I've read many threads on this subject and wanted to make a poll to see some statistics.

Most bb's tan in stages ... what stage are you referring to?
Myself
Fake'n'bake = 2-4 weeks before if I bother to at all
The rest is either night before and/or morning of.

I'm an amateur and will make my first show this Saturday. I'll apply two pro tan coats on Friday, another on Saturday morning, and a coat of dream tan an hour before competition. I don't have an idea of what "stage" are you referring to s-=

1 coat protan the night before, shower in morning then add a second coat of PT. Then dream tan mixed with cooking spray prior to stage. Im a really white dude with dry skin and using this protocol gave me the look in my avatar.

Fake'n'bake or open sun is a stage of tanning, protan is a stage of tanning, dream tan is a stage of tanning (or whatever product you choose), even sheen coat is a stage of tanning. Everyone seems to have their preference when they do each of these.

I like to tan for a month leading up to the stage just to get my body evenly colored and add a bit of color. The final tanning application I do the night before and morning of.

You appear to have a nice consistent tan including your neck, face, scalp, even around the eyes. How do you manage to do that, whereas so many BB-ers I see go up on stage looking multi-colored, like a reverse-raccoon, Hamburglar, etc.? A general patchwork of multi-colored complexions, above the neck. To me, it looks borderline ridiculous to have a tan that's so profoundly uneven.
Bear in mind I have no experience with contest prep yet. With using the products you mention, was it pretty easy to get the even coloring above the neck? If so, why then do so many NOT do it?
Also, I don't want to be a big bronzed slimy mess at the show, using paint rollers, and so on. So, with the exception of applying a little posing oil, is your solution a "dry" situation?

I use a Loreal sunless tanner product on my face and neck in the week leading up to the contest which gives a bit of a base and then right after I am done applying dream tan, I mix the Loreal with the left over dream tan on my hands and rub the mixture on my face, head, neck, etc. And yes, it comes out very even.
No, this is not a dry solution. Anytime you use dream tan, it rubs off pretty easily. I always try to wait as long as I can to apply the dream tan (but trying to accurately judge stage time is a challenge). Pretty much once its applied you cant put clothes back on or sit on a seat very well. I am always amazed by the guys who run right back stage and immediately put on their dream tan......then they sit on the edge of a chair for HOURS waiting. I like to leave a little cushion, but try not to have to stand around for more than a half hour or so.

I would tan up to a couple days out, just don't burn. If you're that pale, ummm is DT#2 all you're planning on putting on before going on stage?

I would assume so, that's all I was instructed to purchase. 2 tubs of dream tan #2

Well I suppose as always on here that opinions are going to vary about this. First I doubt that you'll use even one jar of DT. I usually get 2 shows per jar. Also DT by its self is good but I feel that you should be darker underneath if you're a pale person. It's too late for you to get a skin tan so look at either a dark spray tan or something like ProTan as Oak mentioned. Also thinking about something to add as a sheen coat before you stage. PAM or muscle sheen are the most popular. LIGHT SHEEN don't get carried away and look shiny/watery.
