Anybody feel like as they are playing they are wasting their time that they could be using to be outside, working on your car, out with friends, with your girlfriend etc etc. Ive been a gamer all my life and theres times where i feel like i could be doing something productive. keep in my mind i have a job that pays good and i go to school and i have a clingy gf. i dont hang out with my friends as much as i would like but it doesnt bother me that much.
anyway ive been thinking of building a gaming cpu since ive been a consoler my whole life and i know this will take a good chunk of money and time out of my life. just wondering if anyone feels that they are wasting their youth playing video games or not.

Its all how you decide to spend your free time. I was thinking like that too before and tried to quit gaming but i would just end up watching TV instead, or browsing the internet. Its just another way to kill free time. As long as you are not addicted to MMOs and most of the time can put a game down whenever you need to do something else, gaming is perfectly fine.

not if you play recreationally. I only put in about 8 hours a week when a new game comes out and about 4 during the summer.

gaming is what i do when i have nothing else to do, so i do it purely to waste time. if i had better things to be doing, i'd probably do them, but i enjoy kicking ass on cod & battlefield and will continue to do so

I guess it really depends on how much time you actually spend gaming, and whether or not it impacts your life negatively...i.e. you can't find a job because you spend 10+ a day gaming.
I find myself gaming only in the evening, usually within hours of going to bed. Just a time killer.

I know people who would say i waste money and time on snowboarding, but not a single fuk was given.
During winter i spend 500-1000 dollars a season on season passes/random new gear/etc and am gone up there almost every weekend that i have spare time..

srsly thought this last night, and it was a sobering thought thinking that I might have to give gaming up to be more productive (kinda got addicted over the summer, trying to ween myself off). Figured I'd play games I can play at my own pace for a while, mostly single player time killers, so I don't feel compelled to play a lot so I can compete with others online. I get addicted to the competitiveness.

gaming gets a bad stigma because no1 likes the stereotypical gaming nerd
u see a man who skateboarded for 8 hours a day, ppl will be like wow u are determined
a man who games 8 hours a day is a straight waste of life lol
even tho both are hobbies and neither is necessarily better than the other.

for real. if e-sports ever takes off the world will be a better place.
on sunday i do nothing but talk about football (total waste of time) to my family and friends but if i pulled that **** with gaming i'd be labeled a nerd etc.

Top Starcraft players are making good money + sponsorships up the ass
The first place team at the Dota 2 tournament a few months ago won a million USD. (200k for each member of the team)
This is probably just the beginning.

I figure I work hard enough being a slave for corporate America. If I wanna gel and enjoy time in a virtual world why not? Definitely not a waste of time. As long as you're working or going to school or doing something with yourself you've earned the right to spend some of your free time gaming.

I work 20+ hours a week and am a full time student, I workout, I go hard on the weekends at parties. When I'm in my room and have some time to unwind, I have no problem playing video games. I don't care what anyone else thinks of my hobbies. If they have the time to criticize what I do, then their life can't be any better.

Theres a big difference between skating and gaming. Thats like saying playing basketball and gaming are the same.
You just cant let gaming take over your life, gaming has its way of taking control over some people. It happened to me when I was 15 with halo 2 me and my buddies got addicted to that game and spent hours upon hours playing. Then I woke up one day and was like wtf? and just quit.
At the end of the day everyone is different and everyone lives a different way. Just because you enjoy gaming doesnt mean thats all you do. I enjoy gaming but I also enjoy sports(playing and watching),skateboarding, lifting weights, drinking, partying, hanging with friends, music etc etc.....with gaming coming after everything else.
I kind of dont like when people bring up the people who do actually make a living gaming because its such a small percentage but I understand where they are coming from.Gaming to me is something that comes behind everything else .
I find it kind of sad that you hear about these people who get addicted to world of warcraft and play it every spare second they have, theres just much more to life than games. But like I said before everyone is different, people game on different levels and people choose what they want to do.

I feel you OP. Lately I've felt the same. Also, games just haven't been as fun as they used to be. After I beat Gears 3's campaign a few more times I'm only going to buy Zelda and Mario major console games. But even Super Mario Galaxy 2 didn't impress me one bit despite it's outstanding scores from all over the gaming world.
If I didn't have friends that went to my school to play xbox live with then I'd just quit that garbage entirely. Video games are too easy these days and nothing has impressed me in a long time. I'm pretty sure video games have just sucked for the most part these past 4-5 years but it could be that we're growing out of them.
Gaming is a hobby just like anything else. This is what people who look down on gaming don't understand. Sure it's a waste of time but so is watching sports, painting, drinking, playing piano, dancing, making photo albums, playing jenga or any of the other pointless sh!t people do. It's only really an issue if it takes over your life, which is why I don't play MMOs anymore. But it's no worse than the other ways people spend their freetime. I don't really see gaming as equal to skating/playing sports but that's just because I think e-sports/MLG are queer as hell. If it's your life goal to play StarCraft in Korea then by all means go for it.

Theres a big difference between skating and lifting. Thats like saying playing basketball and lifting are the same.
You just cant let lifting take over your life, lifting has its way of taking control over some people. It happened to me when I was 15 when I wanted to look better - me and my buddies got addicted to the gym and spent hours upon hours lifting and cooking. Then I woke up one day and was like wtf? and just quit.
At the end of the day everyone is different and everyone lives a different way. Just because you enjoy lifting doesnt mean thats all you do. I enjoy lifting but I also enjoy other [wastes of time which are fun].....with lifting coming after everything else.
I kind of dont like when people bring up the people who do actually make a living lifting because its such a small percentage but I understand where they are coming from. lifting to me is something that comes behind everything else .
I find it kind of sad that you hear about these people who get addicted to the gym and they're there every spare second they have, theres just much more to life than working out. But like I said before everyone is different, people exercise on different levels and people choose what they want to do.
Fixed that for you. I wouldnt even call myself a gamer, but your analogy is bullsht. Both are things that waste time for fun. One has a more socially positive reward, but its the same thing when you look at it. People can be "addicted" to anything they enjoy in an unhealthy way...

Im not sure what you tryed to prove with that post but if your saying bball and gaming are the same your wrong.Basketball is great cardio and keeps you in shape.Gaming helps you gain weight and does absolutely no benefit for your body. Also with lifting,it makes you stronger, more attractive and you gain confidence.Gaming does none of these.I know what you mean people can be addicted to anything but being addicted to something that benefits the body and mind is better than being a video game addict. You can spend hours playing cod, what do you have to show for it?A good K/D?If you play hours of ball or lift regulary what do you get?A sweet jay and a desirable physique.
And for the drinking/partying that you said is waste of time, personally when I go out with my friends something always happens that is memorable and me and my friends will always have those memories with us.When I game theres really nothing memorable for me.

everything is a waste of time, as long as you finish your work & studying, i don't see why video games are a negative impact. IMO it carries the same weight, in terms of effectiveness and mental stimulation (for some games it could be considered a superior means of mental stimulation in comparison to other pastimes), as hobbies such as weight lifting ( which I also do), wasting away on Facebook, playing some pointless game of football/sport, watching some pointless game of sport, listening to the radio, watching TV, reading fiction novels, etc.
The alternatives aren't convincing enough for me to turn away from let's say strategical warfare in SCII to something with less stimulus such as facebook "chatting" or reading some bull**** fiction book (unless it's a classic or n<19th century novel, the rest is POS waste of time imo).

Gaming is far from a waste of money. As long as u arent paying to play, you're saving money because it occupies ur time rather than having to go spend money to do something. Not gona all out say wasting time because it does improves strategic thinking and reaction time so its like a video game sodoku i guess

If you have a life, it's not like you're going to skip out on a bunch of events because you want to play games instead. If you are in a bad social spot though and don't have much of a life, then games just keep you in that insulated world.

Single player games are a time killer when i'm bored. Thats all i stick to these days, playing online in BF3 and COD just make me angry cause i suck and die all the time :(

Nope it's not. If you think it's fun, it's not a waste of time. If you got no job, no social life (everyone needs this, trust me) and no goals with life, then yes, it's a problem.
I enjoy a good singleplayer story just as much as I enjoy clubbin at times ( don't think it's that much fun at all ).

If anyone says its a waste of time and then states "working or socializing or gf" as some type of another answer is an idiot. Your answers are coming from being socially trained to think they are some how more IMPORTANT than anything or biological. to say one is a waste of time more so than the other is fcking the most retarded thing any logical rational person could ever hear or see being said. none of which r inherently more or less important.
the only instance something is a waste of time is if you feel as though you're not enjoying yourself.
I swear people are so brainwashed/have no understanding how their tiny little brains works and why they think the ways they do. its sad :(
To the dood who said "when im with my friends i have all deez memories" LOL ya those memories man they gonna be good when you're a corpse. people act like that there is some grand purpose in life and if you're not WORKING or FCKING its a waste of time.

It really just depends on your priorities. I'm in grad school for engineering, so studying is my top priority. Any gaming that I do is time that isn't spent studying. I believe it is a waste of time, because I could be doing something else to expand my mind. However, like the op, I have spent my entire life playing video games and I really don't want to let that go for some reason.
Edit: holy **** my post sounds poetic

I think a lot of it comes from competition. Gaming can allow fairly weak and unskilled people escapism and the opportunity to be very good and competitive at something, which I don't see much problem with. When they underperform then the 'gamer rage' kicks in and fun goes out of the window

Short Answer: No, it provides enjoyment
Long Answer: If gaming consumes all of your free time, yes, yes I would say it's a waste of free time. Rather, wasted potential.
The long answer only applies if gaming runs your life and it's the only thing you do. There are tons of hobbies that do not provide long-term benefits, but we do them because we enjoy them. Gaming and Skydiving, a year after doing either does it really matter? Can you apply either to your life? Did you gain anything other than enjoyment and a story to tell? I jumped out of a plane vs I was the best a videogame. The only real difference is what people will perceive each as, and with that, who cares what that person thinks? It's your enjoyment.
The idea is to balance how your free time is used, you definitely want to include hobbies that yield long-term benefits, yet you also need to enjoy your life and free time. What are you getting out of your free time? What will you have to show for your free time a year from now? Balance is everything

Most of my friends who arent gamers just sit around with their wives and watch ****ty TV shows and drink beer and eat ice cream all night.
This. I have 2 different groups of friends basically, ones that play games, ones that hardly ever play games. The ones that don't are usually the type to just watch tv, go out occasionally, and watch more tv. So I figure, why watch tv when you can play games and get more entertainment instead (IMO). Watching TV usually bores me unless it's something in sports that interest me (like the baseball playoffs going on now).
Work, gym, videogames, go out for drinks on weekends (or whatever fits your schedule appropriately), that's usually my pattern.

Depends man, my friend just dropped $60 on Rage and he says it's terrible so that's money down the drain. My brother just bought The Witcher 2 for 40bucks which we both think is terrible so that's another hit. It all depends on what games you're buying that's for sure.

I too personally have been putting a lot of thought into this one as well.
When I was like 6months old I got glasses for my eyes, and then at an early age I got a Super Nintendo, because playing video games with my eye patch helped my eyes. Well been a long time since then and a lot of video games. I did sports as a kid so I never was fat, but I was always a lot smaller that other guys usually in sports.
High School played WoW, from end of 8th grade to after graduation I played. Quit right before my freshmen year of college. When I played I always had the excuses of oh these are my e-friends we bffs for life kinda crap w/e that stupid excuse is. Been almost 2 years since I quit and I don't really remember any of it. I may have a flashback to a moment of the game I remember or a time I was playing with friends and something happened, but I don't remember killing Boss X on that one day and that phat loots I got.
I would say I am a competitve person when it comes to gaming, so I can't really just play Halo or CoD or Dota or w/e, I have to be the ****ing **** at those games. I am not intense to be #1, but I generally play until I can beat 90% of players and totally **** on new kids (mean, but to get point across).
Another thing I noticed was in college I started to smoke weed, and I eventually made bad habits. I would smoke my bong alone, and that I realized was a trigger to playing video games for like 2 hours instead of doing whatever else I had to do.
tl;dr - I have the same dilemma. I played a lot of video games, now almost 21years old and now I wish I didn't waste my HS career playing video games and don't want to waste my college one that way too.
Do what you have always done and get what you've always got. I noticed a trend that during parts of my life when I didn't play video games because I was busy / had a girlfriend / whatever, I was actually pretty happy. Not saying I quit video games forever, but smoking weed and playing video games online every weekend vs. going out meeting people / girls etc.... kinda regret it.
Typed this out pretty poorly, because I was reflecting on my experience for this, but I think I've come to a point where new games aren't really that appealing (look lame / look like a game I already played etc). Looking back a year later after quitting my 4year WoW Career amassing over 300days /played. Fun times were had, but I regret all the things I could have done. If I started going to the gym instead of playing WoW my freshmen year of high school... holy ****.
-Note: I haven't read any posts besides OP and the 1rd post, but I personally don't think I could ever play an MMO again.
Edit: Read some other posts...
-Agreed that a lot of new games are **** / aren't really game changing (i.e. Halo was crazy! But Halo 4 to Halo 3, its just meh)
-On part of online gaming like WoW and stuff, you really only can talk about it to other WoW kids anyway, because if you start talkin WoW to somebody who doesn't play, its like WTF are you talking about, and since you play it so much and its a big part of your life (if you play it a lot like I did) then there's just not much connecting you can really do with people who don't play, and then when you quit you're gonna almost feel like a lost puppy who had to start doing the things they should have been doing years ago such as going to the gym and talking to girls.
I personally getting out because I have wasted too much time smoking weed / playing video games. I plan on finding new hobbies that I could maybe one day create a business (not selling WoW gold / winning video game tournaments) such as photography. Something that I can share with somebody. Yeah its ****ing badass killing the games hardest boss, but if the only people you share that with are e-people who once a new game comes out and you split your seperate ways, then its just something cool you did, and you think is cool, but can't really share your excitement of killing the boss to your friends who don't play that game with you.

I think gaming makes you more intelligent. Gives you critical thinking skills as well as hand eye coordination. There have been many studies that show watching TV your mind goes into a part coma.
I won't ever quit gaming.

I work in the gaming industry as an artist. So no, i don't feel like i am wasting my time.
If i wasn't playing any games, then i would feel like i am wasting my time and my talents to research other assets.
Gaming has evolved into something more than the typical hobbie, gaming feels like a second part time job to me.

Averaged out , games are a very inexpensive hobby
At least for me
This.
Besides, it's how you choose to prioritize. Gaming is one of my favorite hobbies. There are a lot of other forms of entertainment that I dont engage in that frees up time to allow me to play games. For example I dont watch much TV and I dont play sports, other than working out.

The OP is just a BS existential question. Is doing anything a waste of time or $ if you're just going to die? The only valuable answer to the question is rational and contextualized.
Depends man, my friend just dropped $60 on Rage and he says it's terrible so that's money down the drain. My brother just bought The Witcher 2 for 40bucks which we both think is terrible so that's another hit. It all depends on what games you're buying that's for sure.
compare it to golf, vechicles, hunting, and even going to the gym, time spent averages out even when buying $60 items

It depends on the time spent. Obviously some people get more than their money's worth at the gym. Hunting is a poor example since you should be eating what you kill IMO(dat deer meat). Vehicles are fugging retardedly expensive, I think I dumped like 15k into my 88 CRX this year =/

I've been having this conversation with myself for years. Each year I get older I feel less and less inclined to keep up with the latest and greatest games and I keep getting old "nostalgic" games. I am slowly but surely losing interest in videogames as I get older. When I was 12 My parents told me I would lose interest in videogames when I got older and I didn't believe them; they were right.
World of Warcraft was really the last straw. I had a few real life friends that played it and I have to admit it was a lot of fun while it lasted, a lot of great memories. But we eventually disconnected and we all stopped playing eventually. This was back in 2008 - 2009. When I quit WoW I went back to playing UT2004, which I have been playing for close to 8 years now. That is one of the only games I play now, along with Team Fortress 2 with a couple real life friends.
I love my gaming computer, it kicks ass, but I realized after I built it that it would not bring me the joy I was looking for in life. Even after pre-ordering Star Wars The Old Republic I felt like I had made a mistake, even though I absolutely loved the series as a kid. I had a sort of mental breakdown with videogames a couple months ago and I destroyed almost all of my games.
I now force myself to be more sociable and stuff, along with more time invested with school work. And when I don't feel like going out I'm on the misc. or I'm reading investment / money management books, trying to make the best of myself. I feel it is a better use of my time.

I feel exactly the same way.. built a gaming PC towards the end of this August, and I must say building it was extremely fun. However, until now I've only really played through one game (mass effect 2). battlefield 3 looks alright but I won't be able to max it, skyrim looks pretty awesome, diablo 3 looks ok, counterstrike: go seems cool as well.. these are all games that I used to play the prequels of back in high school.
I'm strongly considering getting rid of my desktop because thus far I don't really play many games on it.. considering I'm going to graduate this semester I feel like my time would be better spent socializing and doing things that are productive.. video games seems likes something to do when you're settled down.
idk my mind is full of ****
