What are you doing with a pair of 5kg dumbbells that's causing cartilage damage?

This seques into my next question... What exercises do you intend to do with dumbbells? 10kg might be a perfect weight for some movements, but will be either too heavy or too light for others.

Which of these are causing cartilage damage?

In answer to your original question, I think you'll want dumbbells heavier than 10kg for many of those movements. It may take some time, but I think it's likely that you'll eventually be able to press 30kg in each hand - i.e. 60kg total. (You may be able to press even more, but I think that 30kg is a reasonable short- to medium-term goal.)

That's not to say that you should get a pair of 30kg dumbbells right away. If you can afford it, get some 10s, 15s, and 20s to start. If they're too expensive, consider getting some adjustable dumbbells.

Don't forget to work your legs.
