My father is a fabricator and has a lot of scrap steal laying around his shop. He is willing and able to build me a heavy duty dumbbell rack. The only problem is I have searched and searched online and am unable to locate any plans/diagrams for building one. I could go to a store and measure them but not sure how practical that would be.
I figured the height and length that I want from looking at one on-line. The only question 2 questions I have is
1.How far apart you all recomend spacing the steel where the dumbells sit on the rack?
2. What angle is the steel where the dumbells sit on the rack? I was thinking maybe 30 degrees but not too sure.
Reps for any help with this.
Thanks in advance

get the height and width measurements from a rack you like online. Measure your dumbells for where they will rest. 25-30 degress sounds about right to me. Use angle iron for the "shelfs".
edit: here's a real basic designed rack that will work as good as any.

all you'll need is:
2 pieces angle iron for each shelf
2 shorter pieces to hold them together(could use flat stock for the side pieces)
some square tubing for the uprights and feet
show your father that picture, give him the measurements you need and he should have no issue building it at all.

you could even angle the uprights for easier access to the heavy dumbells on the lower shelvs too if you want to jazz it up a little.

Do you already have the dumbbells?

Measure your dumbells for where they will rest.
The heaviest ones I currently have are 40lbs, do you know if they get much wider after that. I noticed from about 15lbs they get wider with every 5lb incriment.

Yeah, I have up to 40 pounders. Looking for heavier ones on Craigslist but they are hard to find for a cheap price.

I would turn the front angle iron of each shelf up side down (conpared to the picture). This will allow easier removal of the dumbbell, whilst still providing the strength afforded by the angle iron.
The security of the dumbbell whilst sitting on the rack remains unchanged, as they only "hang" by the rear weight head on the rear angle iron.
Also, the dimension needed between the angle iron shelf members would be approx. 5 inches. Using my design modification it would be less critical than if you orientated the cross members as shown in the picture.

Ugh, seeing something this high-quality is making me really regret buying this awkward PoS
