Yeah it's bullsh!t, I had to call them the other day to do it. For what it's worth, I spent like 3 minutes on the phone and it was easy.

I bought the prepaid $50 membership. Don't remember putting in any credit card info. Could be wrong though. Aware me.

Use prepaid cards, usually cheaper and don't have to worry about automatic renewal

I will tell you guys this as well..

Do not pay with a credit card, always buy the prepaid XBLive cards and enter in the code.

My story:

Bought XBLive with credit card
1 Year later it expired, but i didnt bother cancelling because the credit card wasnt any good anymore so the charge would just fail. My account got turned off as expected.
A few weeks later i decided I was going to resubscribe, so i ordered a 12+1 month card off Newegg for 40 bucks. I wasnt in a huge rush to get it turned on, so i figured i'd save the 10 bucks buying it on newegg and get an extra month as well.
Go to enter in code, and it says the code is invalid for my account(or something like that). I try a few times and get the same problem.
Call MS Support and they tell me that because i ordered via Credit card and the renewal charge was denied, that the only way to reactivate my account on their side was to use a credit card.
I argue with him for 5 minutes, but he wont do anything about it.
So here i am holding a 40 dollar card that is 100% worthless to me, and ended up spending another 50 bucks to reactivate with my credit card.

Stupidest crap ever, thankfully i had a buddy who needed the card so i just sold it for 30 bucks to be rid of it.

most companies do this now they'll do anything to get a couple of extra bucks off of you

I'm not surprised. We're talking about a company that deliberately hides the details of it's patent licensing deals in order to prevent the open source community from actually removing the infringing code.

Like the guy above me said. Always use the prepaid cards for any online service.

I had the same problem...I just ended up calling the credit card company and reported my card missing/stolen. It was fast and easy doing it that way, didn't even get put on hold
