Hello!
I am totally new to all of this! I am scheduled later this month for my CPR/AED certification and am trying to figure out exactly which personal certification would be tailored best to suit my needs.
I am interested mainly to work at a franchise gym as a personal trainer to see how I like it. To train clients to lose a lot of weight and help with nutritional guidance and wellness counseling. My major in school was for video production, so completely unrelated, obviously. I have no background in this except for personal experience. I am 5'7 and used to weigh 230lbs. Over the years, I have lost 80lbs through cardio and resistance training. I am very interested in the possibility of health and wellness counseling down the road and thought this would be a great place to start. Right now I am 153lbs and looking to get down to 130lbs and get toned and firm.
I have narrowed down the top 4 personal training certifications. I am looking for only nationally accredited ones. All the ones I've found are all already mentioned here on the site: NASM, ACE, NSCA and ACSM. I've done all my research and know that practically all gyms will allow all of these certifications (for the most part).
I've heard ACSM is more medically/clinically oriented. More for assisting people with special conditions. I've also heard NASM is very scientific and is moving more in a direction of physical therapy and focuses mainly on exercise "form and execution". ACE from my gatherings is very generic and is still "good" however, I noticed unlike the others you don't get a "certified personal trainer" title, just "personal trainer". What's the difference? Is that accurate?
I want a certification that is well rounded in nutrition, exercise form, science, proper customer wellness counseling and advising and get the biggest bang for my buck while dealing with the general public! Suggestions? Thanks!
