Put it together the other day and it runs BF3 on ultra settings with a sick frame rate.

Lookin good. Thick, solid, tight, etc. You should think about buying another 6950 in the future and crossfiring them. When x2 6950's are crossfired they are beast mode. They rape the Nvida 580 and 5970.
Maybe chuck in a 3D monitor as well for the 120hz refresh rate.

I went with 16gb of RAM as well just for increasing my e-peen. Don't think I'll be utilizing all of it anytime soon, but it was cheap as phuck so I chucked it in there. Also, Tigerdirect was having a special promotion with no interest financing so I went ahead and did that. Get to pay it off over 12 months.

I'm actually thinking about buying another 6950 this week to crossfire them. It runs BF3 flawlessly, but having that extra video card would make my PC so beast.
Monitor?
Using a 23" 1080p Acer monitor. Got it for $170.

honestly for the money you could've done much better.
i7 was a waste of money. even an Athlon X4 performs the same as your i7 in BF3. also the hyperthreading has shown to create stuttering in BF3 so you should disable it in the BIOS

should've put more money into graphics. I suggest you go Crossfire to take advantage of you CPU
16GB of RAM is unnecessary for gaming and 4 DIMMs are harder to overclock than 2 DIMMs
the V100 is a terrible SSD. should've gotten a Crucial M4, something Sandforce based or the Kingston V100+

CPU isnt as important as GPU according to benchmarks. Older quad cores keep up with i7's surprisingly. GPU is where the money should be invested. My rig is pretty simliar to yours OP but I'm not running ultra due to the framerates being not a constant 40+ fps.

my phenom ii 840 3.2ghz quad (really an athlon) cost 100 dollars brand new. At stock settings with my 560ti at stock i can max anything game at playable rates. The performance gains for the cpu listed would come largely down to the game and in many cases would play little significance in real world terms. In that regard you should stick with intel more specifically the i5 2500k as this thing can be OC'd to hell and back. It will be a few years before it will be absolutely necessary to upgrade because lettuce be reality, games won't require such cpu power until the release of new consoles at least, given the trend that less and less developers are making pc oriented titles, therefore in way hamstringing the true capabilities of a pc. If your doing editing though you might need all that hyperthreading i doubt it though.

You are getting above 50 frames with 1 6950?
Edit: WTF dude for the price you could have made a beast setup. The you only needed around a 500w for that rig since the mb doesn't support crossfire and you are only running one mid range card.

yeah i only went with the 16gb cuz it was $90. i figured it might be good for CAD, CS5, Revit, etc. i'm not a big gamer so i ended up just getting a cheap gtx460. i need to save up to get a bigger/1080p monitor tho. my current one is old as fuark but i'm a cheapskate...

Agreed that the setup is a bit overpriced; OP didn't utilize his money well and could've gotten a better bang for his money since he's gaming.
BUT please tell me you didn't call the 6950 a MID RANGE CARD :/

People hate on the Sandforce, but I have a Corsair Force GT 120GB and I love it. So ****ing fast and I haven't even had to update the firmware to 1.3.3 from 1.3

Why not wait till the 79xx series comes out? The 6950 handles BF3 on ultra quite well, no need in throwing a second one in there.

Nothing official I believe. It's expected to be released in late 2011 or Q1 2012. For the higher end cards, it will more than likely be Q1 2012. If you need a card now, then you should get one of the current gen cards. If you waited for the next big thing then you'll be waiting forever.

I thought the 6950 was comparable to the 560ti which is also a mid range card compared to the 580, etc.

The i7 2600k was more of a long term investment. I know BF3 didn't need all that, but for overall performance, it rapes.
I went ahead and flashed my 6950's BIOS to make it a 6970 in terms of performance. It has the same shaders, GPU clock, and memory clock now. Still, I'll definitely be adding another card in there in the near future.
I will never utilize 16GB of RAM currently, but RAM is extremely cheap so I chucked it in there for ****s and giggles.
I didn't really research too many SSD's so I kind of just picked a 128GB SSD and threw it in my shopping cart haha. It runs fairly decent, but I could've done better in that department.

My mobo supports Crossfirex so I'll be buying another card in the near future.
