I also posted this in the Over 35 section where mslman71 helped out a lot. He is on the same road as me. But here is my post if anyone has "after" stories. Thanks a ton. Jon
Input on my shoulder problem please? (Replacement maybe)Hello all. Brief history: Started training at 14, now I am 39, always natty, put on a good 100 lb in that time. 20 years ago I hurt my rotator cuff and the surrounding tissues playing football. It hurt like hell but rehabbed it and never needed surgery. I kept working out over the years, when that shoulder seemed to act up I stopped my workout, no big deal. And I am pretty pain tolerant.
Anyway twice in the past five years it hurt almost to the point of tears. The first time in 2005 the doctor did an MRI and said I had bone deposits in there, no big deal, I could get them scraped off anytime. So I left it alone then. I figured its just pain, no other damage, just work out through the pain. (This was probably my mistake, I have learned.)
Then things changed. Last month it flared up again, bad, I could not even sleep. I got another doc, he said I have no bone damage, no structural problems to ligaments, etc, but I had bone spurs....and "OH YEAH you have advanced arthritis in there like an elderly person!" WTF! It's not good when a doctor says "This is highly unusual." They should temper their words a bit IMO... And the wear and tear has caused advanced arthritis. And that I would need a shoulder replacement within 5-10 years! I almost passed out when he said that. Talk about out of the blue.*
I am sure others here have similar issues since we all lift. What advice can I get? I will do all I can to prevent further damage, which means no heavy lifting any more *--- reps over 12, good stretching routine, etc.*
When you get a replacement is it just life-changing, or is it not that bad? Will I be able to play golf when I get older, will it look normal with a shirt off? Do any resistance training? It is a big part of my life, I love it. That news just knocked me back mentally for a while. Leaving his office the nurses saw me walking down the hall in my under armour shirt and shocked, pale face being 6'4" 250 lb. and looked frightened, ha. "Are you OK sir????" Then as I sat at the waiting place to check out, an elderly lady asked what I was diagnosed with and she did not help = "wow that is horrible!". ha ha, what was that about. A perfect ending to that visit I guess.
Just looking for some encouragement from those in the same game. I try to look at it as a wake up call at least to take better care of my body before I tear up something more, that is the only positive I can think of.*
I am getting a second opinion on Monday 8/8 since I am scheduled to get the bone spurs removed by the first doctor on 8/17.
THANK YOU if anyone can help!*
