View Full Version : I have $478 left to spend on my gym

After all is said and done, I have $478 left to spend on my gym (I set aside a limit and somehow I haven't capped out on it yet). I can sift a little more $$$ into my gym, but I am putting a cap on this health-based obsession.

So! I need to know what I should get.

I already have a squatting rack, bench, all the bars I need, all the olympic weights I need, high-low pulley, all the dumbbell weight I need, a leg extension/curl attachment, and most of those basic little things. Tomorrow I'm buying my u90 stage 2 kit, three 6'x4' half inch rubber mats, and an ez curl bar (those items together will be about $620 after taxes), but that leaves me with $478 left still (or possibly $90 more if I decide to only go with two mats, as I may only need two just for my power cage area).

I'm looking for something medium-ish or big-ish that I should get.

Craigslist simply isn't an option. If I see something irresistibly good, I'll jump on it... this $478 isn't breaking the bank; it's just my stopping line.

So to the point: What would you recommend as a new purchase around the $478 area. I'm considering a powertec squat/calf machine since I can't fit a leg press/hack squat machine in my workout area, but I really don't know if it'd even be worth the $$$. This isn't a thread about how to save money -- what would you buy if you were being impulsive but had to pick one last thing based on what I have :)

If no good ideas come up, my voice of reason will kick in and say enough is enough for now... but I'd love a good recommendation :D

I don't really have a recommendation, but i'm looking forward to pics of the new gym! That is all.

:) I'll be happy to post pics when it's all done. I did post some part-way pics, but that was part-way.

It looks silly at the moment since it is in my bedroom, and I have to do repainting, rearranging, and partial reflooring. Being on carpet and with a bed frame taking up about 1/6 of the room, it's kind-of a mess. Though it works right now, and it'll only get better with better space management.

My project includes tossing down two or three mats and *hoping* the carpet pats down hard enough to keep the rubber mats pretty well solid (since I don't want to rip up any carpet). These will be proper gym mats (half an inch thick, heavy). I also am removing my bedframe from the room and doing one of two things: either insetting my bed into where my closet is, or setting up a home-made murphy bed type setup for my bed.

Once all that stuff is done, my whole setup will look proper and I'll have enough room. It'll still be a bedroom, but it will function well for all intents and purposes (gym & bedroom-wise).

Still have to figure out this last bit of $$$ and what to get. I'm thinking more and more than I might just want to keep the money, but that voice that speaks from my strong sense of spontaneity is saying go for it and spend it all! :)

A GHR sounds good to me also. (Wish I had space for one.)

Or, you could just hold off and train for a while with what you have. A month or two from now, you may have a clearer picture of what you want or need. Or some really great CL deal may come up in your area and you'd then have the funds for it...

what about http://powertecstore.com/images/Product/large/25.jpg
powertec compact leg sled?

GHR. But at that price point, I'd try to find one on CL or an imported Chinese/Force Fitness one like this: http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/486486975/G0201B_Deluxe_Glute_Ham_Raise.html Those were offered in Canada a while ago within your budget:

Most other new GHRs seem overpriced to me.

Dip stations are nice. Really hits the upper body.

So far the recommendations have been;

GHR
Self-spotter device
Leg sled

I'm somewhat interested in the compact leg sled, but I'm left wondering about the build quality of this (based on the rollers on it) as compared to some of the other Powertec equipment.

I don't think I want to buy a GHR, and if I do, I'd want one with a small footprint. I saw one at Costco for just $90 which looks to get the job done, and I just don't think I'll be incorporating it into my workouts (I've never used one).

I don't need a self-spotter since I have the power cage.

So I'm still left thinking on this.

That particular leg sled has been discussed here in the past. The weight capacity is only 700lbs. The sled looks like it sits at a 30 degree angle. That means that you only have a maximum of about 350 lbs of resistance when using the sled. (Recall that sin(30) = 1/2.)

A couple of other ideas:

Landmine

Farmer's Walk Handles (but only if your biggest dumbbells aren't heavy enough)

Neither of these are that expensive; even if you purchased both, you'd still have a CL deal fund.

Hmmm true enough. I actually do plan to make my own landmine with some PVC pipe and a little ingenuity. Shouldn't be too difficult -- piping is like lego. I was a plumber for about a year when I didn't know what I wanted to do with my life after graduation.

I'm seriously considering the LeverGym multi press by Powertec, and I would get the curl attachment with it... but I'm thinking again that might be dumb.

What will it allow you to do that you cannot currently do with your current set of equipment?

Machine curls :P

Idk... just thinking up a fun last thing to add. The more I think about it, the more I think I should hold on to the $$$.

How dare you say that, money allocated for the gym WILL be spent for the gym. :)

This is a truism. If you don't spend this year's money, you won't get it back next year. Bad budgeting axiom that never seems to be let go.

You can still spend those $$$, but maybe not right now. I notice, for example, that you've been finding some interesting Craigslist stuff. Some of that stuff you could buy low, clean it up, try it out, and, if it's not a keeper, sell it for more than you paid. That's how quite a few of the regulars here increase their gym budget.

No you didn't, there are no GHR's for $90. You might have seen a back extension for $90 but not a ghr. They don't and functionally can't have a small footprint.

If you.ve never tried the move look on youtube and see if you can try a ghetto version they are really a killer and very very effective, the ghetto version just isn't as secure and "comfotable" as the real thing.

I realize now it was just a roman chair type thing.

I'll take your persuasive word and look into it more. I am not too excited by such a device, but maybe it will be worth it despite the lack of flashiness (if there is such a thing as flashiness to workout equipment; I consider a squatting rack to be flashy, while a flat bench or something like that is not... so subjective). Thanks.

Posterior chain development is absolutely the way to go for bodybuilders and strength athletes alike. It will give you the leverage to handle the hefty weights necessary to get past plateaus. Painful as it is, I would recommend saving your funds and buying a full scale GHR or Reverse hyper. Rogue makes excellent, affordable versions of both of these, and you can check out the Sorinex FNGHD as well. If you're unwilling to go that route, look at the EliteFts floor GHR and the Sorinex PMGHR.

It gives variety in training by being able to do all the pressing movements in their leverage counterpart. Plus I think the newer PT multi-press is unilateral which makes it a little more like Hammer, not much, but a little more.

Why the Powertec suggested? I just tried to find pricing on it, and I didn't even manage to find it in the $500 range, let alone $400 range. wut

Roman chair squat / GHR thingy all in one

IDK, worse ROM compared to a true GHR?
