shoot though.

If it has a 14.5" barrel it is illegal. It has to be registered as a SBR. 16" is the min. length.
