Just received my Bachelors in September and today a job offer from a major player in the construction industry. Not only did I get a job offer, but they also are giving me options for where I can go. So where should I go?
Hawaii?
Alaska?
Western Canada/Alberta?
Seattle?
Portland/Vancouver, WA?
L.A.?
San Diego?

I also need to tell my wife, but I want to surprise her, since she was more excited about the possibilities than I was. I have to pick her up from work at 11:30 (in 7 hours) and I want to do something cool. When I originally told her that they were flying me out for an interview, I pulled a little prank on her. I'd like to stick to that theme.

Help me out NutMisc!

In order of my personal preference:

Hawaii
L.A.
San Diego
Seattle
Portland/Vancouver, WA
Alaska
Western Canada/Alberta

Depends.

What kind of weather do you prefer? Do you care much about the cost of living?

I'd personally pick Hawaii but it has the highest cost of living out of all your options.

My salary comes with a cost of living multiplier. So say I choose Hawaii, it has a multiplier of .5, so my salary would increase by 50%. They based my salary off of where I live now and will then add the multiplier once I decide where I go.

I also forgot to mention that my wife's family lives in Seattle and she misses them a ton.

Weather... anything is better than winter in Utah.

I'd go with California or Hawaii. Both have pretty decent weather year round. Hawaii would be the best. I'm mad jelly, son.

It REALLY depends on what you're looking for. Considering you're married, I'd choose:

1) Seattle/San Diego (tie)
2) Portland (but not Vancouver, even though they're close)
3) LA/Hawaii (tie)

I wouldn't even consider:

Alaska
Western Canada/Alberta

Keep in mind that even though employers try to compensate for increased costs of living, it's never really enough to even out. For example, you would earn more in San Francisco than you would in Kansas City, but you'll still have less discretionary income in the former. FWIW, I've lived in Seattle and LA and been to Portland and San Diego. I put LA last because even though, personally, I would move back in a heartbeat, it's expensive and I would be wary of raising a family there (if that's what you have in mind).

Seattle you selfish son of a bish! (notsrs). Congrats. I say let the wife pick if you don't have a preference. Happy wife = happy you. If she don't care, my first pick would be Hawaii.

Don't knock UT winters - some of us choose to live here lol.

I got my Bach 9 years ago... can I have that job? LOL

My first choice would be san diego... LA too pretentious, Hawaii I think I'd go stir crazy... San Diego has a good mix... The rest are too cold/rainy!

All personal considerations aside, Hawaii seems like an amazing place. Whatever works best for you and the wife, though. And congratulations!

personally, i'd pick seattle or san diego. out of all of the cities in the usa that i've spent time in, i feel the most comfortable in those two.

alberta is beautiful, i'd seriously consider going out there too. tons of natural beauty but if you're into cosmopolitan lifestyle, it aint for ya

I'm a snowboarder and love the snow, but hate working in it. I'll definitely miss Utah though.

isn't hawaii a depressing poverty-stricken place aside from the tourist areas?

San Diego. The most perfect weather of any city I have ever been. ~70 and sunny just about every day. Tons of golf (if you're into that) and not as crowded or crime-stricken as LA.

There are obvious pros and cons to every location. My wife and I are leaning towards Hawaii right now, but the only thing that concerns me about that is my dog. Hawaii has some strict policies about dogs from other states and it would be quite the process to get her over there. And the last thing I want to do is leave my dog. Do you blame me?

I'm sure I could leave her with my in-laws in Seattle while I got all the paperwork in order for her to come over. It's just hard because she has been my best friend since my wife started working nights. It's nice to come home to someone that looks at you with such a stupid face.

I still say San Diego. Hawaii is like another country (srs). Lots of things you are used to in the lower 48 don't exist in Hawaii.

OP, maybe you should take a trip out to Hawaii if you're seriously considering moving there. And I'm not talking about a vacation. Scope out places you would actually live, spend time, etc; none of that tourist crap.
