I bought a 1TB portable Seagate about, I dunno, 8 months ago, and I swear it was way cheaper then. WTF happened to the prices on those things? I thought technology was supposed to get cheaper over time?

Because of the flooding in Thailand, prices will still be high all throughout 2012 so they can rebuild their factories

Supply and demand brah, macroeconomics 101

forgot what its called, but theres some kind of "rule" that says;

technology gets either:
half the price,
twice as good,
or half the size

every 18 months

that rule is now invalid

That's Moore's law...prices are getting cheaper, based on production. You still have to consider inflation and other economic factors...

Internal HDDs as well. I bought a 1TB drive for $60 a few months ago. This same HDD is now $100+ on Newegg.

flooding in thailand has severely hampered supply for seagate, and western digital. most hard drives were made there.

I'm surprised nobody has brought this up, but I think it's the flooding in Thailand. That's where alot of hard drives are made.

I bought a 1TB portable Seagate about, I dunno, 8 months ago, and I swear it was way cheaper then. WTF happened to the prices on those things? I thought technology was supposed to get cheaper over time? there was some sort of natural disaster in a country that supplies a pretty big chunk of hard drives.

I'm using it for an old laptop and now it's an external hard drive enclosure. With the prices of hard drives right now and with no idea when the prices are back to normal I think it's a good deal. 6 months ago I would have said the same thing as you so you're mad for no reason.

everyone is using the flooding in thailand to jack up prices. right after it happened, even places that had enough inventory from before the flooding jacked up their prices to try and make any sort of extra revenue and to fool the costumers. fukk them. i hope they go out of business.

apparently prices will start dropping again in december.

It'll take the entire year of 2012 to re-build the factories...prices won't go down until 2013, probably...

just one source. there are a couple more. 2013 is just crazy and not true. some factories are already back up and running.

Several channel retailers are already preparing to dump their hard drive inventory, which was piled up due to concerns over potential shortages, in December as the imbalance between supply and demand is not as serious as originally expected and the retailers are trying to shed some stock to avoid from being hurt as hard drive capacity will be gradually restored in January and February 2012, according to sources from channel retailers.

Since Japan-based hard drive motor supplier Nidec already announced that one of its plants in Thailand has resumed production, while many other hard drive component suppliers are also aggressively seeking solutions to substitute their lost capacity in Thailand, the sources believe the hard drive shortage issues will see an obvious improvement in January 2012.

Since the hard drive shortages may not be as serious as expected, while demand in the PC market remains weak as pricing has surpassed consumers' sweet spot, several retailers are already set to drop their hard drive prices and dump inventories into retail channel in December.

You clearly don't know anything about computers if you think a 1 TB SSD will cost the same as a 2 TB standard HDD. SSD's are substantially more expensive than traditional HDD's.
