View Full Version : Diet cokes
Yes, another one of these threads... Without the same stupid question though. I don't believe they affect weight loss in a negative way but had a thought.. Maybe they even help? Let me elaborate..
Earlier someone did a thread where he did a 600mg dose of caffeine and monitrred the sedentery calories/h. In the first hour it increased by around 20/h and remained elevated for hours after slowly lowering.
A diet mtn dew has 54mg caffeine, so while it's nowhere near 600mg, it's still caffeine.
Thoughts?

this definitely makes sense... green tea supposedly helps with weight loss b/c of the caffeine content, and same goes for weight loss supplements that contain caffeine... not sure if it directly helps burn calories but it may have something to do with the process

Personally I don't think it will help or hurt you a significant amount. Diet sodas aren't completely calorie free, there are still trace calories that will probably offset any advantages the caffeine will give you and that's the diet sodas that are listed as zero calories. Diet Mt Dew is actually listed as 10 calories per bottle and like you said it's far less than 600 mg of caffeine that it would actually take to burn the extra 20 calories an hour. I do however drink multiple diet sodas (mainly diet dr pepper cherry, cherry coke zero and sugar free energy drinks) daily as it helps keep my sweet tooth satisfied for almost no calories (not enough to make a difference). Just my 2 cents.
Didn't even know diets cokes had trace amounta of cals, that sucks.. Still nowhere mear enough to have any significant impact though, said something like 0.89g carbs or something lol. I could be wrong..... But I think that fits my macros lol

The problem with Diet Coke is the sweetners in them, In particular aspartame - They would not have an impact if you had the odd glass \ can of it but certainly having it on a regular basis will only work against you, For me I tend to find when I drink one I feel bloated around my Ab area, something I never want lol

i can attest that they do slow weight loss down. I was doing keto a while back and figured that since i couldn't take in hardly any carbs i needed something to at least feel like i was cheating. So i settled for coke zero drank coke zero and water and noticed barely 2 lbs of weight loss in 2 weeks. Couldn't figure it out until i looked at the sodium content in the coke zero and diet coke it was huge. Switched to strictly water for 1 more week and lost nearly 10 lbs. While alot of that was retained water weight i still read lighter on the scales and wasn't bloated at all like with the diet soda.

Yeah I've seen studies (up to you if you want to call it broscience) that the body can respond to aspartame similarly to sugar if it's ingested on a regular basis. This means a spike in insulin and a drop in blood sugar. I've never felt this personally and I used to drink a lot of diet Cokes. I typically felt energized after having it.

It's not broscience, but you are misinterpreting the studies badly.
1) Not, they do not cause an insulin spike in humans. That was tested. A insulin spike was seen in rats.
2) People who drink diet soda tend to be fatter. True... but isn't a fat person more likely to chose diet soda instead of full sugar soda?
3) It does seem to cause a slightly greater amount of hunger after ingestion of diet soda. This may be because the body is expecting calories from the sweet taste and not getting them. (But that is speculation on the researchers part)

Interesting. See I worked at a health food store for years through my teens and the owners were health freaks who took any chance they could get to bash anything that wasn't completely natural and organic. I need to be weary of what I hear through the grapevine I guess... And about the second point, my entire family is obese for the most part and all of them drink diet soda. Why? All of them are diabetic and their doctors tell them not to drink regular.

I personally prefer water in 99% of the time because:
1) diet coke definetly makes me more thirsty, water doesn't
2) it just tastes funny to me (too sweet, too artificial, they colour my teeth too much, they are too gassy)
3) the ingredients work quite agressively in my stomach
4) if I really fancy a sweet drink I have 1/2 glas of fruit juice and lengthen it with 1/2 glas of carbonated water.
I still get my daily caffein dosage - through a few shots of Espresso and green tea during the day. I drink both as they are, without milk, cream or sugar. Sometimes I use 1/2 tea spoon of honey and a dash of lime or lemon juice with the green tea.

How to eat cheese
I love cheese. If I would have to decide on the 100 most exciting tastes (except those sexual) I have experienced in my life, cheeses would probably occupy more than 50 positions. Gorgonzola, Stilton, Camembert ...
Cheese tastes absolutely great. A bite of cheese, then the mouth washed with some red wine, then a green olive, then cheese again. How food can excite the taste buds!
Yes, the taste buds. Not the esophagus, not the stomach, not the lining of the intestines, and not the anus.
Cheese and red wine are great in the mouth, but both are not really fit for full digestion.
Alcohol is a disturbance for the brain, and an unnecessary burden for the liver. I am opposed to any alcohol in my bloodstream.
Cheese is not quite as bad. But any protein-based food cured and processed long will undergo chemical changes that will likely render it inferior to fresh protein-based food.
In cheese, it's the tyramine.
The tyramine in cheese definitely triggers migraine headaches in me, and even when I don't end up with a full-blown headache, the digestion of cheese results in sub-optimal mental alertness and a general state of not feeling totally healthy.
With most cheeses, I have serious doubts as to whether they are fit for the human digestion.
On the other hand, I consume cheese almost every day.
How is that?
It's the Serge Kreutz diet.
I put the cheese in my mouth, and love it.
I just don't swallow it.
As for cheese, my principle is: spit it, don't **** it.
Observe yourself when eating some cheese. For example a Danish Blue.
Put it in your mouth, just the cheese, without bread.
It will have a strong effect on your taste buds.
Then move it to every corner of your mouth. You will notice that wherever the cheese first comes in contact with your taste buds, there is a strong sensation.
Then the sensation subsides. Enzymatic processes initiated by saliva totally destroy the cheese. I will turn it into a creamy and rather tasteless fluid.
So, why should you swallow this partially digested mess?
Not for the nutrients. Denatured proteins, cholesterol-heavy fats, and harmful chemical substances like tyramine.
Just have a container ready and spit it out. Then rinse your mouth with some red wine. You spit this out, too.
Now you can take a bite of food you actually will swallow. An olive, a slice of tomato, a bite of bread (if you have a good tolerance for gluten).
And now you are ready for the next cycle that starts with a bite of cheese.

54 mg... maybe, theoretically, yes it can be used in addition to a "healthly lifestyle" to help attain one's goal body weight and other marketing jargon. the effects will be negligible. if you want to do something with caffeine, then try EC. however that will not do much either. it will however let you maintain energy levels as you lower calories.

I used to drink 2-3 diet cokes per day and I don't believe that it has any real effect on weight loss as I've been able to successfully lose weight while drinking cokes as well as when not. I probably only drink 2-3 per week now but that is mostly because I drink more coffee and water and just can't fit in Coke any more. However, my weight loss progress hasn't changed noticeably as a result of cutting down on coke.
As far as aspartame goes, there is plenty of reputable, scientific research to prove it's safety. That being said, I'd never advise the excessive consumption of aspartame. But that can apply to anything. Your body only needs water and some type of basic calorie to live (carb, fat, protein) you can cut out anything else and it surely will not hurt you.

when drinking diet sodas. u must remember to get in your full amount of water 1st. in a typical day. u drink the same amount of liquids no matter what they come from. i always make sure i get down 30-40 oz of water before enjoying a diet soda at work.. just make sure ur not substituting diet soda for water..

You can argue something from any direction. What about caffeine in relation to cortisol levels? High cortisol levels supposedly lead to weight gain.
Just eat below maintenance and work your ass off and you'll lose weight.

I drink a can of Diet Dr Pepper a day with my lunch. I've given it up for a while to see if i notice a difference in way i felt and in the scale and didn’t see a difference. I don’t really drink it unless I’m eating food, don’t really like it to drink by its self. I do get in close to a gallon of water per day also.
Anything can be bad for your diet if you let it and anything that you moderate can fit into your diet. I’m sure if your getting ready for a competition it might be different since really every calories counts then, but for me I’m going to keep drinking my can of soda every day.

1. the caffeine will help
2. the carbonation might bloat you, which will make you feel fuller
3. might help from a mental aspect.

just finished my contest prep i was drinking 1.5l a day feelsgood man didnt change my body compisition or fat loss
I know this thread's ancient, but caffeine's effect on the human body in general is good. Caffeine's half life is 5 hours. That means if you consumed 600 mg of caffeine at 12:00, by 5:00 you would have 300 mg of caffeine left in your system. I train fasted most of the time and use caffeine as a pick me up, but more so because I experience an overall better workout.

while diet cokes have caffeine in them i think the important part you may be overlooking is the fact that diet coke has artificial sugar. there are other choices where artificial sweeteners arent present.
some experts say that when you ingest fake sugars your body "doesnt really know what to do with them" and therefore causes you to eat more to compensate for the fake stuff. altho there are many different types of aritifial sweetners (saccharin, sucralose, aspartame, ace-k) i tend to stay away from them all.
a few family members of mine got diagnosed with cancer and all they do is eat and drink fake sugar substitutes. were there other factors in their lives that probably led them to cancer? yes. but it always makes me wonder if they didnt have a 6pack of diet coke a day, etc would things be different.
feel free to question credibility of site. altho it makes you think twice doesnt it?

It's lost to time, but I once had a very interesting report about the harmful effects of Aspartame, the artificial sweetener used in most diet fizzy drinks.
It's connected to leg cramps, decreased vision, depression (chemical-based, not boohoo-based). I can't recall if there was any mention of how it affects fat loss (The title of the article was "Diet Coke NOT diet after all" or something like that, so that might offer a hint). Another thing I remembered is that one of the chemicals in Aspartame was derived from, or a broken down...something like that...form of the poison found in red fire ant's bite.
To the person who mentioned cancer, I recall several articles linking Saccharine to cancer.
Basically, I'd stay away from all of it. 64 grams of sugar may not be the healthiest thing to take in, but compared to the effects of some of these chemical artificial sweeteners its a better option.
Personally, I stick to Stevia, Xylitol, Yucan powder, Agave Nectar and other natural sugar alternatives.
By the way, stay away from Truvia. It's the worst stevia product out there.
I think there are some no-sugar added syrups that you can mix with fizzy water to get the coke flavour, and then you can mix in the sweetener of your choice.
