View Full Version : Cool Story Bro time. Found a new avenue of attack to get round plates at my gym.

I tried going through management myself and requesting a set of round plates or bumper plates. Nothing moved on it. I've noticed though, we have several very large trainers at my gym and they've gotten some freedom with getting equipment in to the gym. Anyway, one of the dudes saw me doing deads and came over to give me some technique advice (yes, posterior chain flexability, I sit back with my hips low just to beable to keep my back straight) So, I just happen to mention, "man, it sucks to deadlift with these fukin' 12 sided plates, be nice to have some round plates or bumpers in here". I also asked for tips since I've seen him coach a bunch of the high school atheletes on deads using hex plates. Then mentioned again how nice round plates would be. The trainers are on it trying to bring in at least some round plates.

you should buy your own and bring them into the gym in like a wheel barrow and just bertstare anyone who looks at you

I got the bert stare when I brought my own 2.5s because there are only 2 in the entire gym and I hate hunting the fukers down. Love telling people that no, they can't use those plates, they're mine!", the lol and let them borrow them if I'm not using them.

I would think they could sell off the old hex plates to another gym, ebay, something, and only have to put up a small cost to replace the entire set. Would be a small yet highly beneficial investment to replace those nasty things.

I used to bring my own 2.5 and 5 lb machine stack addon weights and use at the gym. People would always ask about them. Especially on machines that only incremented by 10.

Do hex plates have a purpose?

I'm glad my gym is so powerlifter friendly.

Don't gyms use them to discourage deadlifting (and therefore less liability if someone gets injured)?

I honestly have no idea, the reasoning has got to be along those lines though. Unless some douche just thought he could improve the wheel and was (I hope) appropriately IRL negged by everyone who knew him.

Hex plates piss me the fuk off. SDSU (who is known to have one of the 'best' gyms at a college campus in the US) has hex plates. wtf is dat shet.

That's one of the reasons why I went back to LA fitness.

huh? wasn't aware that our gym was that great. Too many bros here, but can't argue with the price. Sure hexplates are a pain in the ass loading and moving after your set of deadlifts, but i don't see anything other than that that makes them so bad.

Hate hex plates. 24Hr has them as well.

BUT, No one deads at my gym except for this BEAST (easy on the eyes too...) who last time I saw he was DLing 4+ (may have been 5) pps for reps like it was nothing.

Not likely going to get rounds, We dont even have enough barbells. Srs. missing one for a couple months. No fun walking around to see if all of the bench BB are being used and then having to wait for one to be free.....

I bring my own plates to the gym, srs.

(only 0.5 kg plates, though; +1 kg every week for rows, bench, and overhead press = win)
