I am thinking about starting to compete next year and I am just wondering how u guys who already do got into the sport. I dont mean simply bodybuilding, I mean getting involved in the competition aspect (tanning, finding shows, developing a routine, etc.)

First off... go to as many shows as possible before stepping on stage. I'm amazed at the number or people that approach me in the gym wanting help to prepare for a show when they've never even seen the condition you must be in to be competitive on stage. It boggles my mind. Would you think of running a marathon if you never went jogging?
Do you home work. Also look for a knowledgeable and successful bodybuilder who is willing to guide you along the journey. Ask them to be truthful in their assesment of you, even to the point of telling you that you don't belong on stage. It's better to find out now then to embarass yourslef on stage. I see too many people on stage who also should not be there. Don't they have any friends to be honest with them?
If you do have "it". Focus on the future and train and diet with a vision in your mind of what YOU want to accomplish with YOURSELF. Don't set the goal of winning because you never know who is going to show up to compete against you. Be the best YOU can be and have that as your reward.
Bodybuilding is not cheap. Remember this. Even if you don't use drugs, the food, supplements, tanning, etc really adds up. Expect it. If you have a family or a loved one they MUST be 100% behind you or you will fail.
Above it all.... keep it in perspective and enjoyable and the inner rewards will come.
Good Luck!
