View Full Version : Anyone here know anything about SOD?

I have been working on the front of my house. I bought some SOD last week and I laid it down. Now I don't know sh!t about this but I read online that I was suppose to fertilized the ground first and some say that is not necessary. Needless to say I read that after the fact so I did not fertilize the ground first. What I did do was break the old dirt up and flipped it, then used a metal raked to level the ground. I have been watering it like crazy and it has been raining as well since I laid it down.

Now here is what the gentleman at home depot told me to do when I laid it down, he said I should stab it so that the water/rain can drain through and get to the dirt in the3 bottom. He said if I do not do that the water would stay in the sod and it would eventually die. I search that online and found nothing of the sort although I did do it.

I don't know anything about grass and I don't know if it is dieing from what I've read it takes 2 to 3 weeks before the roots catch the old dirt.

I took some pics, for those who know about it, does it look like it is dying? It has been a week now.

Just get some liquid fertiliser that you mix in while you are watering it. It doesn't look like it's dying but a good feed will help loads. :)

Watering is the most important thing right now.

Also you can fill the lines where you pushed the sod together in with some soil so the grass grow over the lines, which makes them no longer visible. :)

Please excuse my ignorance on the subject, but what do you mean by "mix it while watering it"? I am using my hose, how do I do that?

Oh sorry BH, over here we get this stuff called miracle grow. There's this thingy that you can attach to the hose in order for it mix in with the water.

It is the easiest way to accurately measure how much fertilizer/liquid supplement you are applying to the sod. (They usually have an adjustment to regulate it).

I'd say...

GOOD JOB! :D

It takes time for the roots to establish, just give it plenty of water and it will be fine.

Sorry to be a pain in the ass, but how much water is plenty of water? I keep watering it like every 3 hours or so is that too much?.

Yup, you water logged it. Now it will turn blue then brown. However, if you give it mouth to mouth you could revive the grass, just inhale deeply and hold.

:D Once in the morning and again in late afternoon is fine, just don't water it if it's in the direct sun in the middle of the afternoon.

you just don't want it to dry out until the root take hold

don't flood it but deep water. If you walk on it and see you foot prints it needs water - it should bounce back.

i would not worry about fert. wait and then get a starter fert for turf - it should have a higher middle number - you do not want a fert with a like of nitrogen until next year (if then even)

Watering depends on temp/sunlight/humidity etc. If its not that hot, twice a day deep water like at least 10 minutes. Hot like here in SoCal, I do 4 times a day at least for the first week.

Fertilizer I would hold off on for a few months, don't want to burn it before it takes root.

Most important with new sod is getting the ground wet before placing it, never letting the underside dry, and pressing it down into the wet ground, getting rid of any air pockets. Any air pockets left will cause it to die after a bit.

Thanks everyone for the great advice, I didn't think it would be this much stuff. I was just going to buy it and put it down.

As for the stabbing I used a kitchen knife and I just stabbed a whole bunch of holes throughout the grass. I made sure I went through the sod and the the original dirt. Was that a bad thing, seriously?

I know I must sound like an idiot but I seriously don't know sh!t about it, just wanted to changed the front of my house.

in the long run it is grass and it will grow on a rock if you water it enough

If any fertilizer, use the "start up" type. Poking holes in it should be okay, I never heard of it and I've put down whole lawns of sod before. Ground preparation is key and if you broke up the first few inches you should be fine. It looks like the edges are contained by a border, those dry out if they're exposed. Raining today.. so skip the watering.

I wouldn't use fertilizer, no need with sod.

For Fescue sod, water at most 3-4" weekly (put a glass in the yard and measure). The point is to keep the sod moist. If you over water the result can be fungus which will kill everything. You can tell fungus because the leaves will get blotchy. It's best to water in the mornings as opposed to night for this same reason. I wouldn't put anything other than 10-10-10 on atm and that should be good enough to get going. Also, I wouldn't aerate this fall, rather wait until the following fall when you can reseed and apply lime as well.

The majority of the sod sold in the NYC area is a kentucky bluegrass. Agree on watering early vs late in the day since grass feeds between 5 and 10 AM. After 10, the hot sun can boil the roots.

First off, it's a myth about watering during the middle of the day and the damage it can do to grass or roots. The reason you don't want to water during the heat of the day has nothing to do with damage to grass...it's because during the heat, a greater percentage of water will evaporate rather than permeate the soil...so it's more of a waste of time/money than anything else.

The biggest thing to be concerned about is dew points. The higher the dew point, the less watering is needed. When the dew point is low, you need to water often...even during the middle of the day on new sod. When I mean low, I mean below 58. I agree that fertilizer isn't needed.

Hahahahahah I remember when I was on holiday in Florida. We had the best bus driver taking us over to NASA. He was asking where people were from etc and then crack a few jokes about the place and what not.

Well he asked who's from the UK so I answered.

This dude cracked me up big time. He starts telling us how the Brits jump on his bus and then getting off they talk about lighting up a ***..

Which apparently has a whole different meaning in the US lol. :D

Can't remember what else he said but all I remember is I've never laughed so hard.
