Backround:
Height: 5 foot 7 1/2
Weight: ~172
Fight Weight: 155
Age: 18
Experience: 3 years good wrestling. played some football.
I just joined a gym yesterday and im very excited. I don't have my license currently so i ride up with my mom who works next door. I am there usually from 1pm to 9pm. I can't stay in their gym during the day so i guess im going to have to sit outside their gym until they open up at 6pm again. I roll until 1:30pm then have to leave. I can come back ~ 5-6pm. Its a big sacrifice but im willing to do it. (boredom is horrible. The heat is horrible). I also can only go 3 days a week until i get my drivers licence and a car so i can drive their myself.
I just wanted to make this log to keep my motivation up and prove to myself that i can become a pro fighter.
Each day i train i will write in this journal type blog. I will update on every training day. I hope everyone can follow my journey and hopefully help me out with some things on the way. Thanks

DAY 1: So yesterday i went to Class all day long. I learned the omoplata. It was a weird move but i got it pretty well. I guess in this gym they don't teach you the basics off the bat, but its the best gym i got.
Later on the Black black instructor (look like he was around 150lbs) taught us class and after class i rolled with some guys who have been there for a while. I totaled about 4 tapouts. 3 was from the black belt instructor. I asked him to roll with me (LOL), because i wanted to see how a black belt would feel. I took him down twice (he said that it was impressive), but i was on top in his guard and HOLY CRAP. it was like an anaconda holding onto me. LOL. I couldn't move anything. He arm bared me and did some choke from the bottom and then choked me out again. But i learned and to be honest i think i did pretty good for the first day.
DAY 2: So today we did some BJJ. I got my Gi and it felt weird with it on. Very bulky and hot. lol. I ended up tapping out this guy for my first official tapout victory. He was a green belt. And i was white. We took off our Gi's though and went no gi. He tapped me out with an ankle lock. I just couldn't take it and i didn't want to be the hero who didn't tap out and broke his ankle.
We then did MMA class later on and we actually sparred a little bit. I felt so awkward. I JUST WANT TO KNOW HOW LONG IT WILL TAKE TO GET BETTER AT IT. It was weird and i felt very tired because i was nervous but i also wanted to do good... Tomorrow is the last class for the week that i can go to. I guess we will see how it goes.
I almost feel like humbled but crappy at the same time (after day 2). I mean i sparred with a guy and couldn't take him down (only tried once). I felt like crap because i though no one could stop my takedowns. He was 20lbs heavier than me but i don't take that as an excuse. Im going to work harder, roll more, and suck in everything the instructors tell me.
O and here my schedule:
MONDAY- off
TUESDAY- Weightlifting and Light run
WEDNESDAY- MMA
THURSDAY- MMA
FRIDAY- MMA
SATURDAY- off
SUNDAY- Weightlifting and hill sprints for conditioning
should i change anything here or no??? Also i will keep these logs down to a minimum 4-5 sentences in the future. sorry about it being so long.

Hey good luck bro. Here's what I think.
You are 172Lbs and you look pretty lean, but you will be a small 170Lber because you will only have 2Lbs to cut. You would be a good sized 155Lber. Not sure what your diet is like but if its not alright clean, then clean it up. Just by doing that and keeping up with cardio and as much MMA training as you can, you will hopefully drop a few pounds. It would be great if you could eventually get down to 161 or 162 and cut the rest.
Since you have 3 years of wrestling, you must have you weight cutting experience right?
I would also like to say don't rush into fighting right away. I was 15 when I started training and I was 18 when I had my first fight. your 3 years of wrestling will help you out a lot also, but make sure you are ready before you step into the cage.
As for your schedule, what kind of lifting are you doing? If you decide to take my advice and you want to fight at 155, I would suggest doing a lot of body weight exercises (Pushups, pull ups, chins, dips, squats, plyo pushups, jump squats, etc). Instead of doing a light run on tuesday I would say to just do sprints and hill sprints, just like you're doing on sundays.
Do you have money for a bus pass also? It would be a lot more beneficial for you if you could get to the MMA gym a couple more days a week. When I was training for my first fight, I was going in 6 days a week along with my conditioning and strength training.
GOOD LUCK! Hopfully this information helps you. I will definitely be following your log.

Thanks guys. Currently i cant get a ride there only with my mom UNTIL i get my licence. Hopefully that will happen in the next 1-2 months.
DAY3: I rolled a little bit in the morning and i tapped out once. (one guy got me in guillotine choke) I rolled with a 230 pounds muscle head. I took him down but he was almost rag dolling my body. I ended up doing better than he did against me (i think..lol) And he said he has a fight coming up.
I then sat outside for 3 hours and came back to the gym. We did boxing. Worked the bags for 30 minutes after shadowboxing 3 3 minute rounds. We then SPARRED!! I got hooked so much. Im a southpaw. I have short arms. I was landing, but there were guys there who had 1-5 years of experience over me. It was a rough time. I had a big headache. My cardio was HORRID. I felt the more movement i did the better i would do. Almost unpredictable like. But i gassed bad. My black belt instructor told me to tie a rope and bob and weave and throw punches. He told me to the DB clean and press 20 times and sprint up a hill and walk down. (ccuz i told him i wouldn't be there til wednesday..)
Im going to shadowbox tomorrow. Probably hit the heavy bag i have for 5 5 minute rounds to get my cardio up.
*So i have a couple questions if thats ok...
1)*** Will i get better at sparring with time. I learned that when i throw punches my chin goes out. I need to keep my chin down and traps up. Hands up more.
2)*** I always feel like saying (f THIS) and attacking like Wanderlie Silva does. Is that ok? I feel like just bombing the guy until he hits the cage and then take him down. (obviously we were only doing boxing but thats what i would do in mma)
thanks guys. my new schedule is below...
MONDAY- off.
TUESDAY- Body weight conditioning and shadow boxing.
WEDNESDAY- MMA
THURSDAY- MMA
FRIDAY- MMA
SATURDAY- Shadow boxing, heavy bag work.
SUNDAY- Weightlifting, HILL sprints.
Thanks everyone. I also asked how long it would take to get my first fight (yes, even though this was my third day..lol) they said they would let me know. and they said to just keep coming in. I got a long journey in front of me. but im willing to do anything. They also want me to compete in grappling (BJJ) tourneys or tourney before i fight.

YES. You will get better at sparring with time. When your sparring, try really focusing on your form and making sure everything you're doing is correct. I like to change my mind set every 20-30 seconds or so. (telling myself Im going to just defend for 20 seconds, then attack for 20 seconds, then jab for 20 seconds). I find that this helps a lot with fight control. If you can decide what you want to do, and then do it, you will have control. If that makes any sense. Keep your chin tucked and don't get discouraged...everyone starts where you are now.
2)*** I always feel like saying (f THIS) and attacking like Wanderlie Silva does. Is that ok? I feel like just bombing the guy until he hits the cage and then take him down. (obviously we were only doing boxing but thats what i would do in mma)
NO. During sparring in your Gym, this is not OK. First of all you shouldnt have left sparring today with a headache. If you are just starting out, you should be starting with light sparring. You shouldnt be looking to know your training partners out by any means. Next time you are sparring, really focus on keeping your chin tucked and defend yourself as much as you can.

thanks sooo much man. I can use your advice big time. thanks.
KEY POINTS i got from you
1) Chin tucked
2) Relax and work on each area (defending, jab, attacking, ect..)
3) Keep hands up and defend myself at all times, no matter what.

Day 4:
So guys. I haven't been able to get to MMA for a while now. So i went up to a wrestling thing and did some wrestling. It was a pretty good workout. Not much to it other than some wrestling stuff and having getting taught some tricks that i can use during JJ. pretty cool tricks. I have a full day of MMA tomorrow (Thursday), so i will get back to you tomorrow night after that.

Day 5:
So today i did some JJ in the morning. We learned some sweeps from butterfly guard. That went well. Everyone went home after so i didn't live roll at all in the morning.
I then waited for about 3 hours and came back that night. We did rolling later on and a lot of higher level guys were there. They taught me a lot. We learned some more sweeps from half guard on bottom. We then rolled. I went with a guy who has a main event pro fight (kickboxing i believe tho). I took him down which made me feel good but MAN, these guys hips wont let me pass at all. And i waste way too much energy trying to get by there leg so by the time 10 minutes go by im DEAD. I can feel my cardio is getting better though.
We then went on to MMA session for an hour at night. It made me mad because i go to that class so i can work with other peopel. All i did was shadowbox and hit the bags while hitting kicks on thai pads. Other guys worked in the cage.. when he said condiitoning at the end i asked him "are we going to switch in the cage?" And he responded to "Yea, well i didn't have a guy for you today so we will do it next time". It suks. I mean i could have done all this shadowboxing and heavy bag work at my house. I GO THERE because i want to work IN THE CAGE. WORK WITH PEOPLE. so im a little mad. (also i only can make it to class 2-3 times per week). But whatever.
Im going to improve better than anyone. I truly believe within a year i will be a solid force. I believe that i will grow more than anyone. Not being cocky but i am motivated for everything and anything. Cya guys later and thanks for following..

There is a sweet spot on the thigh that will open up most peoples tightest guard eventually. You should place your hand near his waist (or grab the belt, depending if its gi or no gi) and drive your elbow into it. Ask one of the more seasoned BJJ guys there to show you, he should know. I have a pretty tight guard and I can hold off for a while but I eventually open up. The pain is unbearable.
Keep asking and keep interested. Show your peers and your instructor(s) that you are interested in learning! If you put the time in to learn, they will usually put the time in for you. That's how it is at my gym anyways. The people who don't ask questions are the ones who never progress. Keep telling your instructor that you want to work more with other people and get some more hands on training. Have a chat with him and discuss your goals...He may be treating you this way because your are young but let him know that you are serious.
It's fine to think you will be a solid force in a year but saying it and doing it are 2 different things. Just keep focused, set short term goals, set long term goals, NEVER EVER EVER think you are at the top because you never will be...there is always room for improvement. If you think you are at the top, you will never progress anymore.

thanks man. Advice is always awesome.
EDIT: also to get my conditioning up im doing heavy bag rounds in my basement. I am going to work up the WORK TIME to REST ratio so im getting better and better on the time while decreasing the rest. Is this a good thing to do considering i got tired during sparring?
I mean, earlier today i just did 2 minute rounds. 1 minute rest. with 5 rounds total and i felt pretty winded. BUT i mean i was going pretty hard.
ALSO, should i be working cardio 6 days during the week? My lifting is fine. But for cardio should i do it everyday? Or 5 days a week? maybe MMA and then 3 days on top of that outside of class cardio? Im thinking about doing heavy bag rounds every day im not training. Maybe throw just speed at it one day for rounds. Then power into it the next day.. .thanks.

The best cardio for MMA is sparring/grappling IMO. Do as much of that as you can and then do some sprints+circuits on the side.

Day 6:
Morning) So today i went in and taught this kid some Wrestling (he was new). It was only me him and my black belt instructor. We went over running the pipe a lot and other things. It was a light but fun session.
EDIT: also, you know what funny is when i sit in the back of the MMA place and there are other cars in the next parking lot and you see them get out of there car and beep there car (as in ITS LOCKED) like 3-5 times. Its like they think im a lowlife thief. I laugh at it :D
Evening) Later, i did JJ again. It didn't go too well. I mean i learned some stuff but i rolled with a brand new Blue belt and i didn't feel right. I dont know man. could you guys tell me if this is bad??
a) Im not as interested in JJ because these guys who i think i could punch a lot, i cant. I have to try and pass their guard. I just feel like if i were in a fight (mma), i wouldn't be as worried as breaking their guard with my technique, but more with punches. you know what i mean?? maybe i should just stop complaining and learn it to my best ability and stop about the fighting.....
But then we got done and we did MMA. We did shadowboxing, hit the bags, then we did sparring for about 25 minutes. It was AMAZING. i love sparring. I have been working on my movement in my basement while im not in class and it has been giving me at least a little bit of an edge compared to the last time. You guys know what? I can finally take a punch without backing up to the wall. HAHA! (im not brock lesnar anymore .lol) its like you just accept it. I was also countering guys and hitting them back with some sharp punches. Its pretty awesome. I love sparring. I got cut pretty bad in my mouth though. I have braces so whatever. Gonna get them off in a month anyways. so thats about it with MMA. overall a great day.
one more question:::: Is keeping you hands up at all times NECCESARY? like even out of the pocket? Because i feel like i move my head and keep my hands at my hip until i get in range then i put my hands up to punch... Is this OK? or will i get caught doing this? thanks
I have also been getting pain in between my RIGHT bicep and forearm because i think ive been doing too much heavy bag work. Gonna keep it light the next 2 days. Tomorrow morning going to go do some hills and then call it DONE until Sunday. I also asked my brother if he would spar with me at least once or twice per week and he said YES. Although he is going back to college in a month, i have him until i get my license and car. sweet. Somebody is better than nobody, you know?
and thanks to everyone for you advice. It helps keeps my motivation up.

CURRENT WEEK SINCE STARTING TRAINING: 3rd week
Positions in BJJ are crucial. It's hard to do a lot of damage while in someones guard, especially someone who has a good guard. If you can never pass someones guard then you can never reach your full damage potential. Learning an perfecting the fundamentals of anything will help you a lot in the future. Also, learning how to break someones guard will help you better understand how to defend against someone doing it to you.
Soak in as much knowledge as possible because right now, you are like a newborn in MMA. You don't really know exactly what you should be learning right now, so the more the better.
Always keep your hands up, especially in training. If you allow yourself to put your hands down just sometimes in training, you will most likely develop a bad habit of keeping them down more often. KEEP THEM UP...ALWAYS.
You are now using some muscles that you don't usually use often. You are bound to get some pains in areas that you've never had pain before. Just play through the pain...There's a big difference between being hurt or being injured. If it's a medical injury (tear, bruised tendon, broken bone, sprain, ect...) then take the neccesary precautions but if its just a
little pain, stretch a bit more and work through it.
Sparring with your brother will help a bit. Don't be sloppy just because he is (Assuming he's untrained and will be sloppy). Create a mini game plan and stick to it.

So, yesterday i went in because i got a ride. I went in and did some kickboxing and at the very end we sparred. I was only going 1 round and then i was going to be done, up until my sparing partner hit me in the ear and now i can't hear right. I got hit in my right ear and my left ear feels like its on "high elevation". Its really the weirdest thing ive ever heard/felt. I also felt it as soon as he hit me, and i told him that something was messed up. my hearing was all flunky and in and out at first..
It feels like something is wrong. i did go to the docs just to make sure it was fine and they said there is no damage to my ear drum and they also took a brain scan and said everything was fine. I dont know whats going on here.. But im just going to not Spar for another week and see if i can hear a little more clearly.
Its like with every noise, my left ear can feel it. Almost like every noise is like a drum beat in my left ear. And when i get up and walk around it feels like theres a cave flowing through my head and air is going through it.
IDK man. Im just going to rest and see how i feel. Ill update later.

Hey guys. Sorry i haven't updated anything.
So heres the situation. My hearing is better. Its still a bit weird but its getting better. I haven't been going to class. Simply because im sick of waiting in the back the whole day. Im not going to lie to you guys. I got sick of it and to be honest, going to classes once or twice a week is not good enough for me.
So heres the plan: I just got my 5 hour course done. I figured out my ROAD TEST is this Thursday. So what im going to do is Job Search hard this week. Take m road test and (HOPEFULLY) pass. My parents will help me out with a car but they said i need a job because i need to pay for the gas and help with insurance. So this week im going to take off. Possibly next week also. But hopefully after that im going to have my licence, a job, and ill be training 5-6 days per week.
*Im not going to train anymore and ride with my mom because i just don't think its consistent enough. I think if i want to be a champion someday, training once or twice a week is just not enough. All its going to do is make me question myself more because im not training enough and burning myself out going there all day.
Ill let you guys know what happens thursday-friday. Sorry all this crap is not about training. But ill be back in there. cya

I've been out of a car for a couple weeks too. It sucks big time for me, I rely on it for work and training. Good job on the license brah.

Great log!
I'm starting MMA pretty soon; I'm about 124kg(272 lbs) atm; and will commence training in 2 months' time.
I got a Petchyindee Gym Thai instructor; a Spanish KB/Savate champ; and a Gracie Humaita BB.

No dude keep your hands up all times, it's real easy to get caught with em down
