Hi, ive just started training a 6"11 professional basketball player who needs some serious calf training but none of the standard machines work for him and hes not comfortable using the barbell technique - having the weight needed for his calfs on his shoulders. Ive tried the calf raise machine, doing it on the leg press, ive tried using the hamstring curl machine but sitting upright, ive tried giving him a step and some dumbbells but that didnt really give him a burn, only thing I can think of is more reps? Any ideas?

Why would a pro BB player need a bunch of direct calf training?

Plyo jumps at varying speeds and depths will work his calves as well. Plus you get the added benefit of him actually jumping (god forbid).

You don't need to add weights in order to add force to a joint.

AH, I realise I have made a bit of an error in the way I described this person. Let me explain more fully, as by saying he is professional I accidentally misled you, he is not CURRENTLY professional playing NBA or anything like that. He is 16 - But he is in the british olympic training academy and was one of the players who just won the under 18s european basketball championships for the GB team. There is no doubt he WILL be worldwide professional as he is incredibly talented but still young.

The point is, his coach has told him to BULK UP - due to gaining so much height he is quite lanky. Obviously, I have given him plyo workouts including jump training, but I figured adding strength to the calfs was probably a good idea.

Sorry for misleading you into thinking he is an adult professional.

Calf strength?
I'm not sure if strength of the calf muscles has ever been something that's been addressed... unless you're talking about SIZE/hypertrophy of the calf muscles..

So his coach asked him to bulk up and you are worried about his calves?

They are one of the smallest muscle groups of the body and they dont really help him 'bulk up''

If you stick to the big compound movements and continue with plyo work, the calves will grom IF they will at all.

Plometric work is strength work?

You want him to get bigger calves, but still be able to jump.. so AVOID high reps(slow twitch) those type of fibers will be basically dead weight at his ankles..
-Incorporate a Lot of of plyo jumping
-Incline Sprints
-Sprints in sand will KILL your calves.
-Jump Rope(You'll need a long rope..)
-If you truly want an isolation, have him try donkey calf raises.

I would say the calves are 99% genetic, and if one were trying to bulk up it is the least of their worries. Single leg dumbbell calf raises for an exercise.

Im not trying to be a jerk or offend you in anyway but if this guy is so high profile, how did you get to train him? Also, are his calves actually small or just high?

If he wants size, go heavy.

If he wants strength, go heavy.

Srs. I train mine as heavy as possible in the 4-8 rep range, and mine are pretty big/strong.

Strength on Mon, Agility on Wed, Power on Fri

most tall lanky bballers are lacking lateral quickness which this agility workout addresses. power and strength are pretty common sense. ive used this program myself.

Note: i have hallway written down for the plyos that would usually use a ladder because i didnt have access to a ladder. i used the squares of tiles as my ladder.

Lols I would never hire you.

1) who cares if he doesnt like the bar method, tell him to stfu .
2) You tried to make it sound like you had a famous client, lol fail.
3) 19yo virgin posing as a personal trainer, lols.
4) He's worried about his calfs
5) Doesn't know what hes doing
6) Thinks because he is working out with this kid that he is a personal trainer
7) Thinks bigger calfs will make him jump higher, then someday someone is going to ask this kid how he jumps so high and hes going to say its because of michael300891 and his awesome calf routine and everyone is going to want to hire you and you will have your own calf training dvd and gimmick exercise machine like the total gym or shake weight.

GL bro ill look for you on the infomercials.
