Posion...What are your thoughts on the Silvia paired with the Rocky grinder? Worth the extra $$ or go with the Gaggia Classic and Baratza.
AHHHH, NONONO!
I owned silvia for 4 years, and have a deep seated hatred for that hussy. Biggest cause of frustration and pain ever. Here's why: an espresso machine has two jobs, namely to heat water to the proper temp, and deliver it to the coffee at the correct pressure.
Silvia does neither.
She is so inconsistent its ridiculous. Sure, Silvia's best shot may be better than Gaggia's, but you'll never be able to reproduce it again on purpose. Gaggia's are much easier to pull quality shots consistently, and they have other bonuses: small aluminum boilers which heat fast in the morning; boiler heating elements outside the boiler so they won't burn out if the boiler is low on water (which can happen with Silvia).
So buy a Gaggia, or a $1200 HX. There's nothing worthwhile in between.
Grinders: The two best budget espresso grinders are the Baratza Preciso, and revamped Cunill Tranquilo. Both are better than Rocky. The Cunill has some pretty neat features for the price, like electronic dosing.
Let me know if you need more help, and if you ever want a good HX machine, I can get you a deal on the best in class HX.

Update on the Ethiopia Yirgacheffe #1 Wote Konga....This is a singularly unique bean and roast. I combine this with (shut up) a Columbian-heavy breakfast blend that I am impressed with from Sam's Club. I used about 25 beans to 60 of the BB into the burr grinder. Water hit about 200 degrees. Poured the grind into the French Press and added water. Stirred it for about 4 minutes.
Beautiful chocolate bronze color. Flavor is very complex, and can be overwhelming on its own (based on past experience with the Ethiopians) but was perfect in the blend. Most cominant note is the expected blueberry, but with a twist. It reminds me of blueberry mixed into fresh whipped light cream. There is a hint of vanilla, very slight citrus note, and oddly enough an almost undetectable dash of tobacco that enhances the baritone notes. Bright fruity and deep all at the same time, this is definitely one of the top cups of coffee I have ever had.

I can't stress enough: avoid Silvia. I freaking hate her.
So much info to read and go through before I make this purchase. Who do you recommend, brand wise, for an HX machine?
Astra Pro. There's very little info out there on it, but it's where I put my money. I've owned gaggias, Silvia, an expobar Pulser, and now the Astra, and there's simply no comparison. You'd have to spend $800 more to get the Astra's equal. Here's why she's better:
Made in the USA
Excellent customer service from Astra
All stainless construction, including frame
Whopping 2.6l stainless steel boiler, by far the biggest in its class
Beefy Sirai pressurestat
English pipe fittings (screwed, NOT soldered)
Commercial grade water pump
Outstanding performance in a compact, beautiful design
The bottom line is that Astra uses the same components in ALL their machines, from their $15k 4 group machine down to the $1200 Pro (with size reductions where needed). No other manufacturer is making a machine of this quality for less than $2000. Why is it cheaper? Because it's made in the US, not Europe. I've been in the factory and watched these old guys putting them together by hand, seen inside them, and paid my own cold hard cash for one. You'll never need to buy another machine, and you can be sure this machine will not be holding you back. I've served espresso drinks for 2 hours straight on mine, no problem. It's a steam monster because of the boiler size.
They also have the Gourmet model, which has a 4.x liter boiler, and a rotary pump, with manual or semi-auto options, and pour-over or plumbed in options. Thing is obviously bigger than the Pro, but it IS a commercial machine on the level of a $4k Elektra, for $1500 less.
edit: I can get The Gaggia Classic paired with a Barazta Virtuoso Preciso for 650 shipped. May just have to.
IF you buy a Gaggia, don't buy a Classic. Every gaggia is the same, internally; compared to the $200 Pure or Color, the Classic gets you a snazzier exterior and a 3 way solenoid...that's it. The piping, wiring, pump, boiler, pressurestat, etc, are all 100% the same. So buy a Pure or Color, or an Astra Pro.

Product Description
THE CUP
Yellow Bourbon microlot. Heavy bodied and fruity with a tart cherry acidity and distinct cocoa after taste; GRAINPRO BAGS.
ADDITIONAL NOTES
Average temperatures: 18-23 degrees Celsius
Average precipitation: 2000-2400 mm
Total trees of this variety: 9,600
Total area of this variety: 2.4 ha
This is one of the most progressive and quality focused farms around the world. The view of the farm is impressive. It looks like a perfect variety garden.
This is one of a few different experimental single variety projects at Granja La Esperanza. Everything at this farm is focused towards quality improvement. Data for every imaginable detail is logged in order to find correlations between different variables and positive results.
The warehouse were coffee is stored is temperature and humidity controlled.
Each new variety projects takes about 10 years to be in full production. The first five years are only to determine if the project is viable (only a few acres are planted). The next five years is what it takes for the variety to be in full production.
Varieties are bred selectively to produce only pure offspring.

Couldn't resist another sampler since it was still up on the site. Went through the last 2lbs in exactly one month.

Damn, they're all REALLY good right now. The Ethiopia is great, but don't expect it to be the same.

Or this one:

both will match the stainless steel of my new house and are small enough to leave out with issue... do you see any forseeable issue with either of these?

How many cups do you drink per day? How lazy are you? Fee things beat a clever dripper for $20 and a capresso infinity or baratza encore grinder. If you drink multiple cups, you need another solution. So tell me more.

OK, you NEED a grinder. For some reason people tend to fixate on the brewing mechanism, but the grinder is equally, or more, important. Here's why: coffee goes stale quickly, and ground coffee goes stale much faster than whole bean (ground = more surface area and exposure to oxygen). At the pace of a couple cups a weekend, a lb will last you a couple months. It's shelf life as whole bean is 1 month max, 3-4 days ground (this is from the roasting date; wait, you don't know when your coffee was roasted? It's stale, guaranteed).
So...the best way to improve your coffee is to buy fresh-roasted coffee (less than a weekout of the roaster). Buy a grinder. Store it as whole bean in the freezer. Take out the weekends coffee Sat morning, and leave the rest in the freezer. Grind before brewing, and use whatever method you prefer which uses 195-200 degree water (clever dripper, frenc press, or a good machine).

If it's unclear, it is a cone filter, with a stopper on the bottom. The problem with cone filters is brew time: the water flows through immediately, with lower extraction over other methods. The clever fixes the issue with a stopper on the bottom. Put the filter in, put the grounds in, pour 200 degree water, stir, and wait 4 minutes. Set the whole shebang on top of the cup, and it drains, leaving all grounds in the clever. It simply kicks ass.

I used to do this at my old work, but I found that waiting more than a minute left my coffee very bitter
I wasn't using special beans (starbucks I think?) and the water wasn't measured but was definitely hot from the microwave

A couple things:
I hate to say it, but crappy coffee tastes bad. Buy the best coffee you can afford, it's a lot easier to dial in the equipment when you know the coffee is not the problem.
Grinding too fine will be make it bitter. It needs to be a medium grind.
Water hotter than 200 will make it bitter. A microwave can heat water to 212, or higher. It takes 5-6 minutes at ambient home temps for water to cool to 200 or so.
I can guarantee you the clever is one of the best brew methods, and capable of a world class cup, if you follow the above. It's easy.

Supposedly this new model does away with the drip control switch and instead has an auto bloom programmed into the drip cycle, as well as an auto drip stop feature that allows you to pull the carafe away and stop the brewing until you replace it

I had some fantastic espresso in reykjavik. There are 2 main coffee 'chains', both of which roast their own, one with in store roasters, so it's fresh. The third single location was absolutely fantastic, world class. Overall, they have way more good coffee in reykjavik than we have in La, even though la is like 572 times as big.

Do you really want a super auto? If so, saeco builds good super autos. If you can take the time to learn to pull your own shots, a little more money buys you a gaggia and grinder that allows you to brew far better espresso.
What are your needs?

btw, seattle coffee gear is fully legit, so the 1 year warranty through them is good. also, you might consider the square trade extension, if it's cheap.

I know nothing at all about brewing espresso...just love the stuff and would like to be able to make it at home. most of the machines people have recommended to me have been like 1-2k and I don't really want to drop that much...just looking for something that will make good espresso but doesn't cost a grand...

Those two are the premier budget option. You can be brewing the best espresso in miles with those two. Yes, the grinder is pricey, but trust me, the grinder is even more important than the machine, once you get a real machine with a real pump, like the Gaggia.
This setup is easy to learn on, will blow away any super auto, and resale value stays high. Only other thinyou:d need is a tamper and fresh roasted coffee.
